KEF Reference Model Two loudspeaker

Reference Series Model Two (1994-99)

Model Two was a three-way floor standing system with a twin coupled cavity bass section. It offered a significant performance increment over the Model One and was the direct descendent of Model 103/4. It was ideally suited to use as a main speaker in small to medium sized rooms in a stereo or multi-channel system. It was updated in 1997 to include a boundary compensation device – switch-able attenuation of the bass output for use in small rooms or for positioning close to the room boundaries

Model Two Twin bass drivers and advanced,, large diameter force-cancelling rod provide prodigious levels of bass from a surprisingly slim enclosure. The Uni-Q mid and high frequency driver ensures that the sound stage is both wide and deep.

But if, like most people you tend to sit in different places, and want great sound for more than one person at a time, a pair of KEF Reference Loudspeakers will be music to your ears. The Uni-Q Drive Unit with its high frequency driver at the acoustic centre of the Mid-range cone turns the entire room into a "sweet spot".

Music in Minutes, not Hours.

It's the Uni-Q Driver Unit that makes KEF Reference Loudspeakers so simple to position. With ordinary loudspeakers their restricted "sweet spot" means that finding just the right position in your room can literally take hours. Furniture, curtains, walls, ceilings, even the sort of music you're playing can affect how they sound.

KEF Reference Loudspeakers on the other hand, with their ultra smooth off-axis response can be placed, plugged in and played in minutes. After all, it's the music that should be moving you, not the other way around.

Sound Where You Need It Not Where You Don't

It's not just the front of some loudspeakers that give out sound. A badly designed and ill-constructed unit can transmit vibrations through the back and the sides. This unwanted "cabinet Talk" can blur the stereo image and mar the reproduction of fine details.

At KEF we've virtually eliminated this problem in two ways. First, the drivers on the front of the loudspeakers are acoustically decoupled from the cabinet by a soft rubber mounting. And second, the internal bass units are joined back-to-back by a new and vastly improved force-cancelling rod that eliminates much of the vibration that can come from a bass unit and result in the cleanest possible reproduction.

Force-cancelling rods and acoustic decoupling reduce "cabinet talk" dramatically.

KEF Reference Model One loudspeakers

 Reference Series Model One (1994-99)

Model One was a three-way floor standing system with a single unit coupled cavity bass section. It offered refined musical reproduction in a compact enclosure. It could be used as a main speaker in small to medium sized rooms or as a rear speaker in a multi-channel system with one of the larger models at the front.

From the full three-way, three driver design with computer matched crossover to the coupled cavity bass loading. Model One are the very essence of all that we have striven for with our Reference Loudspeakers. They are perfectly suited to the smaller listening environment.

An Ability for Compatibility

Please don't think that just because we design and build KEF Reference Loudspeakers to such high standards that they are only suitable for critical applications like recording studios. Features like magnetic shielding and tonal accuracy make them ideally suited to home theatre systems. And unlike some so called "high end" products, they are quite at home with more affordable electronics. But of course, with loudspeakers of this calibre, the exceptional performance of more esoteric equipment is fully realised.

Every Part Perfect

Any loudspeakers is only as good as the sum of its parts. That's why, at KEF, we set rigorous standards for each and every component of our Reference Loudspeakers.

Just one example of this attention to detail is the Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) internal wiring. Different gauges for bass, mid-range and high frequency drivers ensure maximum information transfer room even the most delicate of signals and as you'd expect, we hand solder these cables to further improve sonic integrity. At the rear of the loudspeakers, the internal wiring joins heavy gold plated terminals with a bi-wiring option.

Even the plinths are examples of KEF's commitment to excellence. Mineral filled and formed from rigid polymer, they can be removed and filled with lead shot for additional stability. The elegant feet are turned from solid brass then heavily plated with gold. reversible and adjustable spikes are fitted to give excellent results on a variety of floor surfaces.

Krell LAT-1 loudspeakers

The Krell Lossless Acoustic Transducer (LAT) Series are the first loudspeakers engineered to Krell’s exacting standards. They are exceptional in their ability to provide accurate, high-powered reproduction without the distortions and information loss that occur in conventional loudspeaker designs.

