What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Altec Lansing Model Three II loudspeakers

Altec Lansing Model Three series II

Efficiency. What does it mean? It means a lot of sound out from a little power in - yes, always. It means large components and cabinets - well, most of the time. It means expensive systems - practically all of the time. But not with the Model Three. The Three is a system of moderate size and price with an efficiency level rivaling much more expensive systems. Efficiency, or sensitivity, is one of the most important yet most overlooked performance parameters. It indicates how much acoustic output a speaker can deliver for a given amount of electrical input. The larger the number, the more sensitive the speaker.

As an example, if a speaker has a sensitivity rating of 90,5 dB SPL, as does the Three, it will have more than 10 times the acoustic output as another speaker with a rating of 80 dB SPL, with the same input power. This is like multiplying the amplifier's power by 10. your 20-watt receiver just becomes a 200-watt super-amp.

The Three gets its efficiency from its 10-inch bass driver (which features a quality die cast frame) and optimally tuned, vented enclosure. The unique low-loss magnet structure creates a high level of flux in the gap, allowing the lighter-than-normal cone/voice coil assembly to be excited with small amounts of power.

A 12 dB per octave dividing network provides signal transition at 1500 Hz to a 4-inch  frame cone-type driver for high-frequency reproduction.

The hand-rubbed oak veneer cabinet and stretched knit grille form gracefully styled piece of furniture constructed of quality, natural materials that have virtually disappeared from other speaker systems in the price range of the Model Three.

Altec Lansing Model One II

The second generation of Altec Lansing Bookshelf Models
Perhaps more than any other single audio component, the speaker-on-the-shelf has come to represent Hi-Fi. Its classic design and compact size have made it a favorite the world over. But all bookshell speakers are far from being equal.
At Altec Lansing, have always believed that their speakers should deliver outstanding performance.
So Altec Lansing  invest years of research and refinement in evry product their make. The result of this effort is the Series II Bookshell  Line.
Five speakers - each an exceptional performer. Each made better by subtle changes in acoustic design, construction techniques and material selection. Changes like the new hybrid magnet designfound in the Models one through Seven.
Until now, speaker magnet structure design was either of the traditional Alnico or ceramic type.
The Alnico type uses a voice coil that surrounds the magnet. It has been found, however, that the interaction of the voice coil and the magnet will eventually cause the magnet to partially demagnetize. The result is a loss of sensitivity and a muddy bass sound. The ceramic magnet poses a different problem. Here the voice coil moves around the pole piece and is surrounded by the magnet. The thinner magnet, however, creates a clearance problem for the voice coil.
The Altec Lansing hybrid magnet design  combines the best of both magnet types. The new design still has the magnet around the voice coil, but the new "top hal" design eliminates the clearance problem.  Of course the one thing we would never change is the quality that Altec Lansing is known for. We still mke all our speaker components and all our bookshelf speakers are finished with real wood veneers.
So if you're looking for top performance combined with the classic appearance of a bookshelf speaker,  search the Altec Lansing for a demonstration of the Series II Bookshelf speakers.

