What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Phase Linear 8000 turntable

Model 8000 Series Two Linear Motor Turntable

No other turntable can match the Phase 8000, because no other turntable has such advanced motors. You can't buy a quieter turntable. Or one with as low wow and flutter. Or one that tracks better.

The Phase 8000's tangential tracking tone arm keeps the stylus in perfect 90° tangent with the grooves. It's the same way the master disc was cut, so the motion of your stylus is identical to the cutterhead stylus. There's absolutely no tracking distortion. No crosstalk. No skating force that can actually re-cut your grooves.

New Linear Motor Eliminates Mechanical Linkage

Other manufacturers have tried to move tangential tone arms with worm gears. Belts. Rollers. All with the same sad result; Mechanical connections pass on the noise and vibration of the motor. The Phase 8000 solves this problem with an ingenious Linear Motor. The tone arm base is a permanently magnetized armature that glides along guide bars above electro-magnetic coils. The arm moves by direct induction - not mechanical connection. So there's virtually no noise. Inside the tonearm, an opto-electric detector cell senses the slightest tracking error, and instantly sends correcting signals to keep the arm on track.

The tangential Biotracer tonearm

The Sony PS-X800 is the first turntable to combine the advantages of tangetial tracking with the low-frequency performance of a stable tonearm foundation. Like other straight-line tracking turntables, the X800 uses a tonearm mounted on a moving platform. However, unlike any other tangetial arm in the world, the tonearm of the X800 incorporates Sony's innovative Biotracer design.

The Biotracer's automated Motional Feedback (MFB) system constantly senses and corrects for tonearm vibration. For this reason, the arm provides all the advantages of a solid foundation: full-bodied, detailed low frequencies. And you get the reduced distortion, and improved stereo separation associated with tangential tonearms.

the Biotracer tonearm of the PS-X800 is the first design to fulfill the promise of straight-line tracking. Quite clearly, the combination of the Biotracer tonearm and the tangential configuaration results in a joyful musical experiance.

Uni-Motion design for superior precision

He tangential Biotracer arm provides still more benefits. Other straight-line tracking arms require some slight tracking error to keep the arm moving forward. These tonearms are in a constant state of correcting tracking error. In contrast, the PS-X800 incorporates Uni-Motion design. Uni-Motion brings the tonearm slowly towards the center of the record, even when no tracking error is detected. As a result, the tangetntial Biotracer maintains superior groove tangency. Phase differences between the stereo channels are dramatically reduced. This results in a stable stereo image, with outstanding spatial characteristics.

As a final measure of precision, the vertical tonearm bearings, so important to tonearm function, are made to extremely close dimensional tolerances. Situated in Sony's long-span pivot, they provide the final assurance of exquisite performance.

The PS-X800, with its Biotracer tonearm and straight-line tracking displays exceptionally lower distortion, extraordinary stereo separation and greatly improved reproduction of the inner grooves of all records,  most important, the Biotracer tonearm is unique in providing the solid, vibration-free tonearm base necessary for superior music reproduction.

JVC L-E5 turntable

Ultimate Tracking Accuracy Combined with Full-Feature Convenience

JVC's L-E5 Linear Tracking Turntable is a masterpiece of miniaturization. Not only were our designers able to reduce outisde dimensions to little more than that of a record jacket (it's only 34 cm wide) but they were able to incorporate the most advanced and most accurate record tracking system in existence into its design. This actually contributed to the clean lines and unostentatious controls that make the L-E5 as much a pleasure to see as to hear.

Linear tracking eliminates tracking error, reduces distortion and produces clear sonic images.

The grooves in a phonograph record are the result of a parallel-tracking stuido cutting lathe and that's the way the tonearm of the :-E5 plays them back for yopu. Tracking error is eliminated and with it music marring distortion, intermodulation, crosstalk and poor separation. In the L-E5, a computer aided Electro Dynamic Servo system and a no-contact optical sensor keep the tonearm 90° tangential to the record groove from beginning to end of play.

Short low-mass straight aluminum tonearm with integrated dual-magnet cartridge.

The tonearm of the L-E5 is a studey in simplicity, its low-mass design reduces arm resonance and there is no need for the complex anti-skating compensation devices required by standard pivoted-tonearm designs. JVC's New Gimbal Support for the tonearm assures high sensitivity.