The Krell LAT Series features massive aluminum construction. (The LAT-1 weighs approximately 250 lb.) The enclosures range from 0.75 to 1.5 inches in wall thickness. Internal midrange/tweeter sub-enclosures, where present, are also constructed of aluminum at least 1/4-inch thick. The cross-sectional shape of the enclosure is determined by a custom aluminum extrusion, the curvature of which is designed to absolutely minimize the effects of internal standing waves and external high-frequency diffraction

Such extensive use of aluminum may seem extravagant, but the sonic benefits are undeniable. Other than concrete and lead, which are not practical choices, aluminum possesses the ideal combination of structural rigidity and resonance damping characteristics. Within the audio passband, Krell LAT cabinets are sonically inert something that cannot be said about any wood or wood derivative

There is nothing “mystical” about the design of the Krell Lossless Acoustic Transducer. The goal was to design a mathematically correct loudspeaker that neither took anything away from nor added anything superfluous to the audio signal. The development of the Krell Lossless Acoustic Transducer LAT-1 was, at once, necessitated and made possible by the Krell CAST™—Current Audio Signal Transmission—technology. The LAT-1 is uniquely capable of reproducing the pure, exceptionally high resolution, wide-bandwidth signal delivered by Krell CAST components.

Separate crossover network assemblies are used for each driver complement (low, mid, and high). All circuitry is on 1/8-inch thick glass epoxy circuit boards with 4 oz. copper traces, ensuring low microphonics, low resistance, low inductance, and high current handling. 1st-order network at 300 Hz preserves transient response; 3rd-order Butterworth network at 2.9 kHz optimizes power response. Network inductors are all air-core pure copper designs, the largest of which is formed of 10-gauge wire, measuring 5 inches in diameter. Individually potted polypropylene WIMA capacitors are used in parallel to minimize inductance and resistance, and improve current handling. System impedance curve is extremely smooth, and sensitivity is a high 91 dB SPL at 1 meter with 1 W input. Custom gold-plated brass binding post terminals assure optimum signal transfer.

1-inch (25 mm) tweeter delivers flat response to 50 kHz. Central waveguide optimizes dispersion characteristics.

53/4-inch (15 cm) midrange features an advanced multifaceted cone that eliminates colorations induced by resonance modes. A proprietary suspension and extended voice coil assure extremely linear performance. D’Appolito midrange/tweeter configuration places the acoustic center at ear level and ensures pinpoint-accurate stereo imaging.

Custom-designed 8-inch (21 cm) woofer has extremely low free air resonance, a composite carbon fiber cone, and a butyl surround. At just more than four feet tall, the magnificent LS360 is the flagship of the Academy Series. Like the CS350, its five tweeters are wired to produce a Bessel Function array. The individual tweeter amplitudes and phase relationships are adjusted so that the array acts as a high frequency point source with a broad dispersion pattern. Long throw-soft suspension design

To avoid dynamic compression (the problem of having less and less relative bass the louder you turn it up), which is caused by the woofer’s increasing stiffness as it gols through its travel, a very long voice coil and a soft compliant suspension have been selected.

R.I.D.S.

Carbon Fiber Cone

Aluminum Phase Plug

by extending the pole-piece completely through the voice coil to the front of the speaker, heat is conducted away from the voice coil in both directions (providing a highly conductive material, such as aluminum, is used) and power handling is greatly increased.

Edge-Wound Copper Ribbon Voice Coil

ribbon wire is superior for conducting heat away from the center of the voice coil. It also puts more conductor in the gap than any other type of wire.

Tesla’s Finish

Tesla’s beautiful wood finishes (Rosewood, Teak and Ash) are all obtained using obiche wood. Obiche is a fast growing tree from the country of Cameroon, which has some of the best forest management in the world. In Cameroon, 80% of their forests are protected by law. Only 20% are open for commercial production, and in that 20% only one obiche tree is allowed to be cut per acre per year, and that tree must be over 200 inches in circumference.

This is a sustainable process so long as the trees are cut in this manner three will always be obiche trees.
