Philips Spectron SP40 loudspeakers

 Philips SP40
Rugged Deep Response Woofer
To meet the specifications for the SP40, Philips engineers were obliged to design a woofer which could meet four rigid acoustic requirements; deep bass response, high efficiency, impeccable fidelity, and rugged durability. The newly designed 10" cone woofer offers all these features.
In any system, a woofer must provide rich, satisfying bass. The Sp40's woofer exceeds even the goals of fine speakers, however, reaching down to 30 Hz for full bottom. With a fundamental resonance frequency of 20 Hz, however, the driver also avoids the hollow, boxy  tones so often found in speakers of this size.
Construction of the cone is from fibre-filled pulp selected for its combination of strength and exceptional resistance to distortion. The driver itself is seated in a new high-compliance suspension.
At the heart of the woofer is Philips patented Feroxdure ferrite magnet and an all-aluminum voice coil. Feroxdure eliminates the need for massive unwieldy magnets which were formely required to create deep bass response. One light-weight Feroxdure magnets provides more strength than orthodox magnet of considerably greater size. At the same time, the aluminum wire-wound voice coil, which minimum mass, offers significantly less resistance to movement than the standard voice coil. And the all-aluminum bobbin radiates heat efficiently, one reason why this driver is so resistant to over-load; even at 60 watts (RMS) of power input, this woofer will stand up to stress.
The efficiency of the SP40 's woofer makes the unit a valuable addition to even moderately=powered system which normally cannot drive acoustic suspension speakers. Because of the new high-compliance suspension, the unit is able to deliver a sound pressure level of a full 96 dB at 1 m with acoustic distortion of less than 1.0% from power input of only 4 watts RMS.

Wide-Dispersion Midrange
The same design features which characterize the SP40's woofer have bean incorporated in the new 2" dome mid-range driver.
The same patented Feroxdure ferrite magnet and the all-aluminum voice coil ensure high efficiency and faithful reproduction along with surprisingly light weight. The power of this new driver is comparable to that of orthodox drivers much larger and heavier.
Normal speaker system force the mid-range driver and woofer to share the same baffle. This design allows interaction between the woofer and mid-range driver which can result in severe distortion. The new Philips mid-range driver is acoustically isolated in its own enclosure. The mid-range driver is capable of operating at full efficiency even outside the speaker cabinet.
Because of the directional nature of mid-range frequencies, the driver has been designed for wide dispersion. The total angle of dispersion is a full 120(o).

Special Acoustically Isolated Tweeter
The same design principles found in the woofer and mid-range driver have been utilized in the design of the new tweeter, a driver which ranks with the world's best.
A 1" dome design, the driver features a 1" copper wire-wound voice coil and the patented Philips Feroxdure magnet. The Feroxdure ferrite magnet packs considerably more power into the same size than orthodox magnets can offer strength means faster response and cleaner sound.
Like the mid-range driver, the tweeter is sealed in its own enclosure, isolating the driver from the woofer which could cause distortion. The tweeter is capable of operating at full efficiency even outside the speaker cabinet.

Phase Linear 4000 preamplifier

Phase Linear 4000
the stereo preamplifier designed to correct the shortcomings in the recording process. Noise inherent in tapes, FM broadcasts, and records is reduced to virtual inaudibility. Dynamic range reduced during recording is selectively restored to closely approximate the original information. This means that for the first time you can hear your music against a silent background. Now your music can extend upwards to life like levels - a kettle drum will have the power of a kettle drum - a cymbal will ring with the intensity of a cymbal.

How else would you describe a preamplifier with:
A peak Unlimiter that restores dynamics lost in recording to closely approximate the original
A Downward Expander that reads "gain riding" and expands dynamics down to precisely the intended level
An Auto-Correlator that makes record/tape hiss and FM broadcast noise virtually vanish without affecting musical content
Plus and Active Equalizer that gives you flat energy distribution over the full audio spectrum. Joystick Balance and Step Tone Controls that allow precise music tailoring to your listening environment and SQ and Phase Linear differential logic for Quad Sound.
The 4000 is an advanced stereo preamp that actually puts back in what recording studios take out, lets your music (at last) reach life-like levels without distortion; lets you (for the first time) hear your music from a silent background. It is , in a word , incredible.

McIntosh MC402 power amplifier

McIntosh MC402
Producing a minimum 400 watts per channel in stereo, 800 watts in mono, the MC402 delivers power that is fully balanced from input to speaker output. The extraordinary quad-differential design of the MC402 actually consists of four complete amplifier circuits. Each channel contains two amplifier circuits, each the mirror image of the other, whose outputs are combined in the unique McIntosh Output Autoformer® resulting in totally balanced operation from input to speaker output and the cancellation of virtually all noise and distortion.
The exclusive McIntosh Output Autoformer® is a handcrafted matching device that provides an ideal impedance match for all speaker types regardless of their rated impedance. Any departure from an optimum impedance match increases stress on the amplifier which threatens a rise in distortion as well as a reduction in the life expectancy of the amplifier. McIntosh Output Autoformers® enable the MC402 to operate at maximum efficiency and to always deliver full power, without stress, to any type of loudspeaker.

