Quad CDP-2 CD player

The Quad 99 CD-P is a versatile CD player with several advanced features. The CD-P will play regular music CDs, music and standard CD-Rs (open or closed) and CD-RWs. Automatic upsampling increases the detail levels in your CD collection, and the ability to add three digital and three optical sources enables you to get the very best from your other digital media. An optical output is provided to connect the CD-P to other digital equipment.
The CD-P accepts three optical and three digital inputs. Minidisc and DAT players, or Digital Audio Broadcast tuners (DAB) will be significantly improved by connecting their digital outputs to the CD-P. The CD-P can accept incoming PCM digital signals to a maximum resolution of 24bit/96kHz.
CD Mechanism
The Quad CDP-2 mechanism was a major engineering project. Whereas most manufacturers use off-the-shelf transports, we wanted a unit which was particularly optimized to static CD players and employed a ‘lazy servo’ mechanism. In all off-the-shelf CD mechanisms – even those used by high-end manufacturers, there are a number of compromises built into the device which mean that they can be used for a number of applications. With a new Quad mechanism, it could be safely assumed that the CD player would be sat on a farily rigid structure and vibration, whilst possible would be limited.
This enabled us to develop a proprietary ‘lazy servo’ mechanism, which involves the way the transport deals with disc data loss. Where most transports, upon loosing a data stream, move the optic (laser) back a forward rapidly to recover the lost data – ours just sits there and waits for the disc to come around. This has a significant benefit in lowering the noise floor of the player. Some innovative timing techniques used, also result in an industry leading jitter measurement of just 8 pS. These technical innovations combined with its versatility of use (particularly the 6 digital inputs and adjustable level output) make the CDP-2 one of the finest CD players on the market today at any price.

Mark Levinson ML-9 power amp

The ML-9 is a basic stereophonic amplifier with many of the features of the higher-powered ML-3. the ML-9 is rated at 100 Watts continuous sinewave power per channel into 8 ohms, with both channels driven, from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with no more than 0.2% Total Harmonic Distortion. It will drive even the most inefficient loudspeakers to their full potential. In fact, the ML-9 will easily satisfy the power requirements of all but the most unorthodox applications.
The design goal of the ML-9 was to provide the same overall performance of the Ml-3 in a component with about half the power, size and price.
Thus, the audio circuitry of both models is similar. Push-pull operation is maintained from input to output. Full protection is provided for both the amplifier and the load. The power supply of the ML-9 consists of a 1,2 kVA toroidal transformer and a pair of 36 milli-Farad capacitors, allowing for energy storage in excess of 230 Joules.
The damping factor can be adjusted by means of a three-position toggle switch on each channel to meet the requirements of virtually all presently available loudspeakers. The ML-9 has been designed to drive complex loads with complete stability.

Circuit description
The ML-9 is a high quality Class AB₂ stereophonic amplifier designed to provide virtually the same sonic performance as the ML-3 in a component of about half the power, weight, size and price.
Power Supply
Consists of a 1,2 kVA toroidal transformer, a 30A bridge rectifer, and two 36,000 µF capacitors. Four 520 µF capacitors are used for added decoupling of the pre-driver stage.
Pre-Driver Stage
Consists of a differential amplifier with a cascode which drives a second differential amplifier with a cascode and a current inverter. The inverter converts from balanced to ground (differential) to unbalanced to ground while maintaining push-pull operation.
Driver Stage
Consists of a complimentary emitter follower, driving a second complimentary emitter follower.
Output Stage
Consists of four parallel complimentary push-pull emitter followers
Protection
The on/off switch doubles as an electromagnetic circuit breaker to protect the amplifier from excessive current. The power stages are protected by an energy limiting circuit which monitors power dissipation versus time. Independent energy limiting for positive and negative information minimizes distortion while in the overload condition. This circuit offers excellent protection without effecting the sonic quality. The loudspeaker is protected by a D.C. sensing circuit that monitors the output of the amplifier. The D.C. sensing circuit is connected to the circuit breaker. Several other techniques have been employed to protect the ML-9 from external sources of damage.
Selectable damping Factor
Loudspeakers, like all electrical devices, are not perfect. We have determined that certain loudspeaker characteristics can be effected by varying the damping factor of the amplifier. For the reason the ML-9 is equipped with selectable damping capability.

Pioneer SX-750 receiver

Advanced, High Power AM/FM Stereo Receiver with Tonal Quality-Oriented Design Features.

For a practically-prieced integrated receiver, Pioneer's SX-750 delivers an astonishing amount of state-of-the-art. Perfection. Conventionally, receivers have been considered inferior in terms of performance to integrated amplifiers and independent tuners. But the SX-750 is bound to after this convention. Its pre-amplifier, power amplifier and tuner sections give first-rate performance specifications, the equal in many respects to separate components.
There is an abundance of power: continuous power output of 50 watts per channel min. RMS at 8 ohms, from 20 to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0,1% Total Harmonic Distortion. Other design features contribute to the unit's overall stability and sensitivity. The input/output terminals and circuits of the pre-amplifier/tuner sections are laid out on one large printed circuit board, a process that eliminates shielded input cords and enhances overall tonal quality. The front end uses a dual gate MOS type FET and a 4-gang variable capacvitor for its high sensitivity and selectivity. The IF section combines up-to-the-minute circuits and differential amplifier ICs for its high signal/noise ratio and low distortion.
The SX-750 by Pionner: innovative, attractive, value-packed - another model of efficiency in receiver design.
