What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Yamaha T-550

 Yamaha T-550
The  T-550 is an advanced design employing the latest in Yamaha tuner technology to ensure that you get outstanding sound under any conditions. It features several circuit innovations that are designed to reduce distortion and improve signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity. New Yamaha developed Uniresonance ceramic filters are used in the IF stage, greatly improving selectivity. And a unique DC negative-feedback phase-locked-loop FM multiplex demodulator gives you exceptionally clean FM stereo reception with remarkable stereo separation.
Tuning is made easier than ever in the T-550 with a new quick tuning dial-pointer LED indicator that won’t let you make tuning errors. And an LED signal strength/signal quality indicator gives you precise monitoring of the incoming signal. There’s even a built-in recording calibration oscillator to help you set your tape deck’s record levels for best results when recording FM stereo broadcast. All these features, and more, make the T-550 an outstanding choice for the audiophile who is serious about his sound.
Ultra Low Distortion Multiplex Demodulator
The multiplex demodulator performs the critical task of separating the left and right stereo channels from the incoming FM signal. To do this accurately, without adding noise or distortion, it must be able to handle signals ranging from almost DC to 1 MHz or more. Yamaha’s unique DC NFB PLL multiplex demodulator circuit exhibits exceptionally wide frequency response and high slew rate, enabling the left and right channel signals to be separated without adding noise or distortion, or limiting frequency response. The result is super clean, clear FM stereo reception with superb clean, clear FM stereo reception with superb image resolution throughout the stereo sound field.
 Superb Sensitivity and Selectivity
The T-550’s state-of-the-art, innovative circuit design provides plenty of sensitivity to pull in weak and distant stations with surprising clarity -  a must if you live in a remote area. And original Yamaha Uniresonance ceramic filters offer excellent phase characteristics and selectivity so you can easily pick out any station even in the most crowded broadcast bands. You’re guaranteed great sound in any location, with any station.

Exclusive Quick Tuning System
This feature makes it simple to tune perfectly every time. Just watch the 2-LED indicator incorporated in the dial pointer as you tune. As you approach a station, one of the LEDs will light, indicating the direction the pointer needs to be moved. If you pass the station, the other LED will light, telling you to tune in the other direction. When both LEDs light, tuning is perfect. There’s also an LED signal quality meter that indicates signal strength an flickers to show the presence of multipath interference - a great aid when setting up your antenna for best reception.
Switchable FM Muting / Mono
For normal FM stereo listening the FM Muting should be switched on. This eliminates annoying inter-station noise while tuning. With Muting off, the Mono reception mode is automatically engaged.

AM Loop Antenna
AM reception in the T-550 is outstanding, too Rather than a conventional ferrite bar antenna, the T-550 features a unique loop antenna that is much more efficient for AM signal reception. By dramatically cutting down distortion, this innovative antenna makes AM listening almost as enjoyable as FM.
