The L60T provides professional sound in the home environment. The elegant two-way, floor standing system, with 8-inch low frequency transducer, teams JBLs renowned titanium high frequency transducer (O35Ti) with a laminated high polymer cone mid/low frequency trasducer. JBL L20T loudspeakers

The JBL philosophy goes back to 1929, when James B. Lansing began building small loudspeakers for radios and phonographs. A new challenge soon interested him; Loudspeakers for movie theatres. "Talkies" had come of age and there was a need for loudspeakers that could fill the large movie houses with high quality sound. Lansing perfected techniques for milling flat wire and winding it on edge for superior voice coils. He also made vital contributions to compression driver technology, and many of this designs were forerunners of today's production models.

The L20T compact monitor, a two-way bookshelf system with a 6-1/2" low frequency transducer, offers extended frequency response, original dynamic range, and the reproduction of the full sound stage in the home. Sansui Computerized Full-Automatic Direct-Drive Quartz-Servo Turntable with D-O-B Tonearm

Silicon Dioxide (Quartz) Oscillator: A ready reference for dynamic response.

Most audiophiles are familiar with the use of reference oscillators in servosystems which help keep platter speeds accurate in direct-drive turntables. In the case of the FR-Q5 we have employed the most trustworthy of all-an energized silver of silicon dioxide (quartz crystal) which is entirely impervious to all conceivable variables such as changes in power-line frequency and voltage and in external/internal fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

The speed of the platter is detected and compared against the quartz reference signal via a PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) circuit contained in reliable ICs; variations in load, such as the drag caused when the stylus tracks a highly modulated groove, are instantly caught and corrected to result in outstanding dynamic response. Speed accuracy is just about as close to absolute as you can ever expect to come drift is never more than ±0,002%.

 

Magnetic-Pattern Detection: The correction is faster than the eye.

Sansui's all-new magnetic pattern detection system, generating as many as 960 pulses per each rotation of the platter, makes it possible to correct any speed deviation via the quartz/PLL servo in less than the blink of an eye.

Along the inside rim of the platter is a pattern of 960 magnetic poles; fixed beneath the platter is a stationary magnetic head - somewhat like the playback head on a tape deck - which senses the changing polarity of the revolving pattern and sends a "report" to the servo. If there are more (or fewer) pulses than there should be, the phase-comparison stage of the servo detects them and the controlling stage converts them to correctional information, slowing down (or speeding up) the direct-drive motor.

 

Instantaneous Rise & Electronic Brake: Absolutely no overshoot or undershoot.

Almost before you can remove your finger from the Start/Stop button - as rotation it is moving at the selected speed without any overshoot or undershoot. Additionally, when you change from 45 rpm to 33-⅓ rpm, or when you tell the platter to stop the built-in electronic brake comes into play for fast, accurate results.

 

Brushless Direct-Drive Motor: impeccable performance from high-precision parts.

In our special design we have employed the DC brushless, saturable-core system with a rotor-position sensor. It responds quickly and accurately to the control information it receives from the quartz/PLL servo. To reduce friction and wear, the motor shaft is made of special hard stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish in a "centerless" polishing technique to achieve an overall roundness never more than 0,2 µ from absolute. And for the thrust bearing, itself of a special low-wear nylon compound, we have used a newly-developed aerospace-grade lubricant.

 


Manual Operation: Just touch the tonearm

There is no switch on the Sansui FR-Q5 to defeat the full automatic operation. If you wish to use the tonearm manually, simply lift it up with the fingerpiece on the headshell; the built-in "computer" and its optical sensors will detect your touch and put the full automatic system on standby while you select another track on your record or return the arm to its rest.

 

D-O-B Tonearm: A novel theory put to practical use for purer sound.

After many long years of experimentation and experience, Sansui has developed what just may be the world's most accurate tonearm. In our patent-pending "Dyna-Optimum-Balanced) arm the dynamic fulcrum is placed precisely on the point or node of vibration. Because of this the arm exhibits very high stability and its counterweight, headshell and support components show almost none of the microscopic wobbling vibrations which, in other arms, cause still more mutual resonance and pass it on the stylus. In short, our D-O-B suffers none of the compound resonance which prevent accurate tracking and give rise to frequency modulation to "muddy" musical reproduction.

 

Computerized Tonearm - A technological First

A kind of electronic "brain" assisted by a team of optical sensors, controls the operation of the fully automatic tonearm on the Sansui FR-Q5 turntable with unprecedented accuracy. It monitors the moment-to-moment position of the arm, oversees the functions of the separate motor which lifts and returns the arm when required, and even memorizes action sequences.

Some people would call this a "computerized" system, and they wouldn't be far wrong. Actually, it makes use of a CPU (Central Processing Unit) which is contained in an LSI (Largo-Scale IC). Therefore, its reliability and precision cannot be bettered.

