What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

A New Generation Of High Accuracy Technology

The Kappa woofer has a highly innovative cone that is injection molded from a mixture of graphite fiber and polypropylene. The advantages of these two materials - graphite for its stiffness and polypropylene for its inertness - compliment each other. During the high pressure injection molding process, graphite fibres are forced into the polypropylene in a radial pattern. This composite structure exhibits extreme stiffness and pistonic operation up to nearly 1 kHz, low mass, fast acceleration and very high self damping. The result is taut, precise bass reproduction at all volume levels, with sufficient bandwidth to permit very smooth transitions to midrange drivers. We use the same composite cone (and the rigid cast frame of the heavier 12" Kappa woofer) in our no-compromise Infinity Reference Standard, Series V and we believe that it is the most accurate cone made - at any price.


Our revolutionary Polygraph k superwoofer handles the critical mid-bass and lower midrange frequencies. The spectrum of 80 Hz to 800 Hz where half of all musical energy appears and where most speakers are at their weakest. This new 5" dome-shaped driver operates throughout this range and delivers a seamless, coherent performance. Allowing voices and instrumental textures to emerge with an airiness and clarity that is musically convincing.

Diaphragm construction on the Polygraph k is more akin to that of a grand prix car than a loudspeaker. It is a composite structure, made from unusually thin polypropylene supported by an extremely stiff lattice of graphite fiber. These two materials provide an unprecedented combination of stiffness, low mass and damping. The Polygraph's transient response and resistance to breakup rivals that of the most expensive planar drivers. Its power handling and dynamic range surpass them.

The equally important upper midrange frequencies are covered by another new dome design. Our 3" Polydome k uses an edgewound voice coil for high electrical efficiency and a new formulation of soft polypropylene for a combination of excellent self damping and speed. Our research paid off in a driver of exceptionally low coloration. This dome mates beautifully with the potent Polygraph k and, because of its size, can go low enough to meet the 10" and 12" kappa woofers in our more affordable 3-way systems.

The higher frequencies still belong to our famous EMIT electromagnetic induction planar tweeters. Now, however, there are two of them, and both feature evolutionary improvements first used in our IRS, Series V.

 


Compared to its predecessor, the Kappa EMIT has a kapton diaphragm of approximately half the mass, a lighter, thinner aluminum trace (analogous to the voice coil on conventional cones and domes) and new ultra-linear, ultrahigh gauss rare neodymium magnets. High frequency response has been extended to 44 kHz, and though you won't hear fundamentals up there, you'll find that kind of bandwidth makes a difference in reproducing transients and instrumental attacks. In our more expensive 8 k and 9 k loudspeakers two of these EMIT k's are used - one in front and one in the rear - for true dipolar dispersion and superior imaging.

 


Reference Standard 7 Kappa

The 7-Kappa is a stylish 12" three-way floor standing loudspeaker system. It's cast frame woofer utilizes our graphite fiber reinforced polypropylene cone coupled directly to the superb Plydome k, a 3" soft polypropylene dome. And improved EMIT k tweeter uses the same light diaphragm and neodymium magnets as our other Kappa speakers. These drivers are housed in a handsome cabinet which, with its rounded front and rear vertical edges, looks right at home with the finest furnishings. This combination of larger woofer and greater cabinet volume provides deeper, more powerful bass than the 6 k, along with greater power handling and dynamic range. The enclosures modest footprint contributes to ease of placement - even in confined living quarters.

Kappa is a concept and group of products. Five unique drivers and four loudspeakers that incorporate them. Kappa speakers differ radically from conventional speakers in appearance, underlying design philosophy , and certainly in performance.

A newly developed composite polypropylene/graphite fiber injection molded cone enables Kappa woofers to produce powerful, taut bass.

Reference Standard 6 Kappa

The 6 Kappa is a monitor-size loudspeaker that performs properly on the bookshelf or, with its optional pedestal, the floor. Low frequencies are reproduced by our 10" graphite/polypropylene woofer, mids are handled by our new 3" Polydome k and high frequencies are handled by our improved EMIT k. in virtually all aspects of performance, aside from extreme bass extension, the 6 k surpasses European and American monitor systems costing up to three times the price. The linearity of its Kappa drivers and their integration - through a high quality computer optimized crossover network - provide for notably higher resolution than is possible with conventional drivers. The 6 k is a fitting complement to the best electronics and signal sources and forms the foundation of an affordable perfectionist audio system.

It also the first precision cassette deck to incorporate the convenience of automatic revers, continuous playback and bi-directional recording. Significantly, it is the first time Dual's high level of performance and reliability has been available to cassette tape recording.

 


The 901's automatic reverse-system makes it possible to play both sides of a cassette without turning it over. Continuous-play additionally permits a cassette to repeat until the machine is shut off. Recording can be bi-directional.

A photoelectric monitor actuates reversal and shuts off without drag or friction in the tape.

Single-play belt-drive automatic turntable

Dual's first medium-priced single-play turntable is also the first Dual to use belt drive. The drive system consists of an 8-pole synchronous motor, developed especially for the 601, and a precision belt which runs directly from the drive shaft to a flywheel rotor beneath the platter. The motor's absolute speed constancy, its exceptional smoothness, and the isolation of the platter from the motor combine to reduce wow, flutter and rumble to an insignificant level.

