What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

AVID Volvere turntable

Magnificent sense of focus and stability whatever the material played.

The Volvere is an audio Turntable manufactured to extreme limits of precision, design and detail. There are many unique and novel features in this turntable and its design you to install the pick-up arm and cartridge of your choice.

The Volvere comes complete with a precision 6,7 kg aluminium platter, directly mounted onto Avid unique inverted bearing system, it is time to finally hear the music.

Precision machined balanced from a solid billet of aluminium, the platter is mass loaded at the edge, giving it a high rotational inertia. Coupling with the conical shaped bearing, there is no lateral movement as it self-centres. The cork mat offers a perfect interface to reflect vibration, keeping it in the record so it passes away more efficiently through the spindle. Around the edge we have employed a high-density rubber absorbing ring, acting as a peripheral wave trap for any minor vibration in the platter.

Motor - Volvere uses a 55mNm torque power motor. So what? Well, it is typically four times more powerful than motors used in common alternative designs. That extra power, along with our twin belt drive is put to good use, maximising the platter dynamics so music starts and stops like it should, without bass overhang slurring notes. Timing is superb, the all-important rhythm of music fully preserved and laid bare for you to enjoy.

Sharing the same philosophy as the reference models. The Volvere has a true audiophile engineered quality.

Such as Avid unique sapphire bearing and clamping system which efficiently channels unwanted vibrations away from the record to the chassis. This gives new clarity to your vinyl; the performance is not vailed but vivid and transparent.

Isolating the main chassis is critical to maintaining low colouration. We have employed a tripoint sprung suspension system with an ultra-low frequency, the result is information and resolution that's out of this world.

Power supply - Volvere enjoys a bespoke designed Power Supply for its high torque motor. Incorporating our latest generation DSP signal-generating interface as used in our reference turntables within its own casework and large mains transformer, this totally removes the vagaries of the mains power signal and allowing precise calibration of motor speed. Like all our turntables, each power supply is calibrated to the drive motor, tuning out vibration and maximising torque power, giving you clear, transparent sound with fast and controlled dynamic bass response, everything you need to enjoy your favourite music.

The Volvere offers people the chance to step into a new world of quality audiophile vinyl reproduction, that puts the music first.

Unison Research P70 amplifier

Fully balanced dual mono valves amplifier in Push-Pull

Designing the P70 has required about one year of work. The very first prototype has been developed in 2006, and it immediately showed all the critical elements related with this kind of design. It took time to find all the electronic solutions that have lead to the current circuitry.

The P70 is now an amplifier capable of delivering more than 70 W per channel into a 6   load, with Total Harmonic Distortion lower than 0,2% over the whole audio band. Its performances are comparable to those of a good single ended amplifier.

Structure of P70

The amplifier is laid out in dual mono configuration. Both the amplifier stages and the power supply circuits are completely independent. The signal path in the amplifier is fully balanced from the input through the output. This means that the signal at the output terminals is balanced with respect to the amplifier ground.

The P70 has four line inputs. All of them can be balanced or unbalanced, an external switch allows the selection. The volume potentiometer is a four sections motorised Alps blue series potentiometer. The selection of the channel is performed by four high quality relè.

All the operations of the amplifier, included the safety functions, are controlled by a microprocessor to ensure maximum reliability and intuitive user interface.

The amplifier itself is constituted by an input stage featuring two double triodes ECC83 and one double triode ECC82, and a power stage with two KT88 per channel.

The output transformer has been custom designed by Unison Research and ensure a bandwidth of more than 30 kHz at full power.

The preamplifier is constituted by a double differential pair in an original configuration. The two differential stages are DC coupled and allow to reach the needed gain. They are followed by a couple of cathode followers, again DC coupled, which guarantee the low output impedance required. The power supply for the whole preamplifier stage has a very high voltage, around 600 V.

The input stage has a local feedback, characterised by different feedback factors for the bias component and the signal. The two different values are set keeping into account the different need for precision on the value of the bias and of the signal.

The importance of a stable controlled bias in the amplifier is due first of all to the choice of the DC coupling between the stages and also to the need to allow the same signal excursion along the paths of the balanced signal.

The circuit we have designed amplifiers signals up to 200 V p-p. conversely, the feedback factor affecting the signal has been kept to the lowest possible value.

