Luxman MQ-88

 MQ-88 VACUUM TUBE POWER AMPLIFIER
We, Luxman could be said a maker who has been pursuing the possibility of adopting the vacuum tube in amplifier for a long term in Japan. Although it happens that the replacing into the semiconductor has become the main stream in audio amplification, the high reality and wide range owned by vacuum tube enables it be actively used in the design as well as in the constitution of amplification circuit. Here comes the CL-88/MQ-88, a separate type vacuum tube amplifier poured with the latest (development) results and everlasting enthusiasm and republished after 11 years’ dormancy.
Driving KT88 with Mulardo type circuit
The vacuum tube was adopted in power amplifier MQ-88 after overall careful consideration. In the primary stage of ECC83S, JI-made vacuum tube of Slovakia, and in the drive stage of 12BH7A and output tube of KT88, the Sobulikku–made vacuum tube of Russia are respectively adopted. The products with a good fame in quality, sound quality and in long term stable delivery are used. In circuit type, the cathode directly connecting type aiming at gaining flexibility and forcefulness, namely the Mulardo type was adopted. It features that the second distortion occurred at the drive section of differential construction in the primary stage could be eliminated and the balances of push-pull actions of output tube KT88 is stabilized. In addition, the product that has same size with OY36 which boasts wide range features and dynamic sound was specially designed into the output transistor. Lastly, the transistor using oriented core material was built in the sealed box for protecting it from noise.
The bias adjusting function equipped with monitoring meter The meter using for adjusting the bias current aiming at guaranteeing the visibility by the combination of blue LEDs was equipped on the top panel. For keeping 4 KT88 (vacuum tubes) at usually best conditions, and for highlighting the stability and reliability in semi-fixed volume, the wirewound sealed construction type was adopted

The high grade/high sound quality parts made with carefulness
This is the MQ-88 aiming at increasing the high fidelity of the amplification of signal by decreasing the attached functions. So the parts used in this must be in good quality. First of all, the single wire of the gold plating 4N non-copper oxide coated with the ideal insulating material—fluorine resin insulating coating was adopted in the signal wire. So the sound with core and long term stable feature could be reached. In CR parts type, many best-known parts such as tubular type condenser immersed in vitamin Q oil, the Ligen Dengu-made carbon film resistor used in audio are adopted. In addition, many high-grade custom-made parts such as gold-plating tight socket, super-high insulation lug terminal plate, etc. are adequately used.

 Chassis construction completely pursuing rigidity
The vibration and the resonance from the outside are the formidable enemy for vacuum tube inside it the electrons collide each other in the vacuum glass tube. For MQ-88, on the basis of guaranteeing the rigid foundation by adopting the 15mm super-thick aluminum stainless plate for top panel, the constructions suitable for control amplifier and power amplifier are extensively analyzed.  On one side, the shock-proof construction integrated surface and collar of MQ-88 supports the heavy things such as transistors, etc. Because the collars are directly installed at the foot parts of case, the case body is kept upright. The existing box-type part plays a role of beam in this construction, contributing a lot for the strengthening of the horizontal intensity of the case body as a whole. The Piezon composite insulator used at the foot parts of the two models has taken the construction combining the advantages of hardware and software systems by using the stainless brass combined with damping material (piezoelectricity-type sound-proof and absorption material). It could give a solid support to the amplifier case body as well as could eliminate the vibration and resonance.

