What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Electro-Voice SP12 loudspeaker

Incorporating all the design advantages of the famous E-V Radax coaxial principle, the E-V Models SP12 (and SP12B) full-range coaxial reproducers include the latest developments in the electro-acoustic art.. Bass response is extended affording, for the first time, pleasing musical balance without the masking effects previously experienced from increased high-frequency reproduction. Tailored to optimum listening requirements, these new developments insure smooth, even coverage of the entire listening area.

Eclusive, E-V engineered features include true coaxial mounting of both reproducing elements insuring smooth room coverage, augmented balanced bass response in conjunction with smooth extended high-frequency reproduction. The carefully tailored midrange characteristic provides realism and "presence" at usual sound levels, off setting ear insensitivity at low volume. The exclusive Radax design features a true acoustical crossover in which the mass of the bass cone and its voice-coil coupling compliance is no proportioned as to decouple the woofer above crossover. The Radax unit is free from phasing dips and displays less than 1,4% Total Harmonic Distortion above crossover. The edgewise wound aluminum voice coil design affords 18% more efficiency and consequent damping of transient distortion. An unusually heavy magnet structure is used.

Electro-Voice SP15 loudspeaker

Electro-Voice Models SP-15 (and SP15B) are massive, 15-inch reproducers of deluxe construction. They offer outstanding performance as full-range loudspeakers or as low-frequency drivers in mutiway systems. The EV Radax coaxial principle employed in these speakers offers as extended high-frequency response beyond the normal capability of ordinary 15-inch loudspeakers; and the combination of outstanding magnetic structure, edgewise wound voice coil, and viscous-damped cloth cone suspension makes possible an unusually low cone  resonance and extended low-frequency response.

The Model SP15 incorporates an exclusive E-V circuit which dramatically improves high-frequency response through control of speaker impedance at high frequencies. Action of this unique circuit and adjustment of the speaker's high-frequency response is determinate by the setting of an auxiliary brilliance control.

SP15 Brilliance Control

Since the Model  SP15 was introduced several years ago, a number of improvements have been made in its design. Among the most effective is the additions of a brilliance control to allow adjustment of the speaker's high-frequency response to individual taste and room acoustics. The best guide to setting this control properly is, of course, a familiarity with the sound of live music. Acoustically "hard" or "live" rooms will require a retraed setting of the brilliance control to compensate for the greater amount of high-frequency reflection. In "soft" or "dead" rooms with soft furniture, carpeting, and draperies a more advanced setting of the high-frequency control will normally be required.

RADAX Coaxial Speaker

The Radax extends both bass response and high-frequency reproduction in pleasing musical balance-insures improved coverage of the entire listening area-minimizes distortion.

This exclusive E-V development achieves highest efficiency with economy. Two separate coaxially-mounted cones operating from a single voice coil, divide the audible spectrum. Each is specifically designed to reproduce its portion of the audible range. The large cone "woofer" provides maximum bass reproduction; the small cone gives effective high-frequency propagation. True mechanical crossover permits smooth transition and reproduction of lows and highs in proper phase and balance, without phasing dips at the crossover frequency. With the Radax, you have a coaxial two-way system that assures clean, sparkling, wide-range reproduction.

Electro-Voice Sentry 100A loudspeakers

The Electro-Voice Sentry 100A monitor speaker system is the direct result of "human engineering" with the broadcast/recording studio engineer in mind. Our product engineers' non-nonsense design efforts have culminated in a system that speaks to the needs of professionals with specific requirements, high efficiency with extended low-frequency range, uniform frequency response and dispersion, all in a compact, no-frills package.

The Sentry 100A employs a Super-Dome tweeter capable of handling 25 watts of input power (most tweeter operate in the 5 watt range), while faithfully reproducing the program material with response out to 18,000 Hz and uniform dispersion (120° at 5,000 Hz ). No longer will accidental high-frequency blasts from tape head contact in rewind / fast-forward mode result in a curl of smoke where a tweeter used to be. The low-frequency section is an 8" direct radiator woofer installed in an optimally vented enclosure with fourth-order Butterworth tuning. The optimally vented design is responsible for the unusual combination of small size, extended bass response, and high efficiency. Such performance is simply not available in other enclosure of similar size.

