What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Hitachi HS-1 M loudspeakers

Miniature Speaker System

If you're looking for big, high-quality sound but don't have the space to accommodate a big system, the HS-1M Miniature Speaker System is sure to satisfy you.

Just 185 mm high (not much more than a large book), these speakers can be placed almost anywhere - and they're portable too.

Optional mounting brackets permit free-angle installation on walls, ceilings, on the new window shelf of your car for maximum space savings.

Maximum power handling capacity is is a mammoth 80 watts, and output sound pressure level is an impressive 85 dB. So even if you own a large power amplifier, there's no worry of damaging or distorting these speakers. They'll give you plenty of output from small amps as well.

Woofer

The HS-1M woofer is 4-inch cone-types employing carefully selected cone paper for maximum fidelity and strength. Remarkably smooth reproduction from powerful bas to rich midrange is assured thanks to the incorporation of special Hitachi Actuators, special low-distortion magnetic circuits in which the center pole is covered with a cooper short cap. This unique feature minimizes high-frequency distortion due to interaction between the voice coil and magnetic circuit, permitting only the purest of sounds to come through.

High power handling capacity is realized through the use of a thermo setting adhesive with superior thermal properties for the voice coil and bobbin.

Tweeter

Titanium-dome, an extremely light, but durable, metalic element is used for the HS-1M tweeter dome, providing uniform quality and low distortion. The small size of dome itself permits wide frequency response and excellent dispersion.

Accurate spatial imaging and resolution in the HS-1M is amazing for their size. This is due to careful design , and to the selection of 2,700 Hz for the crossover frequency.

Solid Diecast Aluminum Cabinet

The HS-1M enclosures are precision-processed diecast aluminum alloy. This virtually eliminates the possibility of box resonance, buzzes and rattles or air leaks. You get dynamic, resonant-free reproduction over the entire audible spectrum.

Hitachi HT-61S turntable

Full-Automatic Direct-Drive Turntable

Fully automatic operation with all controls on the front panel provides outstanding convenience in each model; the HT-61S (HT-R10) gives you a few extras. In short, these turntables leave nothing to be desired. This TH-R10 can be used with the RM-1000 remote control center for extra convenience, too.

Automatic disc Size/Speed Selection

The HT-61S/R10 uses a light beam to sense the size of the record on the platter and automatically set the lead-in for either 30-cm or 17-cm, so the stylus will lower to exactly the right place. At the same time, platter speed is automatically set to the corresponding speed; 33-⅓ or 45 rpm. This makes operation surer and more convenient, putting the HT-61S/R10 another step above ordinary turntables.

All Controls Up Front

All Control functions are located on top of the turntable's front panel. They are accessible when the dust cover is down, preventing the possibility of jarring the tonearm during play. And thanks to the use of IC logic circuitry, it only takes a feather touch to operate all controls.

Hitachi HT-60S turntable

Full-Automatic Direct-Drive Turntable with Quartz Lock,

Unitorque Motor, Gimbal-Suspension Straight Tonearm

and Photo Sensor Arm Return System

This model feature a sleek, clean design, convenient operation, and the superior quality and reliability that advanced Hitachi technology makes possible. They combine the proven excellence of Hitachi's Unitorque motor and quartz-lock PLL servo system with the latest improvements in tonearm design from the Hitachi Audio R&D labs; gimbal-suspension straight tonearm with photo-sensor return system. Fully automatic operation with all controls on the front panel provides outstanding convenience in each model; the HT-61S (HT-R10) gives you a few extras. In short, these turntables leave nothing to be desired. This TH-R10 can be used with the RM-1000 remote control center for extra convenience, too.

Unitorque - A Unique Motor

The HT-60S is direct-drive turntables - the  platter is driven directly by the motor. Overall performance, then, is directly dependent on motor performance. Other turntables use either multi-pole DC motors or AC motors, which have various disadvantages. AC motors are extremely inefficient and subject to vibrations; DC motors suffer from uneven torque - they rotate in a series of "steps" or "puls", which must be smoothed out by adding more poles/slots or extra servo circuitry - complicated, unreliable, costly measures which are only partially effective.

The Unitorque motor prevents these problems from occurring at all. It is a brushless, slotless, coreless motor with perfectly smooth, even torque (hence the name, Uni-Torque) its unique design employs two star-shaped flat coils positioned in such a way that their independent torques combine to produce constantly even torque throughout each rotation. A 240-pole magnetic rotor provides added stability. The Unitorque motor thus features precision, reliability and efficiency superior to other types of motors.

