What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

B&W Matrix 803 loudspeakers

Ideas from the B&W innovation pool.

The Matrix 803 contain an upper bass/midrange ubit in Kevlar - aB&W inovation now copied by many other manufacturers - and a Cobex cone bass unit with a modified matrix 801 tweeter mounted on top of the enclosure.

Throughout the Matrix 800 Series B&W Kevlar  cone drivers are employed to produce a unique break-up pattern which enables the speakers response to roll-off in a controlled manner aabove their working range. Kevlar's unusual directional weave induces a largely self-cancelling resonant pattern across the cone.

Air is moved around close to the surface but no intrusive output is produced by the resonance. In consequence the Kevlar cone bass/midrange driver offers up a significantly more neutral sound with higher information retrieval. In the Matrix 803 the Cobex cone lower bass driver is optimised for bass frequencies as its performance is confined to below the lower midrange. A specially formulated rubber surround enhances both drivers performance giving higher electrical/mechanical damping ratios, resulting in a more accurate and faster sound when reproducing bass transients.

At high frequencies, the modified Matrix 801 tweeter incorporates magnetic fluid cooling to damp any unwanted resonances leading to noticeably smoother response, and in the process, more than dounling the tweeter's power handling. The tweeter's position on top of the enclosure provides a spaciousness of image not found in many other loudspeakers.

 MATRIX 804

Stand-mount or bookshelf loudspeaker system

The Matrix 804 contain an upper bass/midrange unit in Kevlar - a B&W innovation and a Cobex cone bass unit with a modified matrix 801 tweeter mounted on top of the enclosure.

A 165 mm 96-1/2") Kevlar coned bass/midrange driver unit, incorporating a 30 mm (1-1/8") high-temperature voice coil on Kapton former. Kevlar cone drivers are employed to produce a unique break-up pattern which enables the speakers response to roll-off in a controlled manner above their working range. Kevlar's unusual directional weave induces a lergely self-cancelling resonant pattern across the cone.air is moved around close to the surface but no intrusive output is produced by the resonance. In consequence the Kevlar cone bass/midrange driver offers up a significantly more neutral sound with higher information retrieval.

The tweeter's position on top of the enclosure provides a spaciousness of image not found in many other loudspeakers.

From the outset the design brief for the Matrix 805 was to produce a compact loudspeaker in the 800 Series suitable for both stand or shelf mounting - particularly the latter wher the practical size limit is around 10 - 12 liters. Consequently, the size of the Matrix 805 is only one third of the next loudspeaker in the series, the 804. unlike similar sized speakers however, this has not meant sacrificing either efficiency or bass extension, thanks to B&W's sixth-order alignment. In addition many of the lessons learned from the 800 Series have been incorporated into the 805 - not least B&W's pioneering matrix cabineet construction. Other major features include a kevlar coned bass/midrange driver incorporating a 30 mm high-temperature voice coil on a Kapton former and low hysteresis surround for optimum transient performance.

High frequencies are handled by a tim-aligned metal-domed tweeter, adapted from the Matrix 801, which has been mounted on the top of the enclosure, to substantially increase the spaciouness of the sound image. This unit incorporates all the latest advances in materials technology to ensure good power handling and freedom from compression effects - essential for the faithful reproduction of the transient information present in moder digital recordings. Of course, high quality units in themselves are of no advantage if the crossover is not of similar quality. To this end, all the capacitors in the direct high frequency path are of the superior polypropylene type, and onlly heavy duty inductors are used for the low frequency filter. As a final refinement, the high- and low-frequency sections of the crossover are physically separated to minimise component interactions.

Product Summary

The Matrix 805 is the smallest of the Matrix 800 Series, but it has all the technology and characteristics,  clarity, power and performance of the bigger monitors.

The tweeter on top is ferrofluid cooled. The 165mm bass/mid-range driver is a Kevlar® cone.  And as with all the Matrix 800 Series, the drive units use the minimum number of crossover components and the high and low-pass section are physically separated to minimise component crosstalk. The Matrix 805 is a compact, highly sensitive 87 dB shelf or stand-mounted monitor.

As a home Hi-Fi monitor, it is ideal when space is at a premium. As a front or rear channel monitor in a Home Cinema system, the Matrix 805 excels. The entire Matrix 800 Series is.

Acoustically Voice Matched to deliver the same tonal balance. The Matrix 805, used in conjunction with the Matrix 800 ASW and the Matrix HTM will deliver seamless surround sound with depth, power and accuracy.

