What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck

The ultimate innovation in cassette technology - precise, fully automatic playback head azimuth adjustment. Optimum reproduction quality in both forward and reverse playback modes.

In a slightly different genere than the luxurious 1000ZXL, the Dragon is undoubtedly the finest cassette deck available. It represents the culmination of Nakamichi's vast technical resources and experience, retaining the basic uncompromising Nakamichi standards of performance through use of such innovations as an Asymmetrical, Dual-Capstan Double-Direct-Drive Transport, a Discrete Three-Head configuration, very high quality record/playback amplifier circuitry and, of particular interest to perfectionists, our unique NAAC (Nakamichi Auto Azimuth Correction) for the ultimate in playback performance from both sides on any tape.

Proper azimuth alignment is one of the most important factors in achieving the best possible cassette reproduction quality. For this reason, several Nakamichi cassette decks offer either automatic or manual adjustment of record head azimuth. Ideally, however, playback head azimuth should be adjustable so that even tapes recorded on other decks will be reproduced with the recorded frequency response and sound quality fully intact. Commercially available music tape, tapes borrowed from a friend, tapes in which the shell has warped slightly (a common occurrence) - all actually require some degree of playback head azimuth alignment to provide the best possible reproduction quality. Further, inaccuracies in cassette shell symmetry result in completely different azimuth alignment requirements in forward and reverse on auto-revers decks, often causing a significant variation in sound quality. All these points and problems LED Nakamichi to the development of the world's first fully automatic playback head azimuth alignment system NAAC, and its incorporation into this fine deck.

The Dragon's unique double direct drive system employs two Nakamichi quartz PLL servo Super Linear Torque DD motors (one for each capstan) so that wow and flutter are essentially eliminated while maintaining perfect transport stability in both forward and reverse directions. Auto reverse operation has been made available only in the playback mode so that the superb performance of the Discrete Three-head System is not compromised. Of course, full provision is made for left and right channel bias and record/playback level adjustment. All the Dragon's performance features also mean that the built-in Dolby C-type noise reduction system operates under ideal conditions for the best performance. Likewise, heads, mechanism and amplifiers are all the best available, as are features such as the microcomputer-controlled, real-time mechanism control system proven in other Nakamichi decks. Convenience features include Auto Rec Pause, where the deck automatically enters the pause mode during recording if a blank interval of 30 seconds or longer is detected in the source, switchable MPX and subsonic filters, easy cueing, and a dual-speed auto fader function, for customized recording with professional fade-in/fade-out results.

Nakamichi 580 cassette tape deck

The Crystalloy SuperHead

The 580 uses the record/play SuperHead, originally introduced on the 600 II Cassette Console. The latest version of this head boasts an incredibly narrow 0,9 micron gap. This is narrower than most playback-only heads in three-head designs, and it assures distortion-free playback of the highest frequencies. Yet, during record, the amazing SuperHead magnetizes the tape as if it has a much wider gap, thanks to proprietary manufacturing techniques that virtually eliminate head core saturation. The prof. Is in the 580's remarkable frequency response, there are many three-head cassette decks on the market that cannot come close to matching this performance. The magnetic properties of Crystalloy, furthermore, are far closer to ideal than anything else currently available, including sendust to none, which means distortion is very low. And thanks to special surface "cutouts", the SuperHead lasts a long time.

The Direct Flux Erase Head

Mast manufacturers would be very satisfied indeed with a unique device lke the record/play SuperHead. But Nakamichi's in-depth research has shown that even the best of record/play heads can be further improved by providing more complete erasure than normally available. Any noise left on the tape before it reaches the record head can be detrimental to sound quality. The noise is "modulated" by the record head signal, and the recording is thus robbed of clarity. This has been a much neglected area because most designers assume that all an erase head needs do is bring the previously recorded signal down to the level of tape hiss. But in our tests, we found that recordings made on "virgin" or bulk-erased tape sounded better and had less modulation noise than a recording made on normally erased tape. The implication was clear; an erase head should ideally do the same thing as a powerful bulk-eraser.

Nakamichi RX-505 cassette deck

Unidirectional Auto Reverse Cassette Deck

Since unveiling the world's first fully Discrete Three-Head cassette deck with the Model 1000, Nakamichi has long dreamt of making the Discrete Three head design possible in a record/playback auto reverse deck. With the RX-505, we've made the dream a reality. It combines the superior quality of a one-way, Discrete Three-Head, Closed-Loop Dual-Capstan Deck, with the outstanding convenience of auto reverse operation.