Quartz Lock Plus High Torque Equals Speed Accuracy

Complementing the Unitorque motor is a quartz-lock PLL (Phase-Locked-Loop) servo system. While conventional servo systems must rely on a reference voltage (subject to fluctuation due to variations in supply and temperature), these two models use a quartz crystal oscillator, whose pulses never vary in the slightest degree. They are compared to pulses directly from the motor so even infinitesimal speed variations can be detected and corrected. And thanks to the high torque of the Unitorque motor, this process occurs much faster than in conventional systems. It all adds up to outstanding speed accuracy; wow and flutter is an extremely low (0,025%). As an added touch, a quartz lock indicator is provided to inform you when the turntable has reached operating speed and the quartz PLL circuit has locked in.

Gimbal-Suspension Straight Tonearm

The HT-60S employ Hitachi's new straight-line tonearm design, developed through an extensive testing process. Its low mass characteristics provide superior tracking capabilities, and bring out all the performance possibilities of high compliance cartridges. And its highly symmetrical, precise construction eliminates much of the resonance that conventional cartridges suffer from. The tonearm is mounted on a gimbal support system. This gimbal suspension allows free movement in both vertical and horizontal directions, for optimum balance during tracking. This means lighter, more sensitive tracking for better reproduction quality with less stylus and record wear. An easy one-touch anti-skating control further increases tracking accuracy by counteracting the force which pulls the tonearm toward the center of the record.

Photo-Sensor Arm Return System

This Hitachi systems is clearly superior to conventional arm return methods. Ordinarily, auto-cut and auto-return are triggered by mechanical contacts or linkages connected to the base of the tonearm. They cause a certain amount of drag, inhibiting tonearm movement sufficiently to produce distortion. In addition, they are subject to wear and mechanical failure,

The photo-sensor system is much more sophisticated. The only thing that touches the tonearm assembly is a light beam. It passes from an LED to a photo-sensitive cell. When the arm, reaches the end of the record, a thin plate attached to the base cuts the light beam. This change in light intensity causes the cell to activate a switching circuit, which in turn activates a small arm-drive motor. This entire system is located far away from the main drive mechanism, so it does not affect reproduction quality at all. Phot-sensor arm return - an elegant innovation that improves performance and reliability.

Full Automatic Convenience

All tonearm movements are automatically controlled, and driven by a separate DC motor. Pushing the start button initiates arm movement to the correct position over the record and then lowers the arm. This button can also be used to interrupt play (cut). At the end of the record, as described above, the photo-sensor system returns the arm, then shuts off the motor. A repeat function is also included to let you hear a record more than once without having to touch the unit.

Controls are provided for tuning volume, balance, ganged bass, ganged treble, speaker selection, and input selection/FM muting. There are switched for loudness compensation, tape monitor, and meter mode/subsonic filter.
The FM antenna input is 75/300 ohms. An internal antenna and external connection are provided for AM. There is one unswitched AC outlet.
Tuner performance
FM Tuner. Full limiting was attained with 2,8 µV. The monophonic high fidelity sensitivity (60 dB quieting) measured 8 µV. The stereo high fidelity sensitivity (55 dB quieting) was 90 µV. Full mute release was attained with 6 µV. At standard test level the stereo frequency response measured +0,2/-1,5 dB from 40 to 15,000 Hz, down 2,2 dB at 30 Hz . Monophonic distortion measured 0,2% Total Harmonic Distortion, stereo distortion was 0,5% Total Harmonic Distortion. The signal to noise ratio measured 67 dB. Stereo separation was 36 dB. Selectivity was very good. The 19 kHz FM pilot leakthrough is some what higher than average. Make certain the MPX filter on a Dolby recorder is switched in when recording from FM. On most recorders the MPX filter is automatically applied with the Dolby.
AM tuner. Background noise was higher than average.
Amplifier peformance. The power output per channel at the clipping level with both chaannels driven 20 to 20,000 Hz into 8 ohms measured 27 watts RMS. The frequency response at 27 watts/8 ohms measured +0 dB -3 dB from 20 to 20,000 Hz at a distortion no higher than 0,06% Total Harmonic Distortion at any frequency. The subsonic filter produced 2,5 dB attenuation at 20 Hz. The tone control range measured =11/-12 dB at 50 Hz ; ±8 dB at 10,000 Hz. The magnetic input hum and noise was -69 dB; stero separation was into the noise level.
Meters
The LED output power indicators, because of the broad range between values, indicate approximate power. They serve as a reference rather than as precise value. Their frequency response is essentially "flat". When used as tuning meters the right indicator functions as light-bar )or bar-graph) signal strength meter, while the center LED in the left indicator serves to indicate proper tuning-it snaps on when an FM station is tuned properly; essentially, the LED substitutes for a center-channel tuning meter.

