What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Sanyo RD-4300 cassette deck

Stereo Cassette Tape Deck

The perfect stereo cassette tape deck for audio perfectionists. This brand new Sanyo model contains Dolby Noise (Reduction) which almost completely eliminates annoying huma and hissing sounds that heretofore have been an unavoidable part of stereo cassette recording and playback. This advanced unit also has a tape select switch for nominal or high quality chrome tapes. Monitoring while recording is also possible and a cue control and full automatic shut off are built in. At the end of a recording a special memory counter returns the tape to the exact beginning of the freshy recorded material.

Other outstanding features include a pause button, output level control for lineout level, DIN connector and two large VU meters a panel that automatically rises up from the unit at the touch of a button. Dolby noise Reduction

A simple comparison of sounds with the Dolby function switch on and then off clearly shows the value of this noise reduction circuit. Tape hissing and other irritating sounds and humming are almost totally suppressed.

Convenient cueing control, Auto Stop

Finding recorded sections of the tape during fast forward and rewind has been greatly facilitated with a built-in cueing device. There is also a full automatic shut off system that turns off the mechanism at the end of the tape during playback, recording, rewind or fast forward.

Tape select switch for ordinary and chrome tapes

Integrated Record and Playback Head

Sanyo engineers had to overcome two problems to permit cassette tape monitoring: fitting three heads into the standard cassette format designed to accept only two, and maintaining exact alignment of the record and playback head gaps without the constant adjustment required of some 3-head cassette decks. Sanyo engineers met this challenge with an integrated head design incorporating separate record and playback heads into a single housing. Since both heads are permanently mounted in the same shell, they can never become misaligned, assuring the best possible high frequency performance.

Dual process Dolby Noise reduction

The Dolby noise reduction process has become accepted as the standard for reducing tape his inherent in the recording process. Two-head cassette decks utilize a single Dolby encode/decode circuit for the both record and playback. The RD5372 (and RD5370) 3-head decks contain dual Dolby circuits to encode the recording and simultaneously decode the monitor playback

Microprocessor Logic Control

The Sanyo microprocessor is a tiny digital computer, etched onto a single silicon chip. It executes programmed instructions, sensing the status of switches, controlling solenoids, and monitoring tape motion. This tiny electronic "brain" provides the logic to prevent tape damage, and controls other automatic functions in the RD 5372 (and RD5370)

Sanyo RD-5350 cassette deck

A front-loading Dolby cassette deck featuring: bias and equalization selectors for "normal", ferrichrome and chrome tapes; two calibrated VU meters; three peak record level indicators calibrated at 0 VU, +3 dB, +6 dB; automatic and of tape stop/disengage; time control through the pause mode that permits a timer-controlled start in the record mode; a record mute that turns off the input signal when the tape is driving in the record mode; a reset counter. The tape mechanism is one of the best we've seen in terms of loading, overall handling, and cleaning of the tape path. It's an excellent front loader for handling by young children.

The Sanyo RD-5350 Dolby cassette deck has one of the most advanced drive motors ever put in a tape machine. It's a new frequency generator DC motor with Phase Locked Loop speed control servo that actually checks and corrects for even the most infinitesimal speed variations 1,247 times every second.
This hair-splitting accuracy helps give the RD5350 one of the lowest  wow and flutter figures in the industry; 0,05% WRMS. And lets the drive system ignore line voltage fluctuations, and breeze right through even "sticky" cassettes without missing a beat.
Naturally, the RD-5350 has one of the most rugged, precision tape transports available today and high performaance electronics. As a result, you get superior specs like 30 -17,000 Hz response (±3 dB, CrO₂ tape) and 64 dB Signal-to-Noise ratio with Dolby. Which is more Hz and less noise than you'll find on the discs and broadcasts you tape.
You also get advanced featres like 3 peak indicating LED's (0, +3, and +6 VU), separate input and output level controls, a Record Mute button for erasing short sections of tape, and a timer standby feature  for taping programs when you're not around.
1,247 times a second this motor checks itself for perfect speed.
How it works - Built into RD-5350 motor is a 68 pole tacho generator that produces a series of pulses proportional  to the motor speed. In the Phase Locked Loop integrated circuit, these pulses are compared with the signal from the precision reference oscillator (1246,7 Hz) if even a singe pulse is found to be slightly out of phase, power to the motor  is adjusted by a econd integrated circuit to restore synchronization. This process takes place independent of fluctuations in load or AC line voltage.
Performance:
The playback frequency response from a standard test tape with a 50 to 10,000 Hz range measured +1,5/-0 dB. Using TDK-AD tape:
Without Dolby, the record/play frequency response measured +0,6/-1,8 dB from 40 to 14,000 Hz, down 2,5 dB at 35 and 15,000 Hz. Distortion at the meter-indicated 0-VU record level was 1,1% T.H.D. with 5 dB headroom to 3% T.H.D. The Signal-to-Noise ratio referenced to 0-VU record level was 49,5 dB.
With the Dolby active, the record/play frequency response measured +1,5/-2,5 dB from 35 to 13,000 Hz. Distortion and headroom remained the same. The Signal-to-Noise ratio referenced to 0-VU record level was 55 dB wideband; 59,5 dB narrowband.
Using Scotch Master III  Ferrichrome tape:
With the Dolby active, the record/play frequency response measured +0/-3 dB from 38 to 15,000 Hz.
Distortion at the meter-indicated 0-VU record level was 1,3% T.H.D. with 5 dB headroom to 3% T.H.D.
The Signal-to-Noise ratio referenced to 0-VU record level was 57 dB wideband; 65 dB narrowband.
Using Scotch Master II Chrome tape:
The record/play frequency response measured +0/-2,5 dB from 35 to 14,000 Hz.
Distortion at the meter-indicated 0-VU record level was 2% T.H.D. with 3 dB headroom to 3% T.H.D.
The Signal-to-Noise ratio referenced to 0-VU record level was 57 dB wideband; 65 dB narrowband.
The maximum output level corresponding to a 0-VU record level was nominally 620 mV
The peak record level indicator calibrations were precisely on the mark at 0-VU, -3 dB, +6 dB.

