What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

JVC KD-55 cassette tape deck

Stereo Cassette Deck

This model is the best buy in JVC's line of high-performing hi-fi cassette decks. Its basic parameters are impressive: Frequency Response from 30 to 16,000 Hz with Chrome, wow/flutter of 0,15% (DIN 45 500) and Signal-to-Noise Ratio of better than 56 dB (ANRS off). If you're shopping for a medium-priced, high-performance deck, the KD-55 is a likely candidate for your stereo system.

Accurate Tape Transport

Like more expensive JVC cassette decks, the KD-55 employs a precision frequency generator (FG) servomotor to drive its capstan and reels in the advanced JVC drive configuration. The FG motor is renowned for its rotational accuracy independent of temperature changes, and simplified and advanced system has dramatically improved the stability and reliability of JVC cassette decks. Other KD-55 features to reduce wow and flutter include a large 80 mm -in-diameter dynamically balanced fly-wheel and a capstan shaft precision ground to a roundness of 0,1 µ.

Flattest Response from Any Tape

To solve the problem caused by improper bias and equalization, JVC has equipped the KD-55 with two 3-positioned tape switches - one for bias setting and the other for equalization. By properly adjusting these switches, you can get a natural and flat response from any type of tape, whether you prefer ferric, chrome or ferrochrome types. Another JVC feature included in the medium-priced KD-55 is a Recording Equalizer Switch which allows you to fine-adjust the high frequency response of your deck to compensate for variable tape sensitivities.

Easy One-Touch Recording Level Setting

You can set recording levels simply by pushing the Record button. On decks without this facility, you would have to push the Pause button and then the Record and Play buttons together

Features for Wider Dynamic Range

Super ANRS (Automatic Noise Reduction System) is a JVC exclusive that makes tape hiss virtually inaudible. And in addition to eliminating high-frequency noises during "silent" periods, the Super ANRS expands your deck's high-frequency dynamic range; high hats and tambourines, for example, won't sound cramped or distorted. Also, because the Super ANRS circuit is contained in an IC (Integrated Circuit), its long-term reliability is assured. Indeed, with the JVC combination of Super ANRS, a 5-LED Peak Indicator and large VU meters, you can produce undistorted, professional quality recordings instantly.

Unparalleled Ease of Operation

Three features dramatically enhance the ease of operation of the KD-55. one is the JVC-exclusive Gear/Oil-Damped Cassette Lid; it assures smooth, noise-less lid movement. The second is the unique Automatic Input Selector. With it selection priority is given first to Mic, then DIN and then Line inputs; you enjoy recording of a high Signal-to-Noise Ratio. Finally, the Output Volume Control lets you adjust the deck's output level with that of a tuner, etc.

JVC KD-21D cassette tape deck

This easy-to-afford KD-21D shares many of the features of other, more expensive JVC decks. Among its noteworthy features are the 5-LED Peak Indicator, Timer Standby Facility, Dual-Ball Cassette Hold System.

Every circuit and every control is designed for the cleanest, most musical recording and playback.

The KD-21D thus offers high-quality specifications such as 56 dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio to guarantee long years of musical enjoyment. Add this high-performance deck to your present audio system to make it complete.

Dolby Noise Reduction

If you're familiar with tape recording, so must you be with this useful feature. With it switched in, you hardly notice hiss - the objectionable intruder inherent to tape recording. Unless effectively reduced, tape hiss is particularly more annoying during soft musical passages. And it's a problem no matter what type of tape you use. With the Dolby in the KD-21D, hiss noise is reduced by as much as 5 dB at 1 kHz and 10 dB above 5 kHz. Pulsive peaks are tamed to render high-frequency signals sound free from distortion and all forms of high-frequency noise.

JVC use the Dolby in a compact IC with components inside directly coupled. Its improved transient response means crisp reproduction, while dependability and stability are impeccable.

Considerations for Wider Dynamic Range

If a signal is clipped and distorted anywhere along the way from a deck's input to output, there's no way to restore it entirely to its original quality. Therefore, JVC have taken every consideration in the KD-21D to widen dynamic range and prevent distortion and clipping. There are, for example, a separate low-distortion amp for mics in an advanced 2-stage, direct-coupled NPN transistor ; a Mic/Line input selector that permits line inputs to go straight to the recording amp without adding distortion of its own; two 2-position Bias and Equalizer switches to make most of every tape on the market; and more.

Useful Recording Aids

These large VU meters enhance visibility to  help you make correct level adjustments. Together with the JVC's 5-LED Peak Indicator, they help you make clean tape recordings every time. As on the more expensive JVC models, our KD-21D is equipped with the Full Automatic Stop Mechanism to eliminate worry about stretched tapes or an overheated motor. A light in the tape well permits you to keep a close watch on the cassette at all times.

