JVC KD-D4 cassette deck

True Convenience Is in The Limelight

Innovative JVC engineers have come up with a truly easy-to-use cassette deck, abounding with sophisticated devices for convenience and fun. Tape operation is smooth and trouble-free with the soft-operating buttons. Peak levels are shown at five frequencies for easy spectrum analysis on a fluorescent tube. The digital readout lets you know metered tape length, elapsed time, remaining recording/playback time, and the order of any selection being played at any given moment. The readout is selectable with a twist of a knob. A deck couldn't be more delightful, more carefree more fun.

Two-colour fluorescent SPI: A most useful multi-peak indicator

A spectro-peak indicator is the most useful, most accurate way to set optimum recording levels. It features five bars to show peak levels at five frequencies. In addition, there are two VU-reading bars (one for each channel) as well as one peak-reading bar for the composite output. It's one of the most comprehensive and useful level indicating system ever conceived.

Electronic multi-function digital counter: A versatile and useful indication.

The digital counter on the KD-D4 offers multiple functions, all useful and sure to add to your recording and playback delight. In addition to serving as a precision 4-digit electronic tape counter, it works at the twist of a knob, as an elapsed-time counter with a time accumulating function, a counter that displays remaining tape left in minutes and seconds, and an indicator for the JVC multiple music scan system described below.

JVC multiple music scan: Skip up to 20 selections to cue in on the one of your choice, instantly.

JVC's multiple music scan system has made selection of a particular song on a tape as simple an operation as on a record. And you can skip up to 20 selections on the way. Once you get used to it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without this feature before.

Mechanical logic for soft-touch operation

Trhe tape transport employs a JVC-exclusive mechanical logic system. By the ingenious use of precision cams and gears, the rotational power of the motor has been tapped so that you can enjoy soft-touch button operation for all modes.

JVC KD-D35 cassette deck

Fine Performance Teamed with Advanced Features Metal Cassette Deck

In many ways the KD-D35 is equipped to handle just about any taping situation. It's fitted with JVC's Metaperm rec/Play head for ful fidelity when utilizing metal tapes. The LED multi-peak indicators assure optimum recording levels. And for convenience, the KD-D35 is not lacking. JVC's velvety mechanical logic control system gives the deck luxurious soft-touch control. The single music scan system lets you zero in on the next selection ahead, or return to the exact beginning of the one you're listening to. For the money, you can't beat the performance and convenience offered by the KD-D35.

Mechanical logic control for soft-touch operation.

Most single-motor cassette decks have piano-key type transport controls, requiring firm pressure so that they engage properly. Not the KD-D35. JVC engineers have come up with a transport design that uses the rotational momentum of the motor/flywheel and a series of precision cams to operate all transport controls. Response is positive and only a soft-touch is required.

7-LED multi-peak indicator - one per channel

JVC first introduced their 5-LED multi-peak indicator several years ago to complement the standard VU meters. But the usefulness of the system was so widely recognized with mechanical VU meters altogether in many of our decks and expanded the meters to seven LEDs, more than adequate resolution for accurate reading of peak levels in programme material. Perfect recording levels are a cinch to set with the KD-D35.

Single music scan: An extra bonus

JVC's single music scan system iis an extra that should be standard on all decks. Once you use it, you'll see why. Quickly locating a particular section on a tape - the beginning of the one you're now listening to or the beginning of the next one - is a snap; all it takes is a touch of a button or two.

Metaperm Rec/Play head is ready for metal tapes.

The introduction of metal tapes required a great change in existing head designs because of the far higher current requirements JVC's metaperm Rec/Play head is fully capable of fine performance, whatever the tape type selected erase heads also required radical redesigning. Our 2-gap ferrite head is designed to give all tapes, even metal, a double dose of erasure, your assurance that tapes will sound quiet.

Dahlquist M907 loudspeakers

Ask any true audiophile and you'll be told that Dahlquist's legendary DQ-10 influenced a whole generation of loudspeakers. It showed a whole generation of engineers that some of the  classic problems in loudspeaker design could be solved. For the first time, a multi-way dynamic system eliminated the "boxy" sound that had plagued speakers. It did this by controlling diffraction (the delayed emission of sound from cabinet edges and surface discontinuities near each speaker driver) and by virtually eliminating the box. The DQ-10 made an enormous impact when it was offered to an eager public and remained the system of choice for 14 years. Today, the DQ-10 has been succeeded by the DQ-20 which represents the choice for music lovers who insist on having the best there is.. Now, Dahlquist offers a series of audiophile-quality loudspeaker systems at modest price, making Dahlquist performance available to many more music lovers.

