What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Nakamichi 700 is our challenge to the highest performance comparable to Nakamichi 1000 which has created sensations in the hi-fi industry and to the easier-to-buy pricing as a result of Nakamichi's efforts in production rationalization. Nakamichi 700 is accepted by the audiophiles in its highest cost performance as the basic design policy of the Tri-Tracer rules the entire transport mechanism and electronics without compromise.
Since the introduction of Nakamichi Tri-Tracer the cassette recorders have now been accepted by the professionals and audiophiles as the true hi-fi component same as the reel-to-reel tape decks in terms of frequency response, dynamic range, wow and flutter, tape speed accuracy, signal-to-noise ratio, etc.
"Hearing is believing" - please  confirm the top performance of Nakamichi 700 by your simple hearing test which can only be achieved with the true 3-head cassette recorder Nakamichi 700
"Tri-Tracer" is a pet name created by Nakamichi Research Inc. for a series of professional quality 3-head cassette decks starting from Nakamichi 1000 as top of the line.
"Tri-Tracer" is a 3-head system which traces the fundamental performance of the tape deck in terms of frequency response, distortions, signal-to-noise ratio and wow and flutter with the highest possible standards.

Complete Plug-in Electronics
Electronics circuitry eliminates all connecting wires with a complete plug-in system consisting of six printed circuit boards plugged onto a single main circuit board. Each unit amplifier is using the top quality transistors and assures the best possible performance … the microphone amplifier with 60 dB dynamic range is one example.
 Features
3-Head Configuration
Completely separate record, playback and erase heads configuration permits instantaneous off-the-tape monitoring and ensures the best possible frequency response, up to 20 kHz constantly. The record head is of hi-Mu ferrite with a 5 micron gap designed to obtain deep and intensive recording. The playback head is of special hi-Mu hard permalloy cores and thin titanium film spacer which enables the gap to be as narrow as 0,7 micron.

Alignment Beacon
A unique and simple way in which a pair of pilot lamps flicker alternately when a correct head azimuth alignment is obtained. It eliminates the poor high-end response and phase shift created by the change in tape running condition due to dimansional difference among various brands cassette tape enclosures.
 Tape Drive Mechanism
Closed loop double capstan, staggered large flywheels maintain perfect tape tension across the 3-heads with ultra-low wow and flutter. Also phonic-wheel type DC servomotor maintains correct speed at all times against voltage and frequency fluctuation.

Peak Limit
Although the record amplifier in the Nakamichi 700 has very wide dynamic range so that the distortion may hardly occur in normal sound recording. However, in case of live recording the distortion may occur due to excessively wide dynamic range of sounds to be recorded, and the built-in Peak Limiter minimizes such distortion.
 dB Peak Level Meter
The Nakamichi 700 is equipped with level meters indicating the peak level in recording so that they effectively eliminate the risk of over-recording.

3-Point Sound Pickup
Other than the normal two microphone inputs the third input for the blend microphone is provided and each input level can be adjusted independently so that the professional quality mixing is available. The blend microphone is especially useful for recording of solo vocal or solo instrument.
Pitch Control
Any speed within the range of ±6% can be selected. This control is for correction of tape speed previously recorded off speed and for playback at higher and lower pitch in music lessons and other wide applications.

IC Logic Electronic Control
All tape motion controls are solenoid operated, with light finger touch buttons. IC control logic circuit produces any sequence control of complicated timing which assures the user complete freedom from click noise. Other automatic controls such as automatic shut-off, memory rewind, and record lock are also provided. The position in motion will be indicated by illuminated lamps above each control button

18-Bit Technology Withstands the Test of Time
Whether they use Bit Stream or 18-bit digital technology, Harman Kardon compact disc players are distinguished by superior internal layout, quality components, and excellent power-supply and grounding-system design.
Harman Kardon'a 18-bit compact disc players have major advantages over competing brands in the same category. Our units are adjusted in the factory for precise, low level linearity, allowing for clearer, more dynamically accurate, less distorted  low level signals. And as with our bit stream players, we use only discrete circuits along the analog audio signal path.

It isn't every company that applies the same standards to its compact disc players as it does to its amplifiers. Removing the top from ordinary compact disc players reveals that most dedicate only an averange of five percent of internal circuitry to the analog audio section, while Harman Kardon commits 25 to 30 percent, depending on the model. Buyers can literally see the quality of design.
Discrete Analog Compact Disc Output Stages
Sound signals travel through analog circuitry before arriving at the compact disc player's output jacks. Those stages may employ mass-produced integrated circuits or custom-designed discrete circuits.
Harman Kardon uses only discrete circuits along the audio signal path, insuring that the best possible sound produced by the sampling and conversion systems is achieved.
Discrete circuits embody close-tolerance resistors, capacitors,, and fast-slew-rate transistors. The benefit is wider bandwidth and minimal negative feedback, both of which are critical to the compact disc player's amplifier stages.