JVC KD-10 cassette deck

The KD-10 is priced even lower than other JVC decks, but still includes the following features; 5-LED Peak Indicator, a Timer Standby Facility, Automatic Input Selector, JVC's electronic governor motor and more. In line with other, more expensive decks, performance parameters - such as a high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (56 dB from peak level, weighted) - guarantee long years of musical enjoyment. The KD-10 is a high value, high performance deck at a budget cost.

New Circuity

JVC's KD-10 includes an IC sized Dolby circuit to reduce annoying tape hiss. This IC form circuit is direct coupled, a highly precise configuration which makes for excellent transient characteristics. Likewise, the KD-10's microphone amp is of an advanced 2-stage direct-coupled design in low-noise IC form.  And to improve its Signal-to-Noise Ratio and dynamic range, the amp is separate from the line input. The result; high record amp linearity and only negligible distortion of even high-frequency signals.

Designed for Wide Dynamic Range Recording

Similar to more expensive JVC decks, the KD-10 has an Automatic Mic/Line Input to help lessen distortion and to expand dynamic range. Three-positioned Bias and Equalization switches allow the KD-10 to accept any type of tape on the market. And with the added assistance of JVC's 5-LED Peak Indicator and new and large VU meters (which even compensate for temperature changes) you can create true-to-life recording with a wide dynamic range

Convenience Features

A reed-type fully-automatic stop mechanism protects tapes and pinch roller from disfiguration. It also prevents the deterioration of wow and flutter with the passage of time. And speaking of time, the KD-10 includes a Timer Standby mechanism which lets you record unattended or awake to music. You can also make direct mode changes without going through Stop. The JVC Gear Oil-Damped Cassette Lid and more

Accurate Tape Transport

Tapes are unspooted by a precision-finished capstan (ground to a roundness of 01 µ), which is coupled to a large, dynamically balanced, 80 mm flywheel, driven by a precision ground belt. It contributes to the low wow/flutter.

JVC XL-Z1010NT CD player

Compact Disc Player - K2Interface. Revealing possibilities at the source

Changing the digital code on a CD into music requires that a digital-to-analog converter choose 1 of 65,536 possibilities every 1/44,100th of a second.

It's commonly assumed that digital signal is composed of 1's and 0's, each represented by the presence or absence of a square-shaped pulse. But the fact of the matter is, a digital signal contains ripple - a type of distortion that changes the shape of a waveform - and jitter, components that move the timing of a pulse forward or behind.

These "non-Code" components can result in a sound that differs from the intent of the digital source. The K2 interface solves this problem by completely regenerating the digital signal. At the heart of the K2 interface is essentially an ultra-high-speed camera with a shutter speed of 20 nanoseconds (20 billionths of a second). Based on these quick snap-shots, it recreates the digital signal as a perfect square wave.

Providing a perfect signal to the D/A converter allows for accurate reproduction of all the nuances such as sound staging and depth. As a matter of fact, in many ways both frequency range and dynamic range are expended. High frequencies sound clearer. There is a heightened sense of the power in the mid-to-low-frequency range.

Music seems to acquire more depth and width, providing clear images of instruments and voices. Overall, sound is smoother and more natural across the audio spectrum.

Precision D/A Converter System Using Four D/A Units.

The XL-Z1010TN features two D/A converter units for each channel - four in all. There is a 16-bit converter for the most significant bits and a 2-bit converter for the two least significant bits. Since the least significant bits have greatest bearing on the sound quality at low level, JVC uses an elaborate discrete D/A converter system for these bits to ensure higher precision. All four converters operate with 18 bits "full Time" whether the level is high or low. Our "quadruple full-time linear 18-bit combination D/A converter" allows you to enjoy digital sound at its most delicate and dynamic.

JVC AX-Z1010TN amplifier

Digital Pure-A. New possibilities for class-A

There's no doubt an amplifier operating in class-A mode provides lower distortion and cleaner sound than those in popular class-B or class-AB. Their inefficiency, however, makes class-A amplifiers require elaborate heat sinking, and still the amps waste much of their power in the form of heat. This results in inflated cost and relatively low power output. But to enjoy the dynamic sound of digital programs, you need a lot of power.

How to combine the low-distortion sound of class-A with efficiency and power demended by digital audio?

Enter the Digital Pure-A Type II

JVC has the solution - the Digital Pure-A Type II circuit featured in the Ax-Z1010TN "Digital" Integrated Amplifier. This ingenious design takes the advantage of the fact that digital signals can be stored in memory temporarily without changing their frequency response or phase response.

In the Digital Pure-A Type II, digital signals fed directly from digital equipment are split into two: the main signal and the "prediction" signal.

The main signal is sent to a time base processor where it's stored in memory for a fraction of a second before it goes to the D/A converter. The prediction signal is sent to the bias circuit to optimize bias applied to the power transistors depending on dynamics of the upcoming signal. What you get out of this is low-distortion class-A sound with high efficiency and high power.