Conventional auto reverse decks are designed to reverse the direction of tape travel at the end of a cassette side. Because of this, they all suffer from the resulting problem of azimuth error between the two sides of a tape, causing an audible deterioration in sound quality. And no matter how precise a tape transport is made, azimuth error arising from a reversal in tape travel direction can't be completely eliminated by conventional designs because of irregularities in the construction and "performance" of standard cassette shells. It look the engineering genius and incredible precision of the NAAC system in the Nakamichi Dragon to fully eliminate the problem, with continuous automatic playback head azimuth alignment of both sides of the tape.

The Unidirectional Auto Reverse mechanism solves the same problem with a completely new concept in auto reverse mechanism design. Instead of reversing tape travel direction, this unique mechanism automatically reverses the cassette instead, so absolutely identical tape travel conditions are maintained for both sides A and B of a tape.

Not only is azimuth error between sides of a tape fully eliminated, the inherent advantages of tape travel accuracy and reliability in a one-way transport mechanism can be brought to the highest possible level.

Fully Discrete Tree-Head design guarantees exceptionally wide, flat frequency response to 20 kHz. Tape travel is controlled with extreme precision by only the capstans themselves in a highly accurate Closed-Loop Dual-Capstan silent mechanism, and the individual capstans are machined to slightly different diameters so that unwanted flutter components are not allowed to arise. The recording and playback amps are full DC configuration with bipolar power supply, for extremely low total harmonic distortion of less than 0,005%, a figure rivalling that of the finest home audio preamplifiers.

The RX-505 also offers a full complement of features and functions that add more versatility and convenience to the auto reverse format. Automatic fade-out and fade-in prior to and after the reverse operation provide a smooth transition between sides of a tape. Auto Rec Standby, Auto Rec Pause, program Seek, a Master Fader control, and more provide the operating control and convenience cassette enthusiasts will find most useful - especially with an auto revers deck.

With the RX-505 Nakamichi has again created an all new standard in cassette deck performance.

Nakamichi CR-5 cassette deck

Nakamichi - the measure of excellence.

Once again, Nakamichi is at the vanguard of a new trend in high-class cassette decks, providing the highest possible performance quality from every cassette while at the same time simplifying deck operation to make that performance available to everyone. The new Nakamichi CR5 Discrete-head Cassette Decks embody both the vital aspects of this trend, offering fully discrete three-head designs, direct-drive closed-loop dual-capstan transports, low-distortion/low-noise amplifiers and a host of other features.

Direct-Drive Dual-Capstan Transport

Nakamichi's Asymmetrical Diffused-Resonance Dual-Capstan Transport, with left and right capstans (and flywheels) of different diameters, greatly reduces flutter. There is nothing touching the tape between the two capstans to risk the introduction of scrape flutter and modulation noise, that is, there is no intracapstan tape guide, and a special tape pad lifter prevents the cassette's own pad from causing skewing and azimuth error. Both capstans have a slip-free matte finish to aid in maintaining ideal tape tension; it is driven directly by an extremely high precision motor controlled by an FG (frequency-generator) servo. The practical results of all this translate to smooth, constant tape speed, with wow-and-flutter of 0,027% (WTD RMS) or less. Head-base and brake movement is commanded by the solenoid-free Nakamichi Silent Mechanism for ease of use and quiet , quick response.

Discrete Three Head Design

Nakamichi's original system with three fully independent heads offers a wide gap on the Crystalloy REC head for clean signal transfer and a narrow gap on the Crystalloy PLAY head for best high-frequency resolution.

Low-Distortion Amplifier Circuitry

Directly coupling the recording and playback head with their respective amplifier sections has eliminated coupling capacitors and their ill effects and helped achieve a level of performance that is on a par with the finest home-use preamplifiers. In the same spirit, Nakamichi engineers used discrete circuity with high-quality parts, and even went as far as to completely shield the power supply and FL display sections from the audio circuits. Thanks to these measures, the Signal-to-Noise Ratio remains very high, and the Total Harmonic Distortion is never more than 0,005%.

Nakamichi CR-4 cassette deck

Optimize Performance with Every Tape

Experienced recordists know that no two tapes are precisely identical. Even tapes from the same manufacturer carrying the same designation differ from batch to batch and change from year to year. Tapes from different manufacturers vary more widely. If you want the best performance from every tape, the Nakamichi CR4 Discrete Head Cassette Deck is for you. Test signals and accurate perfect Dolby tracking and smooth response. The procedure is quick, simple and notably more accurate than less sophisticated tape-matching systems.

