What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Akai GX-210D reel-to-reel tape deck

Three Motor Automatic Reverse Stereo Tape Deck

GX-210D features 3-motor drive mechanism includes self-lubricating Hysteresis Synchronous Motor

To match the lasting performance of the GX Head, the GX-210D is equipped with Akai's unique self-lubricating capstan motor. The installation of two oil circulating mechanisms with cellulose fibres within the interior of the motor provides long lasting, trouble-free operation. Oil circulating speed is adjusted naturally according to motor revolutions and temperature, and because shaft rotation is always smooth and stable, various mechanical troubles resulting from oil circulation suspension do not occur. Further, these unique cellulose fibres also function as filters to keep the oil clean during the circulating process, adding to the motor's epoch-making longevity. Two highly efficient outer-rotor motors for supply and take-up reel drive assure consistent and smooth tape travel and ideal starting torque.

Akai 1730D-SS reel-to-reel

4-channel / 2-channel Stereo Tape Deck

An entirely new world of sound has been created by Akai's electronics engineers who have developed a new and sophisticated line of 4-channel surround stereo equipment. Included in this line are the exciting 1730D-SS 4-channel/2-channel Stereo Tape Deck and 1730-SS 4-Channel/2-Channel Stereo Tape recorder.

With either system, you're completely surrounded in sound with four speakers, left and right in front, and left and right in the rear. This system gives you a real "sense of presence", the feeling of being exactly in the middle of a live performance. Both models are designed to be used for not only 4-channel stereo but also 2-channel stereo as well.

The 1730D-SS is perfectly matched with Akai's exclusive AA-6100 amplifier. this amplifier has 80 W music power for dynamic 4-channel stereo sound and accommodates both 4-channel and 2-channel stereo operation.

Akai's dependable 2-lever system complements the high grade parts and robust construction of this rugged 4-channel/2-channel stereo model

It is regular practice to employ mechanical control in one-motor tape decks.  Akai has long since employed this 2-lever system in our one-motor decks. When compared to an ordinary 1-lever system, because the Play/Rec and F.Fwd/Rew Levers are independent, the movable range of the levers are shorter, and operation is lighter. Also, because the F. Fwd/Rew Lever is separate, mis-operation is minimized. Further, because of the mechanical structure of this control system, other parts are not unfavourably influenced and mechanism endurance is extended. Rectangular shaped Control Panel with proportionately balanced controls.

Akai GXC-325D tape deck

Dual Monitoring Cassette Stereo Tape Deck

With taped music, as in five card stud, you'll always get the results you want when you play with a deck that always delivers what you want. Take this deck, one of the new cassette decks from Akai.

The GXC-325D. It comes stacked with features to make your music sound clearer, and richer. It has a three head function, with separate recording and playback heads for wider frequency response. It comes with a closed loop double capstan, which maintains proper back tension, and perfect tapw and head contact.

The recording and playback heads of this new 3-head system are Akai's revolutionary GX Heads and are joined for perfect parallelism of recording and playback head gaps. This combined with the Closet Loop Double Capstan system and AC Servo Motor of this model clearly makes it the leader in the field of cassette recording.

Two each capstans and pinch rollers are used, one each of which is positioned in parallel at either side of the head block for stable tape speed and tape tension. This shuts out the adverse influence from outside the "closed" area between capstans so that there is no tape vibration and head-to-tape contact is perfect. Some of the other merits of this system include:

Perfect tracking and the elimination of azimuth alignment adjustment mechanisms, beacons, etc.

Better Signal-to-Noise Ratio and a wider dynamic range

Wow and Flutter reduced to 0,55% WRMS and sound drop-out minimized

3-head system facilitates Dual Monitoring and because of head portioning, there is no time lag between recording and playback signals during monitoring

Intermodulation suppressed for clearer playback

C.P.G. [Center Pole Frequency Generated] system of AC Servo Motor results in greater inertia and increassed output for extremely quiet operation and accurate motor revolutions

Performance not influenced by cassette unevenness

Completely stable operation and incomparably clear recording and playback tone quality

Lasting new machine performance

Akai GX-280D-SS tape deck

4-Head 3-Motor Automatic Reverse Surround Stereo Tape Deck

Akai's GX Head 4-Channel Surround Stereo system eliminates the inability to pick up and reproduce true concert hall sound. Every pitch of sound and reverberation effect is reproduced with all of the exciting "sense of presence" experienced when attending a live concert. Akai's surround stereo supplements conventional stereo's two front speakers with two additional rear speakers to front the "2-2 system". The listener is surrounded by two sets of speakers (left & right front and left & right rear). This arrangement does not mean, however, that simply adding two speakers to a 2-channel stereo system is all that is necessary for 4-channel stereo playback. Four separate recordings are made using four individual channels (four tracks in one direction) of the magnetic recording tape. This 4-channel stereo tape feeds into four pre and main amplifiers to activate a 4-speaker system. Thus, at playback time, sounds from separate channels are emitted from each speaker providing the listener with a feeling that he is listening to concert hall sound from the best seat in the auditorium. Model GX-280D-SS is a compatible 4-channel/2-channel stereo model. For 2-channel stereo operation, only the front channels are utilized. For exciting 4-channel surround stereo, a 4-channel stereo external amplifier or two 2-channel stereo amplifiers can be used to activate a 4-speaker system.

