What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Technics SL-D3 turntable

Features:

Front panel controls provide exceptional convenience

Integral rotor/platter structure for stable rotation

"TNRC" (Technics Non-Resonance Compound) base material provides an acoustic shield

Low-mass, low-friction gimbal suspension tonearm

Pitch control with illuminated stroboscope

Viscous-damped cueing

Anti-skating control

Hinged, detachable dust cover

Auto-start, auto-stop, auto-return and programmable repeat play make the SL-D3 a pleasure to use.

Since everything is automatic, you don't need to touch the tonearm unless you want to move too a particular cut on the record. The "memo-repeat" feature allows you to repeat a rcord up to six times, or indefinitely if you prefer.

Ask any disc jockey about direct-drive specifications as accurate as these and he'll tell you how important they are. He'll also tell you how expensive they are. Unless he's heard about Technics D-3 turntables. You'll use our D Series turntables for the same reasons radio stations and discos use our professional turntables; the performance of Technics direct drive. Yet perhaps the best part about all this performance is the prices you can have it for.

And with Technics, the price includes our B-FG servo-speed control which constantly monitors and instantaneously corrects turntable speed. So even if the power fluctuates, your Technics direct-drive performance won't. that's an important feature.

So is having all the electronic controls on the front panel. You can turn the power on, change speed, change record size, program Memo-Repeat, even vary the pitch by 10%, all without ever lifting the hinged, detachable dust cover. But when you do, you'll discover Technics universal S-shaped statically balanced tonearm. It not only has an anti-skate control but oil-damped cueing , too.

And the Base is made from Technics unique THRC base material. So even if you play your music loud, there's little chance of acoustic feedback.

Sony TC-K81 cassette tape deck

The Professional-Grade Performance of Three-Head Design

Independent-Suspension heads

With their superior performance and enhanced operating flexibility three-head machines are obviously attractive. But there are several problems particular to the design of three-head cassette decks. For example, it is no simple matter to fit there heads into the cassette shell's openings. Fitting each head into a different opening raises the problem of tape skewing between the heads which causes azimuth error. Even slight azimuth error can result in audible high frequency losses. Thus, decks that insert each head through its own opening often require the user to re-adjust head azimuth before recording each side of each cassette.

However, placing the record and playback heads through the same opening can cause improper contact with the cassette's pressure pad, as well as interference between the two heads. In this configuration, bias leakage and magnetic cross-feed can degrade the monitored sound during recording when both heads are active. Sony with its long experience in three-head recording,, has solved these problems with a unique, new head configuration;

Independent Suspension.

Unlike the vast majority of three-head cassette decks, the Sony TC-K81 (and TC-K71), with Independent Suspension, use physically distinct, individually-shielded record and playback heads. Separate shielding reduces magnetic cross-feed and bias leakage dramatically. While physically distinct from each other, both the record and playback heads still fit into the cassette's center opening, in fact, the two head gaps are intentionally brought close together - less than 3,1 milimeters apart. As a result, both gaps make proper contact with the cassette's pressure pad. And the gaps are so close together that skewing error is reduced to the vanishing point. There is no need for user-adjustable azimuth.

Sony's Independent-Suspension three-head design ensures that the frequency response of these machines is not only extended, but also extremely stable. You can expect good result on each cassette, from the beginning of the tape to the end, on side A as well as side B. Of course the record and playback heads of these decks boast Sony's Sendust and Ferrite head formulation (as described for the TC-K44 and K61). The S & F design provides high permeability low specific resistance. Un supressed maximum flux density and exceptionally long service life.

Bias and Record Calibration

The TC-K81 incorporates even more sophisticated adjustments for each tape formulation. Bias and record calibrations permit the K81 to be handtailored to suit the requirements of each tape. Built-in test-tone oscillators, the monitoring capability of the three-head format and the deck's own Peak Program Meters combine to make calibration quick, simple, and precise.