CR4 Calibration

"Calibration" involves recording and playing two test tones: a low-frequency tone which is used to adjust the gain of the recording amplifier to compensate for differences in tape sensitivity and ensure proper Dolby tracking and a high-frequency tone used to adjust bias and produce flat response. Almost invariably a "3-head" design is used so that recording and playback can be carried on simultaneously.

Conventional calibration systems have several problems. Most 3-head decks use a sandwich record/play head. Record and play sections use separate cores but they are in the same housing. There's no room between them for adequate shielding and flux leaks from the record gap into the play gap. This produces incorrect playback levels and erroneous calibration. Next, with a "sandwich" head, there's no way to align the gaps after construction. Azimuth misalignment causes a loss in high frequency response; "correcting" it by reducing bias results in increased distortion, more dropouts and reduced dynamic range. To minimize misalignment error, most decks set bias with an 8 or 10 kHz tone. This reduces the calibration error but produces unpredictable response at higher frequencies. To save maney, most systems record the tones on one track and use the result to calibrate both. Under these conditions, left-and right-channel response can be quite different.

Thanks to Nakamichi "Discrete-Head technology", the CR4 canbe calibrated accurately. Record and play heads are physically as well as electrically independent and are individually shielded to prevent leakage. Physical independence permits magnetic alignment of each head for perfect azimuth and allows use of a high bias calibration tone (15 kHz). On quality tapes such as Nakamichi ZX, SX or EXII, response is flat to 21 kHz. Furthermore, in the CR4, the tones are recorded on both tracks and the average of the outputs is used to set bias thus ensuring similar response on the left and right channels.

Calibrating the CR4 is quick and simple. Just press the Calibration button and adjust the Bias and Level controls for zero readings on the left and right indicators. When you relese the button, the tape rewinds automatically.

Direct-Drive Transport

The CR4 uses one of the finest transorts available today, the Nakamichi Microprocessor-Controlled Asymmertical Dual-Capstan Direct-Drive Silent Mechanism. Its two capstans differ in diameter and rotation rate to prevent resonance and the takeup capstan is directly driven by an FG-servo motor to eliminate wow. Tape tension is controlled so perfectly that no pressure pad is needed to mainatin tape-to-head contact. A unique "lifter" disengages the pad to reduce scrape flutter and modulataion noise and thereby result in recordings of exceptional clarity.

The transport is operated by a microprocessor-supervised motor-driven cam. Cam operation is more gentle and precise than solenoid operation and it is completely free of vibration which contributes to sound clarity. The microprocessor permits remote control (via the optional RM5 Remote Control Unit or the System Remote jack on the CA-7 Control Amplifier), automatically takes up slack tape when a cassette is loaded and supervises every change in operation so you can change modes in complete safety.

Superior Design and Construction

Many reasons for the CR4's exceptional performance are found under its heavy-gauge cover. Inside is a copper-plated chassis for beter shielding, oxygen-free-copper PC boards, OFC head windings, even an OFC line cord. You'll find a quadruple-shielded transformer to prevent humm and Nakamichi's Multi-Regulated Power Supply to eliminate interstage coulping and noise. You'll find the finest components including new Dolby circuits for better performance and gold-plated input, output and headphone jacks for more reliable operation

Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck

The BX-300 incorporates a wealth of original Nakamichi Technology including the Discrete Three-Head Recording System that guarantees 20 - 20,000 Hz ±3 dB response, perfect magnetic azimuth alignment, and maximum MOL; the Asymmetrical Dual-Capstan Diffused-Resonance Transport that eliminates the need for pressure pads and intracapstan guides and so has remarkably low scrape flutter and modulation noise for superior sound clarity; and Nakamicho-quality electronics for reduced noise and distortion. We even created a new high-inertia DD capstan motor and servo for the BX-300 to provide the benefits of direct drive - without its problems. If you'd rather invest insuperior performance than spend a bundle on features you don't really need, you'll find the BX-300 made for you.

The Discrete Three-head System - Perfect Magnetic Azimuth Alignment Ensures 20 - 20,000 Hz

A "3-head" deck should be better than a 2-head deck because separate record and play heads can be individually optimized. A wide recording gap ensures full tape utilization for optimum MOL while a narrow playback gap resolves high frequency recordings. A 3-head deck also allows of-tape monitoring so you can check quality as you're recording. But beware - all 3-head decks are not the same.

Most 3-head decks use "sandwich" heads  - record and play sections are in the same housing. Once the head is made, there's no way to align the sections. Even if the gaps are mechanically parallel, the magnetic gaps may not be , and, without perfect magnetic alignment, response is impaired. And, with the gaps so close together, recording flux may leak into the playback core. In severe cases, this "crossfeed" upsets Dolby tracking and can be heard as a preecho when monitoring compromising the monitor's usefulness.