The AX-Z1010TN is a "Digital" integrated amplifier incorporating a D/A converter system complete with the K2 interface, 8-times oversampling and quadruple D/A converters.

And the amp features a special design for analog programs too - Opt Super-A, another JVC exclusive combining low distortion and high efficiency.

JVC DD-7 cassette-deck

Direct-Drive Cassette Deck DD-7 features:

Quartz-lock, direct-drive mechanism with Pulse Servo motor

Three-head configuration - Monitor capability with the X-cut SA combination Rec/Play head and extended highs

Two-colour digital fluorescent level meters - Choose peak-hold or VU modes

All-DC amp configuration = Low noise and sonic clarity

Full-logic control  - Foolproof operation and touch control

Super ANRS and Dolby-B compatible ANRS

Direct-drive system built around the JVC Quartz-lock Pulse Servo motor

Simple is better when it comes to tape transport design. The proof is in the figures - wow and flutter is only 0,06% (DIN 45 500). Our Pulse Servo motor takes a lot of the credit, being immune to cogging, voltage fluctuations, and changes in temperature and humidity. Speed is quartz-locked to assure unblemished accuracy over the years.

Three-head design with JVC exclusive SA heads

The material used in our SA (Sen-Alloy) heads is capable of providing optimum results from any tape, particularly metal tape. Furthermore, we've given the Play head a narrow 1-micron gap for efficiency and a contour-free surface for extended bass, while the Rec head has a wider 4-micron gap to pick up high frequencies without loss. Our X-cut Rec and Play heads - separate but combined in a single casing - are complemented by our two-gap erase head, also of SA.

Monitor peak or VU level depending on your needs.

Different recording situations require different recording levels. That's why we/ve equipped the DD-7 with meters having selectable modes - peak-hold reading or VU.

Recording EQ: For a flat high-frequency response

The Rec EQ control allows the deck to tune itself to any tape for flat response to 15 kHz and beyond and the separate playback head lets you confirm this as you are actually making recordings.

Lockable timer standby mechanism ends erroneous erasure

The timer standby is locked during power outage; it can't be nudged to Rec to prevent accidental erasure

Memory auto rewind: Both atop and play modes.

This is a convenience feature that you shouldn't be without. It lets you continuously repeat the tape from beginning end (or from 999-indexed portion to end), or rewind the tape at the end of play.

JVC DD-5 cassette deck

Direct-Drive Cassette Deck

Direct-drive Pulse Servo motor

Newly-designed low-impedance SA head for recording/play

Two-colour digital fluorescent level meters - responsive peak reading meters

Two-motor full-logic tape transport

Super ANRS, ANRS/Dolby-B NR, Auto Rewind Play/Stop

JVC has not reserved our latest technological achievement - direct drive - for just our very top-of-the-line models. The DD-5 is a case in point, it uses the JVC-exclusive Pulse Servomotor and direct-drive tape transport for full reliability and wow/flutter of only 0,065 % (DIN 45 500) - one of the lowest figures ever achieved in a consumer cassette deck. Yet, one look at the DD-5 will show you many other features, like full-logic control with light-touch buttons, two-colour digital fluorescent level meters, and an SA head for metal-tape capability.

Direct-drive system features the JVC-designed and -manufactured Pulse Servo motor.

Unlike most cassette decks (and just about every other cassette deck in this price range), the DD-5 is endowed with a direct-drive motor for capstan drive. Eliminated are all the cams, belts, pulleys, etc., that can generate speed variations that are passed on to the tape. That's why the wow/flutter of of the DD-5 is amazingly only 0,065%. Our own top-of-the-line DD-9 is the only consumer deck in existence that can boast of a lower figure. But, direct-drive alone can't assure low wow and flutter; it look a special motor design to end cogging, our own Pulse Servo design.

Low-impedance SA head for improved performance

The new SA head, specially designed for the DD-5, features double the normal number of Sen-Alloy laminates (twelve in all) and 1,5 times thicker core wires. These are the features that afford the SA head its low impedance. It guarantees improved high-frequency performance since fewer addy currents are generated due to the finer laminates. Low-frequency distortion is reduced because of lower DC resistance.

Two-colour digital fluorescent level meters; Easy readability for optimum record levels.

Our fluorescent level meters are far more accurate and far more responsive than common mechanical VU meters.

Two-motor full-logic; Smooth operation with fingertip ease.

Like the finest decks available, the DD-5 has a two-motor transport that allows us to endow it with light-touch full-logic control so that function buttons may be operated in any order; there's no possibility of tape damage thanks to the logic system.

Lockable timer standby mechanism; for unattended recording

The DD-5 not only has a timer standby switch for unattended recording (or playing) but it also has an interlock that prevents the timer standby Rec mechanism from being switched an accidentally during power outage, to avoid inadvertent recording (or erasing)