The bias calibration procedure of the TC-K81 establishes flat frequency response by obtaining equal output for a 400 Hz and an 8000 Hz test tone. These tones are recorded and played back together, and displayed on the deck's meters. To make the adjustment, you simply turn the Bias Cal Knob for equal readings on both meters. Because switching to the calibration mode automatically increases meter sensitivity, the adjustment is accurate to within 0,5 dB.

The result is flat high-frequency response and low-distortion recording with any tape you use. In addition, the K81 provides record level calibration with the 400 Hz tone. You make adjustments with the left and right controls, setting the meters to the Rac Cal reference marks. When set, Dolby noise reduction tracking in encode and decode will be precise, resulting in accurate high-frequency sound during both loud and soft passages.

Closed-Loop Dual -Capstan drive

Conventional cassette decks use a single drive capstan, engaging a single pinch rolle; to drive the tape. While single-capstan drive often yields good performance, dual-capstan drive - using two capstans and two pinch rollers - is a superior system. The TC-K81 (and TC-K71) incorporate dual-capstan drive. Both capstans are driven from the BSL motor by the same belt, in a closed-loop configuration. The capstans are located on either side of the head assembly, for better control of tape tension, and minimum modulation noise.

Combining this drive system with a separate spooling motor, and two over-size anti-resonant flywheels, the K81  (and K71) achieve clear, unwavering sound, even during sustained notes.

Sony TC-K71 cassette tape deck

The Sony TC-K71 is outstanding examples of advanced technology in the service of music. This machine provide the exceptional sound quality of Sony's Independent-Suspension three-head design and the absolute precision of Closed-Loop Dual Capstan drive. The K71 offers variable bias for TypeI tapes, and including two-motor tape drive with BSL capstan motor and FG servo system, Sony's Dolby IC for greater dynamic range and lower distortion, microprocessor logic control with remote and timer capabilities, LED Peak-Program Meters with double indication peak-hold, and selected electronic parts for superior performance.

Three-Head Design

Many audiophiles prefer three-head decks - with separate erase, ecord, and playback heads - because this format permits them to monitor the tape an instant after it has been recorded. In this way, the user can compare the quality of the recorded music with the original source. Tape monitoring is convenient and in demanding applications, the monitored sound can be an invaluable recording tool. But three heads yield significant performance advantages, too.

A conventional cassette deck, with a combined record/play head different physical requirements from playback. Recording is a high-energy process, involving signal levels some 40 dB higher than playback. For good recording dynamic range, the head gap should be wide - three to five microns. Yet for playback high-frequency response, the gap should be narrow - no more than one micron. Any combined record/play head must necessarily represent a compromise between these two requirements.

The Sony TC-K71 circumvent this compromise. This deck have separate record and playback heads, each optimized to its particular function. The playback head has a narrow 0,9  micron gap for response out to 18,000 Hz. And the record head has a wide 4,5 micron gap for superb dynamic range. In fact, the high-energy capabilities of the record head easily meet the requirements of the most demanding tape formulations, including metal particle tape.

Variable Bias for Type

Slight variations in bias requirements from one brand to another can result in overly "bright" or "dull" high frequency response, and excess distortion. The problem is most serious for Type I tapes, which have the widest range of bias need. For this reason, the TCK71 variable bias for Type I cassettes. To use the bias control, you record sample material and switch back and forth between Tape and Source, correcting the bias for proper tonal balance.

JVC KD-A66 cassette tape deck

The B.E.S.T. Tuning System for Budget-Minded Perfectionists

The KD-A66 is an attractively priced deck, yet is laden with features like a programmed -to-order microcomputer (IC) for the JVC B.E.S.T. tuning system. It adjusts bias, equalization and sensitivity for optimum results from the particular cassette in use, automatically. And amazingly , it takes less than 25 seconds. This and other features should make the KD-A66 an even stronger choice for budget-minded perfectionists.

Get flat response from any tape with B.E.S.T.

While the mounted tape scurries back and forth under the supervision of the microcomputer, the B.E.S.T. tuning system records and plays back test signals on the tape and adjusts the deck in the following three areas:

Bias adjustment. Fine adjustment in eight steps.