The Sentry 100A is housed in a utility cabinet wrapped in a special, scratch-resistant, mattle black vinyl. The cabinet size is intentionally designed for rack mounting. The steel-reinforced grille is covered with a custom grey cloth. This provides maximum protection, acoustic transparency and pleasing esthetic quality.

Loudspeaker response Due To The Acoustical Environment

Several factors must be considered when determining the overall response of a speaker system in any listening environment. Physical characteristics of the room itself, and placement of speakers and listener can have considerable effect on SPL capability, perceived and/or measured frequency response, and stereo imaging.

As pointed out in several texts on room acoustics, as the source-listener distance increases, the sound pressure level (SPL) decreases, in the direct field as a steady rate (inverse square law; 6 dB drop for every doubling of distance) until a certain distance is reached. This point is often called the critical distance . Beyond this point, the SPL approaches a constant value (the reverberation field). The listening position in the sound field determines the amount of acoustic power output of the speaker system needed to produce a certain sound pressure level at the engineer's ears. Generally speaking, the amount of power output needed from the speaker/amplifier system decreases as the room becomes smaller and/or more reverberant (shorter critical distance). In most cases, the audio engineer will be working well within the direct field. If indeed this is the case, the amplifier power requirement is entirely dependent on the loss in SPL due to inverse square law.

Th elow frequency response of the overall system can be adversely affected by poor placement of the monitor speakers themselves. The Sentry 100A was designed for 1/4 to 1/2 space use. This requires that the speaker system be mounted as close as possible to floor/ceiling and/or wall surfaces. Placement in loose cavities or resonant mountings can also seriously degrade the overall response.

Electro-Voice LF-215 speakers

The Electro-Voice Model LF215 is a high-performance low-frequency speaker system designed for applications where portability is important. The LF215 features two EVM15L speakers connected in parallel and mounted in a 6,5 cubic feet enclosure equipped with heavy-duty casters. The enclosure is constructed of black vinyl covered 3/4-inch plywood, with protective extruded aluminum trim and recessed handles. The  rugged construction of the LF215 makes it ideal for road use.

The LF215 is designed to work well with the Electro-Voice HR series horns and DH series drivers for use in large music stage systems where a portable system is desired. The Electro-Voice XEQ-1 electronic crossover is also an ideal companion to this product.

Four rubber feet are provided on one side of the enclosure so that the LF215 may be laid on its side for stacking. Stacking will approximately halve the rated coverage angle (beamwidth) and increase the on-axis output by 6 dB. 3 dB comes because two paralleled LF215's will draw twice the power from the usual solid state amplifier. The other 3 dB comes from the reduced coverage angle.

Electro-Voice Interface D loudspeakers

The Interface D combines the best qualities of the finest speakers in the world without their weaknesses. The result is a new standard of accuracy, efficiency and overall performance.

There are speakers with exceptional midrange definition. And speakers with deep bass or exceptional stereo imaging.

Really of 28 Hz

The Interface D's bass response is virtually unprecedented. Its 3-dB-down point is 28 Hz. And unlike some speakers which have limited output at low frequencies, the Interface D can produce an incredible 106 dB long-term sound pressure level at 28 Hz.

The bass is also smooth. This is due in large part to placing the 12" woofer in a downward-firing position. This couples it to the floor and wall which smooths the response, by eliminating boundary effects caused by front mounting, and efficiency is increased by 3 dB.

A new kind of midrange

The efficiency and high output ability of the woofer made almost impossible demands of the midrange. In fact, it would have been impossible to design a midrange driver of reasonable size, high efficiency, high output and low crossover point using conventional speaker technology. So we designed our midrange using the same optimally vented technology we pioneered for woofers.

This optimally vented midrange uses exactly the same 16-pound magnetic structure as the woofer. So it can deliver long term sound pressure levels of up to 115 dB and peaks up to 125 dB. At the same time, it's small 6-1/2" cone provides excellent dispersion over its entire frequency range.

Without vented technology, a small cone couldn't produce high sound pressure levels at low frequencies - it just couldn't move enough air. But the self-contained, vented enclosure solves that problem. The enclosure and vent size are critically selected so at low frequencies, a small movement of the cone produces a large movement of the air in the vent. Over the lowest itself provides most of the system's output.

The exceptionally low crossover (350 Hz) made possible by the optimally vented midrange has an important audible result. There is no crossover in the most critical part of the vocal range. At last you'll hear an almost unbelievable clarity and definition. It's the "sweetness" many audiophiles associate with electrostatic speakers, but without their inherent weaknesses.

