What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Axiom AX 1,5 loudspeakers

Inexpensive speakers tend to be studies in compromise, attemps to achieve smooth response with low-priced drivers and very simple crossover networks. Recently, however, the qaulity of models at under $500 a pair has dramatically increased, and the Axiom 1,5 is an example of minimizing both cost and compromise.

A 2-way system in a somewhat tall, narrow box, the Ax 1,5 is a very listenable reproducer. Response is +4/-2 dB from just over 500 - 16,000 Hz. Without the 7 dB bump at 400 Hz, response would be within these limits right down to 50 Hz, which is very respectable performance.

Top end response is elevated in a fashion similar to the AR but doesn't sound quite as etched. There are two reason for this seeming anomaly; first, though we reference our measurement to 1 kHz, this frequency is actually in a trough, so much of the midrange is balanced in level with the top  of peak, another dip being seen in the first overtone frequency range between 5 to 10 kHz. These characteristics, combined with the boost at 400 kHz, make for a quite natural balance, marred only by some midrange coloration.

In music test this manifested itself in the voice test as a mildly muffed quality and some edginess in female voice a result of the 4 kHz peak.

The surprise, however, in this speaker was the bass extension, down only 6 dB at 40 Hz and about 12 dB at 32 Hz. Measurements of exact cut-off points in bass response are always hard to make, especially in small speakers, because woofer harmonic distortion (or doubling) is high, and tends to be hard to separate from the fundamental. But there was appreciable pure bass below 40 Hz, so judicious placement, as well as reasonable levels, will provide excellent bass response from the 1,5. they should be mounted on stands about 20" high, but will not become boomy from corner placement because of the smooth bass curve.

Axiom 80 for Goodmans

The Goodmans Axiom 80 is a 10-inch, twin-cone, full range loudspeaker, whose performance, in a prpoer enclosure is as astounding as its unique design.

The most revolutionary advance embodied in the Axiom 80 is its achievement of free cone suspension - the theroretical ideal that permits the cone to move as a true piston at low frequencies, without restriction and without distortion.

Another direct result is that the fundamental resonance of the Axiom 80 is only 20 cycles - lower than that of any other commercially available loudspeaker.

The new ARU Friction Loaded Enclosure represents the perfect solution to the enclosure requirements of this superb reproducer. The axiom 80, mounted in a Model C-1800 ARU Enclosure, will reproduce true bass fundamentals down to 20 cycles - with no "hang-over" and without peaks above that frequency. Mid-range reproduction is clean and articulate and the :highs" smooth to 20,000 cycles. All of this is accomplished without the use of special "tweeters" and elaborate crossover networks.

Power handling capacity of the single Axiom 80/ARU system is entirely siutable for use in most home systems (8 -12 watts, continuous program material: 4 -6 watts , RMS sine wave). Where greater power handling is desired, two Axiom 80 loudspeakers may be used together in the Model B-2800 ARU Enclosure or four may be used in the Model A-4800.

No multi channel system, however elaborate or costly, cansurpass in performance these dual and quadruple Axiom 80/ARU systems.

ARU Enclosures are now available in easy-to-assemble kits, supplied complete with the necessary precut lumber, grille cloth, padding, glue, hardware and the all-important ARU Acoustical Resistance Unit.

Astounding performance from 2o to 20,000 cycles with a single channel speaker system.