Luxman CL-88

 CL-88 VACUUM TUBE CONTROL AMPLIFIER
Simple two-step amplification NF circuit was adopted. In control amplifier CL-88 circuit, the two-step amplification NF type circuit was adopted in an orthodox way. The functional circuit such as tone control, balance volume, etc. was only directly reflected in the simple circuit via no any other medium, and the wiring method, the layout of components are directly reflected in the sound quality and audio specifications. The switching of signal at the golden contact relay sealed in nitrogen gas at the nearby of 4-system line input terminal reflects the consideration about maintaining a high S/N (rate) because of simple circuit. It is the same with power source part. The reason of the adoption of small scale OI type transistor with good sealing feature and little leakage flux lies in that Luxman knows quite well about how big the impact exerted by S/N (rate) on vacuum tube amplifier is. For quickly supplying pure energy, the regulator circuit is omitted.
High-precision ultimate volume + touch mute Function.
One of the important parts that could decide the sound quality of preamplifier is volume. Luxman has not only dedicated to sound quality for a long time, but also to the precision, operation feeling. And the ultimate volume with a high precision was adopted in CL-88. For improving operation, the touch mute function is built in. By touching the center of the volume knob, one could mute the sound at once.

llumination realized by blue-LED.
For displaying the character of products and for helping owner enjoy a happiest time of performance, below the volume, meter and chassis, the elegant and calm illumination realized by the blue-LED was equipped.

The special vacuum tube phono amplifier EQ-88 could be connected.
In CL-88 specially designed for the special use of line level, the optional compact, high quality special vacuum tube phono amplifier EQ-88 was prepared for analog lovers. The power could be supplied just by one touch on the Noitorikku -made connector installed on the rear of power source. ( The separate power unit only for driving EQ-88 will be launched recently. Please consult business department of our company for more detailed information.)
 Chassis construction completely pursuing rigidity
The vibration and the resonance from the outside are the formidable enemy for vacuum tube inside it the electrons collide each other in the vacuum glass tube. For CL-88 on the basis of guaranteeing the rigid foundation by adopting the 15mm super-thick aluminum stainless plate for top panel, the constructions suitable for control amplifier and power amplifier are extensively analyzed. The CL-88 has replaced construction from the original box-type case body to the hanging mode with heavy thing installed in the internal side of top panel. Between the chassis and the top panel, the rubber cushion material was inserted, the framework construction for eliminating the tiny vibration by batten with high rigidity was adopted. Onkyo TX-4500

The Onkyo Quartz-Locked Receiver, compare it against every known receiver. You'll see there's no comparsion.
Quartz-Locked technology is a dramatic breakthrough in automatic drift-free and virtually distortion-free FM reception.
There are no buttons to push, no switches to throw, nothing extra to do to lock in a signal. Once a station is tuned in, it's locked in. Quartz-Locked in. And any factor which can cause tuner drift is automatically compensated for so the TX-4500 assuresconstant pinpoint FM reception, maximum channel separation and minimum distortion.
But that's only the FM story. There's virtually nothing you can't accomplish with the TX-4500.
Flawless programs come off records and tapes. Or use the TX-4500 to make your own tapes. Or mix your own programs with multiple tape inputs and dubbing.
The TX-4500 does it all. Rated according to FTC specs, the TX-4500 delivers 55 watts minimum RMS per channel, both channels driven into 8 ohms over a 20 Hz to 20 kHz spectrum, showing less than 0,1% THD.
In addition, the TX-4500 also evidences exceptional transient response, the ability of an amplifier to follow sudden changes in the level of sound signals. Dual oscilloscope traces, with  a 50 Hz square wave fed through, have shown less than a 5% tilt.  Generally, conventional amplifiers under the same conditions have shown a 25-50% tilt.
The onkyo Quartz-Locked Receiver offers one more important advantage - outstanding value for superior performance.
Quartz-Locked Tuning Creates A New Degree of Tuning Accuracy
In a radical departure from conventional FM tuner design principles, Onkyo engineering has created a quartz oscillator controlled circuitry for the most accurate station tuning possible. A superbly stable frequancy is generated in a quartz oscillator, and this unvarying frequency becomes the reference for the tuned stages of the FM circuits. Even the slightest deviation from ideal tuning condition is detected instantly and compensated automatically, assuring razor-sharp tuning and minimum distortion at all times.
Automatic "Human Touch Sensor"
As you touch the tuning knob, a special sensor circuit detects your touch and relases the above-named quartz lock. Then, after you have tuned in another station and relased the knob, the quartz circuit lokcs again. You need not even tune in a station very preciselly, as the quartz lock will automatically compensate for tuning errors.
Enormous Reserve of Output Power
The ultra-moder, all direct coupled amplifier section delivers 55 W of clean Onkyo power per channel into 8 ohms, over the entire frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with both channels driven, at no more than 0,1% THD. In practical terms, this means that you heve a tremendous reserve of power available to handle even sustained high volume levels and signal peaks without driving the amplifier into clipping distortion.

