Infinity Quantum 5 loudspeakers

 Infinity Quantum 5
Hard to believe until you hear it  - and even then; that a moderately-sized speaker at a most reasonable price can house the most advanced high-and low-frequency drivers (plus a high-definition midrange dome) and set them free to operate in all their realism.
That's the beauty of the Quantum 5 by Infinity.
Our superlative EMIT and the revolutionary Infinity -Watkins Dual-Drive Woofer are vital ingredients of our formidable Quantum reference Standard speaker-and-equalization system priced at several thousand dollars.
Now the Quantum 5 - at a small fraction of the cost of the Quantum Reference Standard  - has an EMIT and a dual-voice coil woofer of its own. And a sound that would be a revelation from any size speaker, at any price.

IN a woofer, two voice-coils are better than one. In performance, our dual-voice-coil woofer is better than any other.
Impossible combination: good transient response, sufficient power, acceptable efficiency, and extended bass range - all from an enclosure of reasonable size.
Now Infinity brings you Wiliams Watkin's ingenious solution to problems of a speaker's fundamental resonance, back-EMF, and the resultant impedance peak.
The Infinity-Watkins Dual-Drive Woofer, available only in Infinity's Quantum Series speakers, works like this.
In the frequency range where rising impedance and falling response were considered inevitable, a second voice coil takes over. In the region of resonance, it presents a low impedance path to the amplifier.
Now back-EMF is reduced, so the speaker can make use of the amplifier's power at low frequencies. Now it isn't inherent resonance but input that controls the cone. Now extended bass response co-exists beautifully with accurate transient performance. Now the superb bass reproduction of the dual-voice-coil woofer is yours in a reasonably priced compact speaker, Infinity's marvelous Quantum 5.

Is this any way to treat a revolutionary woofer?
In our top-of-the-industry Quantum Reference Standard, the Watkins is the Oscar Peterson of woofers; it can loaf, and still out-perform the rest of the world. It is responsible for response only from its phenomenal floor of 18 Hz to an easy 100 Hz/
As used in the three-way Quantum 5, the revolutionary woofer handles a frequency range from 30 through 600 Hz. So we give the cone a special treatment to increase greatly its stiffness-to-mass ratio. This damping treatment eliminates a variety of circumferential modes and resonances that blur the bass and muddy the midbass in ordinary speakers. Low-frequency reproduction from the Quantum 5 is exciting in its combination of clarity with power. In the vital midrange, Quantum 5 uses Infinity's high-definition dome driver. It is exceptionally accurate in its range from 600 to 4000 Hz. And from 4000 Hz up - far up.

The superlative, soaring EMIT - clearly superior to domes and cones. And electrostatics.
In theory, the magnetic counter-part of the electrostatic tweeter would be just as clean, accurate, and high-ranging as the electrostatic - and trouble-free besides.
In fact, our exclusive EMIT with its magnets of the rare-earth substance Samarium Cobalt, the most powerful magnetic material on earth, is all of that and more.
The EMIT exhibits nearly perfect horizontal dispersion - clearly superior to electrostatics' narrow beaming of high frequencies. And EMIT, more than either electrostatics or conventional dome drivers, is capable of reproducing every transient peak, every fortissimo as accurately as every subtely in the most demanding recording. Listen.
IN scientific measurements and, more important, in listening tests, EMIT stays smooth as high as your ears can follow. beyond that, they keep going right up to 32,000 Hz. Infinity invented the Electromagnetic Induction Tweeter. And only Infinity offers you its advantages. It's standout technological advance and it blends beautifully with the midrange dome and Watkins woofer - thanks to Infinity's meticulous attention to crossover technology and phasing.
The resulting output of a Pair of Quantum 5 speakers has an almost pictorial depth. You place each musician or section front or rear, as well as left or right, as naturally as at a concert.

Infinity Quantum 4 loudspeakers

Infinity Quantum 4
The sound of this smallest floorstanding speaker in the Quantum Series is eloquent. It clearly proclaims that with Infinity, a music-lover who has to compromise on the cost of elements of an audio system doesn't have to suffer equal compromises on quality.
In 1976 our Quantum Line Source (height, well over five feet price well over $1000) set a whole new industry standard with the first use of superlative EMIT tweeters and the Infinity-Watkins Dual-Drive Woofer, among other advances.
Now The Quantum 4 (much smaller size, much lower price) seems certain to set the new standard for compact three-way speakers, with an EMIT and dual-voice-coil woofer ot its own. Among other advances.

What two voice coils do for our remarkable woofer.
It has always been impossible to get good transient response, sufficient power, an acceptable level of efficiency and extended bass range from an enclosure of reasonable size. Till now.
Now William Watkins has found, and Infinity has made excellent use of, the solution to problems of a speaker's fundamental resonance, back-EMF, and the resultant impedance peak. Watkins's invention, available in Infinity speakers and no others, is a woofer with two voice-coils, called the Infinity-Watkins Dual-Drive Woofer. It works like this:
Down among the frequencies where rising impedance and falling response were inevitable before, the second voice-coil takes over. In the region of resonance, it presents a low impedance path to the amplifier.
Now the speaker can make use of the amplifier's power at low frequencies, because back EMF is reduced. Now input rather than inherent resonance can control the cone. Now extended bass response and accurate transient performance can co-exist beautifully. Now you can enjoy the superb reproduction of the Dual-Drive Woofer in a compact speaker, the Quantum 4.