All tonearm movements are computer controlled via convenient front-edge controls.

The L-E5 is a fully automatic turntable with microcomputer controlled functions - lead-in, cue, return, or repeat. All controls are up front, outside the closed dust cover including the buttons that move the tonearm left and right for total hands-off control.

The coreless DC servo motor and JVC FG Super Servo.

Naturally the golden combination of two JVC technologies are employed to assure absolutely stable, cog-free speed accuracy.

Revox B 791 turntable

With the B791 (and B795) turntables, tangential tracking has been brought to the point of perfection. While conventional reproduction systems offer good compromises, Revox solves some problems that were once thought unsolvable. Disadvantages resulting from the opposing physical forces inherent in disc reproduction have been overcome by significant engineering breakthroughs. New solutions have made Revox the leader in turntable technology.

Pivoting Tonearm Module

The revox concept of a pivoting tonearm module, together with the ultra-short tangential tonearm, represents a successful synthesis of technical innovation and mechanical perfection. In this exclusive design the usual resonance problems of tubular tonearms have been eliminated and the threat of damage to either disc or cartridge stylus has become a thing of the past.

An electronic servo control keeps the stylus tracking precisely in the center of the record groove, thus avoiding playback distortions. Record warps and eccentricities are no problem. The result is a light, delicate tracking of your valuable discs from the first groove to the last.

Quartz-Crystal for Constant Speed

Developed and manufactured by Revox, the B791 (and B795) motor is Quartz controlled and drives the plater directly. Therefore,, use of a constant dust-removing device will not alter the locked-in speed. On the B791 the speed can be changed from -9,9% to +9,9% in precise o,1% steps, with a digital display showing the Variation. This allows the audiophile to obtain unlimited nuances for special effects, and also facilitates quick tuning of a record to a musical instrument.

Changing Cartridges

With Revox turntables you are not limited to the use of one cartridge. Four premium cartridges are available, factory installed and optimally adjusted. Of course you can also install practically any other cartridge that follows the international mounting norms.

Advanced Technology, Simple Operation

Ease of operation is practically a revox trademark, and here it begins with automatic cleaning of the stylus tip. A built-in light aids in finding specifica musical selections. All functions are activated by front panel buttons which may be operated even with the dust cover closed. With the development of the B791 (and B795), revox is once again leading the way. Precision, advanced technology, long-term reliability, and intelligent design are hallmarks of superiority.

Sony PS-X555ES turntable

The linear tracking tonearm is a major technological achievement in turntable design that has recently become both highly successful and quite popular. The reason for its nearly universal appeal is simple - it plays records exactly as they were originally cut, thereby eliminating tracking error, and improving both stereo separation and overall sonic fidelity. Unfortunately, despite its benefits, the linear tracking tonearm alos produces an unwanted (and often audible) side effect - resonance. The Sony PS-X555ES uses microcomputer technology to control resonance.

The Problem of Low Frequency Resonance
A conventional tonearm pivots at a stable, reinforced point. By contrast, the linear tracking tonearm moves along the groove towards the center of the disc as it plays. This means that it lacks a rock-solid foundation. Since this is the key to fighting the low-frequency resonance that's fairly common during disc playback, linear tracking tonearms are prone to this type of distortion.
Resonance can actually be quite disturbing in a listaning situation - its manifestations include distortion, rumble, howl, and an overall dulling of the musics impact. It's a serious problem with all linear tracking turntables - except those equipped with Sony's unique Biotracer tonearm. The Sony Biotracer is the first - and to date, the only - linear tracking tonearm that effectively combats the effects of low-frequency resonance.

Biotracer Technology for Improved Performance
How  does the PS-X555ES control resonance? It thinks. The Biotracer tonearm of the PS-X555ES is a dynamic device that is constantly driven by two microcomputer controlled motors. When the microcomputer senses any variation from the correct tonearm position, it instantly alerts the motors 9one for horizontal motion, one for vertical), and instructs then to adjust the tonearm's motion. Not only does this ingenious system relieve resonance problems associated with the linear tracking design, it also helps combat distortion caused by warps and eccentricities in the disc itself. And previously annoying imperfections such as tonearm skating and improper stylus force adjustments are automatically corrected as well.
The Biotracer Supports Freedom of Choice
And the Biotracer does still more. With most turntables, your choice of cartridges is greatly limited - the tonearm accepts only a narrow range of cartridge mass and compliance. Butthat's not the case with the Biotracer. Because it is so effective in overcoming low-frequency resonance, the Biotracer permits you to install just about any cartridge you like. With most turntables, the choice of cartridge must be based on the equipment - with the PS-X555ES, you can select your cartridge according to its sonic characteristics.