Total Control Over What You Hear and How

In addition to the standard balance, high and low filter, mode and loudness controls, the TX-4500 features click-stop volume and tone controls giving accurately reproducible settings. Its FM Muting Lock switch eliminates inter-station noise on FM, and its Dolby Adaptor switch establishes the correct (25 µsec) deemphasis for Dolby processed FM broadcasts.

 Prepared for Future System Expansions
The TX-4500 can serve as the heart of an astounding, elaborate audio system for home and professional uses. It can drive three pairs of speakers, can accommodate two turntables and three tape dekcs, a Dolby noise reduction adaptor, and FM 4-channel decoder for areas with 4-channel FM broadcasting, and it can even be adapte for such advanced applications as equalizer, multi-amplifier and P.A. system. The TX-4500, in other words, know few limits.

Massive, Modernistic Styling
Technological excellence inside has its counterpart in the solid looking external appearance with its protruding glass panel and heavy battery of controls.

NAD 5120

Semi-automatic belt-drive Turntable
The 5120 incorporates all the vital features of a turntable needed to achieve outstanding musical performance. In September ‘94 What Hi Fi? said “- there’s nothing around to touch it at the price”.
A high quality synchronous motor ensures that the belt driven platter maintains accurate speeds without rumble or flutter. The platter, with its vibration-absorbing thick rubber mat, and the interchangeable tonearm are mounted on a sub chassis, isolating them from the main chassis and from any possible interference introducing vibrations.
NAD’s Dynamic Vibration Absorber (DVA) free floating tonearm counter-weight ensures absolute stylus
tracking stability and freedom for muddying resonances.
The 5120's purity of design and technical innovation promise many years of musical pleasure.
This remarkable NAD product was developed in collaboration with an international team of design engineers. The 5120 was first brought to us by an inventor from Prague. His ingenious concept was a turntable constructed from a minimum of essential components, and with a revolutionary flrxible tonearm made from a printed circuit board.
Under the supervision of NAD's Research Dirctor, an American engineering company generated a computer simulation of a perfect with optimum performance characteristics. This mathematical model was incorporated into the NAD 5120, resulting in a turntable that challenges some of the finest models in the market at a fraction of the cost.
The simple yet elegant design of the 5120 was created by one of the world's leading industrial designers, NAD's technology, combined with aosthetics and human engineering has produced a turntable with superb performance, beauty and value.
Our "floppy" tonearm is the most unique element of the NAD 5120 turntable.
Most conventional tubular tonearms, limited by their material and shape, tend to add resonant colorations to the music being reproduced.
NAD's engineers have taken a fresh approach; the radical flexible and flat design incorporates a precision suspended counterweight system. This "floppy" tonearm, combined with a resonance-free floating sub-chassis, result in a turntable that sets new standards for performance.
The NAD 5120 has brought critical acclaim from the world wide audio press. Here are just a few of their comments:
Ovation Magazine (USA), said " a deceptively simple design that becomes more intriguing at its relatively low cost."
Revue du Son (France), commented " Always true to its basic philosophy, NAD is offering this turntable at a price that beats all competition…"
Hi-Fi (UK), concluded " Sonically, the NAD 5120 is in a class of its own."

Thorens TD 124 Transcription Turntable
Highest achievement in turntable design does not mainly result from spectacular new mechanical or electrical elements, but much more from an integration of known, ordinarily conflicting elements, into a new design where best features are magnified and their individual weaknesses eliminated.