Altec Lansing 605B

ALTEC 605B DUPLEX
Altec ''Duplex'' Loudspeakers are two-way transducers, consisting of independent high and low frequency units, mounted within one physical frame, to provide the quality advantages of a professional two-way speaker system in compact form. The efficiency, power handling capacity, and extremely wide response of these units make them an ideal choice for both single-source (high-level) and distributed(low-level) sound system. The 605B provides minimal distortion, wide range, smooth response, and excellent distribution characteristics to assure perfect audio reproduction of speech and music for all PA, sound reinforcement or background music installations and for high quality monitoring of broadcast and recording material.
Each 605B 'Duplex' Loudspeaker is supplied with a professional-type, fullsection dividing network, incorporating a high-frequency balance control for correctly matching or adjusting to the acoustical characteristics of individual listening areas.
The 605B 'Duplex' - one of the finest 15-inch, full-range loudspeakers in use throughout the audio industry - has, for years, been the accepted standard monitor loudspeakers of major broadcast and recording studios, The 605B covers the audio range from 20 to 20,000 Hz. The exceptional uniformity of response is due, in part, to the large, edge-wound voice coils (aluminum in the high-frequency section and copper in the low-frequency section), operating in magnetic gaps of high flux density, produced by independent oversize Alnico V magnets. The large 2¼'' aluminum high-frequency diaphragm has tangential compliance, and is coupled to a heavy, high-impact, compression-molded multicellular horn. It provides outstanding sound distribution and clarity of the higher musical harmonics - without annoying resonant 'peaks' or 'hollows' which produce undesirable sound cancellation. A combination of phasing plug and pole piece, precision-machined with two acoustically exponential annular slots, assures correct phase relationship between the center and outer edge of the HF diaphragm. The high compliance low-frequency cone, driven by the large 3'' copper voice coil, reproduces the lowest fundamental bass tones without frequency doubling of 'bottoming' - even at full rated power.

Altec Lansing Five

The Model Five utilizes a novel technique; It employs three drivers in a two-way system; a single bass driver, but two drivers for high frequencies instead of one. The result is increased midband sensitivity, 91.5 dB SPL at 4 feet, which is quite high for a speaker system i the Five's price range.
And, since the high-frequency energy is evenly divided between two drivers instead of just one, system power capacity is increased over single driver designs. The drivers are positioned on the baffle in a manner that produces uniform dispersion and an accurate stereo image whether the cabinnet is placed vertically or horizontally.

The vented enclosure and 12-inch bass driver combine to produce excellent low-frequency energy response to 45 Hz. Fundamentals are tight and clear, with a minimum of distortion, and without doubling or artificially accentuated upper bass frequencies. The Five eliminates the "boominess" soprevalent in other speaker systems in its price range.

The hand-rubbed, genuine oiled walnut cabinet is tastefully styled with finished baffle and removable knit grille.

Altec Lansing Fifteen

Excellent acoustic output, full range response and extended bandwidth in a two-way system - the Fifteen speaks for itself. It represents a new generation of two-way systems - reaching far beyond the technology emoloyed in previous two-way floor-standing speaker systems.
The innovative radial phase plug, a result of a year-long Altec Research and Development investigation, is a key element in the Fifteen's extended high frequency response. It is the heart of an all new compression driver developed by Altec to give smooth response to beyond 20 kHz when coupled to the unique curved radial horn that has been adapted for use in the Fifteen.

An exhaustive research program concentrating on low frequency performance has led to a thorough investigation of the enclosure/driver interrelationship. Internal acoustic pressure variations, material energy absorption, and dynamic thermal factors have been examined , analyzed and controlled to provide an optimum balance of low-frequency band limits and sensitivity. The Fifteen's superb low-frequency performance is the result of this enclosure tuning technology investigation.

Extended low end, extended high end - results of major research and development efforts from Altec.  Put these powerful new technologies together in a hand-rubbed, oiled oak or walnut cabinet and you have the Fifteen - an exciting addition to any quality system.
Outstanding response and elegant styling - the Fifteen is equally comfortable in studio or living environment.

Altec Lansing model Nineteen

We,ve done some intense research into speaker performance limits, resulting in rarical new technology in our high frequency drivers ... the radical phase plug, the key to the Nineteen's versatility. This sharp contrast to conventional phase plug design is the innovative force behind the wide-range capability of the Model Nineteen, offering a system providing the ultimate in fullrange response.

If you're looking for extremely low distortio, top power capacity plus extended bandwidth - look no further. The Ninteen offers all of the bandwidth advantages with none of the crossover problems found in many floor-standing three-way systems.

The result: a powerful two-way system with unegualed high-end plus commanding low-end response.

The Nineteen also features a dual-range equalizer designed to allow smooth, gradual equalization, compensating for variations in room acoustics or personal listening tastes.

