What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Inside the chassis of the DP-60 , digital circuitry, such as the player, is electrically isolated from the analog circuitry by ultra high-speed, optoisolatora with a transmission capacity of 40 Mbits/second. In addition, special technology protects the internal circuitry from electromagnetic and static e;ectricity interference,, thus preventing the sound quality from being degraded by high-frequency noise. Carefully selected, top-grade 18-bit ICs are adopted for the D/A converters, each of which is precisely adjusted on the production line to achieve upper-limit performance. A 20-bit eight-time oversampling filter, the most advanced digital filter, is provided for both the left and the right channels. These digital filters are independent of each other and achieve an unnecessary bandpass attenuation of -110 dB and a bandpass ripple of ±0,00005 dB.

 

The DP-60 can boast a lot more of Accuphase's state-of-the-art. Technology though,, suh as a noise shaper that reduces re-quantized noise to near the theoretical lower limit, a 3-pole GIC lowpass filter with excellent amplitude and phase characteristics, a high precision digital deemphasis circuit with a deviation of ±0,001 dB and digital remote control that can adjust the gain up to -24 dB in 1 dB units.

Another feature of DP-60 is its rigid construction and high resistance to vibration and shock. The linear motor laser pickup is securely mounted on a diecast aluminium frame and the mechanism itself is fixed to a metal chassis of 1,6 mm thick, so that the vibration generated by the motor is almost completely absorbed. This construction brings the total weight of DP-60 to 14,5 kg, making it one of the heaviest CD player available.

The custom-built 8-bit microprocessor in the DP-60 gives remarkably short access time of 1 second or less.

The side panels of the Dp-60 use natural persimon board, following the design of the series of Accuphase models, with only the necessary switches on the front panel for ease of operation. Despite this implicity of appearance, the DP-60 has many convenient functions, such as "power On play" that automatically starts playback when the power is turned on, and a function to display and plaay back in units of one frame 91/75 second.

Accuphase P-300

 It is mistake to calculate the value of a power amplifier solely in terms of $/power or cost/power. Other more important factors should also be consideraded to assess its overall value such as those power qualities like low distortion, well-regulated power supply and power bandwidth, as well as additional functions and appearance values.
Music delivered through a good power amplifier should have an extra quality of deep, rich bass and the subtle nuances of inner musical fabric which stir and warm the soul with emotion. A good power amplifier must also have the range to reproduce precisely the softest to the loudest passages of music, and, at the same time, it must be able to handle, without distorting, all the large input amplitudes that may be involved.

 Every Stage is Push-Pull Driven
Every stage, from input to output, is a direct-coupled, extravagant, push-pull lineup. As a result, a big improvement in characteristics before negative feedback application ensures low distortion and dependable operation with any impedance and type of speaker, throughout the audio range, from low to high powers.

Triple Push-Pull Output Stages
Six heavy-duty power  transistors are used in the direct-coupled, Complementary-Symmetry circuit stage of each channel. A large efficient heat sink is provided to ensure adeguate heat dissipation when the P-300 is required to deliver full power output continuously.
 Heavy Duty Stable Power Supply
The stable power supply of the P-300 which can meet the heavy requirements of 400 watts of power into 4 Ω without strain, also can maintain, with ease, well required supply voltages against varying load conditions created by rapidly changing input signals. Even for fff, each music part is separated smoothly, and there is no awareness of muddlness.

Closely Selected Parts
It is a well known fact that different parts can be responsible for differences in sound quality, even from exactly the same amplifier circuit. This is due to the fact that the parts themselves often possess certain electrical characteristics which have no relation to their designated function.
All parts, therefore, are selected carefully with "performance first" in mind, and they are subjected to severe durability and other tests bto determine how their characteristics might effect sound quality.
 Dependable Speaker protection Circuit
Mistakes in speaker connections that cause short circuited outputs or similar troubles will disconected the speakers automatically by relay action from this amplifier to protect expensive speakers from damage. In such cases, the power meter lamp will flash on and off successively as a warning signal. As soon as the trouble is corrected, the lamp will again glow steadily, and normal operation will resume automatically.