The Problem

Speaker systems confined to enclosures have essentially been compromises between high efficiency with wide dynamic range on one hand and smooth, linear, low coloration on the other. Sadly, the latter required a sacrifice of dynamic range and efficiency.

The Dahlquist Solution

The Dahlquist M Series ends the need to compromise. Originally designed for recording and broadcast studios, new techniques now make it possible to offer several models for home use. In the Dahlquist tradition, the M Series solves many of the problems that still plague other speaker systems.

The Dahlquist M Series loudspeakers are the first fully enclosed systems to reproduce all the of the subtle, low level details of the music in the midst of extremely high level music signals. The reproduction of such dynamic shadings makes music come startlingly alive.

The Dahlquist M907

The M907 is a unique blend of technologies. This three-way system has the Dahlquist Un-Box enclosure and critically matched loudspeaker drivers, as do the other members of the M Series. But, in an exciting departure, the M907's specially designed midrange driver shares the cylindrical loading originally developed for the DQ-20. as a result, the M907 not only gives the listener superb performance over a wider range of frequencies, it gives an extra measure of performance in the critical midrange, where most of the music "happenes".

But, the M907 doesn't stop there, it recreates the original positions of the musical instruments with exceptional fidelity. Further, the M907's reproduction of soundstage height, width, and depth draws the listener into the performance. These exceptional capabilities are apparent as life-sized images in space. If a first audition suggests a traditional low-efficiency design, don't be foolded. Experienced and demanding listeners are surprised by the way the M907 delivers all of the music's dynamic shading when driven with even a medium-powered amplifier or receiver.

And it still doesn't stop.

One of the hallmarks of Dahlquist loudspeakers is the coherency of the total sound. The M907's three drivers blend together seamlessly. As a result, harmonic relationship are accurately preserved. Individual instruments, and especially the human voice, retain their own distinct characters.

Naturally, as is expected from a Dahlquist loudspeaker system, the M907 incorporates an advanced and remarkable anti-diffraction technique which enhances accurate stereo imaging and greatly contributes to open, spacious and accurate sound reproduction.

Dahlquist M905 loudspeakers

Dahlquist demonstrated conclusively that some of the classical problems which plagued the delivery of music in the home could be solved. The Dahlquist DQ10 remedied the problems of diffraction distortion and thus made an enormous impact when it was offered to an eager public. It remained the system of choice for many years. Today, it has succeeded by the DQ20, which is eagerly sought by music lovers who insist on having the best there is. Now, Dahlquist  offers a series of highquality speaker systems at modest prices, making Dahlquist  performance available to many more music lovers.

In the Dahlquist  tradition, the M Series solves many of the problem that still plague other speaker systems.

The Dahlquist  M Series loudspeakers are the first to reproduce all of the subtle, low level details of the music in the midst of extremely high level music signals. The M905 is capable of reproducing the most exquisite nuances available from analog sources as well as the peak high level signals from digitl sources.

The M905 delineates soundstage height, width and depth. Its exceptional capabilities are apparent as life-size images in space. A first audition suggests a sophisticated, low-efficiency design. Thus, most experienced and demanding listeners are astonished when they realize the efficiency of the Dahlquist M905

The M905 maintains the traditional Dahlquist  virtues of coherent driver blending and faithful reproduction of harmonic relationships. Moreover, when challenged to reproduce voice, the M905 does so with astonishing ease and accuracy.

Sony PS-3300 turntable

Sony unveils the PS-3300, a $200 direct-drive turntable that's semi-automatic. So the contest between our PS-3300 and their vaunted PL-510 is really no contest. Because in the crassest terms, we give you more ;an automatic arm return and a reject button. And that's a substantial difference, for no difference in price. What's more, we didn't shave anything to make it possible.

The PS-3300 has a finely crafted direct drive system with a brushless and slotless DC servo-controlled motor.

The PS-3300 innovates with a speed monitoring system that state troopers would love to get their hands on; an electronic process using an 8-pole megnetic pick-up head and a pulse coated platter rim. Plus there's independent fine speed adjustments, a tonearm that's so sensitive it's almost neurotic, and so on.