Thiel CS2.3 loudspeakers

The Thiel CS2.3 reflects our highest standards for sonic reproduction, regardless of price or class.

The 3-way CS2.3 incorporates many of the advanced driver, enclosure, and crossover design principles used in larger and more expensive Thiel models, but does so at a lower price and in a moderately sized cabinet. The CS2.3 employs a 1-inch metal dome tweeter coaxially mounted with a 3.5-inch midrange driver, and an 8-inch metal diaphragm woofer, with a passive radiator. Thiel’s unique  Coherent Source design provides greater realism The CS2.3’s outstanding performance is achieved in part by Thiel’s Coherent Source design technology which preserves the music’s time and phase information for much greater realism. Phase correct crossover design and time correct driver mounting provide natural three-dimensional imaging and greater clarity. The CS2.3’s high performance also results from our extremely thorough engineering, rugged construction, and use of unusually high quality components.

Features

A 3-inch thick baffle, 1-inch thick cabinet walls, and internal bracing greatly increase cabinet stiffness. By reducing unwanted vibration, both clarity and imaging performance are improved.

The baffle’s rounded edges contribute to very open sound by significantly reducing edge diffraction.

Thiel-designed and built drivers incorporate several innovative design techniques to reduce diaphragm resonances, increase output levels, and lower distortion.

Thiel CS1.6 loudspeakers

Coherent Source ® Loudspeaker

The CS1.6 is a 2-way floor-standing model incorporating several new innovative design techniques that greatly improve performance in a small, floorstanding loudspeaker. The 36-inch tall CS1.6 delivers a much purer and more open upper midrange response coupled with a sweeter and smoother high frequency performance than conventional two-way models. The new CS1.6 also offers a very high 90 dB efficiency to work well with lower amounts of amplifier power.

Completely Time and Phase Coherent

As with all THIEL loudspeakers, the CS1.6 is completely time and phase coherent for much greater sonic realism. THIEL’s Coherent Source® technology achieves the elimination of both time and phase distortions that cause alterations in the reproduced musical waveforms of most loudspeakers. Eliminating these distortions results in enhanced realism, clarity, transparency and immediacy as well as improved imaging and soundstaging in both the lateral and depth perspectives. Phase coherence is achieved by utilizing a sophisticated first-order electrical crossover system in conjunction with unusually wide bandwidth drivers. Time coherence is achieved by placement of the drivers on a baffle that is sloped at the correct angle to cause the sound energy from each to reach the listener at the same time.

Innovative Woofer and Tweeter Design

Much of the CS1.6’s outstanding performance is the result of its new high output, high efficiency aluminum dome, 1-inch tweeter and the innovative woofer diaphragm/voice coil design. Both drivers incorporate short coil/long gap, copper stabilized motor systems to greatly reduce distortion, employ metal diaphragms for very uniform Frequency response and clarity, and use Long Excursion Motor Systems for high Output capability.

High performance from a small, floor-standing loudspeaker

The CS1.6 is a two-way, floor-standing speaker system that incorporates THIEL’s latest innovative driver technology, rugged cabinet construction, and phase/time correct Coherent Source® design. Allmetal diaphragm, low-distortion drivers are used for outstanding tonal response and the advanced phase correct crossover design greatly improves spatial fidelity and clarity.

High output, high efficiency tweeter

The CS1.6 tweeter is a high output, high efficiency aluminum dome unit with long excursion abilities that reduce distortion and increase output capability. The new high frequency driver uses a short coil/long gap motor system design for low distortion, a copper sleeve to stabilize the strength of the magnetic field for reduced distortion, and practically unbreakable lead wires for increased reliability—features all shared with THIEL’s more expensive models’ tweeters.

Metal diaphragm, low distortion woofer

The CS1.6’s 6.5-inch woofer uses a much larger than normal diameter voice coil to greatly extend the woofer’s bandwidth for improved upper midrange performance. The large diameter coil distributes its driving force over a large area of the cone rather than concentrating it at the center. This coil design coupled with the woofer’s metal diaphragm increases the cone’s stiffness and frequency of unwanted resonances for very clear and open reproduction. The short coil/long gap, copper-stabilized motor system dramatically reduces distortion. Equally innovative is the woofer’s centrally located neodymium magnet that is placed inside the coil, rather than outside, creating an inherently shielded speaker to prevent picture distortion when placed near video displays.