Sanyo says this RD5009 cassette deck is another "first" because it offers metal tape capability at a very small price. Other features include: Dolby noise reduction circuitry; instantaneous LED bar=graph meters to monitor input levels or playback output; full auto-stop to disengage the mechanism at the end of the cassette tape to protect both the tape and deck transport mechanism; viscous-damped cassette door; mic/line mixing; digital tape counter with reset. Sanyo Plus T55 tuner

Digital Tuner with Memory
Described as "the first radical departure in tuner design in four decades". Sanyo's Plus T55 tuner combines an electronically tuned front end and digitally programmable quartz crystal reference oscillator to provide "superb" audio performance. And thre's another unique benefit; it's impossible to mistune a station. As long as the station's frequency appears in the bright fluorescent digital display and the center tune indicator is lit, the receiver is perfectly tuned at the exact point of minimum noise and distortion. Plus T55 has a passive four-pole LC filter that is double-tuned to reject not only the 19 kHz multiplex pilot tune, but also the 38 kHz multiplex subcarrier. Thus the high frequency subcarrier cannot interact with the bias frequency of tape decks. The band/mode selector lets you choose AM or either of two FM modes; auto, with automatic switching to stereo  mode in the presence of a multiplex signal; and mono, which suppresses stereo information in all signals, allowing noisy stereo signals to be heard with improved quality.

The Sanyo Plus 55 is elegant proof that moderate power and reasonable price in a stereo receiver do not inevitably mean compromise in  performance or features. Every aspect of its design, both internal and external, has been painstakingly worked and reworked to achieve a harmony seldom found even in far more to operate without being oversimplified. Tuner Section
Digital Plus Tuning
Unquestionably, the most striking feature on the Plus 55's handsome front panel is its unique dual-mode frequency display. Sanyo engineers knew that digital frequency readout was a necessity for completely accurate, unambiguous tuning. At the same time, they realized that many people do not know the exact frequencies of their favorite stations, and find it easier to remember the approximate dial pointer location for each station. So sanyo Digital Plus tuning includes both a conventional dial scale and a bright fluorscent digital frequency display, which travels with the illuminated pointer along the dial scale as the receiver is tuned. Digital Plus thus combines the convenience of analog tuning with the precision of digital, and is a Sanyo Plus series exclusive.

SQL Quartz-Locked Tuner Circuitry
The Plus 55 incorporates Sanyo's unique Sampling Quartz-Locked tuning system, which provides accuracy impossible to achieve with conventional tuner designs. The special AT-cut quartz crystal locks in stations, with no significant drift due to time or temperature changes.

LED Signal Indicators
Conventional tuning meters are replaced in the Plus 55 by an array of light emiting diodes. Signal strength is indicated by a 5 LED 'bar graph' display, while a separate LED indicates when the SQL system has achieved 'lock' on a given FM frequency (equivalent to a center-channel indicator). Both displays use high gain, DC-coupled voltage comparators for precise indications.

Dual-gate MOSFET RF amplifier
Sanyo solves the problem of FM front-end overload by using a dual-gate MOSFET (metal-oxide-silicon field effect transistor) in the front end circuitry. One of the device's gates recelves the antenna signal, while the second is driven by a DC voltage from the tuner's Automatic Gain Control circuit. Thus the RF gain is automatically reduced in the presence of strong signals, avoiding overload and cross-modulation distortion and keeping other stations from interfering with the one you want.

