What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Leak 2001 turntable

Transcription Turntable

The new leak 2001 transcription turntable incorporates a unique spherodynamic method of isolating against external shock vibration and acoustic feedback. Small jolts which can damage an expensive record are eliminated.

The turntable itself is belt driven and its speed does not vary by more than 0,1% even when using a record cleaning device.

The synchronous 10 pole motor with a ferrite rotor ensures accuracy of speed even with changes in supply voltage and loading.

The precision engineered pick-up arm accommodates all cartridges with standard 127 mm mounting centres and has adjustable bias setting and adjustment for minimum tracking error with any cartridge.

Leak 2000 receiver

The Leak 2000 Tuner-Amplifier has been manufactured to the highest specifications and includes the most comprehensive facilities.

Amplifier Section

The powerful 35 watts per channel amplifier is of advanced design, using modern technology power transistors and direct coupling to the loudspeakers. This provides exceptional power band width and damping factor down to the lowest audio frequencies. The wide band width design of the amplifier ensures minimum intermodulation distortion and very low harmonic distortion through the audio spectrum. Incorporated in the amplifier is special protection circuitry, this prevents damage to the bass speaker unit and prevents damage or fuse blowing within the amplifier in the event of a short circuit occurring.

Tuner Section

The tuner section incorporates numerous advanced technical features. The high quality front end, incorporating an FET provides high sensitivity with excellent stability. The IF circuitry is designed round a 14 pin integrated circuit using state of the art. Technology. The phase locked loop-stereo decoder provides high stability of stereo separation.

Special facilities for extending your hi-fi system

The 2000 Tuner-Amplifier includes special facilities for extending the uses of your hi-fi system.

Auxiliary input - this may be used for connecting an additional item of equipment, for example a television fitted with sound output facility.

Normal/Matrix Switch - when this switch is pressed, the speaker 2 connections are modified, allowing the loudspeakers connected to the speaker 2 sockets to operate as the rear-channels in a simulated 4-channel system. This provides a good simulation of concert hall reverberation effects

Preamplifier and Main Amplifier Normal/Separate switch - this allows flexibility in the use of the tuner-amplifier. With the switch in the Out (normal) position, it operates in its normal mode.

With the switch in the IN (separate) position, the preamplifier output is no longer connected to the main amplifier. A particular use of this facility is the interconnection with a rear channel amplifier, containing a matrix decoder (e.g. for SQ or QS systems), for the reproduction of quadraphonic sound (4-2-4 system).

The normal/matrix and the normal/separate switches give the option therefore of two types of 4-channel sound.

Variable level FM muting control - when the mute button is depressed, rotating the mute level control clockwise increases the minimum threshold level of signal the receiver will accept. Location of local transmissions is then made easier by the elimination of remote broadcasts.

Leak 3090 speakers

In Europe, home of some of the world's finest speakers, the Leak 2075 became recognised as a reference. Hardened professionals used this product as a yardstick by which other products were measured.

Enter the 3090 - the yardstick has grown.

The most dramatic improvement is the use of our patented Isodynamic tweeter. This is a flat-field unit, using no conventional coil, cone or dome. Instead, an ultra thin diaphragm with a printed circuit. This is activated by rows of miniature magnets made from Samarium Cobalt - the most powerful magnetic material known to man. The result - a response right up to 26 kHz -3 dB and possibly the best dispersion characteristics of any tweeter around.

The midrange is handled by two separate units. The upper midrange unit has holes in it. The precise positioning of these holes was worked out using laser-beam holography, so that delayed resonances are eliminated and this is one of the sweetest midrange units in existence. The lower midrange operates from 500 to 2000 Hz. About 40% of music power occurs in this band and the unit is built to take it - the cone is a sandwich of polystyrene and aluminium for great rigidity.

In the 3090, we have taken special care to make it right for any room, your room. Environmental Controls for Low Mid Range, High Mid Range and the ISO tweeter enable you to find the rigid tonal balance in the listening area and the swivelling upper cabinet means that these directionally sependant frequencies can be tuned to optimal dispersion for your favourite listening position.

Bass frequencies are handled by a 15" woofer,  made out of our unique sandwich of polystyrene and aluminium. The incredible rigidity of this unit means you get perfect piston-movement of the cone for real deep bass of the kind that only transmissionline cabinets can give you.

Leak Delta Turntable

It is important that the turntable in your high-fidelity system should be specifically designed to complement in performance and appearance the other components in your system. To this end we worked with one of Switzerland's foremost turntable specialists to create the Leak Turntable.

