What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Harman/Kardon 930 receiver

Twin powered AM/FM and Stereo FM solid state receiver

The twin-powered amplifier section

The Harman/Kardon 930 is the first receiver in the world with two totally separate power supplies. Several manufacturers imply that their receivers incorporate two power supplies in reality, they employ a single supply with negative and positive voltages. The 930 also employs negative and positive voltages But, in addition, each chabnnel is completely isolated and has its own power transformer and electrolytics. Each channel has its own regulated voltages to permit that channel to respond to full RMS power output without being affected by the other channel. Thus, the 930 guaranteed flawless performance regardless of how much power the amplifier is called upon to deliver.

 

Power rating

Power rating is one of the most abused specifications in high fidelity. Despite the existance of standard procedures, it is often the manufacturer who determines the conditions under which power is rated. Harman/Kardon engineers believe that Continuous power, calculated from TMS voltage measurements, is the only meaningful way to rate power output.

But such a rating is still insufficient. Firstly, Continuous power output must be measured with both channels driven simultaneously at a specified distortion level. Secondly, the load impedance and power line voltage at which the measurement was taken must be given.

Finally, the measurements should be made across the entire frequency spectrum, rather than at 1,000 Hz. In short, the conditions under which the receiver is measured should be similar to those under which it will be used.

 

The preamplifier.

The 930's preamplifier delivers a signal so pure that its distortion cannot be measured with any degree of accuracy, even on the most sophisticated analysers. Only professional separate components can match this preamplifier section's hum noise and frequency response specifications.

One of the most important specifications of any high quality preamplifier is that of phono overload. The 930 specification is equal to or better than that of any receiver available. The 930 preamplifier can handle an input signal 50 times greater than that required to drive it to full output. This makes it virtually impossible to distort the preamplifier output.

What is more, absolute accuracy in playing back stereo records is assured as a result of the extremely tight tolerance of the RIAA playback curve.

 

The Tuner section

The tuner section of the 930 is a worthy companion to its superb amplifier. It employs high gain integrated circuits and matched ceramic filters. The result is hard limiting and excellent alternate channel selectivity. Hard limiting permits the detection of all FM stations - weak or strong - with equal clarity. Noise and distortion are completely eliminated. What's more, the excellent capture ratio and alternate channel selectivity mean that even weak stations will emerge free of interference from adjacent strong stations, impulse noise, and multipath interference. Precise alignment of the IF section is "frozen" into the circuitry and never requires realignment.

An FET front end, coupled with a four ganged tuning capacitor assures maximum sensitivity. The ultra-linear ratio detector delivers a precision composite signal to the multiplex section. Thus, even the highest frequencies are free of distortion.

The multiplex section employs balanced integrated circuitry which completely cancels SCA interference and high frequency phase distortion. It maintains maximum stereo separation throughout the entire audio range.

The FM muting circuit is of unique design which provides a smooth-as-velvet muting transition. In reality, it's simply go, no-go muting.

In short, the tuner section of the 930 assures unsurpassed sensitivity and selectivity and achieves a degree of excellence on a par with the receiver's amplifier.

Harman/Kardon hk680i receiver

The hk680i, with 60 watts per channel, is the first Harman Kardon receiver ever with the advanced technology of digital quartz-locked tuning. That means the tuner section automatically locks into the exact dead center of the broadcast signal every time. And stays there drift-free.

The 680i also features a memory system that allows you to store up to 6 AM and 6 FM stations, and recall them at the touch of a button. And tuning couldn't be easier. You can tune up or down manually by pressing one of the tuning buttons, or you can let the receiver scan automatically for you.

Harman/Kardon hk690i receiver

The hk690i - it's the ultimate receiver from Harman/Kardon.

The hk690i provides the combination of pure power, sonic excellence and features that the true audiophile demands.

With its High instantaneous Current Capability of 45 amps, the hk690i will develop far more power under peak demand conditions than its rated 60 Watts per channel. In fact, its dynamic behavior approaches the ideal; the transient power nearly doubles into 4 ohms and continues to increase dramatically into 2 ohms. This means that the hk690i gives you louder, clearer sound than any other 60 Watt receiver.

It has an Ultrawideband Frequency Response of 0,2 Hz to 150 kHz, as well as low negative feedback for extremely fast and accurate transient response. The result is a virtual elimination of TIM distortion.

The phono section has a unique RIAA equalization circuitry  which maintains a constant low level of negative feedback throughout the audio frequency range. The digital synthesized quartz-locked hk690i possesses a unique sample-and-hold MPX decoder to decrease high frequency switching noise while eliminating the need for much of the filtering normally required in FM processing.

The hk490i, with its high instantaneous current capability of 18 amps, will develop far more power under peak loads than its rated 30 watts per channel. In fact, the dynamic behavior approaches the ideal, in that the transient power nearly doubles into 4 Ω  and nearly quadruples into 2 ohms. That means the hk490i gives you louder, clearer, cleaner sound than any other 30 watt receiver.

With its ultrawideband frequency response of 0,2 to 150 kHz, the hk490i delivers very fast transient response, while virtually eliminating TIM distortion. The tuner section shuts down when the phono or aux buttons are pressed to eliminate digital switching noise or the possibility of bleed-through. There are also two tape monitors with copying ability and a subsonic filter.

The digitally synthesized quartz-locked tuner provides precise, drift-free reception. The display is DC driven,, to eliminate switching noise and distortion, and an auto FM switch automatically shifts the tuner into mono when the signal is too weak for stereo reception.

For convenience, stations may be locked into one of the 8 AM and * FM memory presets. In addition, the auto-mode switch scans up or down to the next station automatically.

By the way, since our equipment has always been designed to play original master tapes, we've been ready for digital audio and coming software advances - long before they've been ready for us.

The hk400XM is our top of the line cassette deck, and offers you the best of both worlds. High performance. And the sophisticated operating controls normally found only in professional equipment.

To start with, the 400XM is the most sophisticated design we ofer, with Dolby HX headroom extension, soft touch solenoid controls for fast, easy transport control, a two-motor transport for low wow and flutter (only 0,03%), and a 3-head configuration for simultaneous monitoring during the recording process.

Frequency Response is flat (±3 dB) for 15 to 20,000 Hz, with a Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 68 dB, using Metal tape and Dolby circuitry.

The 400XM's separate bias and equalization controls, tone generators and playback calibrators allow you to control all facets of the recording process for perfect results no matter which tape formulation you choose. LEDs indicate headroom safety to prevent saturation. We've even included a special shifting Dolby mark on the record level indicators. With conventional tape formulations, the Dolby mark remains in its normal position. But when metal tape is used, the Dolby mark automatically shifts upward to remind you of the new, higher setting you can use.

In addition to our Auto Program Search System, which lets you scan forward or backward automatically to sample each selection on the cassette, the 400XM also features an auto rewind/replay system. Engage the rewind system and when the tape ends the deck will automatically rewind the tape to its beginning. With both rewind and replay engaged, the deck will replay the tape automatically, too, rewinding and replaying each time the cassette ends.

With metal tape, the 200XM gives a frequency response from 15 to 19,000 Hz (±3 dB) and Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 65 dB . Wow and flutter is only 0,04%

The 200XM also incorporates features that give you both extra convenience and added control over your reording. Our Auto Search System lets you automatically skip or replay a selection.
