What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Heathkit AA-1800 power amplifier

New Higher-Power pro-Series Amplifier - the most powerful Heathkit amp ever.
Heath Company helped pioneer the field of high-power amplifeiers. Now, advances in high-power output devices, new design technology and extensive listening tests make the Heathkit AA-1800  Pro-Series Audio Amplifier one of the best high-power amps available. The wider dynamic range achieved by new recording techniques require power and headroom to reproduce the full sound spectrum, without clipping peaks. People who listen to the AA-1800 find accurate, clearly defined music - at a wallet-pleasing price.
From the power cords to the speaker outputs, more value is built into the AA-1800. a wire-frame chassis, similar to those used in computers, makes the AA-1800 a more durable unit in a smaller package, with excellent ventilation. This new chassis simplifies the easy 24-hour kitbuilding experience, too. Two line cords with remote AC switching relieve your preamp from the need to switch high currents. Convection cooling means no fans and quieter operation. Individually fused power supply lines, along with rugged output devices, eliminate electronic dissipation limiters - which can cause tweeter-damaging clicks and pops. LEDs for each channel indicate full easy access.
Complete speaker  protection includes a speaker turn-on delay - which keeps power-up and power-down transients away from the speakers. In fact, the AA-1800's speaker protection system is so efective, we've applied for a patent.
Thermal circuit breakers protect the system from excessive heat.
Designed in the striking pro-Series style, the AA-1800 can be mounted in any EIA Standard 19-inch rack, such as the AE-1705 Pro-Series Rack. Large side handles are provided for easy rack mount installation.

Heathkit AA-1600 power amplifier

High-Performance Rack-Mount Stereo Power Amplifier
The AA-1600 is the first amplifier in our new series of professional-style rack-mount stereo components. Other products in the series include the AD-1701 Graphic Indicator, the AJ-1600 AM/FM Digital Tuner, and the AP-a800 Deluxe Stereo Preamplifier. In performance, specifications and sound reproduction, these products are designed to rank with the finest stereo components available anywhere.
The AA-1600 reproduces the entire musical spectrum with a clarity and definition that make it an excellent choice for use with the most demanding speaker systems. Hhum and noise are a full 100 dB down, so music springs forth from a background of total silence. Transient Intermodulation Distortion, a recently discovered form of amplifier distortion which tends to "muddy" the sound, is so low (less than 0,05%) we're one of the few manufacturers to specify it. This low T.I.M. contributes to clean, well-defined sound especially at the high end of the frequency spectrum. Fused B+ and B- power supply lines for each channel, along with especially rugged output devices, eliminate the need for dissipation limiters which can cause tweeter-damaging clicks and pops from faalse triggering.
Of course, there's complete speaker and circuit protection, including speaker turn-on delay and a thermal circuit breaker.
To assure performance to our superior specifications, the amplifier and power supply circuit boards are supplied fully assembled, tested and adjusted. Minimal point-to-point wiring and a clean, opem chassis layout contribute to easy building. The AA-1600 is designed for mounting in a standard EIA equipment rack, or for installation in the AEA-1800-1 accessory cabinet. The AA-1600 is one of the finest amplifiers Heath has ever designed, and an easy and enjoyable kitbuilding experience too. Make it a part of your music system now.

Heathkit AR-1515

From its half-inch tall LED frequency readouts to its extraordinarily low distortion, the Heathkit AR-1515 is the finest receiver heath has ever designed.
The Ar-1515's digital Readout is far more accurate thas dial-type tuning. Simply tune to the exact frequency you want. Signal-strength and center-channel meters then help you "zero in" on the strongest signal and lowestFM distortion. There's even an oscilloscope output to monitor multipath distortion.
The amplifier section meets the same high standards. That extra margin of performance assures clean, wide-range sound without audible strain or struggle on even the most complex musical passages. And you'll hear the music over a background of silence - hum and noise are 65 dB below full output in phono and 80 dB below full output on high-level sources.

The amplifier section is also unmatched in convenience. All the frequently used controls - volume, input selector, stereo/mono switch, tuning - are on the front panel. The secondary controls are concealed behind a hinged door. Convenient indicator lights on the front panel show, the input you've selected. The digit light only when listening to AM or FM and only the necessary tuning meters are illuminated - signal-strength only for AM, signal-strength and center-tune for FM.
The bass and treble controls act primarlly at the frequency extremes to compensate for room acoustic and program deficiencies while maintaining smooth midrange response. And the AR-1515's  preamp out/amp injacks allow it to be used with any audio equalizer, such as the Heathkit AD-1305.

