What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

NAD 710 receiver

NAD 710
The NAD 710 receiver combined into one chassis the Model 310 amplifier and 412 tuner. Receivers are often regarded as convenience products only; as a consequence most budget receivers may have many features but poor amplifier and tuner performance. NAD has chosen the other route; trim off all the "fat" and instaed optimise the design and components directly related to performance. The NAD 710 exemplifies this; no loudness controls, mono buttons, phono section, remote control, etc.; just those controls needed for day to day operation. The biggest change to conventional amplifier design is to be found internally, however, courtesy of the Super Simple circuit topology.

The super simple concept - the goal of the NAD engineers was to design a circuit which would an outstanding performance and supreme reliability - yet at a lower cost than using conventional technology. This has resulted in a totally new circuit topology, first used in the Model 310, appropriately named "Super Simple".
The highly unusual arrangement of putput devices and driver stages increases both the current capability and efficiency of the power amplifier. Many amplifiers specified at three times the power will not be able to match the Model 710's 20 Amps peak Current capability. Another benefit of the Super Simple concept is that on average it requires 50% less components compared to a conventional design of similar specification.

The high level of performance is further achieved by using discrete circuitry for the entire amplifier section. The generous power supply employs a Holmgren toroidal transformer and separate voltage rails for the Left and Right channels. Loudspeakers with complex loads (such as low impedances) can be driven with ease.
The tuner section can store up to 24 stations (12 AM; 12 FM). These are stored in a non volatile memory which allows the preset stations to remain in memory even if the unit is unplugged from the mains supply. Auto-Search and manual tuning is provided for both FM and AM. Unlike most other receivers and tuners, the Model 710 tunes in 25 kHz increments which makes for precise tuning on crowded FM bands.

NAD 5220 CD player

NAD's Compact Disc players are known for fine sound, superior tracking, powerful error correction, and reliable construction. But the greatest differecnce between NAD players and other is NAD's uniquely simple and logical approach to design.
The NAD 5220  CD player is securely in this no-frills, high-performance, best buy tradition. They were created for people whose primary interesst is music, not gadgets. The theme of simplicity extends to their analog output circuits as well; with only a handful of electronic components in the signal path, their sound is particularly pure and clean.
This player is eqquipped withh full-disc automatic repeat and programmable memory playback of up to sixteen selections in any order. And both players include new features of significant value to users. The economical NAD 5220 adds a Timer Pay feature that autimatically plays a disc when the power is switched on. So, by plugging the player's AC power cord  into a clock timer, you can provide your own choice of wake up music in the morning instead of depending on a clock radio.
NAD 5220 employ a solid metal chassis for maximum stability, precise alignment, and long-term reliability. The metal chassis provides electrical shielding to reduce leakage of interference from the digital circuits into your phono preamp or FM tuner. The playback mechanism floats on springs within, minimizing the transmission of vibration to the spinning disc, ensuring secure tracking even in the presence of the powerful vibrations produced by your loudspeakers.

The output circuit in this player exemplifies the "less is better" approach, with only a handful of electronic components in the signal path. The elegantly simple analog stage has only one active circuit in each channel; a high-speed filter that provides de-emphasis and removes unwanted ultrasonic noise. To ensure that this active filter circuit cannot be overdriven into transient distortion, the analog signal is pre-smoothed by a passive multipole filter that is connected directly to the digital de-multi-plexer. High-quality polypropylene capacitors are used at sonically critical points in the circuit, e.g., in the treble de-emphasis network.

Dolby HX-Pro and DYNEQ:
Dyneq varies the record equalization to prevent over saturatio when strong high frequency transients occur. HX PRO varies the bias supplied to the bias supplied to the tape during recording to maintain optimum high frequency at all times, thus making a much more accurate reproduction of your source. Note:  HX-pro and DYNEQ are compatible for playback with all cassette decks, including car decks.
Car Circuit:
Boosts quiet passages in the music without altering the loud passages, making a more practical tape for car or portable players. It also adds equalization for the car environment.
Play Trim:
Developed by Dolby laboratories with NAD, Play Trim compensates for high frequency loss before Dolby NR, restoring highs withput increasing noise. Example: Take an old tape with dulled highs and turn the Play Trim knob and note the restored highs.

NAD 5420

 Compact Disc Player
Balanced MASH One-Bit High Resolution Digital to Analogue Converter:
With CD players utilizing MASH or other one bit technologies, our engineers have found that what really makes the difference in their performance is the care taken in power supply design,, PCB layout, grouding, and selection of analog circuit components
Circuit Simplicity:
Many CD players are "over-designed" with unnecessary stages of analog circuitry that sacrifice transparency and subtle detail. NAD players have just three wide-band analog circuits and only one coupling capacitor in the signal path (bypassed by a low loss film capacitor), thus preserving the emotional detail of the original performance.