To Nakamichi, "3-head" means three discrete heads - physically independent heads that are perfectly optimized and magnetically aligned after insstallation to ensure flat response, maximum headroom and minimum noise at all frequencies.

Our recording and playback heads are individually shielded to eliminate crossfeed and noise pickup. They are individually adjustable in height, azimuth, and zenith to ensure perfect tracking, magnetic alignment and tape contact. Our mounting system is unusually sophisticated and allows non-interacting adjustment of each parameter for each head after installation. The results speak for themselves.

Playback head - P2H-3L; with a 0,8 micron gap and low-loss laminated-Crystalloy core, the P2H-3L provides smooth response to 20 kHz. A special hyperbolic geometry virtually eliminates "contour effect" so response is uniform to the lowest frequencies.

Recording head - R-3L; this 3,5 micron gap head produces an extremely sharp critical zone for maximum high-frequency response and MOL. Its laminated-Crystalloy core easily handles the bias needed to record high-coercivity metal tape and ensures exceptional dynamic range.

Erase head - E-4F; with two erasing gaps, a low-loss ferrite core and high-saturation sendust poletip, the E-4F ensures complete erasure for perfect sound clarity

Asymmetrical Dual-Capstan Diffused-Resonance Transport Eliminates Scrape Flutter and Modulation Noise.

Most dual-capstan decks use identical capstans for supply and takeup. They rotate at the same rate and concentrate wow at specific frequencies making it much more audible. Tape tension within the "closed loop" isn't constant -  the whole point of a closed-loop system - so a pressure pad is used to maintain tape-to-head contact. With a pressure pad, tape-to-head contact becomes erratic and, unless the pad is perfectly oriented, the tape skews causing mistracking and azimuth error. Thus an intracapstan guide needed.

After years of research, Nakamichi created the "asymetrical Dual-Capstan Diffused-Resonance Transport" -  the only mechanism that eliminates coherent wow and exercises such precise control that neither pressure pad not intracapstan guide are required.

The pad and guide have audible effects. As the tape passes them, it vibrates causing "scrape flutter" and "modulation noise" which destroy sound clarity. Modulation noise varies with recording level so it's not suppressed by noise-reduction systems. In fact, the perceived quality of digital recording is largely due to the absence of modulation noise. Reoving the pad and guide virtually eliminates scrape flutter and modulation noise and allows music to emerge with digital-like tansparency. To eliminate coherent wow, the transport is "asymmetric", capstan are of different diameter and rotate at different rates so they don't resonate and concentrate wow at specific frequencies.

High-Inertia Direct-Drive Capstan Motor and High-Precision Servo Ensure Ultra-Low Wow and Flutter

"Direct Drive" should be superior to belt drive because a belt can introduce speed variations if it doesn't run true. But, direct drive mercilessly reveals motor cogging becasue there's no compliant belt to filter it. Cogging causes high frequency flutter that is heard but ignored in specifications. All DD decks are not the same.

The BX-300 takeup capstan is directly driven by an outstanding new motor that is virtually cog-free thanks to its unusually high inertia. The motor has an exceptionally heavy rotor with the mass concentrated at the circumference to create a flywheel that ensures smooth rotation. It is brushless, slotless and coreless so torque fluctuations are inherently low.

To further reduce flutter, we extended the servo bandwidth to correct torque variations up to 1 kHz - the key element being a 160-segment frequency generator that senses speed every 2-1/4 degrees of rotation. A careful choice of components ensures excellent stability over time and temperaature.

The BX-300 features Nakamichi's "Silent Mechanism" in which a microprocessor=controlled Motor-Driven Cam replaces conventional solenoids. There's no mechanical shock to upset head alignment and each operation is performed swiftly and precisely.

The motor actuates three switch cams to inform the microprocessor of the current status. This "dialogue" between mechanism and microprocessor permits sophisticated precise control.

Nakamichi Electronics On A Par with The Finest Preamps

To realize the full potential of nakamichi heads and use the Dolby NR system to best advantage, we developed new electronics for the BX-300. with distortion under 0,005%, they're equivalent to the finest preamps.

Recording, line and headphone amplifiers are direct-coupled and bipolar-powered for maximum dynamic range. The Double-NF recording equalizer is directly coupled to the recording head for low distortion and precise compensation.

Playback amplifiers are sensitive to power supply fluctuations; our special circuitry overcomes this problems and yields excellent Signal-to-Noise, High-gain low-noise input FETs and Double-NF topology reduce distortion and noise and ensure perfect head matching

A central power supply feeds each circuit separately to eliminate noise and crosstalk.