Bandpass Filters
Undesirable turntable rumble and subsonic tone arm resonance vibrations that enter the input may appear as intermodulation distortion in the mid and high frequency ranges. Ultrasonic vibrations that enter the input can also mix with high frequency range signals to cause "beat" interference and overheating of transistors. Bandpass filters, with a sharp cut-off characteristic of 18 dB/oct, are provided to eliminate these undesirable signals below 17 Hz, and above 24 kHz. These filters can be switched On or Off with a control available on the front sub-panel.
 Large Size Power Meters
Large size power meters indicate power output in dB. Switch selection of three ranges, 0 dB, -10 dB and -20 dB, permit both low and high power measurements. A 0 dB reading indicates power output of 150 watts into 8 Ω when the meter range switch is set to 0 dB.

Plenty of Input/Output Terminals
Plenty of outputs  are available to which four pairs of stereo speakers can be connected, and switch selected. Accommodation for two pairs of input systems are also provided, and they too can be switch selected. Jacks are available on the front sub-panel for one pair each of these inputs and outputs, respectively.

Power Limiter
A power limiter switch is provided on the front panel so that power output can be limited to protect high efficiency speakers when thay are used. This switch permits choice of 25%, 50% and full power operation.

Accuphase P-250

 High power output of 100 wats per channel into 8 ohms with clean sound quality at all listening levels. This high power capability, with distortion at less than 0,1% from 20 to 20,000 Hz is fully guaranteed. Heavy duty power transistors in a parallel push-pull drive output stage and large heat sinks back up this Accuphase warranty.
High power amplifiers need an especially reliable power supply that must not only provide the energy to drive the speakers but the capacity to store and deliver adeguate power to trace the sharpest fluctuating signal. The P-250 has just such a power supply with an oversize power transformaer and two giant 20,000µF filter capacitors that can easily supply the energy required to deliver 280 watts of continuous power into 4 ohms. A severe rise in distortion when  volume is reduced to low levels is a problem with many high power amplifiers, but not so with the P-250 in which such distortion has been eliminated to the lowest possible limit. It permits enjoyment of clean, clear pianissimo passages at All volume levels.
 Speaker Damping Control enhances characteristic tonal qualities speakers.
The damping factor of solid state amplifiers is generally very large and ideal for damping the speakers. However, some speakers require en amplifier with a low damping factor to reproduce rich, full-bodied sound. The P-250 has a Speaker Damping Control which permits choice of three damping factors and induces maximum potential performance from any speaker. Damping factor with an 8 ohm  load becomes more than 50 when this control is set to Normal. Likewise, it is 5 at Medium position, and 1 at at Soft position. It enables choosing the speaker sound that one prefers.

Foolproof protection Circuit safeguards power transistors and speakers.
The P-250 has a built-in Protection Circuit which guards against damage to speakers or power transistors in case of shorts when the speakers are connected, or when abnormally low impedance output load connections are made. If the speakers are shorted, this circuit automatically cuts them from the amplifier.
 Large size power meters.
Large size power meters indicate power output in decibels (dB). The meters also provide indications to read output power level directly in watts. Switch selection of three ranges, 0 dB; -10 dB and -20 dB, permit both low and high power measurement. At 0 dB reading indicates power output of 100 watts into 8 ohms when the meter range switch is set to 0 dB.

Accuphase C-200

 A good control center must be able to preamplify program source signals faithfully without changing their characteristics. It must also be able to provide compensation, when required, for room acoustics or deficieciesin program source signals. To satisfy the first requirement of fidelity, a good control center must have excellent characteristics such as wide dynamic range, flat frequency response, low noise and low distortion as well as the ability to amplify and deliver a true replica of the input pulse signal. As for its second function of supplying compensation, it must have excellent equalization and other circuitry that can be finely adjusted, as well as efficient filters to cut off noise.
Moreover, a good control center must have plenty of input connectors, and its controls should be well laid out to avoid complexity.
Accuphase C-200, which was designed to serve as a top class control center, easily meets all these requirements, and more. Every stage is push-pull driven and powered by dual power supplies. Input voltages up to 400 mVrms can be handled, a maximum for equalizer amplifiers. Its 10 inputs and 7 outputs, and a total of 28 controls attest to its functional diversity. Yet it is simple to operate. Excellent design and full utilization of its front and front-sub panels have made this possible.