The AR-1515 is even easy to build. Obviously the AR-15151 is a complex and sophisticated receiver, but its well thought out, modular design and color-coded wiring harnesses simplify assembly

Due to the equalization present in Phono and Tape Head positions, the meter readings for these inputs contain a considerable amount of random low-frequency noise, most of which is sub-audible.  Such noise is due to thermal agitation in tubes and resistors, contact resistance effects in electrolitic capacitors, power line variations, etc. In evaluating noise, the audibility of its various components must be considered. The extreme input sensitivity (1 mV) of the AA-100 Tape Head input must also be borne in mind.
The actual 60 Hz hum (and harmonics) included in the readings is very  small, compared to the mostly sub-audible noise components referred to above. As a matter of fact, the AA-100 is almost completely free from hum, for practical purposes.

Schematic Heathkit AJ-41

Schematic of the Heathkit professional Stereo Tuner model AJ-41

Heathkit AJ-41

Heathkit AJ-41 Tuner has many interesting features, some of which are quite unique. The Tuner will receive monophonic AM or FM , or stereo FM. Individual meters monitor AM and FM tuning, a neon lamp is incorporated to indicate when a FM stereo signal is received. Another feature is a FM squelch circuit, which eliminates between station noise when tuning across the FM band. Cathode follower output stages provide low line impedance to avoid hum and high frequency losses in the interconnecting audio cables. With a FM stereo output, the cathode followers perform separately as left and right channel output stages; on monophonic AM or FM, the two output stages are tied together and supply the same information to both the left and right channel amplifiers of a stereo system.

Deluxe Features For Deluxe Performance. Compare the price and features of this renowned Heathkit Stereo tuner. Here is deluxe styling with luggagetan vinyl-clad steel cabinet, polished anodized trim, and refracted lighting of the big slide-rule dial, matches the Heathkit AA-100 amplifier.
Here are convenience features for easy operation, finer performance. Just flip a switch and chose FM, FM stereo,or AM listening. In addition there's an automatic stereo indicator light, built-in stereo adapter, automatic frequency control for clear, drift-free reception, adjustable FM squelch to assure complete silence while tuning, and a stereo phase control for maximum station separation, minimum distortion.
Heavy die-cast flywheels are used on the tuning controls to give smooth tuning action. A "unitized" chasis design provides for rigidity and ease of kit assembly before being incorporated into the final assembly.
Control versatility is essential to good performance from a high quality tuner. All controls are arranged to offer maximum versatility without an excessive number of knobs.
Completely separate circuits are used for the AM and FM portions of the Tuner to avoid compromising performance. The multiplex circuit is used only in the Stereo position of the Mode Selector switch. Silicon diode rectifiers are used in the power supply because of their long life, dependability, and the fact that essentially no heat is generated in this type of rectifier. A choke is used in conjunction with the silicon rectifiers to improve regulation and to minimize hum. The heavy duty, electrostatically-shielded power transformer isolates the circuitry from the power line.

For Added Convenience - there are individual AM and FM tuning meters, flywheel tuning action, built-in antennas plus external antenna connectors, a fidelity switch for normal or maximum AM fidelity; and a preassembled, prealigned front-end to insure professional performance.  Assembly takes just a couple of evenings.

The tradition of heathkit stereo receiver superiority began in 1967 with the heathkit AR-15. then in 1971 came the Ar-1500. now, it's the AR-1500A, the world's classic receiver, improved once again. Design advancements include.

Phase lock Loop (PLL) multiplex demodulator with only one simple adjustment, your assurance of maximum separation, droft-free performance and long-term stability. Simplification of the AGC circuit resulting in significant improvements in AM performance. Improved output protection for better drive capability over taday's wider range of speaker impedances.

Now Easier To Build
In redesigning the AR-1500A, special care was given to making the kit even easier to build than before. A separate check-out meter is used to check out each step as assembly progresses. Factory-installed cable connectors are another new kitbuilding aid.
 Still tops in performance.
The precedent-setting performance specifications of the AR-1500 have, of course, been retained. Conservatively rated, the Ar-1500A puts out 180 watts, 90 per channel, into 8 ohms, with both channels driven, with less than 0,25% harmonic distortion. Two computer designed five pole LC filters and the 4-gang, front end combine for an FM selectivity beter than 90 dB with 1,8 µV sensitivity. And here are some things the specs won't show you. There are outputs for two separate speaker systems, two sets of headphones, preamp output, and monitoring of FM with an ascilloscope such as the Heathkit Audio-Scope. Standard inputs - all with individual level controls. Electronically monitord amplifier overload circuitry.
