What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Toshiba SA-850 receiver

Digital Synthesizer Stereo Receiver

Absolutely Precise Digital Synthesizer Tuning with 12 memory Positions, 4 Instant Selection of 6 FM and 6 AM Stations.

Beautifully styled with walnut side panels and brushed aluminum front panels. Lower half of front panel disappears into the unit to expose less often used controls. Double-pair speaker selection, tone control defeat (flat) switch, subsonic filter, loudness switch, stereo/mono mode selection, push-button source selection with full tape monitoring/duplicating facilities including a source-on/recording-off position.

Green LED tuner frequency, signal-strength, stereo and band displays. All push-button tuning system using quartz crystal digital synthesizer system providing manual and automatic tuning with six each preset memory stations for FM and AM.

A professional 41-position click-stop volume control is conveniently located at the upper right. Superb craftsmanship coupled with advanced technology -  the essence of Toshiba's attitude toward high fidelity component design.

Quartz Reference Frequency Synthesizer Tuner

Both the FM and AM tuner sections make use of quartz crystal reference frequency and digital frequency synthesizer circuits with PLL system to insure essentially perfect station tuning each and every time. What's more, the ultra-stable control voltage of the PLL is used to tune the 3-gang variable capacitance diodes of the front-end for excellent sensitivity and adjacent channel rejection. This means more received signal power for higher Signal-to-Noise Ratio and less phase distortion than from conventional tuners.

Manual and Automatic Tuning

You get your choice of tuning either manually or automatically with push-button selection. In the manual mode, you can tune up or down the FM band in 0,1 MHz increments while for AM, the increments are 1 kHz. In the automatic mode (FM :  Auto Tuning, AM : 10 kHz step tuning), you have a choice of any of six present stations and this holds true for either AM or FM giving you twelve preset stations in all. And more, presenting the station frequency is just as simple by manually tuning to the desired station and pressing two buttons (memory and channel). Channel frequencies are retained with power off and even for a good time with the power cord removed from the outlet.

Clean Stereo Amplification for Low Noise at High Power Levels

Full-complementary direct-coupled power amplifiers provide 50 Watts rms power per channel into 8 Ω  and are driven by low distortion differential amplifiers and powerful Darlington drivers with plenty of feedback for inaudible distortion. Clean power supply designs using an extra-large triple-secondary power transformer and twin 10,000 µFd filter capacitors keep power line noise and hum out of the outputs and prevent back-coupling to the low level preamp and tuner stages.

Full Tape Monitoring/Duplicating

You get provisions for attaching two three-head (or other) tape decks to the SA-850 with full monitoring provisions plus duplicating switching between the decks either way, 1 to 2 or 2 to 1. and, to isolate the input amplifiers of the decks when their power is off, a special intermediate source monitoring switch position (REC OFF) has been added which eliminates the record output signals to the decks.

Wide Range Sound Quality Controls

A large 41-position click-stop volume control is conveniently located at the top, right of the SA-850 to give you level control capability. Twin-pair speaker selection switching lets you fully utilize speakers in remote locations and provides silent operation for use with headphones. Bass/treble controls can be defeated by just loudness control. A subsonic filter eliminates rumble and other low frequency player/disc problems which occur occasionally and a mode switch permits monaural deck playback through both speakers.

Toshiba PC-5460 cassette deck

The Toshiba PC-5460 cassette deck, with an all-sendust recording head. Dolby FM and Direct Access feather-touch controls
When you buy any of Toshiba's cassette decks, you can take excellent sound for garanted.
Toshibs PC-5460 , for example, has inaudible wow and flutter; just 0,05% WRMS. A high Signal-to-Noise ratio; 69 dB (±3 dB, Dolby On, CrO₂). And wide frequency response 20 - 18,000 Hz (FeCr).
But Toshiba goes beyond specs, to professional features for continued superior performance. Consider the 5460's All-Sendust recording head. It stands up to wear much better than hardened permalloy. And it's noot susceptible to the "chipping" that can occur with ferrite heads.
Then, get your hands on our Direct Access feather-touch controls. The merest touch allows you to switch from one function to another without pressing the Stop button or jamming the tape.
And the Toshiba 5460's front-loading cassette compartment has an oil-damped soft eject mechanism, for smooth and convenient operation.
Of course, almost every cassette deck has Dolby these days. But few have Dolby FM as well. Toshiba does, with a switchable MPX filter circuit. So you can feed Dolby FM broadcasts through the 5460 to get cleaner sound. Whether or not you're recording.

The 5460 tape transport is DC servomotor-controlled.
And you'll appreciate the three-function meter plus LED peak indicator. And our new edit/fade control
Naturally, the 5460 has all the standards as well. Like three-position bias and equalization switches. Mike/line mixing. And circuitry to accommodate an accessory timer.

Toshiba ST-335 MkII tuner

The Toshiba ST-335 MkII is an AM/FM stereo tuner featuring a stereo beacon, a three-position LED FM center channel tuning indicator, a five-step LED signal Strength/ AM tuning indicator, and a record calibration (Rec Cal) tone output for pre-adjustment of the input level to a tape recorder. The record calibration output is 6 dB below (-6 dB) the output level from a 100% modulated FM transmitter. The FM center channel tuning "meter" consists of a two yellow LED s flanking a gree LED; optimum tuning is attained when only the green LED is lit. However, tuning is relatively broad in the 'green range", and distortion and separation values might vary from our measurements. The output is provided by two "patch cords" with phono plugs, approx 1 meter in length.
The FM pilot leakthrough is relatively high and a recorder's MPX filter must be used when making recordings from FM stations.

Toshiba PC-3060 cassette deck

Stereo cassette deck with Dolby B
The beginning of the range of Toshiba front-loaders and endowed with featuress which demonstrate very through thinking.
At its very popular price, the PC-3060 has exceptionally low wow-and-flutter. It has an auto-stop mechanism to protect both deck and tape from strain, a timer switch setting for automatically recording programmes while you are away.
The PC-3060 gives you full control of bias and equalization settings, so the best combination for all the latest high performance tapes can always be found - whether normal, chromium dioxide or ferrichrome.
The smooth and positive pianotype control levers are a joy to use and are indicative of the PC-3060's precise engineering. Cue/review plus auto-play facilities are combined on the play/rewind and fast forward controls. Stop and Eject functions are combined, so that the cassette is only ejected (and the compartment cover opened) after tape transport has stopped.

Toshiba SA-7150

The Toshiba 7150 locks into the center of any station's assigned broadcast frequency and eliminates drift.

A few yearas ago, Toshiba introduced and marketed the first fully electronic digital-synthesized tuner. Now Toshiba has another first. We've built a digital-synthesized tuner into a high-powered, low-distortion FM/AM receiver; the Toshiba 7150 with Synthetune™
Synthetune is a function that provides tuning so accurate even a center tuning meter is unnecessary.
Drift is eliminated.
The 7150's FM tuner section also contains flat group delay IF circuitry. And a quartz crystal oscillator, which automatically locks into the center of any station's assigned broadcast frequency - as precisely as the station's own transmitter.

Tune the 7150 just by pushing the auto-scan button. It scans the full range of the  AM or FM band, stopping precisely at each listenable station. Bright green LED numerals instantly display all frequencies as they are tuned. Of course, there's more to the 7150 than Synthetune. It also has separate transformers for class A and class B amplifier sections. The toroidal transformer for class B amplification has separate left and right power supplies.
It also has Dolby FM and an air check switch for accurate tape recording. Furthermore the 7150 delivers a minimum of 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz , with no more than 0,05% Total Harmonic Distortion. And the restof the specs are just as impressive.