 

Quick and accurate response without compromise

Having developed one of the world's most sensitive tonearms for the FR-Q5, Sansui engineers weren't about to compromise that sensitivity by using an ordinary mechanically-linked full-auto system. Thanks to the CPU "brain" the arm remains entirely free during play, when the record ends, or if you touch the Start/Stop button at any time, the CPU sends a command to lift the arm and return it to its rest gently and quickly.

 

Fully protected against all conceivable mishaps

That's quite a promise - that this system is entirely accident proof. But it's true. The CPU permits the incorporation of a "fail-safe" system which gives total protection to the arm and its motor, its cartridge stylus, and your records.

If, for instance, you forget to unlock the tonearm clip before you touch the Start/Stop button, the CPU instantly countermands the start order and shuts off the arm motor before damage can occur.

 

Light-touch switches make full control easy.

All control switches on the FR-Q5 are short-stroke types requiring only the slightest finger pressure for positive operation.

After powering on the turntable, select speed and record size, place your record on the platter and touch the Start/Stop button; the CPU "brain" orders the arm up and over the opening track, then lets it fall slowly to the beginning groove. When the record ends, the optical sensor for lead-out informs the "brain" which immediately orders the arm's return. The turntable is then shut off automatically, unless you have also pushed the Repeat button, in which case the lead-in, play and return process will continue until you order it to stop, again with a light touch on the Start/Stop button.

 

The independent tonearm motor "remembers" the first noe.

As we have mentioned, there is a second motor in the Sansui FR-Q5, independent from the direct-drive platter motor, used exclusively to lift, cue, and return the tonearm. Its computerized operation is controlled electronically but it employs a mechanical damping system to ensure that the stylus is lowered to the very beginning of the lead-in groove every time when you cue a record.

Sansui Direct-Drive Turntable Automatic-Return/Shutoff

 

Emphasis on extremely accurate platter speed and long-life reliability is a Sansui hallmark in all our turntables; Sansui uses much the same high-technology drive designs in all models, whatever the price. In the case of the FR-D3 with automatic return/shutoff the drive is direct, offering a phenomenally low wow/flutter of only 0,028% (WRMS) and a very high Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 72 dB. For convenience, we've gone beyond the basics to create a tonearm return system that causes absolutely no drag on the tonearm during play.

For good looks, the Sansui designers have retained the slim profile and uncluttered lines you'll find in turntables costing much. Much more/ hear the FR-D3 in action at any audio showroom offering the best from Sansui where it's all hi-fi.

 


High-Torque Saturable-Core Motor - The specs are spectacular

Sansui patents are now pending on this unique and highly effective motor. It is basically a so-called "brushless" design, eliminating physical switching to offer virtually noiseless operation at all times.

We use the time-tested pole/slot technique. But with more poles and slots than usual. This provides higher torque generation, smoother rotation and higher speed accuracy. As mentioned, the specifications achieved are spectacular: 0,028% (or less) wow and flutter (WRMS) and an excellent 72 dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio.

 


Material/Matching: Patience equals precision when it comes to making the motor.

Super-hard carbon chrome steel is used for the motor shaft in the Sansui FR-D3. this high-quality material - one of the hardest known to man - is mirror finished to a roundness tolerance of only 0,2 µ or better, then fitted into a mirror-finished thrust sleeve to reduce friction.

The entire assembly then rides on a disulphide-mixed nylon thrust bearing and is constantly bathed in a special lubricant developed for the aerospace industry. All parts are machined to match with very high precision - your assurance - that the original performance specifications will be available over years and years of operation.

 

Smooth & Automatic: Tonearm return system is a convenience you can't refuse.

Sansui has perfected a tonearm return system that does not rely on crude mechanical linkages; the tonearm is entirely free to track the record during play and its sensitivity is never compromised.

Simply set your record on the platter, cue the tonearm over the selected band and operate the Cue lever, tonearm descends and play begins. When the lead-out groove is reached and the tonearm begins to accelerate, the auto return system is triggered, the tonearm is lifted and returned gently to its rest, and power is automatically shut off. You never need touch the tonearm.

 

Trackability: A gram or so is all you need

Proof of the high sensitivity in the tonearm is in its ability to track even the most heavily-modulated record grooves with about a one gram stylus pressure. But at at whatever setting, the support with its 52 super-hard steel bearings (five each for the two horizontal pivots plus 21 each for the two verticals) performs faultlessly, freeing the arm from undue friction in all directions.

 

Lightweight Arm: Worth its weight in gold.

Inside the "S" shaped tubing of the FR-D3's tonearm is acoustic absorbent (pet.pend.), at the "tail" is a resin weight shaft, dynamically de-coupled from the arm via a rubber device to further damp resonance. The headshell is no less important. Clean reproduction (without the "mud" caused by headshell resonance) is achieved by casting the unit of low-porosity aluminum in a onepiece unit. Two additional features also deserve mention; one is the anti-skating device on the tonearm to prevent unbalanced stereo reproduction and the other is the use of gold-plated connection pins to assure always-clean electrical interface with the cartridge.