NAD 7020i

7020i Stereo Receiver Features:
Conservatively rated at 20 W/channel continuous power, with +3 dB of IHF Dynamic Headroom.
Dynamic power exceeds 40 W/channel at 8 or 4 ohms, 50 W/ channel at 2 ohms.
High-current output stage delivers peak currents up to 15 amperes, for precise control of voice-coilmotion with speaker impedances as low as 2 ohms.
Gold-plated phono input jacks for a long life of corrosion-free contact in this sensitive low level signal path.
Heavy duty speaker binding-post connections provide a secure, low resistance connection for allspeaker wires and banana plugs.
Flexibility: the 7020i's pre and power amplifier are connected by external jumpers which are removable to allow for greater flexibility to upgrade your system.
Sensitive precise digital tuning with three stages of I.F. filtering for outstanding freedom from noise and interference

The modest cost and simple controls of the NAD 7020i Stereo Receiver make it an ideal choice for theperson who wants fine musical reproduction without becoming involved in the technicalities of hi-fi. NAD's approach to audio design can be characterised in one phrase: "high-value engineering".  When you choose an NAD receiver, you are investing in quality behind the front panel . innovative circuit design, selected parts, high-current transistors, exacting quality control, and solid construction for consistent performance and long-term reliability. The rated "continuous" power of a receiver tells you how well it plays sine-wave test tones; but real musical waveforms are much more complex and dynamic.  The NAD 7020i is conservatively rated at 20 watts per channel for test tones, but its high-voltage design produces extra power for rapidly changing waveforms - over 40 watts per channel of dynamic power for the exciting peaks and climaxes in music (especially in digital Compact Discs). Many FM receivers look good on paper; but in side-by-side comparisons, NAD receivers often pull  inweak or difficult stations with audibly better freedom from noise and interference, thanks to sensitive dual-gate MOSFET amplification and sophisticated multi-stage I.F. filtering

Circuit Features High-Current Output Stage
NAD was the first manufacturer to emphasise the importance of output current capacity. The 7020i candeliver peak currents as high as 15 amperes. The "20-watt" 7020i employs the same high-speed output transistors that other manufacturers use in their "50-watt" receivers.
Impedance Selector
NAD's unique Speaker Impedance selector and high-current output stage deliver maximum power to loudspeakers of any impedance - high or low, simple or complex. The 7020i will even drive a 2 Ω impedance safely, without current-limiting or distortion.
Soft Clipping™
When the 7020i is overdriven beyond its power capacity, the exclusive NAD Soft Clipping™ circuit gently limits the waveform voltage so that the output transistors are never driven into saturation, i.e. into"hard clipping". Thus the receiver can safely be over driven substantially beyond its rated power on peaks, yet still continue to sound smooth and musical.
Digital-ready Dynamic Range
The 7020i's over-load- proof inputs for video, tape and digital Compact Disc  can accommodate a dynamic range greater than 100 dB. Every circuit in the receiver, including its low-impedance tone-control stage, is designed to minimise background noise  and preserve the clarity of your recordings.

Phono Preamplifier
Unlike many receivers that employ low-cost integrated-circuit (IC) chips for the phono stage, the NAD 7020i employs a refined discrete-transistor phono preamplifier circuit whose signal-to-noise ratio is sogood (75 dB with the phono cartridge connected) that you won't hear any preamp hiss, even when playing the quietest recordings.
Musically Useful Tone Controls
Correctly designed tone controls can be a genuinely helpful aid to enjoyable music listening. In the NAD 7020i, the bass and treble controls do what their names imply: they allow you to vary the strength ofthe bass and the treble. But at moderate boost/cut settings the important midrange from 300 to 1500 Hz remains essentially flat.
Sensitive Digital Tuning
The 7020i employs precise frequency-synthesis digital tuning; each station is tuned with crystal-controlled accuracy. A dual-gate MOSFET FM circuit pulls in weak stations well but resists overloading on strong signals, Multi-stage I.F. filtering provides an optimum combination of sharp selectivity (to separate closely-spaced stations) and minimum distortion of the stereo signal.
Quiet AM tuning
The AM section is based on an IC that was especially developed for use in digital tuners, It is surprisingly sensitive, unusually resistant to noise, and provides a more extended high-frequency range than in mostother AM tuning circuits.

