What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Tannoy GRF Autograph Enclosure

As a fitting complement to the Tannoy "Fifteen" Dual Concentric Unit, our Research Laboratories now give you the expanding source Loudspeaker System. This unique enclosure embodies all of the well-known advantages of Horn Loading, e.g., excellent bass radiation and transient response, but suffers from none of the special distribution defects associated with conventional Horns. The overall efficiency of the system is also high with the result that not more than 3 watts peak are required for even the largest living room. The effective source size of the system varies with frequency, below 200 c.p.s. the L.F. Diaphragm of the Dual Concentric is horn loaded both front and rear; from 200 c.p.s. to 1,000 c.p.s. the front loading only is effective, thus giving a reduction in apparent source size. Above 1,000 c.p.s. the horn loaded high frequency unit integral with the Dual Concentric commences to radiate giving all of the advantages of a small non-directional source. The result of this entirely new form of horn loading is that while large orchestral and choral works have a sense of spaciousness and breadth, chamber music and solo vocal music possess that intimacy very necessary for their full enjoyment. Once again the Tannoy organisation with over a quarter of a century's experience in Sound Reproduction have produced a Loudspeakers System by which others will be judged.

Yamaha K-960 (1981)

when yamaha's audio engineers decided to design a truly high performance cassette deck, they didn't overlock any details. First, they chose a two-motor transport, but redesigned the system to eliminate the instabilities of conventional two-motor designs. For the Rec/Playback head, they used the finest material available - Sendust - formed by a unique Yamaha process for absolute purity. With 5-layer core lamination and low impedance design, this head is superior to ordinary types in all respects. And for the best possible dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio, the dbx system was included.
Add to this features like fine bias adjust, focus switch, metal compatibility and Dolby NR, and the result is the K-960 - a triumph of cassette deck engineering.

The 3BX is the most advanced dynamic range expander ever developed. It restores much of the drama, impact and excitement of a live performance by making loud passages louder and soft passages quieter.

Bass, midrange and treble frequencies are sensed in the music signal and expanded individually from extraordinary clarity of soud from even the most complex musical material. Three rows of LED's are used to monitor the degree of expansion in each of the three frequency ranges. An expansion level control lets you want, up to 50%. ANd, with the transition level control, you can adjust the threshold of expansion to vary the level above which the music signal is upward expanded. The 3BX is the most sophisticated and flexible dynamic range expander on the market. With, you can bring new life to your entire record and tape collection as well as dramatically increase your enjoyment of radio broadcasts. 3BX-R remote Control

2BX

If you want dynamic range expansion technology at a lower cost than the 3BX, then the 2BX is the model for you. Its somewhat simpler circuitry divides the frequencies into two bands instead of three. Music integrity of the bass and treble is maintained so that dynamic range of highly percussive music, either rock or classical, without causing the high and middle frequencies to track the low frequency dynamics of the music. The 2BX has two rows of LED's for monitoring expansion in each of its bands.

As with the 3BX, you can select the expansion you want (up to 50%) and adjust the transition level using the two controls provided for these purposes. Except for the most critical applications, the 2BX offers an ideal choice for increasing the dynamic range of your stereo system and your enjoyment of recorded music. Like the more expensive 3BX, the 2BX features PRE/POST recorder selection to allow you to expand either before or after the tape recorder connected to the 2BX. This tape loop replaces the one used on your receiver or preamp.

Like its 3BX and 2BX counterparts, the 1BX can increaste the dynamic range of music from records, tapes and radio broadcasts by a factor of up to 50%. Its RMS level detector incorporates an infrasonic filter to prevent mistracking caused by turntable rumble or record warp. Ten LED's monitor upward and downward expansion and, as with the 3BX and 2BX, a transition level is provided to select the level above which the music signal is upward expanded and below which it is downward expanded. because of its less complex circuitry, the 1BX is priced so anyone can affard the benefits of increased dynamic range. Roksan Shiraz

One of the most important aspects of Record Player cartridge design is the diamond tip of the stylus.
It is this jewel which has to retrieve information often represented by variations that measure millionths of an inch.
If the profile of this diamond is cut to the wrong shape it will damage records and reduce the amount of retrievable information.
The moving coil Shiraz cartridge has a stylus which we believe is the world's best diamond profile design.

The Swiss made Gyger II has a super fine line profile offering excellent tracking ability with stunning detail retrieval and low surface noise.
The body is made from solid aluminium alloy and fitted with a robust broadcast standard generator uniquely fixed to the body with three spikes giving it precise alignment and coupling without using distortion inducing adhesives. Excessive cantilever movements at certain frequencies are damped by the capacitors mounted directly to the generator over the coil where they accurately preserve the minute signal. The Shiraz produces relatively high output for a moving coil design, which is important for a good signal to noise ratio and channel separation, but requires careful matching to preamplifier phono stage.
Roksan have employed complex engineering techniques in the Shiraz cartridge in order to extract the most information from the groove of your records whilst never damaging the groove itself.

One of today's best speakers is famous for its highs. Another has been said to deliver the best bass and a third is loved for its mid-range performance.