 

Pitch is Perfect: strobe and ±3% speed change control

For normal use you'll watch the wideband strobe at the front of the platter, tuning the speed control until the strobe dots appear to be "standing still". When you wish to slow down or speed up the platter, however, the latitude of pitch change is a wide plus/minus three percent, permitting you to tune the musical pitch on your record with your piano, etc.

 

Disc-Hugging Mat: Slips, slurs and resonance are ended for good.

Today's long-playing records are tapered from the center to the edge in a gradient of 1:350. that's barely enough of a "hill" to be seen by the naked eye, but it's more than a small thread to quality sound reproduction if the mat under the record on a turntable assumes it doesn't exist. So, rather than making our mat perfectly flat, we've cupped it on that same 1:350 ratio. It "hugs" your record to prevent slips and slurs, and to cancel any dead space under the record that might cause resonance.

 

Smart & Simple; Stylish cabinet features up-front controls.

All controls on the Sansui FR-D3 except the Cue lever are positioned on the easily-accessible front panel. For the cabinet itself we have chosen a proven "no-how" design, featuring slim, smart looks. The four isolators in the cabinet suspension system end acoustic feedback before it reaches your record.

When mounted on a strudy shelf - or better yet, on a custom-made audio rack from Sansui along with your other Sansui hi-fi components - the FR-D3 makes a fine addition to your listening room both in looks and performance. Pioneer QX-8000A 4-channel receiver

To compose an ideal 4-channel stereo system, the QX-8000A, a solid state AM/FM stereo receiver, can be combined with four speaker systems, tape decks, turntables, etc. With a 4-channel stereo tape deck or cartridge tape player installed, the QX-8000A can provide a discrete 4-channel playback of programs recorded on tape.

 

4-Channel Reproduction from Matrix 4-Channel Source

The self-contained matrix circuit permits 4-channel reproduction from matrix 4-channel records or FM stereo broadcasts. The mode switch has positions for regular matrix and SQ matrix reproduction, allowing reproduction to take either of these forms.

 

Matrix Reproduction from 2-Channel Source

A 2-channel signal from a record of FM broadcast can be reproduced in 4-channel form via the regular or SQ matrix circuit. In this case, the result is an improvement over ordinary 2-channel stereo reproduction.

 

2-Channel Stereo Performance

Conventional 2-channel stereo performance can be provided through an arrangement or two speaker systems in the front; Ieft-side speaker system and right-side speaker system. A 2-way multi-amplifier system can be set up by installing an electronic crossover network.

Acoustical field reproduction from 4-channel stereo

The amplifier section consists of four separate channels having excellent frequency response and very low distortion, providing for 4-channel discrete reproduction of a 4- channel source (recorded tape).

 Choice of matrix decoder

The OX-8000A offers a choice of two decoders; the regular matrix and the SO matrix. The source may be a matrix recording or FM broadcast of a matrix recording. The result is realistic 4-channel reproduction.

 Matrix circuit for ordinary 2-channel stereo

Use of the internal matrix circuit enhances the effect of ordinary 2-channel stereo source material, over and above that normally obtainable.

 Also works as standard 2-channel stereo receiver

lf you only have one pair of speakers now, you can use the OX-8000A as a regular 2-channel stereo receiver and add the other two speakers at a later date.

 Permits 4-Channel or 2-Channel tape recording

lf you already own a 2-channel stereo tape deck, you can go on using it for recording and playback as before. However, if you plan to buy a 4-channel tape recorder, you can use fully the discrete 4-channel capabilities, playing back 4-channel pre-recorded tapes with true 4-channel sound.

There are three balance controls: front left-right balance, rear left-right balance, and front-rear balance. These give you complete control over the 4-channel sound field. Also, separate stereo headphones for the front and rear channels are provided important when monitoring 4- channel tape recordings. Other features include "speakers in operation" indicator lamps, program indicator lamps, loudness switch, high and low filter switches, FM muting switch, 300Q and 75O (coaxial) FM antenna terminals, and a 4-position channel mode selector.

 Versatile tape-to-tape duplicating facilities

Normal 2-channel tape-to-tape dubbing is possible too, as well as 4-channel tape-to-tape duplicating.

 FET-equipped FM tuner

The FM tuner is equipped with an FET in its front end to improve selectivity and sensitivity. Also, the lF stage employs one hybrid and one monolithic lC, replacing numerous transistors, ceramic filters, etc., and raising the tuner's sensitivity and selectivity. The FM MPX decoder works according to the time switching system and boasts excellent channel separation. Tuning is made easy by the linear FM dial and the double (signal strength and center zero tuning meters.

 Built-in AM ferrite Bar antenna

Sensitive and highly directional. An outdoor AM antenna is not required in most cases.

 Low-distortion High-Power Audio amplifier