Originality Marks Equalizer Circuitry
A) Differential amplification push-pull circuitry throughout Direct-coupled, complementary symmetrical circuit in every stage assures very excellent fidelity and outstanding stability.
B) Easily handles dynamic range inputs.
Employment of complementary-symmetry Class A driver amplifier in the final stage and use of plus, minus dual power supplies enable the C-200 to handle wide dynamic range inputs as large as 400 mVrms at1kHz with distortion ratio less than 0,05%. This rating applies with the equalizer amplifier gain set at 40 dB. If it is set to 30 dB, input voltages up to 1,2 Vrms can be handled.

The C-200 is equipped with a Low Enhance switch which accentuates rich bass tones that add to music enjoyment. This switch offers selection of 0, +0,5 and +1 dB change against the RIAA characteristic curve at 100 Hz.
D) Disc input level control has 10 dB variation.
A 10 dB continuously variable attenuator is available to attenuate cartridge output, when excessive, to a siutable level. It also permits comparison of cartridges connected to Disc 1 and Disc 2, and equalization of their levels.
E) Disc input has impedence matching switch.
The C-200 is equiped with an impedance matching switch which provides selection of 30 K, 47 K and 100 Kohms  input impedances at Disc 1. This makes impedance matching easy, especially to moving coil cartridges connected through step-up coupling transformers that require different optimum impedances depending on the make. It eliminates mismatching impedances  at disc input connections which deteriorate sound quality.
F) Subsonic filter prevents intermodulation distortion.
Sunsonic vibrations of the turnntable motor, etc., when playing records,should be cut before they can enter the input since they may otherwise cause intermodulation distortion. The C-200 has a subsonic filter that provides this sharp cut-off at 25 Hz.


Wide Choice of Tone Variation
A) 10-step bass control, plus two turnover frequencies.
Every shade of bass tone variation is at your fingertips with the C-200 which offers 10-step rotary switch control for each channel, plus a choice of 200 Hz or 400 Hz turnover frequencies. These turnover frequencies provide a variation range of ±10 dB (at 100 Hz for 400 Hz turnover, at 50 Hz for 200 Hz turnover).
B) 10-step treble control, plus two turnover frequencies.
Likewise every shade of treble control is also available through 10-step selection for each channel, plus choice of 2,5 kHz and 5 kHz turnover frequencies that provide a variation range of ±10 dB (at 10 kHz for 2,5 kHz turnover, 20 kHz for 5 kHz turnover).
An independent switch is provided to turn the tone control circiut ON or OFF.
 Low and High Filters
A) low Filter with 18 dB/oct cut-off at 30 Hz
The C-200 has a built-in low filter which can cut off at 18 dB/oct, all subsonic vibrations below 30 Hz which are likely to cause intermodulation distortion.
B) High Filter With 12 dB/oct cut-off at 5 kHz
It also has a 12 dB/oct cut-off High Filter for 5 kHz which very effectively cuts frequency noise without essentially affecting music quality.


Plenty of Input/Output Connectors
A total of 10 inputs and 7 outputs are available which should meet the needs of any assortment of program sources or sound equipment test connections. Of these, 3 inputs Mic, Aux and tape Play, and three outputs, Tape rec, Main Output, and headphone are conveniently available on the front sub-panel

Three tape Recorders Can be Connected
Inputs and outputs for connecting three tape recorders are available, of which two can be used for tape copying from one tape deck to the other. This function can be carried on while simultaneously listening to a different program source, since an independent tape copy switch is provided.

Complementary-Symmetry Circuit Headphone Amplifier.
A direct-coupled, complementary-symmetry circuit amplifier, made available exclusively for headphone use, upgrades the quality of headphone reproduction that is available through the C-200.

Well Regulated Power Supply
The well-regulated power supply is fully capable of supplying steady, non-fluctuating voltages to all amplifier stages and it is totally unaffected by any kind of input signal. This power supply is also capable of well-regulated performance even against reasonable AC line voltage fluctiations.

Speaker Switching Through Optional Relay Box.
In installations wher the power amplifier may not be close at hand, speaker selaction is possible through the C-200's front panel Speaker Selector switches when a Relay Box (optional ) is connected.

