Epos M16 loudspeakers

The Epos M16  floorstanding systems

The latest in the Epos range of real-wood floor standing speakers, the M16 is all about accuracy, dynamics and poise. It will perform well in 2 channel or home theater systems.

The Epos M16 is new a floor-standing, rear-ported, two and a half way speaker finished in a polished real-wood veneer. It is supplied with a custom wooden plinth which can be used with four 6mm carpet spikes, which can be adjusted to make the cabinet tilt backwards, if required.

Two and half way means that the bass and mid-bass drivers are run in parallel at some frequencies. The bass driver is filtered with an inductor to limit its upper frequency response to about 150Hz. Below that the two drivers work as one to reinforce the power and dynamics of this relatively small speaker. This design has the mid-bass and bass drivers running in separate,

sealed chambers.

The Tweeter

Tweeter is similar to that used in all the M series products. It uses a 25mm diameter 50 micro thick aluminium dome with ferro-fluid cooling and neodymium magnet system. This improves power handling and because all Epos tweeters are designed to produce a low distortion output down to 500Hz, it creates a very wide and open sound stage in the mid-range.

The Midrange

The M16′s 130mm (5 1/2′′) midrange driver is an all new device, which has been evolved from the M5′s design. It features an alloy chassis for strength and a moulded polypropylene cone for fast and accurate signal handling. It has a solid phase plug and a powerful, magnetically shielded, motor system to allow it to handle high powered signals.

The Bass

The 130mm (5 1/2′′) bass driver is similar to the midrange but has lower impedance and also uses a dust cap to cover the voice coil former and not a phase plug. With its ventilated voice coil, it is capable handling extremely high power. It is recommended that it be partnered with an amplifier that is capable of driving a 4 Ohm load to high power levels.

The M16 has been evolved from the design of the M5, which means that it does have a multi-element crossover filter for the middle and high frequencies, which is positioned in the top chamber nearest to the drivers. It also has a single inductor for the bass, together with a conjugate circuit to flatten the response in the upper bass region where the mid-bass and bass driver sum their output, to remove the effect of chestiness which can be undesirable especially when listening to male

voices. The bass crossover filter is located in the bottom chamber to avoid magnetic interference with the middle and high frequency filter.

Connection to the M16 is tri-wirable through three pairs of metal binding posts, situated at the bottom of the cabinet to help keep speaker cabling more tidy. The internal wiring uses solid core DNM wire.

The rear port has been constructed from machined MDF trumpet shape, which has been sprayed to cosmetically match the finish of the cabinet. The tube length is adjusted to produce deep bass output down to 40 Hz. At the inside end of the port tube, another machined MDF wooden trumpet shape helps to avoid wind turbulence from interfering with the overall performance of the speaker. This turbulence can be a common problem in ported designs.

The M16 is perfect as a high performance 2 channel floor-standing monitor. However, it has also been engineered with home theatre application in mind. Its design improves imaging and enhances the pace, rhythm and timing characteristics that have long been the hallmark of Epos speaker systems.

If used as the front left and right speakers in a home theatre application, the choice of either M12.2 or M5 speakers for the rear together with the M8 centre channel and new M subwoofer guarantees a cinema speaker package of the highest order.

Epos Elan 30 loudspeakers

The Elan 30 is the second largest floor-stand speaker in this new range.

Its design holds true to the purist principles followed by Epos. The two woofers work together at low frequencies to provide even higher sensitivity and power handling than the bookshelf models in addition to delivering deeper and more powerful bass. We believe this design philosophy delivers the very best sound

quality and musical performance for the money.

Only the finest real-wood veneers are selected, book-matched and hand-laid. Several coats of polyurethane are applied and polished for a high-quality finish. To minimise unwanted vibration and coloration, extensive horizontal and vertical internal bracing are positioned inside the sturdy 18mm thick MDF cabinets. For optimum performance and stability, they should be fitted with the plinths

supplied, together with the adjustable spiked feet, designed to decouple unwanted energy from the cabinet into the floor.

The Elan 30 is supplied with two baffles. The standard audiophile baffle with no visible fixing screws is fitted. If required, this can easily be swapped for the alternative cloth covered version, which is designed with the same profile as the naked baffle. Both types of baffle fit snugly around the tweeter and are both gently contoured around the woofers. So, unlike a conventional grille frame, there are no obstructions or sharp edges to cause reflections and sound colorations. The sound from both types of baffle will therefore sound similar

Tweeter

Epos has developed a soft-dome tweeter for the Epic and Elan range. By using virtual-performance CAD simulation tools, this new tweeter has been designed to achieve the accuracy and speed of a metal dome but with smoothness associated with a soft dome. It has a low resonance frequency, high sensitivity and extended high frequency response. With its 25mm (one inch) doped-fabric dome, short horn, high-temperature Ferro-fluid cooled voice-coil and shielded neodymium magnet, it is capable of high output levels for extended periods. Its natural high sensitivity is necessary to match the much increased output from the new bass and mid-range

drivers.