Incorporates Many Other Design Innovations
Furthermore, all the special technology that's made Sony turntables so popular is also found on the PS-X555ES. That includes our Brushless Slotless (BSL) motor, recognized for its accuracy and reliability. Plus, Sony's quartz lock direct drive with magnedisc servocontrol ensures rotational precision. And height-adjustable gel-filled feet, combined with Sony's non-resonant SBMC base, resist acoustic feedback.
Naturally, all the convenience and performance features that have made the linear tracking design so popular are included in the PS-X555ES. For example, you can control the movement of the tonearm without ever raising the dust cover, and without risking damage to the record or the stylus - cueing and indexing are accomplished with front-panel feather-touch controls.

Pioneer PL-L800

Pioneer Tangential Tracking
The most accurate way of playing a record is with a tone arm that remains always tangent to the record groove, since this is how the groove was cut. Only a tangential tracking arm can do this.
A tangential tracking arm, when properly designed, engineered and manufactured, eliminates skating force and lateral tracking error, along with the excessive, often irregular record wear they cause. At Pioneer, we have successfully devolped just such a tangential tone arm. It uses a non-contact linear motor for smooth, vibration-free, lateral movement.
Compare the Pioneer tangential-tracking tone arm to competing versions. Others depend on vibration-prone motors driving rollers, worm screws or pulleys. In terms of performance, there's simply no comparison.
Four advantages of tangential-tracking tone arms
1 - Lateral tracking error, for all practical purposes, remains zero throughout play. Thus, intermodulation distortion is avoided.
2 - There is no inward skating force, making an anti-skating system unnecessary.
3 - Lateral balnced  is ideal
4 - The arm can be short, thus reducing effective mass.

Technics SL-5

Technics new linear-tracking SL-5. with plug-in cartridge capability made affordable. Just place the record on the platter, close the cover and press start. Everything else is automatic, including the pleasure.
Utilizing the same linear-tracking concept featured in the renowned Technics SL-10 and SL-15. technics now introduces both the album-sized SL-5 and the compact SL-DL5. each of these two new models offers you the same incredible performance and uncanny accuracy of technics linear-tracking at prices equal to many of today's conventional turntables.
Both feature Technics plug-in cartridge system, so installation is always easy, exact and precise. Best of all, the music won't be distorted by improper mounting.
This model also offers technics direct-drive motor. Dynamically balanced tonearm with gimbal suspension. Aluminum die-cast platter. Tonearm position indicator LED and scale to show the precise location of the tonearm on the record. Abuilt-in muting circuit to eliminate "cliks" and "pops" when the stylus makes contact with the record surface. Plus convenient front panel controls.
Technics Linear Tracking and How it Differs
The best testimony for the linear tracking concept is its use in mastering lathes. Record manufactures use linear tracking to meke records, so it's obvious that it is the best method available to play them back. The point is simple, linear tracking tonearms play the records ezactly as they were originally cut. Therefore, tracking error is completely non-existent, and distortion becomes a notion with meaning only on the test bench. So if linear tracking arms share  these attributes, why should you choose technics?
One reason is the dynamic balance system - it makes certain that tracking force is always precise and accurate. Plus, Technics incorporates a very sophisticated optoelectronic deflection angle detection system, governed by microcomputer and constantly monitored.  You can therefore be sure that the stylus is always at the precisely correct angle to the grooves. A potential source of inaccuracy and distortion is thus removed. And we designed the tonearm system with painstaking attention to detail - a gimbal suspension system increases sensitivity, and a low-friction slide bearing reduces vibration and assures precise tonearm transport.
 Other Valuable Features.
Small details can make a big difference in reliability, convenience, and reproduced sound quality. That's why we've equipped the SL-6 with these valuable additional features:

Technics SL-6

No conventional turntable delivers the accuracy and control of this one. Technics SL-6  programmable Linear Tracking Turntable. The problem with a conventional turntable tonearm is that it ares across the record surface. So it is capable of true accuracy at only two points in its arc. Where the stylus is precisely aligned with the record groove.
Other Valuable Features.
Small details can make a big difference in reliability, convenience, and reproduced sound quality. That's why we've equipped the SL-6 with these valuable additional features:
30 cm (12") diameter aluminum die-cast platter
Full cycle detection FG servo mechanism
Built-in 45 rpm adaptor
Tonearm position indicator LED and scale
All front panel  controls with electronic soft-touch switch
Isolator feet
Manual speed selection possible for playing nonstandard discs

Turntable/tape deck synchronized play capability.
The Technics SL-6 Linear Tracking Turntable goes beyond that . It actually duplicates the straight-line motion of the cutting arm that originally mastered the record. This enables the Technics SL-6 to deliver true accuracy at every point on the record. First note to last. There is none of the tracking error, skating force error or distortion that accompanies a traditional tonearm.
And the SL-6 ensures this accuracy with some outstanding technological advances. Including a microcomputer controlled system that constantly monitors the stylus-to-groove angle and automatically makes corrections.
But linear tracking is just the beginning. There's the precise control you get with the Technics random access programmable microcomputer. At the touch of a button, you can set the SL-6 to play any selections you want, in any order. You can even repeat or skip selections.
There are still more features that help the Technics SL-6 perform so impeccably. A precision direct-drive motor . Sensors that automatically select the correct playing speed.
Our patented P-Mount plug-in cartridge system delivers optimum tonearm/cartridge compatibility along with simplified about the size of a record jacket.
Accuracy, control and musical pleasure beyond the conventional. The Technics SL-6 programmable Linear Tracking Turntable. Just one of the sophisticated and "inteligent" turntables from Technics.
 Superb Basic Performance
Through direct drive. Technics offers you uncompromising rotational precision and reliability. Our integral rotor-platter design eliminates extra parts and assures stable operation, since the turntable platter is part of the direct drive motor itself. You can hear this superior performance for yourself. You can also confirm it with the specs.

The Technics linear tracking tonearm enjoys a number of advantages, the most important of which is an optoelectronic deflection angle detection system located near the cartridge (not at the rear end of the tonearm). This constantly monitors stylus-to-groove angle and sends this vital data to the microcomputer (which makes tiny corrections as necessary). The tonearm's gimbal suspension system increases sensitivity. A low-friction slide bearing reduces vibration and assures precise tonearm support. Furthermore the tonearm is dynamically balanced, so it doesn't depend on gravity alone to maintain correct tracking force. This system also improves the tonearm's ability to track warped records.
 Automatic Convenience
With the SL-6 the turntable takes care of everything, including record size and speed selection for all standard discs. Also the SL-6 is virtually foolproof. You can't set the tonearm down on an empty platter. You never even touch the tonearm, so the cartridge, stylus, and grooves are safe from accidents and mishandling.

Designed for Today's Living Space.
Whether you have a spacious loft or a studio apartment, you'll appreciate the way the SL-6 fits where other turntables won't in fact, you can't make a turntable significantly smaller than this because it must be at least 12'' wide to properly accommodate an LP. compact size isn't the only thing that makes the SL-6 easy to install and easy to live with. For one thing, the tonearm is dynamically balanced so you don't need the perfectly level surface that is required for a statically balanced design.
Also the base of the SL-6 is made of TNRC, a nonresonant compound damps resonances, and helps avoid acoustic feedback or howling.  In other words the turntable and tonearm are well isolated from the outside. Therefore, the cartridge can retrieve maximum information from the record grooves, with a minimum of interference.
 Plug-in Cartridge Connector
If you've had much experience using a conventional tonearm, then you know how much trouble it is to mount and change cartridges.
Technics developed the plug-in connector system to eliminate this difficulty, and improve performance at the same time. To use a plug-in connector cartridge, you simply plug it into the end of the tonearm and surface it with a single screw.  There's no headshell, no tiny lead wires, and no adjustments of any kind. Not even tracking force. Mechanical and electrical connection is precise and tonearm-cartridge matching is perfect because everything is standardized by Technics