Advanced IF design
Outstanding performance in the Plus 55 's IF section is achieved by a combination of Sanyo IC's and 3 sophisticated ceramic filters. These solid state resonators provide extremely good rejection of unwanted signals, plus 'linear phase' characteristics in the passband (essential for low distortion in the audio program). A quadrature FM detector and Phase Locked Loop multiplex decoder assure outstanding stereo separation without the need for periodic realignment. The result is clean, clear listening and years of trouble-free reception.

Combined muting/mode switch
When stereo mode is selected, FM muting is automatically engaged to screen out stations which are too weak for enjoyable stereo listening. Muting is defeated in mono mode.

Dolby FM demphasis switch
A rear panel switch changes the tuner's FM deemphasis characteristic from the standard 75 µs to 25 µs for proper decoding of Dolbylized broadcasts with an external Dolby adaptor.

Preamplifier Section
High performance phono preamp
After years of intensive development Sabnyo has perfected an integrated circuit with ideal characteristics for handling low level phono cartridge signals. The Plus 55 phono circuit easily achieves an astonishing 87 dB Signal-to-Noise ratio (re10mV input), frequency response to 150 kHz , and distortion below 0,01% under most conditions. The differential first stage has anexceptionally wide overload margin (150 mV at 1 kHz) to easily handle high output cartridges and the extremely demanding transient peaks found on direct-to-disc and digitally mastered recordings. The differential configuration also isolates the RIAA equalization network from the phono input, to avoid frequency response errors caused by interaction of cartridge impedance with the network. Precision resistors and capacitors are used to hold RIAA equalization eror to a maximum of ±0,2 dB. Records sound the way they should, no matter which cartridge you prefer to use.

Versatile tone controls and filters
Bass and treble controls on the Plus 55 are of the Baxandall feedback type, and combine wide adjustment range with an almost total absence of interaction; even at maximum cut or boost, their effect on th emiddle of the spectrum is less than1/2 dB. You can adjust bass and treble without upsetting the tonal balance of the rest of the music.
The Plus 55 is provided with an 8 kHz high filter useful for removing hiss and scratches from noisy programs, and a 12 dB/octave subsonic filter to remove record warp and arm resonance signals.
These inaudible signals can consume large amounts of amplifier power, creating distortion of audible bass and putting a severe load on woofers. The loudness control provides moderate bass and treble boost at low volume settings to compensate for the ear's reduced sensitivity to these frequencies.

Two tape deck inputs with dubbing
The Plus 55 allows recording and monitoring with two tape decks, as well as dubbing from one to the other at the push of a button.

Power Apm Section
High Speed DC amplifier
Except for the DC blocking input capacitor, the Plus 55 power amplifier is totally direct coupled from first stage to speaker terminals. Frequencies from 5 to 150,000 Hz are reproduced with virtually no phase distortion. Musical signals are reproduced exactlly as recorded, for the ultimate in realism.

Exclusive Sanyo Hybrid IC power stage
Sanyo's pioneering work in high power integrated circuit design now makes it  possible to put the entire power output stage of one channel of the Plus 55 in a single compact hybrid IC. Using a fully complementary, Darlingto-connected circuit configuration, the power stage achieves ultra-low distortion, outstanding waveform symmetry, plus a fast 60 V/µs slew rate to prevent transient distortion. Close mounting of the hybrid components on a copper plated aluminum substarate assures ideal thermal tracking of all components, for better bias stability and greater reliability  than an equivalent discrete circuit.

LED power indicators
These attractive 5-LED 'bar graph' displays give instantaneous indication of right and left channel output level. The LED's response time is far faster than any mechanical meter, and special 'peak-stretching' circuits make sure that even extremely short transisnts are visible to the eye. Amplifier output and possible overload canbe monitored precisely and easily. A range switch increases the sensitivity of the indicators by 10 times, for useful readings at low listening levels.

Speaker A/B switching
Allows connection and operating two pairs of speakers separately or simultaneously. Ecxcellent performance with 4 Ω loads permits running most popular speakers in parallel without loss of power or sound quality.

4-way output protection
A protective relay locked between teh amplifier output and the speaker terminals operates to disconnect the load under any of the following conditions.
When the unit is first turned on ( after a 5 second delay for the circuits to stabilize the speakers are reconnected)
When the heat sink temperature becomes too high for safe operation ( due to inadequate ventilation or sustained overload)
When special protection circuits sense the presence of a DC voltage at the outputs (which can quickly damage speakers)
In addition, current monitoring circuits operate to instantly shut down th epower stage if, for any reason, the output current should reach an unsafe level.