 Infra-Red Wireless Remote Control
 Operation of Receiver
  1. The receiver consists of a PIN photo diode, amplifier, LC tuning circuit, detection circuit, and wave-form shaping circuit (Schmitt Trigger), and it changes the infrared signal from the transmitter into the original 10-bit signal.
  2. The 10-bit pulse signal is processed by the microcomputer, and then the necessary remote control signal is taken out from each output port.
  3. The output interface is a circuit to facilitate the conection with each equipment, and it is an inverter using an open collector.
Operation of Transmitter
  1. MN6025C is an 5-bit IC which can generate 25 kinds of signals. The oscillation frequency is 396 kHz and is divided by 12 to obtain 33 kHz which is used as modulation frequency. It is further divided by 16 to achieve 2,06 kHz which is the clock frequency of this IC.
  2. When the keyboard is depressed, Mn6025C starts oscillating and generates series pulses of 5 bits plus inverse 5 bits, totalling 10 bits, according to the key position.
  3. The 10-bit pulse signal is modulated by 33 kHz carrier.
  4. The modulated signal from MN6025C is applied to the infrared LED and command eye LED drive circuits. With oscillation time is about 60 msec. required for 10 bits, while the lighting up time of the command eye is set at about 0,5 sec.
 Electronic Volume Control
  1. In this control, five attenuators of -2 dB, -4 dB, -8 dB, -16 dB and -32 dB, and a muting circuit of -20 dB are turned On-Off by an analog switch for changeover in 32 steps renging from 0 dB to -6 dB and to ∞ by -2 dB each.
  2. The analog switch is driven by a 5-bit binary up-down counter, which is provided with last sound function due to the back-up signal from the tuner pre-amplifier.
  3. The volume control up-down switch gains 1 step in the initial 0,5 sec. of push, and keeping it depressed causes step-by-step volume control every 0,15 sec. When the switch is kept depressed, it takes about 5 secondes for the change from 0 dB to -∞ dB.
  4. A 5-bit IC (LC7500) is used as the controller for the electronic volume. With this IC, the five attenuators can be selected in 32 steps. The internal oscillation frequency 800 Hz is divided into pulses of 0,15 sec. period, and the pulses are counted at the counter circuit to select the attenuators.

When the volume up-down switch is pressed, three pulses are first counted to select an attenuator and subsequently the attenuators are selected every pulse.

Tannoy Oxford

Tannoy's engineers were briefed to produce a range of loudspeakers - of modest dimension and price - which would retain that characteristic, and relese in your home that special magic  the musicans created. The result of their research and development are now available to you in the Stradford, Cambridge and Oxford loudspeakers.

Like all Tannoy Loudspeakers, these three models are highly efficient. This means that, in comparasion with many other loudspeakers, your amplifier will not have to be driven so hard to produce a realistic listening sound level, with less chance of producing a distorted signal. Your ears will tell you the difference, with the Tannoys producing a clean, truthful sound, which gives remarkable freedon from listening fatigue. Unlike some speakers with unrealistic "over Impressive" performance, you will not grow tired of our sound, and will appreciate your investment in Tannoy for many years.
 Tannoy Oxford
The Oxford uses the same HF compression driver, but matched to a 10" version of our polyolefin cone bass driver. This combination, mounted in a larger cabinet made from heavier weight material and walnut finish, offers the most extended frequency response, and highest peak power handling capacity of this range.
The high efficiency of the Oxford, as with all Tannoy Loudspeakers, enables you to reproduce in your home realistic sound levels from even modestly powered systems. Used in conjunction with quality electronics the lifelike detail and articulation of the Oxford is really quite outstanding. It is no wonder that the Oxford has been used professionally in monitoring the sound quality of live performance location recording.
How do we produce such good sounds? Well, to start with we are manufactures of complete loudspeakers systems. The components of the Stradford, Cambridge and Oxford are designed and manufactured in our own factory. This enables us to provide unique solutions to acoustic problems that some other manufactures do not even recognise.
Take our tweeter for instance.
Conventional cone or dome tweeters will not easily accept high level music transients efficiently and without distortion. Our research programme produced the tannoy horn loaded compression driver. This remarkable device uses a special magnetic cooling fluid which enables it to handle far more power, and convert significantly more of that power into clean sound. The controlled sound dispersion also provides consistent stereo imager, which is less affected by the acoustic characteristics of your listening room than many conventional HF units.
We certainly did not neglect the low frequency response of the Stradford, Cambridge and Oxford. Two bass/mid-range drivers were developed, both using a cone made by Tannoy from a polyolefin co-polymer - which provides a smoother, more extended frequency response - mounted within a rigid pressure formed metal frame. Our heavyweight magnet assembly provides high power handling with the legendary Tannoy efficiency.

Both drivers are mated to a crossover network carefully designed to provide optimum performance with low distortion. We ensure reliable performance by using only high quality components.

Last, but by no means least, we designed a damped, very rigid ducted port cabinet for each model, to give really solid bass response. Each cabinet has a Walnut finish -  and the detachable acoustic foam grille of each model carries the famous gold badge of Tannoy - The Name for Loudspeakers.