Outstanding FM Tuner Design

From MOS FET RF front end amplifier to uni-phase IF filters and FM bandwidth selector the FM tuner section is designed for maximum performance. Outstanding FM quality with all types of broadcast signal conditions, whether you're in a weak, distant signal area or crowded, metropolitan dial location. An enclosure surrounds the MOS FET front-end circuitry including the integral 5-gang tuning capacitor and precision-built local oscillator. This combination results in higher frequency stability and exceptionally accurate dial calibration. In addition, the MOS FET front-end helps provide the V6 with its steep quieting slope, high interference rejection, high signal overload capability and low noise. It also assures high stability with both weak and strong signals.

 

High Selectivity, Low Distortion

The Sony V6 tuner section incorporates advanced circuitry to achieve excellent performance in the critical areas of selectivity, Total Harmonic Distortion and Stereo Separation. Our specially-designed, uni-phase 4-element ceramic filters are employed in the IF stage differential amplifier, together with five stages of limiters. This design assures a wide, flat passband, a smooth response slope and uniform phase characteristics. Which enables us to achieve high selectivity and low distortion, as well as excellent capture and Signal-to-Noise Ratios. And to maintain exceptionally wide stereo separation, we've included a Phase-Locked-Loop IC in the multiplex decoding stage.

To maintain consistently excellent FM sound quality, the V6 also includes a "selectivity switch", or FM IF bandwidth selector  - so you don't have to settle for less than the best, even under adverse signal conditions. In the "normal" position, the lowest distortion and widest stereo separation can be achieved. But when alternate channel interference is a problem, the "narrow" position provides higher selectivity , lower noise.

 

Accurate Tuning

But the best in FM performance and value doesn't stop here. The V6 assures the ulmost tuning accuracy and convenience, too. First, there's the precision of frequency linear FM and AM dial calibration, which makes station selection easy. Next, there's the convenience of smooth, flywheel-coupled tuning action, plus the silence provided by interstation muting as you tune up and down the band. And to help you pinpoint the desired station, the V6 also features a center-station tuning meter, with a second meter that can be switched for signal strength indication.

 


Low-Noise Preamp Circuitry

The direct-coupled preamplifier section, which includes our newly developed, low-noise transistors, provides wide, flat frequency response for all high-level inputs, exceptionally accurate RIAA equalization and excellent Signal-to-Noise Ratios with all input sources. The advanced preamp circuitry also yields a phono overload capability of 200 mV - assuring more than adequate headroom with any of today's high-output phono cartridges. And with any type of cartridge you use, you can rely on precise RIAA equalization (±0,5 dB) which is maintained through a special DC negative feedback circuit, independent of voltage fluctuations.

 

Precision Control

The V6 provides for flexible sound system operation and precision controls. The clean, logically-arranged control panel allows precise sound adjustment, with maximum control convenience. A large easy-to-grasp, stepped-attenuator volume control has 41 detent positions, for smooth, yet positive control action. The studio-type volume control also eliminates tracking error between channels, a common problem with conventional potentiometers. The result is accurate left/right-channel level adjustment. For precise tonal compensation, the V6 features negative-feedback, stepped-attenuator bass and treble controls, each with 11 dent positions. There's also a tone control defeat position, for absolutely flat response with the tone controls switched out of the circuit. And for effective program-source noise elimination, the V6 is equipped with high and low filters. A loudness compensation switch is included, too.

When switched in, the loudness circuit provides both high and low frequency boost, for realistic tonal balance at low volume levels.

 

Rugged Power Performance

The V6's direct-coupled DC power amplifier section delivers clean, rugged power. Enough power to drive even inefficient speaker systems to realistic volume levels. With plenty of power reserve to handle sharp transient attack tones with clarity, and without overload clipping. At all output levels and with all types of musical content, the V6 delivers authoritative, well-defined bass, and clean, transparent midrange and treble.

To accurately monitor power being fed to speakers, the V6 features two power output meters, which indicate output levels in watts per channel, from 0,03 to 200 watts. The highly visible, easy-to-read meters offer maximum overload waring. In addition, they help achieve accurate stereo-channel balancing at both high and low output levels.

Accuracy is typical of the entire power amp design, from its differential comparator input stage to its parallel connected, true complementary-symmetry output stage, with positive and negative power-supply voltages. A design which assures low noise, high phase linearity and especially impressive low-frequency performance. The V6 power amp section also incorporates a high efficiency, high-regulation toroidal-coil transformer and two 10,000 µf capacitors. This combination assures the utmost operating stability and provides the V6 with a clean, effortless "feel"  of power across the entire frequency spectrum

A precisely aligned dynamic design, blending common-sense innovations with proven technology, gives the Vandersteen Model One many advantages:

By correcting for "real-world) conditions - such as cabinet losses, thermodynamic losses, and active/passive transfer anomalies - the Vandersteen Model One function more like an ideal speaker than do conventional designs. Such performance is possible because computer analysis guided the driver selection process, and each speaker was tested for minimal cone break-up, internal diffraction, and out-of-band phase irregularities. An innovative circuit design permits these drivers to operate in absolute phase with each other, preserving the dimensions of live music. The result; a level of sonic purity and listening enjoyment that far exceeds the modest cost.