Is this any way to treat a revolutionary woofer?
In our top-of-the-industry Quantum Line Source, the Infinity-Watkins is the Oscar Peterson of woofers; it can loaf, and still out-perform the rest of the world. We've made it responsible for response only from its phenomenal floor of 18 Hz to an easy 200 Hz.
As used in the Quantum 4, the revolutionary woofer handles a frequency range from 30 through 600 Hz. We give the cone a special treatment that greatly increases the ratio of its stiffness to its mass. This damping treatment eliminates a variety of distortions, circumferential modes and resonances that otherwise could blur the bass and muddy the midbass. And low frequencies from the Quantum 4 are exciting in their combination of clarity with power.
Next up in the Quantum 4 array of drivers is Infinity's high-definition dome midrange driver. In its range from 600 to 4,000 Hz it speakers nothing but the accurate truth. And above all.

EMIT - the eminent exclusive tweeter that stays smooth as high as your ears can reach - and beyond.
Infinity wrote the book on the electrostatic tweeter. It was a story of triumph over adversity. Now we/ve gone the electrostatic on better.
Electrostatics, with their low-mass diaphragms driven uniformly overall, delivered sweet undistorted reproduction of high frequencies. But they were subject to voltage break-down and tended to "beam" sound narrowly.
Our dream of creating a trouble-free magnetic counterpart of the electrostatic became a beautiful reality after we hit on the use of the magnetically powerful rare-earth material called Samarium Cobalt.
now our EMIT - with Samarium Cobalt magnet provides gloriously accurate and musical high-frequency performance minus the limitations of electrostatics, plus nearly perfect horizontal dispersion and high power capability, clear up to a superauditory 32,00 Hz.
EMIT tweeters are used in Infinity speakers. And in no other speakers in the world.
In the Quantum 4 the Dual-Drive Woofer, dome midrange driver, an EMIT, and Infinity's meticulous attention to phasing and crossover technology join together to produce startlingly lifelike stereo imaging and depth.
The sound of a pair of Quantum 4 speakers would be a joy no matter what size enclosures or what price instruments it came from, From compact speakers in the Quantum 4 price range it is a revelation .

Thorens BTD-12S tonearm

Thorens BTD-12S Professional Tone Arm with exclusive cueing control for lowering and raising arm The Thorens BTD-12S tone arm is a classic example of Swiss craftsmanship. Designed for lowest possible inertia and friction, in both horizontal and vertical planes, the BTD-12S is ideal for pickup cartridges of the highest lateral and vertical compliance. The low inertia minimizes force on the stylus from warped and off-center records, assures positive contact between stylus and record groove, and reduces distortion as well as record and stylus wear to a minimum. Despite its very compact size,, the BTD-12S has less tracking error than many 16" arms (only 0,5(o) per inch). Special pivot design eliminates another source of distortion found in ordinary arms by keeping stylus perpendicular to the record at all times. The knob adjustment for stylus force (calibrated in grams) and the record-saving, stylus-saving are unequaled for convenience.

Outstanding Features
Cueing Device - A built-in precision cueing device raises and lowers the arm over the record when a knob is turned. When lifted, the arm is given a slight braking action to keep the stylus over the groove. When lowered, the arm is completely free of any interference from the cueing device.
Tracking Error - Only 0,5(o)/inch maximum with optimum stylus overhang
Bearings - Precision ball bearings on both axes reduce friction (lateral and vertical) to the order of 1/10 gram
Exclusive Pivot Design -  Ideally, the stylus axis a should remain in a vertical plane, defined by the stylus and the tangent to the record groove, for all up-and-down movements of the arm. In ordinary arms, this is impossible because the axis of the bearing for up-and-down motion is set at right angles to the straight part of the arm. This causes the ordinary arm to "cant" or lean the stylus to one side when in any position other than perfectly horizontal. The BTD-12S eliminates this source of distortion by setting the bearing at an angle to the straight part of the arm. The stylus in the BTD-12S thus never leans to either side for any height adjustment, any warped record.
Balancing -  With stylus force adjustment set to "0", the counterweight will balance the arm, with a 5-19 gram ( ,18 - ,67 oz.) cartridge installed, in both horizontal and vertical planes. Then, since stylus force is applied by a spring at any other setting of the adjustment, the arm remains in balance and is insensitive to out-of-level tables or floor vibrations
Stylus Force Adjustment - Calibrated in grams on a large, engraved scale for 2 to 8 grams with zero position for balancing.
Low-Frequency Resonance - Below audible range. Damping material isolates counterweight to prevent other undesirable resonance in audible range.
Plug-in Shell - AN aluminum plug-in shell accommodates any standard cartridge and comes with mounting hardware. A 4-pin (plus ground) connector provides electrical connections. A screw-secured slide on the shell permits easy, precise adjustment of stylus overhang.
Cables - Two shielded cables 39" (one meter) long, with standard phono connectors, and a separate ground wire are supplied. No soldering is necessary.
