What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Optonica ST-3535 tuner

Outstanding Features

Multipath Detector Circuit

The ST-3535 incorporates a meter and terminals for an oscilloscope to detect multipath distortion and a built-in circuit to monitor its composition. The degree of multipath distortion is indicated by the meter, by the sound volume or by the waveform on the oscilloscope. Therefore, the antenna direction is easily and accurately reset. The circuit also improves FM listening and assures optimum recording.

Built-in Air Check Calibrator

This is a unique device for accurate "FM Air Check". Just flip on the switch and a level signal equivalent to that of the FM signal is generated. Then all you have to do is set the recording level to 0 VU on the deck.

Monolithic ICs are employed, Inter-station noise is eliminated by the muting switch

A hi-blend switch to reduce noise during reception of weak FM stereo signal

Variable audio output level control

Signal strength meter - this meter responses in proportion to the degree of signal intensity, thereby rendering effortless tuning under any condition

Easy-to-read-and-tune FM linear dial with a frequency-linear type variable capacitor, 8-11/16" wide scale, large flywheel and smooth tuning mechanism

FM signal input attenuator reduces distortion due to high signal input levels for stable FM reception

The FM antenna is equipped with dual terminals for 300 ohms or 75 ohms

Composite signal output terminal is provided for future possible FM 4-channel broadcasting

Outstanding Performance

Dual-gate MOS FETs and FM front end equipped with 4-gang linear tuning capacitor

The FM front end consists of a 4-gang capacitor that employs a double-tuned RF amplifier stage and a mixing stage. Remarkable performance characteristics such as 2,5 µV IHF sensitivity. 80 dB spurious response rejection ratio and 85 dB IF rejection ratio are attained. These figures assure high sensitivity and stable reception.

IF stage designed for high selectivity and interference protection

To obtain both ultra-low distortion characteristics and high selectivity, a phase linear ceramic filter and differential IC circuit are employed to make the phase characteristics at the IF stage linear. The band pass characteristics is also greatly improved.

PLL MPX circuitry

The PLL (phase-Locked Loop) circuit replaces the conventional coils and associated components with ultra-reliable integrated circuitry. The PLL circuit automatically compensates for phase-shift, thus ensuring stable separation for long periods of use.

A sub-carrier trap with inductive M-type filter is employed

Optonica ST-4405 tuner

Optonica ST-4405 in an AM/FM stereo tuner ; featuring a stereo beacon, LED FM center channel tuning indicator, 5-step LED signal strength indicator, and an FM Air Check 400 Hz output tone for presetting of a recorder's level controls. One set of variable line level outputs is provided.
The front panell hasonly one control: for tuning. The output level control is lockated on the rear apron. Front panel switches are provided for power, AM, FM mono, FM Auto (mono/stereo), FM muting, hi-blend (MPX noise filter), and Air Check.
The FM antenna input is 75/300 ohms. A rod antenna and external connection are provided for Am. One unswitched AC outlet is provided.

Performance
Full limiting was attained with 4,8 µV. For 300 Ω and "Tee" antennas the monophonic high fidelity sensitivity (60 dB quieting) measured 10 µV. The stereo high fidelity sensitivity 955 dB quieting) was 70 µV.
At standard test level the stereo frequency response measured +1/-1,8 dB from 20 to 15,000 Hz. Distortion depended on the tuning adjustment beacause the "center channel indicator" illuminates over a relatively large tuning range. Monophonic distrtion ranged from 0,15%  to 0,25%  T.H.D. stereo distortion ranged from 0,15% to 0,3% T.H.D. the Signal-to-Noise ratio measured 71 dB. Stereo separation was +40 dB . Selectivity was good.
The maximum output level corresponding to 100% modulation of the transmiter was 0,8 volts.
The Air Check output level was 0,55 volts; 3,5 dB below the stereo and mono output level corresponding to 100% modulation of the transmitter. For particularly clean recordings we suggest the recorder be adjusted to indicate no higher than -4 dB (below 0-VU/0-dB) when feeding the Air Check signal
Though stations can be received 9with considerable noise) below 3,4 µV input, the LED FM center channel indicator requires at least 3,4 µV before it turns on. The 5-step signal strength indicator requires at least 5,5 µV before the first (lowest value) step illuminates.
AM tuner performance is generally average, with higher than average sensitivity to signals on the high end of the dial.

Overall dimensions measured:  16-15/16" (wide), 2-21/32" (high); 15-1/2" (deep).
Weight is 11 lbs.

Optonica RP-5100 turntable

Direct Drive Stereo Turntable
The first step in ensuring performance stability in the RP-5100 was inclusion of the durect drive system with its FG servo Mono Torque DC coreless motor. This precision drive system suppresses rumble and cogging while ensuring rotational speed precision and a prolonged service life. A separate tonearm motor helps maintain this rotational precision while increasing tonearm trackability. The design of the statically-balanced J-shaped tonearm serves as an inside force canceller while enhancing trackability. To ensure extra precision in rotational speed control, a stroboscope was built into the Rp-5100 to detect even small fluctuations in speed and to compensate for them instantly. The pitch control, in combination with the stroboscope, can be employed to make fine adjustments in the turntable rotating speed.

Optonica SM-105H
Straight DC Stereo Integrated Amplifier with Fully Electronic Control System

This perfectly "straight" amp is a result of Optonica's efforts to provide a fully digital system based on a lead-less and contact-less design. A combination of fully direct-coupled amplifier circuitry and fully electronic controls for tone, volume and balance completely eliminated the use of lead wires to improve frequency response. Conventional mechanical controls were replaced with electronic circuitry to eliminate contacts. Microcomputer-controlled circuitry splits up the signal to ensure more precise tone control and offer a wider dynamic range, better Signal-to-Noise ratio, lower distortion and greater durability.
A full remote control system, unique graphic displays and an innovative sound memory system were added to match the outstanding performance of this amp.