Cabinet construction

The compact cabinet is built with a 2-inch thick front baffle and 1-inch thick cabinet walls for extreme rigidity to reduce unwanted vibration, improving clarity and spatial performance. The baffle’s rounded edges reduce diffraction effects for improved tonal, spatial, and transient performance, and its sloped front correctly time aligns the tweeter with the woofer. The unique slotted bass reflex system reduces unwanted port noise and grille loading effects.

Finished in the world’s finest woods

The CS1.6 is available in a wide variety of exquisite, real-wood, laminate, and painted cabinet finishes, finely crafted to enhance any home environment.

Tascam DA-45HR DAT recorder

Here's the new standard in audio mastering technology. The Tascam DA-45HR is the worlds first 24-bit high resolution DAT recorder. It combines stunning audio performance with a rugged transport, advanced features and backward compatibility with standard 16-bit DAT.

A full audio I/O complement and word sync in/thru provide all the tools to integrate into any analog or digital studio of any size. Perfect for studios and mastering houses, the DA-45HR bridges the gap between the 16 bit and 24 bit worlds with a familiar interface you already know.

The 24 bit format DAT uses the same DAT tape that is used in standard DAT recorders. In order to store the extra data generated by higher resolution recording, the tape speed is doubled in HR (High Resolution) mode. So, when you're recording in 24 bit HR mode, a standard 120 minute tape will last 60 minutes. Obviously, 24 bit DAT tapes will only play back on a 24 bit DAT recorder like the DA-45HR.

The DA-45HR can also run just like a standard 16 bit DAT recorder, running normal speed and writing 16 bits to the tape. Reading and writing is fully supported, so you won't have to dig out a different DAT recorder for anything else.

Specifications:

Tape Speed:  SP - 8.15 mm/s; HR - 16.3 mm/s

Recording Time (120 DAT):  SP - 120 minutes; HR - 60 minutes

Ortofon MC 20 Super II cartridge

A Completely New Design  - Inside and Out

As the fourth generation of Ortofon's best selling Moving Coil cartridge ever, the MC 20 Super II has a tradition as well as a reputation to live up to. Very conscious of this, the Ortofon engineering team has carefully evaluated every detail and available technology, to create a cartridge which, will deline the standard of sound reproduction in its class.

Fritz Gyger Type 1 Stylus With Improved Geometry and Ultra Stable Imaging

The FG Type 1 stylus benefits from the latest technological advances within diamond cutting and polishing. It is now possible to produce a very slim profile which will track even the highest frequency groove information. This is particularly important for the innermost turns of the groove. At the same time, the FG Type 1 stylus is distinguished by a larger than normal footprint for reduced distortion and record wear.

The audible results are crystal clear - a convincing and natural reproduction with a very stable definition or width and depth in the musical perspective.

The Ortophase Concept Adds a New Dimension to Analogue Sound

The inherently phase linear characteristics of the FG Type 1 stylus are further emphasised by the proprietary Ortophase concept which was introduced in Ortofon's famous MC 2000 cartridge.

Statistically reliable listening tests and extensive laboratory studies have demonstrated the importance of phase linearity in the reproduction of high quality audio.

But it has taken Ortofon's experience and manufacturing technology to make cartridges phase linear. Since a cartridge is a bandwidth limited transducer, a ruler-flat frequency response will not produce phase linear characteristics. Ortofon's research has shown that a very carefully calculated shaping of the amplitude response will result in a linear phase response.

This is the reason why frequency charts for the MC 20 Super II , show a slightly rising level above 5 kHz. Normally, such a response would be interpreted as a result of uncontrolled resonances. In fact, the natural resonances are under full control, and every Ortofon Moving Coil cartridge has been tuned by hand to ensure that it precisely meets the specifications of the Ortophase concept.

Non-Resonant Aluminium Cartridge Housing Prevents Sonic Colouration

The sound of the MC 20 Super II also benefits from Ortofon's new aluminium cartridge housing.

Internally, the magnetic assembly is securely screwed and glued to the body, and the precision fit of the two anodised extrusions makes the entire housing acoustically inert.

The large, solid upper plate makes it easy to achieve a perfect mechanical coupling to any high quality shell.