Exclusive McIntosh
Power Assurance System - A collection of technologies that enhance performance and reliability while protecting the amplifier and loudspeakers.
Power Guard - A waveform comparison circuit continuously monitors both input and output signals. Power Guard dynamically adjusts the input level to avoid clipping while preventing harsh sounding distortion.
Sentry Monitor - Fuse-less short-circuit protection circuit disengages the output stage before current exceeds safe operating level – resets automatically.
Thermal Sensors - Protects against overheating if cooling air is blocked and output transistors become too hot.
DC Failure Protection - Protects speaker against output circuit failure. Any DC current that appears in the output is shunted to ground by the output autoformer.
Exclusive Double Balanced Circuity - Each channel of the MC402 consists of two balanced power amplifiers operating in push-pull with their outputs combined in a McIntosh Autoformer. This double balanced configuration from input to output cancels virtually all distortion
Output Autoformer - Unique McIntosh technology delivers the full rated amplifier output with the least possible distortion into loudspeaker impedances of 2, 4, or 8 Ohms; you get all the power you paid for and the freedom to choose any loudspeaker.
Wattmeter - Swift, accurate response reveals program peaks so staying within the power limits of your loudspeakers is easy.
Turn-on Delay - Delays operation for about two seconds after turn-on, to silence any pops or thumps generated by other equipment.
Soft Start Inrush Protection - Eliminates component stress during turn-on. Theristors in the power transformer act as a cushion against inrush current
Balanced and Unbalanced Inputs
Balanced connections guard against induced noise and al-
low long cable runs without compromising sound quality.
Illuminated Power Meters - The Illuminated Power Output Watt Meters on the MC402 are peak responding, and indicate the true power output of the amplifier. The Peak Watt Hold Mode allows the meters to temporarily stay at the highest power output and then slowly decay. The Front Panel Meter Illumination may be switched Off at any time.
Fiber Optic Solid State Front Panel Illumination The Illumination of the Front Panel is accomplished by the combination of custom designed Fiber  Optic Light Diffusers and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). This provides even Front Panel Illumination, together with the extremely long life LEDs.

NEC A-10 amplifier

NEC A10
The revolutionary Compact Disc places severe demands ion all equipment in the audio chain, particularly the amplifier. In order to reproduce ultra wide dynamic range music from digital sources with maximum accuracy, an amplifier must be able to reproduce high-energy transients at low distortion levels. The NEC A-10 is just such an amplifier, because it was specifically designed for the digital age.
The deficiencies of conventional power supplies.
A conventional amplifier power supply uses a capacitor-input filter" in its rectifier circuit in order to smooth out the current going to each of the amplifier circuits. However, in a common rectifier, the current at the filter output is not as smooth and steady as it should be. Instead, it fluctuates. This occurs because as one filter charges, the other discharges in a seesaw fashion. Extra loud musical passages place a massive current drain on the power supply. If this occurs when the current at the output of the filter is on the decline, the power-supply impedance will increase, which, in turn, causes a clipped waveform at the amplifier's output. the result is distortion.

The NEC Reserve Power Supply - more power for more solid bass.
The NEC Reserve Power Supply utilizes a switching circuit which instantly charges one filter the moment the other filter stops charging and starts discharging. Composite filtered current is much smoother and steadler. This keeps power-supply impedance constantly low, so that clipped waveforms do not occur even under heavily loads. The sound you hear is essentially devoid of distortion at all power levels, with bass sounding rich and powerful even during the loudest passages.

Sophisticated power supply design.
The NEC A-10 has a sophisticated power supply design that uses independent supplies for the phono amps (used with moving coil and moving magnet cartridges), buffer, voltage amp, and current amp. Moreover, to supply the power output stages, the Reserve Power Supply provides a big power reservoir for solid performance. NEC's sophisticated power-supply design assures consistently low distortion and solid, powerful bass reproduction at all output levels - the reason why the A-10 sounds far more powerful than its power rating suggests.

High-gain head amp for moving-coil cartridges.
The NEC A-10 features a separate, high-quality head amp for moving-coil cartridges to extract all the delicacy and subtlety MC cardridges are renowned for. Its high equivalent input noise of -154 dBV (at 90 µV /10 Ω ) is a good indication of the high caliber of this pre-preamp.

Simple Design
To ensure that the signal path is as simple and straight as possible, no tone control system is included in the A-10. In instances where tone control is needed or desired, NEC recommends that the A-10 be matched with a separate, high-performance graphic equalizer.
