H.H. Scott 710-A (1955-60)

Radically new mechanical design virtually eliminates acoustic feedback.
Convenient pushbutton selection of 33-1/3, 45 and 78 rpm speeds.
Individual vernier speed controls to permit matching the pitch of accompanying musical instruments.
Built-in expanded scale optical stroboscope for exact speed control, while record is actually being played.
Torsional and dual stage mechanical filtering reduce rumble to 60 dB below the recording level,
wow and flutter to less than 0,1% all far below audibility.

The 710-A is actually far more than just a high-performance turntable. It is an integrated system incorporating complete facilities for pickup arm mounting with scientifically designed vibration isolation. At its moderate price it represents an outstanding value featuring unique beauty, operating convenience, simplicity of installation and unsurpassed performance.

The radically new mechanical design of this professional turntable reduces annoying disturbances such as motor rumble, "wow" and flutter to limits so low as to be inaudible and virtually unmeasurable. This is possible through the use of unique dual-stage mechanical vibration filtering and high compliance torsional filtering. A significat design contribution is the rigid connection of the integral pickup-arm mounting board to the turntable bearings through a heavy aluminum casting. This prevents acoustic feedback and other undesirable results of vibration differences between pickup arm and turntable.

Real operating convenience is provided by pushbutton selection of 33-1/3, 45 and 78 rpm speeds. Built-in expanded scale optical stroboscope with electronic peak-pulsing for extreme clarity insures precision speed adjustment even while a record is being played. Each speed is separately adjustable by ±5% to allow matching the pitch ofanaccompanying musical instrument.
The turntable board in gleaming stainless steel, can be mounted directly to a cabinet without additional vibration isolation, providing simple and convenient installation. The 710-A is a beautifully styled unit, available either with or without the handsome modern base.

VIEW OF TURNTABLE MECHANISM
  1. Expanded scale optical stroboscope, with electronic peak pulsing for greatest clarity, is visible even while the record is playing for exact speed control at all times.
  2. Precision helical drive gears, of hardened steel and nylon, for smooth silent flow of power to turntable. gears housed in an oil-filled transmission for noiseless trouble-free operation. Special clutch permits cueing turntable.
  3. High-compliance torsional filtering reduces annoying speed variations, such as wow and flutter, to less than 0,1% far below audibility.
  4. Dual-stage mechanical filtering between motor and turntable reduces motor rumble to more than 60 dB below recording level, an outstanding engineering accomplishment.
  5. Integral pickup-arm mounting board, accommodating all leading pickup-arms, is rigidly connected to turntable bearings by a heavy aluminum casting. This eliminates acoustic feedback and other undesirable vibration differences between pickup-arm and turntable.
  6. Vernier speed drive with special long-life neoprene idlers permits separate adjustments of 33-1/3, 45 and 78 rpm speeds by ±5% to match the pitch of accompanying musical instruments. Convenient push button selection of each speed and off position.
  7. heavy-duty high quality induction motor designed specially for this turntable with dynamically balanced rotor and extremelly low external hum field.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
MOTOR RUMBLE:
Reduced to more 60 dB below the recording level, far below audibility.
WOW AND FLUTTER:
decreased to less than 0,1% of rated speed.
SPEED SELECTION:
Push button selection of 33, 45 and 78 rpm speeds.
VERNIER SPEED CONTROLS:
Each speed has its own vernier adjustment. A variation of up to ±5% may be made in the nominal speed to permit matching the pitch of accompanying musical instrument.
STROBOSCOPE:
Built-in expanded scale stroboscope permits precise speed adjustment even while record is being played. Special electronic peak-pulsing circuit insures superior stroboscope illumintion and clarity.
PICKUP ARM MOUNTING BOARD:
Mounting board made of hand-rubbed mahogany is included with the turntable and is part of the special mechanical design. The board is mounted on the same cast frame as teh turntable bearings thus minimizing acoustic feedback and other undesired effects of differential vibration between pickup and record. Mounting board is easily removed or replaced and may be easily drilled for any loading pickup arm.
MECHANICAL FILTERING:
High compliance torsional filtering and two stages of damped mechanical filtering reduce wow , flutter and rumble to limits far below audibility.
TURNTABLE:
Machined from a single five pound aluminum casting. Weight concentrated at the rim for maximum uniformity of speed. Aluminum construction eliminates possibility of magnetic pull on reluctance cartridges.
PRECISION HELICAL DRIVE GEARS:
Smooth, silent flow of power to the turntable is assured by the hardened steel worm and nylon drive gears. Gears housed in an oil-filled transmission for noiseless trouble-free operation.
OTHER CONSTRUCTION FEATURES:
Motor board covered in gleaming machine-finished stainless steel; special precision honed sintered bronze bearings used; long life neoprene idlers; all idlers disconnected with Off button depressed.
SLIP CLUTCH:
Special clutch allows turntable to be cued. Clutch also prevents mechanical shock to gear drive when unit is turned Off.
MOTOR:
heavy duty induction motor, with dynamically balanced rotor and extremaly low external hum field, designed specially for this turntable. This special motor is insensitive to the instantaneous short-term variations in line frequency which occur frequently, and it is also insensitive to changes in line voltage.
ACCESSORY BASE:
A handsome, hand-rubbed mahogany base, precut for easy installetion is available.
CABINET INSTALLATION:
The unique mechanical design makes it possible to mount the turntable board firmly to any cabinet. No special mounting springs or vibration isolators are required. The motor board is simply rigidly fastened to the cabinet. Mounting templates are supplied with the turntable.
DIMENSIONS:
Board dimensions, including pickup armmounting board: 16 x 14½. Depth from top of spindle to bottom of mechanism: 7 inches. Depth below mounting board: 4¼ inches.
POWER:
55 wtts, 105 125 volts, 60 cycle a.c.
Special model 710-A1 available for 50 cycle operation.