It is a dynamically balanced turntable which weighs over half a stone, eliminating the distortions that occur in lighter turntables due to internal vibrations.

The chromium plated pick-up arm is so sensitive that it can be affected by the infinitesimally centrifugal force it creates as it moves towards the centre of the record. We compensate for this with a bias compensator utilising a minute counterbalance supported on nylon thread. The turntable also has a viscously damped pick-up cueing device. In spite of this precision the Leak turntable is, like all the finest machines, simple to operate and maintain. The speed of the turntable is infinitely variable between 30 rpm and 86 rpm.

The very silent 4-pole motor is spring mounted onto a rigid steel baseplate. The power is transmitted from the conical motor shaft to the turntable by a ruber covered idler wheel. The speed is changed by moving the idler wheel on the motor shaft.

Leak Delta 30

The Delta Amplifiers inherit some of the well accepted characteristics of previous Leak models, e.g. plug-in printed circuit boards. Uprating circuitry, heat sinking and fusing has led to significant performance improvements, particularly under high duty conditions.

There are four plug-in boards:
Two identical preamplifiers (left and right);
Two identical power amplifiers (left and right0
The power transistors, transformer and other power supply components are mounted on the chassis.
Due to the similarity of construction and circuitry between the Delta 30 and Delta 70, both units are incorporated any differences.
 Circuit description
Power Amplifier -  The output transistors and temperature compensation diodes are mounted on the heat sink, the remainder of the circuitry being located on the power amplifier P.C. boards. Power transistors are insulated electrically from the chassis by mica washers.
Quiescent current is measured by removing the appropriate HT fuse, and inserting a current meter. The current is adjusted by P5 and should be approximately 40 mA.
The amplifier D.C. output voltage (pin D on power amp board) should be +23 V with an HT supply of +48 V. This voltage is set by fixed circuit components, and significant deviation of this "midpoint" voltage indicates component failure, not necessarily an output transistor.
Full output for each channel is realised with 11 V RMS across an 8 ohm load.
Pre-Amplifiers
The P.C. contains tone control circuitry (excluding potentiometers) R1AA  equalisation for disc input, filter components, and appropriate amplification for all inputs.
With all inputs short circuit, volume control maximum, other controls level, noise output voltages should be less than the following: 7-5 mV on Tuner and Replay,  24 mV on other inputs
The sensitivities for each input to provide full output are indicated in the specifications (1 kHz sine wave). The corresponding output from the preamplifier, measured at the tape sockets is: phono socket output 400 mV approx. DIN output 40 mV approx.

Leak Point One Stereo

Leak "Point One Stereo" (circa 1958)
Effectively a stereo version of the Varislope III, but with the Varislope circuit removed. Bass and treble circuit is the Baxandall circuit. Four EF86 valves are used - two for each channel.

The Point One Stereo pre-amplifier is designed specifically for use with the Stereo 20 or Stereo 50 power amplifiers, though it may also be used with any combination of two Leak monaural power amplifiers ( TL/12, TL/10, TL/12 PLUS, TL/25 PLUS,  TL/50 PLUS)

"The Point One Stereo pre-amplifier is probably the most comprehensive unit in existence covering every refinement for stereo tape, disc and radio plus monaural amplification for any form of input signal … it is difficult to think of any additional requirement that one would ever wish. The equipment performs with the high performance always associated with the tradition of Leak equpment. It is a fine example of design and construction, and the pre-amplifiers can be used with any other leak main amplifiers. How the pre-amplifier can be sold for as little as £21 can be answered only by Harold Leak …  Summing up, therefore, one can highly recommend the Leak stereo system for use with any current monaural or stereo input whether it be from pickup, tape, radio or microphone."

The current is adjusted by P% and should be approximately 40mA.
The amplifier D.C. output voltage (pin D on power amp board) should be +37 V with an HT supply of +75 V. This voltage is set by fixed circuit components, and significant deviation of this "midpoint" voltage indicates component failure, not necessarily an output transistor.
Full output for each channel is realised with 16 - 7 V RMS across an 8 ohm load.

Pre-Amplifiers
The P.C. contains tone control circuitry (excluding potentiometers) R1AA equalisation for disc input, filter components, and appropriate amplification for all inputs.
With all inputs short circuit, volume control maximum, other controls level, noise output voltages should be less than the following: 7-5 mV on Tuner and Replay, 22 mV on other inputs
The sensitivities for each input to provide full output are indicated in the specifications (1 kHz sine wave). The corresponding output from the preamplifier, measured at the tape sockets is: phono socket output 400 mV approx. DIN output 40 mV approx.