Mid-Bass

A long-throw 8 Ohm 156mm bass/mid driver has been developed for the Elan 30. Built on to an open-frame cast-aluminium alloy chassis, with a generously ventilated spider and vented magnet pole, this driver minimises colorations and distortions while allowing greater sound pressure levels than earlier Epos drivers.

The bass/mid units feature a high-quality polypropylene cone and bullet-shaped dust cap. These form a stiff yet pliable, well-damped structure which retains its shape, even at high power. This helps the woofers to produce a dynamic sound, with a very even frequency response and naturally smooth roll-off. The lower woofer is rolled-off (filtered) above 800Hz by the crossover, allowing the top mid-woofer to play bass and mid-range smoothly. The mid-woofer is rolled-off (filtered) at 3.6 kHz by the crossover to integrate properly with the tweeter. This is essentially a true 2-1/2 way configuration.

Both woofers are loaded by a very large diameter port, flared at both ends, to reduce turbulence. Together they produce plenty of clean deep bass coupled with a clear, smooth and detailed mid-range.

A special feature of this floor-standing speaker is its high sensitive, making it suitable for use with a wide range of amplifiers, from as small as 12.5 Watts to as large as 150 watts into 4 Ohms. So, tube fans should find this amp a perfect match.

Crossover

In typical Epos fashion, the Elan 30 crossover is as simple as we can make it: both the woofer and tweeter networks are 2nd order filters at 800 Hz and 3.6k Hz. To ensure the highest sound quality, all the resistors are metal oxide, all the capacitors are high-quality polypropylene-foil dielectric types, and internal wiring uses proprietary solid-core wire covered in a sponge sheath. Inductors

are designed for low distortion even at high powers: air-core for the tweeter and an over-sized laminated-iron core for the woofer. All connections to drive units and crossover are hand soldered. The input terminals are bi-wiring, using a proprietary metal terminal panel with solid metal binding post equipped for 4mm plus and large spade lugs.

B&W Matrix 803 loudspeakers

Ideas from the B&W innovation pool.

The Matrix 803 contain an upper bass/midrange ubit in Kevlar - aB&W inovation now copied by many other manufacturers - and a Cobex cone bass unit with a modified matrix 801 tweeter mounted on top of the enclosure.

Throughout the Matrix 800 Series B&W Kevlar  cone drivers are employed to produce a unique break-up pattern which enables the speakers response to roll-off in a controlled manner aabove their working range. Kevlar's unusual directional weave induces a largely self-cancelling resonant pattern across the cone.

Air is moved around close to the surface but no intrusive output is produced by the resonance. In consequence the Kevlar cone bass/midrange driver offers up a significantly more neutral sound with higher information retrieval. In the Matrix 803 the Cobex cone lower bass driver is optimised for bass frequencies as its performance is confined to below the lower midrange. A specially formulated rubber surround enhances both drivers performance giving higher electrical/mechanical damping ratios, resulting in a more accurate and faster sound when reproducing bass transients.

At high frequencies, the modified Matrix 801 tweeter incorporates magnetic fluid cooling to damp any unwanted resonances leading to noticeably smoother response, and in the process, more than dounling the tweeter's power handling. The tweeter's position on top of the enclosure provides a spaciousness of image not found in many other loudspeakers.

Electro-Voice Dominator speakers

The Dominator is a three-way, all-horn stage speaker system. Designed for the stage or disco, where the extremely high efficiency of a horn system is desirable, the Dominator offers excellent performance in a small package without the "honky" traditional sound of a horn system.

The Dominator employs an EVM15L feeding a folded horn for the low end. The heart of the Dominator is a newly designed midrange horn which was carefully designed to provide exceptionally wide horizontal dispersion. The Electro-Voice 1829 is coupled to the new horn to achieve a fantastic sound for the midrange. The ST350A tweeter with its smooth response and 120 ° horizontal dispersion provides the high end for the Dominator system.

For those applications that require it, the Dominator is bi-ampable. The simple interchange of two 9-pin plugs on the rear connector panel converts the Dominator for use with a 600 Hz to 800 Hz active low-level crossover. The Electro-Voice XEQ-1 crossover makes a good companion to the Dominator for this purpose.

The exterior of the Dominator enclosure is 5/8" black-vinyl-covered plywood. Rubber feet and carrying handles are provided along with protective aluminum trim covering all edges, making the Dominator ready for the road.

Dual CS 721 turntable

 The Dual CS721,

single-play direct-drive turntable with fully automatic start and stop, plus continuous repeat.