GX (Glass & Crystal Ferrite) Head

Akai has equipped this model with its new and amazing Glass & Crystal Ferrite Recording and Playback heads to bring you unequalled open reel high fidelity sound. With the Glass & Crystal Ferrite head, superbly wider frequencies with clear highs can be recorded in all their true fidelity with low noise tape. In other words, with the GX head, a high dynamic range and excellent Signal-to-Noise Ratio are achieved. The secret of this quality head is made of single crystal ferrite and is mounted and set in glass. The superior high range characteristics are contributable to thw structure of the head gap which focused the magnetic field into a sharp oblong radius. This focused field recording system minimizes high frequency loss, eliminating undue equalization and achieving a wider dynamic range.

6 Head system Automatic and manual Reverse Recording and Playback

One each GX forward recording, GX reverse recording, GX forward playback, GX reverse playback, forward erase, and reverse erase head make up the superior GX Head reverse recording and Playback system of this model. The quality and special process of the GX Head materials result in a wider dynamic range, better high frequency characteristics and tone quality and longer lasting performance. Manual Reverse Button and Automatic Sensing Tape Reverse completely eliminate the necessity of inverting reels by hand.

Symmetrical Head Block Layout for identical performance in both directions.

The arrangement of the head block is completely symmetrical in relation to the center capstan. The short and equi-distant tape path within the head block and between heads and reel tables on both sides assure identical performance in both directions. Tension Arms on both the take-up and supply reel sides provide perfect tape tension, also contributing to operating stability.

AC Servo Motor for capstan drive, Wow and Flutter reduced to 0,06.

The GX-265D employs a 3 motor drive system with a new AC Servo Motor for direct capstan drive, Rubber belts, flywheels, etc. are eliminated for reduced interference. This coupled with the center capstan system of this model reduces wow and flutter to an amazing 0,06%.

Cross-Field Head

On conventional recorders the signal and bias are applied to the same recording head. Therefore the frequencies recorded, especially the high frequency component of the recorded signal tend to be attenuated or erased by the effect of the bias field.

On the exclusive Akai Cross0Field Head which was developed by Akai for practical use the signal and bias heads are mounted in opposition with their centres slightly off. As the recorded signal is entirely unaffected by the prevailing effect of the entire frequency spectrum with maximum fidelity.

Sensing Tape Continuous Reverse

Automatic reverse with metallic sensing tape is used for playback only. Reverse operation will occur when metalic sensing tape on prerecorded tape makes contact with the Sensing PIN. Put metallic sensing tape as the desired reverse point on shiny side of the prerecorded tape and another metallic sensing tape at the desired reverse point  on dull side of the prerecorded tape. So, the M-10 will give continuous playback in both directions between two points

Akai CR-80 SS cartridge tape recorder

8-Track, 4/2-Channel Cartridge Recording /Playback

Model CR-80 SS is equipped with a built-in 4-channel power amplifier and 4 Speaker Jacks for Instant 4-channel or 2-channel operation. This compact unit makes 4-channel stereo recording a "cinch" even where space is a factor. The same Akai robust mechanism for top rate performance and endurance. One Micron Gap Rec/Playback Head for amazing frequency response to 16,000 Hz

1-Micron Gap Head

Just what is a one-micron gap head? It's a head with a width of only one astounding micron. Until now two or four micron gap heads have been the standards for comparing tape recorders. However, Akai has pushed ahead and narrowed the head gap; thus narrowing the difference between tape recording results and actual sound.

The Akai perfected one-micron gap head has these distinctive advantages over heads with wider gaps:

A - Excellent Frequency Response even at low tape speed

B - Clear, high pitched sound can be regenerated as a frequency tone and recorded smoothly with a minimum of distortion.

Motor

The motor of model CR-80 SS is a condenser starting two-speed induction motor. The winding characteristics of this 2-8 pole motor provides tape-speed stability and minimizes distortion

Akai GXC-710D cassette deck

The GXC 710D is another front-load model , and very sophisticated it is, too.

The Double Action" eject and tape loading safety feature is completely foolproof. When you press the Eject button, the cassette envelope moves out from the front panel just like a drawer. The upper part is carefully positioned for easy tape loading and levers at either side of the cassette holder make sure the cassette can't be inserted upside down. It's easy it's simple. And it's safe.

The combination once again of Akai's GX head plus Dolby Noise reduction plus Akai's ADR system plus a new drive system gives the highest of hi-fi performance. Tape speed is perfectly stabilised. Wow/flutter is as low as 0,08% rms. What's more, with the switchable Multiplex Filter circuit to cut out the 19 kHz pilot signal during stereo broadcast recording through an FM receiver, you get a clear and undistorted frequency response range to 17,000 Hz.

The rest of the features you can almost tale for granted. But let's just remind you of them to make sure you know exactly how much the GXC 710D has to offer you.. Memory Rewind Peak Level Indicator. Tape Selector Switches (low noise, CrO₂, ferrichrome) Direct Function Change Controls . Mic/Line Input Selector for improved Signal-to-Noise Ratio . Automatic Stop with tape release. Pause Control Line Output Level Control.

The GXC 710D is, as we said a very sophisticated machine- in its styling , in its features and in its outstanding performance.