And to see the attention to detail that Sony stands for, note what the PS-3300 stands on. Bell-shaped rubber feet that are specially constructed to prevent both acoustic and mechanical feedback (When it comes to feedback, we put our feet down)

They absorb vibrations - whether from footsteps bouncing on the floor or sound waves bouncing off the wall. Otherwise, these vibrations would be transferred to the stylus, amplified, and be transffered back to the stylus - creating a vicious cycle.

If you're wondering how we managed to do this - how our semi-automatic shot down their high-flying manual - our response is a brief one.

Sony relied on its engineers.

Lyngdorf TacT SDAI-2175 amplifier

Lyngdorf SDAI 2175 is a compact, high performance semi digital integrated switch-mode amplifier utilizing some of the circuit topologies originally developed for the Lyngdorf Millennium amplifier. Due to the switch-mode topology, with an efficiency of up to 85%, the SDAI 2175 will provide its output power with minimal heat dissipation. A massive power supply with a 650VA toroid transformer and more than 40000uF capacitors ensures that the SDAI 2175 can deliver the current to drive even the most demanding loudspeakers.

The SDAI 2175 has 2 gold-plated XLR connectors accepting balanced input signals and 6 stereo inputs with 2 gold-plated RCA connectors for unbalanced signals. The SDAI 2175 has a stereo tape out of the selected line level input signal and pre out of the selected input signal after the volume control as either balanced signal from the gold-plated XLR connectors or unbalanced from the gold-plated RCA connectors.

The volume control is implemented as a high precision digital controlled analog attenuation in 0.1 dB steps over a 100 dB range. Input selection is performed via precision relays with double gold plated construction of the contact set. These kind of relays are normally only used in expensive measurement equipment for high linearity and low losses.

All controls can be operated from the front panel via the logical user interface or by use of the remote control. Or as an option the setup and operation can be performed via a PC interface.

The input signal is fed to the volume control circuit via an AC coupled true instrumentation type input amplifier. Except for this AC coupling, the SDAI 2175 is fully DC coupled with no bypass capacitors or DC servos to degrade the performance. The protection circuitry in the SDAI 2175 shuts down the unit in case of over-temperature, DC voltage on the outputs and too high output current. The amplifier will resume normal operation when the fault condition is no longer present.

A trigger output on a 3.5mm jack connector allows the SDAI 2175 to control one or more SDA2175’s power condition.

Lyngdorf DP-1 loudspeakers

The naked truth

The DP-1 is yet another boundary breaker from Lyngdorf. We have solved the problem of cabinet induced distortion by simply removing the cabinet!

DP-1 is an open dipolar design that radiates sound both forwards and backwards. In this way we obtain a perfect sound radiation pattern and avoid all cabinet-induced coloration of the upper bass and midrange.

Thanks to highly advanced drivers and the absence of a box the DP-1 has a remarkably airy, neutral and extremely detailed music quality. It combines pure sound as known from the very best electrostatic speakers with the power capability of dynamic speakers. The result is the very best from both worlds – a truly brilliant solution!

The stylish speaker has been designed for frequencies above 300 Hz and for cooperation with a BassDirect speaker like BW-1 or the larger W-210 from Lyngdorf. Of course it performs the best in a complete Lyngdorf system where all acoustical parameters are under full control.

The extraordinary drivers are specially customized for the Damping Factor-1. the ScanSpeak tweeter has a 1" textile dome which has been coated several times to achieve the exact desired combination of dynamic linearity and resonance damping. The ingenious magnet structure practically eliminates electrical phase shifts and distortion. The result is an incredibly smooth, linear, dynamic and amazingly transparent sound.

The 6,5" Seas woofer is extremely advanced; both the diaphragm and the chassis are made of magnesium. This ensures a minimum of break-up in the cone and a completely nonmagnetic chassis that concentrates the force of the magnet around the voice coil. The unit has a solid metal center plug instead of a traditional dust cap. That makes the cone lighter and faster and eliminates unwanted air pressure behind the cap. Furthermore it provides extra cooling for the voice coil which increases power handling and sonic stability at high volume levels.

The front baffle of the Damping Factor-1 is made of seven layers of MDF board glued together to shape the solid 55 mm thick profile that provides optimum acoustic properties for the drivers. It has a beautiful piano finish comprising of no less than 10 layers of lacquer, each hand polished to a deep, black, glossy shine.