The tweeter without "horn sound"

This tweeter has natural, accurate sound and has significant advantages over conventional cone and dome drivers.

It is 10 dB more efficient than any cone or dome could possibly be. And it can play louder than conventional tweeters. This additional output is extremely important in contemporary music. At realistic volume, synthesizers and closemiked brass or percussion make severe demands of a tweeter. Thanks to its horn tweeter, the Interface D reproduces that kind of music accurately.

The third advantage of our horn tweeter is equally important-unusually uniform and well-controlled horizontal dispersion over its entire frequency range. The dispersion of all cone and dome drivers varies with frequency. At low frequencies, dispersion often exceeds 180 degree which causes severe diffraction from the edges of the cabinet. This result in cancellation effects and less uniform total acoustic power output. But a higher frequencies, conventional tweeters have much narrover dispersion. These constantly changing dispersion angles result in a vague, blurred stereo image.

But the Interface D's dispersion is tightly controlled by the 120 degree angle of the horn.  Even at low treble frequencies, dispersion remains well under 180 degree, eliminating diffraction effects. And even above 16,000 Hz dispersion is better than 110 degree.

Electro-Voice T35B Driver

 Super Sonax Very-High-Frequency Driver

The human ear delights in the variety of sounds resulting from the widest range reproduction. This wide range response delivers also the subjective illusion of reality. Extended high-frequency response in the last audible octaves is made necessary still more in the accomplishment of musical balance with the augmented bass range of present speaker systems of the folded corner horn and phase loaded type. Here fundamentals of the first audible octave require flat response in the high range to the limit of audibility, or aesthetic appreciation of the source material suffers from unconscious listener fatigue caused by the imbalance.

These needs have resulted in intensive research by Electro-Voice physicists and engineers to the end that new principles and new techniques have evolved a superior series of VHF drivers which have overcome range and sensitivity limitations.

The improved T35B, and T35 Super-Sonax, very-high frequency drivers are designed to complement all Electro-Voice speaker systems, and systems of alternative manufacture, when smooth, efficient, extended response is desired past 3500 cps. These drivers have specialized integral horns of the diffraction type which afford wide dispersion. This dispersion characteristic is especially valuable in stereo or binaural reproduction, where even distribution of sound energy throughout the listening area is a requisite to preserve the proper aural horopter.

The Hoodwin Diffraction Horn

All Electro-Voice drivers employ diffraction horns as the recommended method of achieving the best dispersion. In stereo work especially, a 3 dB concentration of sound in one portion  of the room is sufficient to cause apparent displacement of the subject, with resultant distortion of the "solid" or stereo effect.. This changes the aural perspective so necessary to the preservation of the illusion of reality, and smooth dispersion insures duplication of the original sound source depth and width. The spatial relationship of the original sound source to the axis of the two ears is termed the aural horopter, and an even sound distribution, coupled with balancing the levels of both right and left speakers is insured through the diffraction principle.

Voice Coil Assembly

By using a diaphragm assembly of practically indestructible phenolic-impregnated linen, radial splitting, buzzing and modular breakup are eliminated. Because reproduction of the extreme high frequencies is mass-controlled, the self-supporting voice coil has no heavy coil form and is therefore practically weightless, providing extended high-frequency response.

Electro-Voice T350 VHF Driver

T350 Deluxe VHF Compression Driver

Designed to complement Electro-Voice deluxe high fidelity drivers, the T350 VHF driver combines smooth, extended high-frequency response with efficient performance. An integral diffraction horn couples the diaphragm to the air and assures the widest possible sound dispersion. This uniform distribution of sound energy is especially important in stereo reproduction to allow the largest possible listening area.

Exclusive Sonophase throat design is incorporated in the T350 VHF driver. Response is flat up to 4 or 5 kHz, after which destructive interference results from inability of the diaphragm to act as a piston. Increasingly higher frequencies cause the phase of sound produced at the diapragm periphery to shift with respect to sound produced by the diaphragm center-due to diaphragm deformation . In the Sonophase design, sound from the central portion of the diaphragm is delayed by the longer path length, restoring proper phase relationship and level as the frequency increases. The importance of the Sonophase throat design is paramount above 12 kHz, where sound must be taken from the center of the diaphragm and the periphery simultaneously; in this design this is accomplished without destructive interference or cancelation within the sound chamber. At lower frequencies where the diaphragm acts as a piston, and no phase shift is required in the path configuration, the longer central path length does not appreciably change the phase due to the longer wave lengths involved.