Kevlar®: B&W developed and patented the method of using Kevlar® for loudspeaker cones to reduce unwanted standing waves. DuPont originally reated Kevlar® for use in bulletproof vests.

Tweeter on top: B&W's Tweeter on top technology ensures that the sound remains focused and time-sensitive and that the stereo-image is presented with unparalleled three dimensional accuracy.

Matrix: The basic construction of nearly all loudspeakers is exactly the same - panels of wood-based materials, bonded to form a rectangular box. B&W studied and evaluated how each aspect of cabinet behaviour and the efficiency of various materials and construction methods affects sound.

B&W DM 4

The DM4 was released at the International Audio Fair, October 1972 in the firm belief that the design aims have been achieved, and from extensive comparasion with other systems currently available we believe the DM4 may well out-perform competitive loudspeaker systems of three times the size and twice the price.
The DM4 is a 3-unit loudspeaker comprising highly developed Bextrene coned Bass/Mid-range unit (designed and produced in our own factory), type HF1300 Mk II lower high frequency unit and a 19 mm plastic domed upper high frequency unit. Third oreder Butterworth filters are used throughout and the crossover unit closely integrates the optimum performance of the three units to give an exceptionally smooth response extending from 30 Hz to above 25 kHz.
The DM4 monitor is individually pen tested in anechoic chamber and supplied with automatic pen plot showing frequency response.

Stand-mount/Bookshelf loudspeaker system
Product Summary
The DM4 is a three-unit monitor loudspeaker system that produces high quality results from an incredibly small cabinet, making it perfect for home or small studio where space is at a premium. Acoustic loading is by a very dense, critically damped enclosure with a small controlling vent to optimise the response between 60 and 120 Hz. This also produces considerably reduction in cone excursion from 30 to 60 Hz.

Technical highlights
The bass/midrange units come in a critically contoured Bextrene cone configuration. This is laminated in a highly resistant damping compound that ensures linear frequency response to at least an octave above crossover.
The upper mid frequency unit offers wide dispersion from a virtual point source and a 19mm low diaphragm mass plastic dome unit extends frequency response to above 25 kHz

B&W Matrix 1

The B&W Matrix 1 loudspeaker system incorporates the first radical improvement in enclosure design for many years. Invented by Laurence Dickie (B&W Chief Electronics Engineer) it is an ingenious new type of construction, concealed within the loudspeaker cabinet. This unique construction - the B&W Matrix - virtually eliminates cabinet vibrations, which in ordinary loudspeakers add their unwanted contribution to the final sound.
This is a monitor quality loudspeaker system capable of generating extremely high sound levels. At the same time, due to its wide and balanced frequency response, it will faithfully reproduce the quieter sounds of a solo instrument requiering considerably lower sound level for a faithful reproduction of the live performance.
Quite deliberately, the B&W matrix series of loudspeaker are described as digital monitors. They have been designed for the age of the compact disc, with all the additional reqirements that this material places on the loudspeaker system - such as increased dynamic range, increased transient information, lower noise floor, etc.
B&W Matrix 1 is, however, just as mich at home with good analogue material and essentially will faithfully reproduce whatever signals are fed to it.
 The loudspeaker drive units
Having made this major breakthrough in enclosure design, B&W used their ongoing research programme to incorporate totally new drive units within the Matrix series of loudspeakers. For the bass and bass/midrange units, anew material - homopolymer polypropylene - was chosen. A ferrofluid design was employed for the high frequency transducer, giving an additional 8 dB of clear dynamic range for the increased transient signals of the compact disc.

Crossover, filter network and protection circuits
In any product, when the designer improves one module, others have to be upgraded if the whole is to be superior. Take the example of a car for which a new, improved engine is developed; better brakes and suspension must then complement the improved performance from the power unit if the car is to be a totally better product. Likewise with the B&W Matrix series of loudspeakers: having improved both the enclosure and the drive units, corresponding improvements were necessary both in the components and design of the crossover. The APOC protection circuit on which B&W hold world patents, has also been upgraded.
 The B&W Matrix enclosure.
The newly invented Matrix enclosure, on which patent applications are pending throughout the world, is the heart of this loudspeaker and represents on of the few new inventions related to loudspeaker enclosures for many years. The B&W matrix or honeycomb structure which fills tha air space inside the cabinet prevents the enclosure (as opposed to the loudspeaker drive unit) from radiating sound, almost completely. This has never before been achieved.

