What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Royd Coniston R loudspeakers

The Coniston R small 2-way units

This model uses our unique development of bass reflex loading. The bass advantage of bass reflex designs over any other arrangement, is that given the same cabinet size, bass unit diameter and sensitivity, then lower frequencies can be accurately reproduced. This means that the bass performance achieved by a small reflex cabinet would require a much larger closed cabinet. Small cabinets have the advantage of scale over larger cabinets and can much more easily and economically be made structurally sound

In a simple bass reflex arrangement it is almost impossible to prevent a wide range of frequencies from being emitted from the port whereas only low bass frequency emission is required, typically below 90 Hz. A unique solution to this problem has bass unit magnet to the cabinet back and this tube provides a secondary vented chamber for the bass reflex loading. The emission of frequencies above 90 Hz is dramatically cut whilst frequencies below 90 Hz remain unaffected. Further refinements have been incorporated in the design of the Coniston R to reduce windage noise and cavity resonances.

Royd A7 loudspeakers

The seven litre family from Royd Loudspeakers makes full use of the inherent theoretical advantages to be gained from small loudspeakers compared with larger units. These advantages are revealed by the fast and accurate bass performance coupled with very detailed and stable imaging.

In your choice of components for a hi-fi system please be guided by the basic rule that no component in the chain can improve the quality of the incoming signal. A loudspeaker can, at best , faithfully reproduce the signal provided by the amplifier. This does not mean that the choice of loudspeaker is unimportant but it does mean that if you choose a good amplifier you need good loudspeakers.

 The Royd A7 loudspeaker

Exceptional bass performance, sensitivity and detailed reproduction are achieved in this small cabinet by using a unique development of reflex bass loading. A 70 mm diameter aluminium tube is bonded to the backplate of the bass unit and to the cabinet back. The arrangement of this tube cancels out, or damps, resonances in the cabinet and bass unit, acts as a heat sink to increase the power handling capacity, and provides the bass refles loading secondary chamber.

The bass/mid range unit and tweeter have been specifically developed to optimise the performance of this cabinet system.

The A7 design has been carefully adjusted to make the best use of the improvement in performance which can be obtained, by siting small loudspeakers on a bookshelf bet ween books, or on speaker stands, one inch to six inches away from a rear wall.

Royd Eden loudspeakers

The Eden loudspeaker

The Eden is the latest and most exciting development if our range of compact loudspeakers. It is the logical step forward from our established A7 and Coniston R models and as such represents the result of 7 years of continuous research and development. We believe The Eden offers the most satisfying musical performance for a loudspeaker of its size in today's market. Like all our compact loudspeakers it is designed to be used close to a wall.

the Eden features Royd's unique modified reflex bass loading to give you accurate bass reproduction and underpin the outstanding musical performance. Cabinet panel resonances have been eliminated by very heavy and rigid laminated construction.

The drive units developed for this loudspeaker are ideally matched to each other and to the cabinet. The tweeter is a 19 mm polyamide dome with vented centre magnet system and dual cavity, critically damped, rear loading to give you exceptional transparency and clarity. The coil is wound on an aluminium former and is cooled and damped by ferrofluid. The bass unit chassis is an aluminium die casting to provide the strength and rigidity essential for fast and accurate sound reproduction and is retained in the cabinet by eight screws reinforced by silicone rubber sealing. The chassis also provides the large free area behind the cone essential to minimise reflection of sound waves and give you uncluttered, detailed reproduction. Because the drive units are so well matched, the crossover circuit is uncomplicated thus allowing the signal from your amplifier to be revealed unhindered.

The loudspeakers are available in either passive form with internal crossovers, at extra cost, are available for use with the active version.

The speaker are designed for use on good quality stands or wall brackets, with their backs close to a wall.

Royd Prior loudspeakers

In The Prior, flagship model, Royd have created a loudspeaker which not only builds on the famous speed and transparency of the Royd 7 litre range, but also has the ability to play even the deepest bass lines with power and grace.
Previous to The Prior the large cabinets required for full bass reproduction imposed their own signature upon the music, coloyring the sound and destroying the illusion of live performers playing in time and in tune with one another. Reserch here at Royd has led to the virtual elimination of this problem.
The cabinet of The Prior is extensively mass damped, resistively braced and features our new base plate which comprises both steel and filled polyuretheane elastomer. Not only does this spiked foot provide a stable platform for The Prior but it also acts as a "mechanical earth", absorbing cabinet resonances.
Finished in a high quality black ash or walnut veneer, the sloping front panel is not only elegant but also serves to time align the advanced drive units, so enabling The Prior to create a soundstage which  is both wide and deep.

While equally at home with analogue or digital sources The Prior is ruthlessly revealing of faults in partnering equipment and demands the very best in order that its true potential may be realised. In such company this innovative loudspeaker from Royd sets new standards for those who are serious about reproducing music in their homes.

Royd Abbot loudspeakers

Slim and elegant, The Abbot is compact floor standing model which, while occupying little more space than a stand mounted miniature, is capable of producing a big speaker sound.
Finished in the same high quality veneers The Abbot utilises much of the technology featured in The Prior. This includes time aligned drive units, a carefully constructed cabinet containing comprehensive bracing and the new steel and filled polyurethane elstomer base plate.
Substituting the 8" doped fibre bass/mid range driver for a 6-1/2" model the Abbot is smaller and less costly than The Prior. The Abbot  offers the optimum performance for the music lover who is limited for space, providing excellent sound quality in smaller rooms and being very unexacting in its siting requirements.
A wide range of amplification may be used to drive The Abbot. It will work happily with good integrated models yet reward those who drive them with the very best pre-power combinations.
as with all Royd loudspeakers The Abbot is built to the highest standards for pride of ownership and quality sound reproduction, not merely upon first listening, but for many years to come.

Royd Minstrel

The Minstrel fulfils that essential requirement - it allows you to enjoy your music to the full. Available in a stylish range of finishes, The Minstrel provides high quality listening at a realistic price.
The Minstrel is a versatile loudspeaker which may b eused on shelves, wall mounted or floorstanding, for which a base complete with spikes is available.
Designed for use with a very wide range of amplification, it is equally at home with a digital or analogue source.

The Minstrel is also unfussy as to its placement in the listening room and is therefore the ideal answer to accoustically difficult locations.
The new side ported reflex design allows for the sdjustment of bass response by choosing to have the ports face each other or a side wall.
The Minstrel benefits from Royd's ongoing research and development program and builds on the technical advances incorporated  in the acclaimed Royd Abbot. In addition to the use of mass damping and resistive bracing.

The Minstrel includes an innovative diaphragm construction for the bass unit, which has been developed with the use of the latest techniques of computer impulse analysis. This has resulted in the speaker capturing the full range and power of bass in recorded music without sacrificing any of the clarity and detail contained in the mid range.
These technical advances are clearly audible in the quality of the sound production of The Minstrel, making it an excellent choice for all high fidelity home entertainment systems.