The new Dual CS721 is the ultimate expression of the principles that determine the performance of tonearms and drive systems. Its stright line tubular tonearm pivots horizontally and vertically within a true, four-point gimbal, thus maintaining dynamic balance in all planes.

Another Dual innovation - Vertical Tonearm Control - contributes in yet another way to fine tracking performance. A vernier height adjustment over an 8 mm range paralleles the tonearm to the record with any cartridge. This eliminates the added mass of cartridge spacers, otherwise needed to achieve precise vertical tracking angle. In all, there are seven tonearm settings and adjustments - from stylus overhang to cueing height and descent speed - all serving to optimize tracking performance with any cartridge.

The direct-drive system of the CS721 is of comparable precision. The the electronically controlled DC , brushless motor is the smoothest and quietest ever made. A major contribution to this end result is an exclusive Dual feature: two stacked coil layers, each consisting of eight coreless bifilar wound coils, that overlap to achieve a gapless rotating magnetic field. This eliminates the successive magnetic pulses typical of all other motor designs.

Although the CS721 is Dual's most expensive model, it is hardly the most expensive turntable available today.

The direct drive Dual EDS 1000-2 motor, which was developed especially for the hi-fi record player, is a slow-running, brushless, DC supply electronic motor which gets its energy from a regulated power supply DC motors typically employ a mechanical switching commuter, but the Dual EDS 1000-2 utilizes two Hall Generators for electronic switching Hall Generators regulate four switching transistors successively to control the four windings of the motor. This cyclic switching of the field coils produces a rotational field which then causes rotary motion of the motor. The rotary field coils produce a voltage which is measured and compared to a voltage standard. Any resultant voltage differential is fed back and regulated the flow of current in the four switching transistors to regulate speed. This system of control prevents speed errors freater than 0,025%. The Dual EDS 1000-2 motor rotor is grooveless and has a magnetic interference (short circuit terminal), which runs with the rotor.the motor field coils are non-ferrous and mounted in the air gaps among the eight pole ring magnet of the rotor and the magnetic short-circuit terminal.

The unique design described above results in distinct advantages for the Dual EDS-1000-2 Without pole sensitivity, hysteresis or turbulance current loss and without disturbing groove frequencies, the Dual EDS 1000-2 guarantees you a completely vibration-free and unusually steady drive source for your hi-fi recordplayer.

The tonearm of Dual CS721 meets all the requirements for today's record players; maximum rigidity with lowest effective mass, and practically negligible bearing friction in the vertical and horizontal planes.

Studies of vibrations resulting from tonearm mass, weight, and compliance of the cartridge have shown that a special design of the tonearm counterbalance can increase tracking ability considerably, namely when the tonearm counterbalance is designed to absorb vibration energies within the resonant ranges of tonearm and chassis.

For this reason, the inner section of the counterbalance is tuned to the tonearm resonance and has, due to in phase-opposed vibrations, an anti-resonance effect. By excitation of the tonearm within the resonance area - energy vibrations between tonearm and anti-resonator are eliminated. The outer part of the counterbalance, designed as a higher tuned anti-resonator, prevents the transmission of chassis resonances to the tonearm.

The design of the tonearm counterbalance with twp antiresonance filters also improves the signal-to-noise ratio.

Akai AA-1125 receiver

Stereo Receiver AA-1125

Its ability to serve as an amplifier as well as a tuner, plus two tape monitor switches for monitoring independent tape decks or dubbing, make the AA-1125 perfectly versatile to fit your every audio need.

Outstanding Features

The differential pure complementary OCL circuitry with a plus/minus power supply is the reason for the AA-1125's better phase characteristics and excellent low range frequency directivity. It provides 25 watts per channel continuous power output, minimum RMS at 8 ohms from 40 to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0,5% Total Harmonic Distortion. And that's not all. The amplifier sections top grade, 3-stage, direct coupled negative feedback equalizer circuit extends phono input signal linearity to 110 mV (rms, 1 kHz) which assures a wide dynamic range and makes this not only a high quality receiver but top-notch amplifier as well. For FM broadcast listening, a stable FM stereo separation of more than 40 dB is possible due to a PLL (Phase Locked Loop) MPX section, and the IC equipped FM-IF section features a built-in quadrature detector that affords excellent linearity and minimal distortion over an exceptionally wide frequency range. In addition a 3-stage ceramic filter accounts for 70 dB FM selectivity. And the capture ratio is an amazing 1,3 dB. All these top quality circuits are located on one chassis board and the terminals have been directly soldered to the print board thus eliminating the regular mass of wires used in ordinary systems. This in turn eliminates signal loss and distortion pick-up due to wires and results in better tone quality.
