Semi-Automatic Direct-Drive Turntable System
The PS-T1 offers unprecedented value in a direct drive turntable system. Sony value, that brings uncompromised performance within the range of a modest sound budget. Sony quality, that includes the unerring precision of our exclusive DC servo motor. The flawless functioning of our newly designed "J" shaped tonearm. Play a favorite record on the PS-T1 and Experience Sony quality for yourself. Quality that's audible. Value that's remarkable.
Direct Drive System with Magnedisk Servo
Like every direct drive system, the PS-T1 has no intermediate speed reduction elements, since motor speed is exactly the same as platter speed, and the motor drive shaft is the spindle of the turntable. But this is where the similarities between Sony's drive system and other designs end. Unlike conventional direct drive systems, the PS-T1 features our exclusive BSL DC motor, which eliminates the cogging and noise common in other DC motors, which are structured with brushes and magnetic pole slots. Together with a heavy, precision-finished, diecast aluminum platter, this advanced design results in smooth rotational torque characteristics, fast start-up and minimal vibration.
An equally advanced speed monitoring system is employed, for the utmost speed stability, independent of line frequency and voltage fluctuations. The servo system consists of a multi-gap head, mounted on the perimeter of the turntable base, and a magnetic-coated platter rim. The magnetic head picks up a pulse signal recorded onto the magnetic coating, detecting any deviation from rated speed, which is instantly corrected.
The overall results of the advanced direct drive system are inaudible levels of rumble, wow and flutter.
Newly Designed Tonearm
The PS-T1's high-performance drive system is matched with a precision-engineered "J" shaped tonearm. The statically balanced aluminum arm offers precision tracking, for excellent sound and minimal record/stylus wear. It also offers an ideal combination of high rigidity and low resonance. Which means ideal tracking, and no undesirable low-frequency noise - a problem common in other systems due to record warp.
A front-mounted reject control provides fingertip operating convenience, and a viscous damped cueing lever assures precise manual tonearm placement. Additional system refinements give the PS-T1 a touch of luxury you'd expect to find on much costlier turntables. For example, speed can be adjusted up to ±4% for wide range pitch control. Direct reading gauges allow precise anti-skating and stylus force adjustment. A lightweight, plug-in headshell makes cartridge installation simple. And a tonearm safety clutch mechanism prevents damage if the tonearm is inadvertently held in place during the auto-return cycle.