Accuphase T-103

 Digital Display of Tuned Frequency and Correct Time
The Quartz Oscillator and Digital Counter Circuits enable digital display of the tuned frequency in 100 kHz steps and takes the place of the conventional dial pointer system. Although the tuned frequency is displayed in 100 kHz steps, frequency is continuously variable to permit perfect tuning of add sum radio station frequencies such as 25 kHz or 50 kHz.  A unit of 10 kHz is rounded to the nearest whole number of 100 kHz. For example, when the tuner is receiving a station with a frequency of 92,25 MHz, the digital display shows the rounded figure of 92,3 MHz. Also a tuned frequency of 93,22 MHz  is displayed as 93,2 MHz. Meanwhile, the Center Tuning Meter indicates accurate tuning points, and also shows on the meter scale, in frequency, how far the incoming signal may be out of tune.  The Digital Display works as a clock to show the correct time when the Power Switch is OFF. It can show the time even when the Power Switch is ON during radio reception by slightly pressing a button.

Front-End 5-Gang Tuning Capacitor Completely Rejects Interference
The front-end is virtually the “heart” of any tuner, it selectionate input signal, amplifiers it, and generates and delivers the intermediate frequency of 10,7 MHz to the IF section. Thus, the front-end design technique practically determines the performance of that tuner and its all-important sensitivity and interference rejection capabilities. The T-103 employs a 5-gang variable capacitor and achieves very excellent spurious noise rejection characteristics such as image rejection of 120 dB and RF intermodulation rejection of 75 dB. It also assures a very high sensitivity of 10,3 dBf.

Linear Phase If Circuit Features LC and SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) Filter Network
The 10,7 MHz IF signal that is generated in the front-end is fed to the IF circuit where it is amplified, its amplitude limited and adjacent station signals eliminated before it is introduced to the discriminator circuit. It order to reconcile the high selectivity and low distortion requirements of the IF section, a SAW filter, which is superior in selectivity and group delay time characteristics, is combined with LC Filters.
SAW is short for Surface Acoustic Wave and is a filter device that employs two set of electrodes with comb-like teeth that face each other. One side is excited by a piezo-electric element and the energy is trasduced to the other electrode by surface vibration to achieve electric conversion. It is a new filter device whose frequency add the element. It offers stable, long life performance. This tuner permits a choice of Normal IF bandwidth for low distortion, and Narrow bandwidth for sharp selectivity that effectively eliminates interference of closely adjacent FM stations.
 Low Distortion, Linear Phase FM Discriminator
The FM discriminator derives audio amplitude signals from frequency modulated input signals. Its output amplitude variations must be linear with the frequency variations of the input for low distortion performance. Linearity is checked as follows. A weakly modulated signal is swept and fed to the discriminator input. The output differential gain derived from the frequency variations is recorded and plotted  to measure the flatness of the differential gain characteristics which reveals its distortion ratio.  The circuit employed in the T-103 is a phase conversion type discriminator that derives the audio signal by multiplying the input original signal by the phase-shifted signal which comes through the quadrature network. Because of this newly designed wideband, linear phase shifter, practically no distortion occurs in the T-103 discriminator circuit.

PLL (phase-Locked Loop) Demodulator with Pilot Carrier Cancelling Circuit
A most advanced design PLL demodulator circuit which functions to separate the left-right composite signals for stereophonic reproduction is employed in the T-103. It features a new pilot carrier canceller circuit, which, together with the Linear Phase IF Filter and wideband discriminator, account for the very excellent specifications of 50 dB channel separation at 1 kHz, 45 db at 10 kHz and distortion ratio of less than 0,02% at 1 kHz stereo, which place this tuner in the highest grade class.

Multi-Function Meters
Two meters are available which provide four functions that can be selected by push-button control. Meter functions include Center Tuning with frequency scale for precise tuning, Signal Strength and Modulation indications and Multipath detection.  Input signal strength can be observed on a dBf direct reading scale, modulation on a full scale of 200% (deviation ±150 kHz) and clear mark indication of multipath condition that reveals the optimum FM antenna installation direction.

Other Functions
Other functions include a Noise Filter that helps to eliminate noise during stereo reception of weak signals, a Mode Switch to convert stereo reception to monaural , a Muting Switch to silence interstation noise and Dimmer Switch to dim the illumination of the digital display. Also available are three button switches, Hour, Minute and Check, which function to set the digital clock.