NAD 402 Tuner

The Model 402 embodies NAD's conviction that convenience, flexibility, and ease of use can be achieved with absolutely no compromise in sound quality. The 402 has AM and FM; preset distortion-free tuning for 60 radio stations

60 Presets 30 AM and 30  FM radio stations
NAD-Link Connectors allow control to and from other units
Blend facility to reduce noise at low signal strengths
75 Ω coax antenna connector
Lock facility to automatically tune precisely onto a station
Three separate modes of tuning with 25 kHz accuracy

Flexible Tuning
The 402 has three convenient tuning modes:
Search: Scans rapidly up or down in frequency, stopping automatically at the next strong station.
Preset: Up to 30 FM and 30 AM station frequencies can be stored in memory and instantly recalled. The "non-volatile" memory needs no battery or other power; frequencies are retained during power outages, even if you unplug the receiver for weeks at a time.
Tune: Dual-resolution tuning lets you scan rapidly through the broadcast band (with constant pressure on an up/down tuning button), or fine-tune in small 0,025 MHz steps by tapping on the buttons. This lets you optimise the reception of a weak station adjacent to a strong one.

Sensitive Digital Tuning
Precise digital frequency-synthesis circuits guarantee that each station is tuned with crystal-controlled accuracy. A dual-gate MOSFET FM circuit pulls in weak stations clearly but resists overloading on strong signals. A balanced quadrature detector provides consistently low distortion, even with over-modulated broadcasts. The composite stereo signal is phase-compensated to guarantee wide stereo separation at all frequencies, not just in the midrange.

Sharp selectivity, low noise
Linear-phase ceramic filters in the I.F. circuit provide an ideal combination of sharp selectivity and minimum distortion. Low-loss design gives the optimum signal level to the PLL MPX decoder, yielding a signal-to-noise ratio of nearly 75 dB with strong signals. So with local stations the ultimate stereo guieting is limited not by the receiver but the station itself.

NAD 4020A Tuner

The NAD 4020A is a rationally designed and built, at moderate price,  AM/FM tuner, whose performance in most locations and with most broadcasts is audibly identical to that of many more expensive  and elaborate tuners. The 4020's quality of sound is limited only by the quality of the transmitted broadcast.
Recent dramatic advances in FM tuner circuitry, particularly in the development of inexpensive but high-performance "building block" circuit modules, have been incorporated in the 4020A to provide excellent sound at reasonable price.

Such crucial design parameters as sensitivity, low distortion and wide stereo separation have been given priority over the inclusion of costly superfluous features and esoteric circuitry whose benefits are totally inaudible except in rxtreme reception conditions. But no compromises whatsoever have been made in those performance areas which relate directly to the 4020's listening quality in normal and even somewhat difficult reception locations.
High Sensitivity
The "front end" tuning circuit, for example, employs a Junction FET amplifier, for an optimum combination of sensitivity to weak signals and resistance to cross - modulation from strong signals. The intermediate frequency (I.F.) amplifier, a high-gain IC, provides excellent limiting (static suppression), very good AM rejection (suppression of multipath interference), and smooth muting of interstation noise.
Low Distortion
While budget-price tuners commonly contain one or two ceramic I.F. filters, the NAD 4020A employs a total of three. Their sharp selectivity minimises interference from adjacent stations on the increasingly crowded FM dial, and their linear-phase respponse contributes to minimum distortion of stereo broadcasts. Multiplex stereo decoding is performed by the latest phase-locked loop (PLL) IC. In addition to low noise and wide stereo separation, the PLL decoder yields the lowest distortion in stereo reception - in particular, minimum inter-modulation between high audio frequencies and the 19 kHz stereo pilot tone.
Wide Stereo Separation
It is important to maintain wide stereo separation at low and high frequencies as well as the commonly specified 1 kHz midrange point. In the 4020A phase shift of the composite signal is minimised in order to preserve full low-frequency separation, and a special NAD phase-compensated crosstalk cancellation circuit increases high-frequency separation and minimises any residual distortion.
Instead of a costly and fragile moving-coil tuning meter the 4020A has a set of three LED indicator lights which form a remarkably simple and accurate meter. Either of two amber LEDs illuminates when the 4020A is mistuned to either side of a station frequency, and a green LED illuminates when the station is optimally tuned for minimum distortion 9within 0,025 MHz). The brightness of the green tuning LED indicates the signal strength, when it is dim the station is too weak for optimum reception.

For the music lover seeking uncompromised performance for a modest investment, the NAD 4020A is the logical choice. There are more costly tuners available, some of which have more impressive specifications,, but very few sound better in everyday use.