Dolby chips are handpicked to ensure perfect matching and realize Dolby-C's full potential.

An Array of Truly Features for Superb Operating Convenience

Dual-Speed Master Fader: once you've set maximum recording level and channel balance with the BX-300's left and right Rec level sliders, you can create professional fades at the touch of a button. Press lightly on UP or DOWN for a 4-second fade; press and hold for a 2-second fade

Auto Repeat: turn on Auto Repeat and the tape automatically rewinds and replays when it reaches the end. Or, use Auto Repeat with Memory Stop to repeat playback from counter zero.

Bias Fine Tuning: even tapes of the same general type differ somewhat in bias requirements. The BX-300's Bias Fine Tune control allows you to adjust bias to create perfect recordings.

Pitch Control: it's no problem to "true" the BX-300 to your piano or other musical instrument. Its Pitch Control allows you to alter playback speed by ±6% - one semitone - to correct an off-pitch recording.

Dolby B/C Noise Reduction: B-type NR reduces noise in the upper frequency region by approximately 10  dB . C-type NR gives you 20 dB noise reduction from 2 kHz to 8 kHz where tape hiss is most audible.

Wide-Raange Peak-Responding Meters: LEDs accurately indicate recording level over a wide 50 dB range (-40 dB to =10 dB)

4-Digit LED Tape Counter: referenced to "0000", this precision counter reads bidirectionally from "-999" to "9999"

Discrete-Configuration / High-Current Power Amplifier

If you were to look into the average basic receiver, chances are you'd find IC power amplifiers. That's not surprising because IC power amps are convenient, inexpensive and produce adequate sound for the not-too-discriminating listener. For better or for worse, Nakamichi engineers are a pretty discriminating lot and, after auditioning the various IC power amps on the markeet, decided to design their own "discrete" power amplifier. By "discrete" we mean a custom-designed circuit using carefully selected individual components that can be fine tuned for optimum performance. It's a more expensive way to go, but it permits us to create a uniquely musical design that guarantees "Nakamichi Sound" at an entry-level price.

The discrete output transistors used in the TA-1 have a higher current capability than those in the average 35-watt power IC. With an ability to deliver peak currents of 10 amperas, the TA-1 output devices drive difficult loudspeakers easily and that means purer, more natural sound. Then, too, by designing our own circuit, we ensure adequate output-stage and loudspeaker protection without audible side effects. That means the TA-1 will play safely and more loudly than a comparably rated receiver that uses power ICs. Finally, by custom designing the output stage, we are able to increase the gain over that of an IC, incorporate the tone controls as part of the power amp and thus eliminate need for a line amplifier - another step in simplifying the signal path.

Nakamichi Concept preamp and Tone Controls

You'll find the Nakamichi TA-1 substantially different from the ordinary in its phono preamp and tone controls too. For example, the preamp has a subsonic filter built into the phono equalizer - not as an appendage to the line amplifier. This means that, not only can you play warped records without overloading your speakers, you can make clean copies of them without overloading your tape recorder - an advantage many designs do not provide. And, thanks to Nakamichi precision components, equalization accuracy is within ±1 dB from 30 Hz to 20 kHz including the effects of the filter.

TA-1 tone controls were designed to be useful, not flashy. Compared with those in other receivers TA-1 controls have a carefully limited range and are most effective at frequency extremes, not in the midband. This means you can create a subtle boost or cut in the extreme bass or treble without altering the character of the music. Similary, the TA-1 loudness contour comes into increasing prominence as volume is reduced and therefore tracks the characteristics of human hearing at low listening levels in a more natural way.

Multiple Power Supplies with Isolated-Ground Topology

Even though the TA-1 is Nakamichi's "entry-levl" receiver, it has been designed with separate transformer windings and power supplies for the audio and control circuits to prevent control-circuit noise from contaminating musical purity. In addition, the tuner's power source is regulated independently of the power-amp and preamp sources and that for the preamp features Nakamichi's unique "Isolated-Ground" topology to ensure a noise-free ground reference for the critical low-level stages. Circuit grounds are kept separate for each channel both in the power amp and in the preamp for best channel separation and absolute musical purity.

Quartz PLL Synthesized Tuner

The TA-1's  tuner complements the excellent sound of its preamp and power amp. A quartz PLL synthesized "front-end", with twin varicap diode, provides accurate drift-free reception, 10 station presets and a choice of manual or auto-seek tuning modes. As with every Nakamichi tuner, the TA-1 uses an unusually high reference frequancy to provide better Signal-to-Noise ratio and lower distortion.