The single-wound self-supporting voice coil is epoxy-bonded to a phenolic impregnated diapragm. This extremely rugged assembly will withstand high power levels, and yet is light enough to follow precisely the complex VHF wave forms.

Electro-Voice Dominator speakers

The Dominator is a three-way, all-horn stage speaker system. Designed for the stage or disco, where the extremely high efficiency of a horn system is desirable, the Dominator offers excellent performance in a small package without the "honky" traditional sound of a horn system.

The Dominator employs an EVM15L feeding a folded horn for the low end. The heart of the Dominator is a newly designed midrange horn which was carefully designed to provide exceptionally wide horizontal dispersion. The Electro-Voice 1829 is coupled to the new horn to achieve a fantastic sound for the midrange. The ST350A tweeter with its smooth response and 120 ° horizontal dispersion provides the high end for the Dominator system.

For those applications that require it, the Dominator is bi-ampable. The simple interchange of two 9-pin plugs on the rear connector panel converts the Dominator for use with a 600 Hz to 800 Hz active low-level crossover. The Electro-Voice XEQ-1 crossover makes a good companion to the Dominator for this purpose.

The exterior of the Dominator enclosure is 5/8" black-vinyl-covered plywood. Rubber feet and carrying handles are provided along with protective aluminum trim covering all edges, making the Dominator ready for the road.

Electro-Voice Interface C speakers

E-V Interface:C Series II is the fulfillment of our six-year association with optimally vented speakers based on the theories of A. N. Thiele - speaker designs first introduced by Electro-Voice in 1973. the Interface:C offers you a unique combination of high efficiency and high power capacity - the only way to accurately reproduce the 120 = 120 dB peak sound pressure levels found in some types of live music.
The Super Dome tweeter, an E-V exclusive, and the VMR vented midrange driver, the first to apply optimally vented design to mid frequencies, ensure your music is reproduced without the coloration normally found in other high-efficiency drivers. An honest 30 Hz low end totally eliminates the need for expensive subwoofer assemblies.

Electro Voice 12 TRXB

 Integrated 3-way speaker Features:
Massive die-cast frame
Viscous damped cloth suspension
Ceramic magnet
Integral Sonophase VHF driver

Incorporating  all the design advantages of the famous Electro-Voice Radex Caaxial principle, the Electro-Voice Model 12 TRXB integrated 3-way loudspeaker includes, also, the latest developments in the reproduction of the highest audible frequencies through the use of an integral Super Sonax VHF driver.
The  12 TRXB emplous the Model T35B VHF driver base response is excellent, affording pleasing musical balance without the masking effects previously experienced from extended high frequency reproduction.
The 12 TRXB loudspeaker is designed to meet optimum listening requirements; latest developments incorporated insure even, smooth coverage of the entire listening area. The engineered features of the Electro-Voice integrated 3-way speaker system include true oncentric mounting of all reproducing elements; augmented balanced bass response in conjunction with smooth, extended high frequency reproduction, carefully tailored mid-range characteristic to provide realism and a considerable degree of "presence" at usual sound levels. The 12 TRXB incorporates in the high frequency section the Sonophase throat design.
The importance of the Sonophase throat design is paramount above 12 kc, where sound must b taken from the center of the diaphragm and the outer periphery simultaneously.
At lower frequencies, where the diaphragm is a piston, and no phase shift is required in the path configuration, the longer central path length does not appreciably change the phase due to the longer wave lengths involved. Further benefits are affored in the high frequency section of the Electro-Voice integrated 3-way speaker systems by the incorporation of Electro-Voice developed diffraction horns as the method of achieving the best dispersion. In stereophonic use especially, a 3 dB concentration of sound in one portionof the subject, with the resultant distortion of the solid or stereo effect. An adjustable "brilliance" control is incorporated to allow matching of response to room acoustic, compensating for high frequency absorptive efects of heavy drapery and soft frnishhings; crossover network with full 12 dB per octave slope minimizes distortion; edgewise-wound aluminum voice coil design affords 18% more efficiency and consequent damping of transient distortion.