Equalization adjustment. Fine adjustment in eight steps per channel.

Sensitivity matching. Eight steps to ensure accurate high frequency response when noise reduction is used.

The computer B.E.S.T. tuning system not only produces an ideal balance between bias, equalization and distortion, it also automatically detects whether the tape is normal-bias or chrome  (or chrome-equivalent) type, even if the deck's tape selector switches are incorrectly set.

After all is said and done, the B.E.ST. System gives you a flat response from 40 to 12,500 Hz with only ±1 dB deviation, no matter what tape is used.

Two-motor full-logic for finger-tip control

Direct change of mode, light-touch operation, punch-in recording and remote control - all of these technologies were reserved only for a handful of exotic and highly expensive decks until only a couple of years ago. Now you get all of these in the reasonably priced KD-A66. and thanks to the two-motor ID design, the tape transport offers low, low wow and flutter of only 0,4% (DIN 45 500)

All heads are hard-to-saturate SA (Sen-Alloy)

Again in the KD-A66, and X-Cut SA Rec/Play head is combined with aa two-gap SA erase head. Both heads are highly efficient, produce little distortion and low noise to assure clean recording from any tape you care to use.

Memory Stop/Play with auto rewind & play; a first-rate convenience.

This convenience allows you to enjoy repeat play of the whole tape or any portion between a counter-indexed section and the end of the tape. Or, you can elect to have the tape rewind at the end of play. You'll wonder how you ever got along without this feature:

Super ANRS and Dolby B compatible ANRS

5-LED multi-peak indicator (MPI)

Output level control, Timer standby

Remote control with optional R-50E

JVC KD-A11 cassette deck

Metal Cassette Deck - The Emphasis is on Economy and Performance
Why sacrifice metal tape capability and other state-of-the-art. Advantages just for the sake of saving a little money? This competitively priced model has metal tape capability and more, as well as good looks and simple-to-operate controls. And there's another reason why the KD-A11 is more popular than others in its attractive price range; it has high speed accuracy. JVC engineers have used a powerful silent motor and tigether with the accurate tape transport, wow and flutter has been reduced to a comfortably low level.

Metal Tape ready design

Of the four kajor types of tapes on the market today, metal tape far outdistances the others in offering low-noise/distortion performance with wide dynamic range and a high output capability. The KD-A11 is fully metal-tape compatible, having the JVC Metaperm head for recording and playback (it's made of a tough new alloy with very good electromagnetic characteristics), and a 2-gap ferrite head for erasure. A generous use of ICs throughout has helped us to expand dynamic range and reduce noise in the deck electronics.

Dolby B noise reduction makes music more listenable

All magnetic tape recording is prone to high-frequency noise (hiss) and cassettes are no exception. This noise is particularly annoying during the soft passages in music. But the KD-A11 has a built-in Dolby-B noise reduction systems, being compatible with JVC ANRS, it makes music more listenable by "dehissing" your tapes.

Automatic input select switching adds a few dbs of dynamic range to line recording

In many decks, plugging a microphone into the front panel jacks interrupts the line input to allow microphone recording. And when the jack is not occupied, the normal line signal still goes through the microphone amp on its way to the record amp. This result in more noise when you're recording from a tuner, amp, etc. Our automatic input select switching suystem means that only when a microphone jack is inserted does the signal feed through the microphone amp. At other times, the microphone amp is completely bypassed. This results in a higher Signal-to-Noise Ratio and wider dynamic range when recording line inputs.

Special features - Large VU s and silent cassette operation

The large VU s are calibrated up to +7 dB to indicate accurately even the high levels when recording with metal tape. They are well damped yet responsive enough so that you can read the average level moment to moment without straining your eyes. They are an effective tool against tape saturation and poor Signal-to-Noise Ratio.

Tape loading and unloading is simple and fast abd silent thanks to the JVC geared/oil-damped cassette door. It opens wide enough to offer full access to the heads for periodic cleaning.