Its owerwhelming full-range capability and response is aided by an optimally tuned, vented enclosure, the product of more exhaustive investigation, which makes the Nineteen ideal for home listeners who want studio-monitor performance and quality.

And, the Nineteen's beautifully-styled oiled oak or walnut cabinet, hand-rubber and finished on all sides, makes it an integral part of any listening environment.

Altec Studio Monitor Speaker Systems are designed to meet the stringent specifications of extended frequency response, low distortion and wide dynamic range that are required for use in recording and broadcasting studios. The bass loudspeaker produces extended low-frequency response even when driven at exceptionally high power levels. Two frquency adjustnent controls (high and mid-range) are provided to adapt the Studio Monitor Speaker Sysyems to a wide range of acoustic enviroments, including audition rooms, recording studio control room monitoring, mastering and remix rooms, playback and monitoring broadcast studios, auditoriums, theatres, churches, conference rooms and other professional applications.

All of these Studio Monitor Speaker Systems combine excellent overall bandwidth, low distortion, uniform dispersion and extended frequency response. For applications where sensitivity and acoustic output are of major importance, the Model Nineteen should be used.

Frequency Controls

two frequency controls are located on the network/equalizer assembly, behind the grille. When the controls are positioned in the Optimum area of adjustment, a 'flat' frequency response is obtained for most acoustic environments.

When the HF Level control is turned counterclockwise from the Optimum area, the higher frequencies are 'rolled off' or reduced in volume. This enhances the bass and mid-range frequenties.

When the MF level control is turned counteclockwise from the Optimum area, the mid-range frequencies are attenuated, producing a 'dip' in the mid-range portion of the audio spectrum. This enhances the bass and treble frequencies. Turning the control clockwise from the Optimum area enhances the mid-range frequencies.

Maximum range of the two controls is nominaly 14 dB. Upon inspection of the curves , some interaction is seen between the two controls. This control interaction prevents extreme imbalance between mid to high response, and assures minimum phase shift through the crossover network.

ALTEC LANSING MODEL 14

A lot of speakers claim tobe audio
breakthroughs. Our new Model 14 really is. In
fact, it's so unique, that before we could create
it, we first had to invent a whole new family
components. We began with a new type of horn,
The Mantaray. It's the first "constant directivity"
horn ever created. Conventional horns, cones and
domes(including socalled omnidirectional and
reflective speakers) tend to "beam", that is,
narrow their angle of sound radiation at higher
frequencies. This effect causes the stereo image
to lose strength off the center axis and to
actually wander.

Mantaray, on the other hand, delivers a clearly-
defined sound wedge that keeps its strength
regardless of the music's changing frequencies.
You get the full spectrum of sound and the most
solid three-dimensional stereo image you've ever
heard. And since the sound doesn't diminish off
center axis, the Model 14 enlarges your listening
area, your "stereo sweet spot".
As an extra benefit, Mantaray's precise sound
focusing means your music goes in your ears -
not in your drapes, walls and ceilings.
Consequently, it's more likely than other speakers to sound
the same in your home as it does in your dealer's showroom.
Then to give you even higher highs, we devloped
the first radial phase plug, The Tangerine. In
contrast to conventional phase plugs with two
equidistant circular slots that blocksome
frequencies, the Tangerine's tapered slots permit
a free flow of high frequencies to beyond 20 KHz.
Equally important to all this is our new
Automatic Power Control System. Unlike fuse-
type devices or circuit breakers, the systems
keeps track of the power pumped into the
speaker, lets you know with a blinking light when
power exceede safe limits, and then reduces
overloads automatically, but without shutting the
speaker off. It's quite a system.
In addition, the Model 14 offers you super-
efficiency, high-power handling capacity and
exceptional dynamic range, plus a new vented
enclosure with a 12-inch bass driver for a tighter,
crisper low end. So that's how audio history is
made. And it's all yours at a price that means
the best sound value available for your home
today.