As may important features found on Model TD 124 Turntable, including Inertia Controlled Drive and Two Part Turntable with Clutch Action. Professional users and discriminating music lovers will find for the first time so many desirable features harmoniously blended into a new turntable whose basic performance is better than NARTB specifications for broadcasting studio equipment.
Wooden board for tone arm mounting made integral with the cast aluminium frame.
No relative vibrations between base plate and tone arm mounting board; the rumble level is independent of the type of installation.
Easy installation of any type of tone arm; two dimensions of tone  arm mounting board available allow the use of tone arms for 12" or 16" records.
Easy replacement of tone arm mounting board on installed unit when changing the tone arm.

Spring suspension of the whole unit on the mounting board.
Easy installation without the need for additional parts on any base or cabinet; the mounting board does not need to be spring mounted.

Special inbuilt leveling device
The mounting board or cabinet does not need to be leveled
The precision inbuilt water level allows a permanent control of the leveling

Inertia-controlled drive system; relatively light, precision built 4-pole motor, associated to a very heavy turntable
Minimizes the influence of instantaneous voltage fluctuations on the turntable speed; the flywheel, not the motor, is controlling the speed
Keeps motor vibrations very low
Allows a most compliant suspension of the motor on the base plate for maximum damping of any vibration
Keeps the stray flux very low.
 Two steps speed reduction
Between motor and turntable, associating the best features of the belt-driven flywheel and of the stepped pulley-idler wheel speed shift, and eliminating the drawbacks of these two systems taken alone.
The long rubber belt prevents any vibration to be transmitted from the motor to the idler wheel and to the turntable
Extra large diameter aluminium pulley for the belt (1 ¼" and 2 ¾") preventing slipping and deformation of the belt
The rubber belt is easily interchanged from the top of the unit
The stepped pulley for four speed revolves at half the speed of that of conventional systems, thus the steps are of a much larger diameter. Better contact with idler wheel, no slipping and no local deformation of the soft tread of the idler wheel
The stepped pulley is not on the rotor shaft, but has extra long, precision bearing rigidly fixed to the base plate. The vobrations and possible misalignment of the rotor shaft of a spring mounted motor has no effect on the stepped pulley and idler wheel.

Altec Lansing Model One II

The second generation of Altec Lansing Bookshelf Models
Perhaps more than any other single audio component, the speaker-on-the-shelf has come to represent Hi-Fi. Its classic design and compact size have made it a favorite the world over. But all bookshell speakers are far from being equal.
At Altec Lansing, have always believed that their speakers should deliver outstanding performance.
So Altec Lansing  invest years of research and refinement in evry product their make. The result of this effort is the Series II Bookshell  Line.
Five speakers - each an exceptional performer. Each made better by subtle changes in acoustic design, construction techniques and material selection. Changes like the new hybrid magnet designfound in the Models one through Seven.
Until now, speaker magnet structure design was either of the traditional Alnico or ceramic type.
The Alnico type uses a voice coil that surrounds the magnet. It has been found, however, that the interaction of the voice coil and the magnet will eventually cause the magnet to partially demagnetize. The result is a loss of sensitivity and a muddy bass sound. The ceramic magnet poses a different problem. Here the voice coil moves around the pole piece and is surrounded by the magnet. The thinner magnet, however, creates a clearance problem for the voice coil.
The Altec Lansing hybrid magnet design  combines the best of both magnet types. The new design still has the magnet around the voice coil, but the new "top hal" design eliminates the clearance problem.  Of course the one thing we would never change is the quality that Altec Lansing is known for. We still mke all our speaker components and all our bookshelf speakers are finished with real wood veneers.
So if you're looking for top performance combined with the classic appearance of a bookshelf speaker,  search the Altec Lansing for a demonstration of the Series II Bookshelf speakers.