B&W DM 110

 DM110 Stand-mount/Bookshelf loudspeaker system
This Digital Monitor system DM110 was designed and made by B&W, the British manufacturer whose loudspeakers are used by the leading recording companies worldwide to monitor digatl recording sessions.
It is a 2-way system of quite exceptional sensitivity. Other characteristics are broad linear frequency response and excellent transient performance, even at very high sound pressure levels.

 Product Summary
The DM110 is a two-way loudspeaker system acclaimed by reviewers worldwide. Outstanding for its high power handling capacity and super sensitivity.
When Trevor Attwell of Hi-Fi news reviewed the speaker his comments were “a very neutral uncoloured loudspeaker giving excellent imaging some of the best I have yet heard from moving coil systems at the price – and from some far more expensive ones”
 Technical highlights
Refinements in the enclosure give the DM series reduced in lower mid-band coloration and a dramatic improvement in transient response.
Advanced optimisation techniques employing modal analysis of the cabinet structure were a design feature of the enclosure in all four monitors.

B&W DM-550

Following on from B&W's highly acclaimed and successful 100 Series, the DM550 digital monitor takes full advantage of a whole new generation of design technology to produce improved performance with a higher frequency range and lower colouration.  With its aesthetically pleasing styling, your DM550 is designed to anticipate individual preferences and match all types of environment.
System parameters for the B&W 500 Series have been optimised by the extensive use of computer aided design to ensure efficient and extended low frequency performance. To achieve the goal of flatter response curves and lower colouration, totally new drive unis have been designed - benefiting from the use of finite element predictions of cone behaviour and laser interferometer assessment of prototypes. Quite deliberately, the B&W 500 Series of loudspeakers are described as digital monitors. They have been designed for the age of the compact disc, with all the additional requirements that this material places on the loudspeaker system - such as increased dynamic range, increased transient information, lower noise floor, etc. B&W DM550 is however, just as much at home with good analogue material and essentially will faithfully reproduce whaatever signals are fed to it.
 Stand-mount/Bookshelf loudspeaker system
The tailored two-way closed box design incorporates a 6" bass/midrange driver with a large magnet assembly thrusting high pressure sound reproduced to precise limits dictated by the dimensions of small enclosure.
A one piece moulding has been used to strengthen the cabinet rigidity between drivers and front baffle. The metal-domed high frequency unit dictated by CAD allows the simplest of crossovers to be used. All of which increases cost-effectiveness without impairing linearity.
 Technical highlights
B&W's Tweeter technology ensures that the sound remains focused and time sensitive and that the stereo image is presented with unparalleled three dimensional accuracy.
The cabinets feature a specially designed high density front baffle which achieves almost Matrix-like stability in strengthening overall enclosure construction. The bevel edges of the front moulding reduce diffraction and improve dispersion.
The crossover components use heavy gauge wire throughout and new drivers guarantee not only high reliability but ensure that top specifications are met
The design brief for DM550 called for a small and cost-effective loudspeaker that could be incorporated unobtrusively into the home, while still possessing the linearity and bass extension of true monitor system.

The drive units
The two-unit closed box alignment chosen for DM550 employs a specially designed 160 mm (6") bass driver, with 26 mm (1") high temperature voice coil. This enables a simple crossover to be employed which not only increases cost effectiveness but retains system linearity.
The new metal-domed tweeter uses the same diaphragm as the highly acclaimed Matrix 801 Series 2, and gives true piston behaviour up to frequencies in excess of 20 kHz. And like all B&W components, it's B&W made.
The enclosure
The expertise B&W have gained with cabinet technolgy following the invention of the B&W Matrixx Series has enabled us to reduce unwanted cabinet vibration. In the case of the 500 Series  our attention has been focused on the front baffle construction, and we make full use of modern structural plastics, to both strengthen and enhance the appearance.
 The crossover
Sophisticated computer technology has enabled B&W  to optimise each component in the crossover network at the design stage. Every production sample is also computer-tested to close tolerance, ensuring that each loudspeaker faithfully reproduces the original design specifications.

Overload protection
A 2-amp quick-blow fuse protects the system against excessive input of normal musical signals. However, certain abnormal signals, particularly those containing only high frequencies, could damage the tweeter. The usual precautions, such as turning off the amplifier before connections are made, should be observed. The fuse is located in the rear of the cabinet.