The new protection circuit of Hitachi
Muting Cuircuit
This set contains the muting circuit which cuts off the relay approx. 3,5 seconds after the power switch is turned on to eliminate the click sound generated by power switch operation.
ASO (Area of Safety Operation) detection circuit (output transistor protection)
This circuit functions to protect the transistors (Q711-Q714) from damage.
Especially when the voltage (Vce) between C - E of the output transistors is too high, the transistors are likely to be damaged when excessive collector current (Ic) flows. In this set, the protection circuit is designed to operate when Ic and Vce exceeds a certain value.
DC Voltage Detection Circuit (speaker protection)
When the DC voltege may appear at the speaker terminals during a malfunction, it may make speaker in trouble. To prevent this, the DC components in the output terminals are detected by the filter circuit of R818 and C811; when it is (+) voltage, Q803 is turned on, Q805 is turned off, and the speaker circuit is cut off by the relay; when it is (-) voltage, Q805 turns off by turning Q804, Q806 on and the relay is also operated. Incidentally, this protection circuit is reset automatically when the DC voltage disappears.
When the input terminals are touched by something or when some ultra low-frequency noise enters, speaker inputs are cut off temporarily but they reset automatically.

Hitachi D-E55 cassette deck

Hitachi D-E55
Microcomputer-Controlled Cassette Deck with Metal-tape Compatibility, Feather- Touch Controls, Auto Rec Mute Function, and Dual 12-LED peak Meters.
The first thing that will impress you about the D-E55 is that it has the look and feel of a precision instrument. The handsome styling and the incredibly smooth operation provided by the built-in microprocessor and power-assisted feather-touch controls are unexpectedly luxurious considering the D-E55's accessible price tag. A large number of computer-controlled automatic functions have been incorporated, too - for exceptional flexibility and convenience. You get Auto Rec Mute, Auto Rewind Play/Stop, Computerized memory Rewind, Timer Play/Record, and provision for optional remote control.
Naturally, the D-E55 also gives you the greatsound Hitachi is famous for.. It's metal-tape compatible, and there's a 4-position tape selector switch to get excellent performance with any find of tape. Dual 12-LED peak level indicators permit accurate setting of recording levels.

Microcomputer Control
Conventional tape decks use mechanical linkages to engage the mechanism when you push the transport controls. These can eventually cause alignment problems, particularly if too much force is used. Also, a mistake in operation such as pushing fast forward instead of stop when  the tape is rewinding is liable to stretch the tape or damage the transport. The D-E55's microcomputer control ends thaes problems by intelligently managing all functions, gliding the transport into position at the proper time with just the right amount of force. What's more, all controls are feather-touch and can be switched directly from mode to mode without the need to push the stop button. The microprocessor also controls a variety of automatic functions.

Computerized Memory Rewind
Unlike ordinary memory rewind systems which rely on the tape counter to specify the desired stopping point on the tape, the D-E55 system uses the microcomputer to memorize the position of the tape when the Play button is pressed, allowing to rewind to the that point at any time. When the Memory rewind Play mode is selected, the tape begins to play after being rewound, very convenient for listening to a particular selection a number of times. Memory rewind is also a big help when recording; to re-recorded after having made a mistake, use memory rewind stop to return to the exact position you started at.

Auto Rewind Play/Stop
This handly feature adds a lot to operating convenience. In the Stop mode, the tape is automatically rewound when the end is reached and the transport is shut off- no need to waste time rewinding it later. In the play mode, the tape is automatically rewound at the end, the Play function is re-initiated so you hear the same side again until you stop it manually - ideal for continuous background music.

Auto Rec Mute
Still another feature made possible by the microcomputer, Auto Rec Mute makes taping easier and gives better results. One touch of the Rec Mute button and a 4-second section of blank tape is automatically made, the ideal waay to place intervals of silence between the selections on your tape. Intervals other than 4 seconds may also be made by using the pause button in combination qith the Rec Mute button. The pause indicator flashes once a second to help measure the exact time desired.

LED peak Meters
Instead of the usual machanical VU or peak meters, the D-E55 offers dual 12-LED peak indicators driven by advanced digital circuitry. Since there are no moving parts,, these meters do not suffer from delay or overshoot like their mechanical counterparts, and therefore provide accurate, instantaneous visual monitoring of signal levels.
You'll really appreciate how easy these meters make it to set precise record levels for top-quality recordings.

4-position Tape Selector Switch
A large variety of  recording tapeare available on the market, with widely varying characteristics. It is essential that the deck be matched to the particular type of tape in use ifideal results are to be obtained. The D-E55 has switch settings for metal, CrO₂, Normal, and FeCr tapes, giving you optimum results whatever tape type you use.