 


The Active Components

Custom manufactured drivers (an 8" die-cast basket with curvilinear polycone woofer and 1" dual chamber polymer dome tweeter) ensure linear operation well beyond the cutoff frequency for near seamless blending. The woofer system, including rear slot loading, comprises a fourth-order filter. The tweeter incorporates low moving mass for excellent transient response and extended bandwidth.

 

The Crossover

The transient perfect first-order dividing network uses air core inductors with polypropylene and polycarbonate capacitors in the signal path. Phase compensating networks allow ideal transient response, impedance-compensating networks avoid the frequency response irregularities associated with typical crossovers.

 


The Construction

The Vandersteen Model One is constructed entirely from a wood product far denser than particle board to minimize induced resonances. FFT (Fast Fourier Transform)analysis during all stages of assembly guarantees that each speaker matches its mate within .5 dB for precise imaging.

Yamaha CA-800 amplifier

Yamaha CA-800 stereo integrated amplifier offers, at a surprisingly agreeable features. Like the more expensive Yamaha CA-1000, the CA-800 has been created with emphasis on its primary function, that is to amplify the stereo signals from different program source components with the least possible distortion and without any other form of undesirable coloration. It accomplishes this objective by the use of a direct-coupled OCL complementary power amplifier, a plus/minus dual power supply system, a 3-stage direct-coupled tone control amplifier, and many other advanced features. You will note immediately that the CA-800 is designed with typical Yamaha attention to fine detail.

 

Direct-Coupled OCL Pure Complementary Stereo Power Amplifier for High Power and Low Distortion

The power amplifier of the CA-800 is the most advanced made today. This is the all-stage direct0coupled OCL pure complementary design which provides flat, linear amplification over an extremely wide bandwidth. Power for its operation is derived from an advanced plus/minus dual power supply system that combines an over-sized transformer and a pair of large 6,800 µF capacitors. Moreover, the power supply system drives all amplification stages, with the exception of the power amplifier, at a constant voltage. Such advanced design characteristics contribute greatly to the CA-800's low-range frequency response and stability, as well as to excellent performance specifications. These include RMS continuous power output of 45 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 20 - 20,000 Hz, both channels driven at 0,1 T.H.D., or 55 watts into 8 Ω , 1 kHz each channel driven, also at 0,1% T.H.D..pure, clean sound reproduction - quite enough to fill a large listening room - is only one solid reason to choose the CA-800.

 

Class-A Stereo Power Amplifier for Even Lower Distortion.

While the CA-800 is complete with a large stereo power amplifier of the Class-B operation like any other stereo amplifier available today, it also haas an exclusive feature; a switch to alter the circuit configuration of the power amplifier and convert it to a quality Class-A power amplifier. The difference is significant. A Class-B amplifier is a very effective design for transitor-type amplifiers, and delivers a high power output. A Class-A amplifier, in comparison, is less efficient, yet compensates for its inefficiency by virtually eliminating crossover distortion, which is the major source of distortion, which is the major source of distortion in the high frequency range for a transistor amplifier.

These figures underscore the importance of a Class-A amplifier; the RMS continuous power output is reduced to 10 watts per channel into 8 Ω , both channels driven at a T.H.D. of 0,1% over 20-20,000 Hz. That same distortion figure is reduced to 0,02% or less over 20 - 20,000 Hz at an output of one watt, or even to 0,015% - the very limit of the measuring instruments themselves - at 20 kHz at an output of 8 watts. Obviously, there is simply no better amplifier type to reproduce the transparent, delicate sounds of string instruments at a low volume level. Another conclusion is equally apt; the CA-800 is a most versatile stereo amplifier.

 

Four-Stage Direct-Coupled Phono Equalizer Amplifier for Transparent Tonal Quality

Since the phono equalizer enables the reproduction of the most popular source of music, the disc record, it is the key component of any hi-fi preamplifier, in the CA-800, this component is of the very highest quality, an advanced 4-stage direct-coupled amplifier employing selected low noise transistors. The virtures of this amplifier are three-fold; One; it is capable of handling a phono input signal of up to 310 mV, or approx. 100 times greater that what is required to drive it to the full output (input sensitivity is 3 mV). This capability is significant insomuch as that it practically exceeds the wide dynamic range offered these days by the latest and most advanced disc cutting techniques, as well as the new and improved pickup cartridges. Thus, you can be assured that every subtle shade of sound and every powerful burst of sound cut into your records will be reproduced without distortion. Secondly, the phono equalizer has an excellent Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 80 dB or better. This also contributes to the transparency of reproduced sound. Thirdly, absolute accuracy in the reproduction of stereo records is assured, since the phono equalizer provides an almost identical facsimile of the RIAA disc playback characteristics, keeping deviation from it to within a tolerance of ±0,2 dB.
