What two voice coils do for our remarkable woofer.

It has always been impossible to get good transient response, sufficient power, an acceptable level of efficiency and extended bass range from an enclosure of reasonable size. Till now.

Now William Watkins has found, and Infinity has made excellent use of, the solution to problems of a speaker's fundamental resonance, back-EMF, and the resultant impedance peak. Watkins's invention, available in Infinity speakers and no others, is a woofer with two voice-coils, called the Infinity-Watkins Dual-Drive Woofer. It works like this:

Down among the frequencies where rising impedance and falling response were inevitable before, the second voice-coil takes over. In the region of resonance, it presents a low impedance path to the amplifier.

Now the speaker can make use of the amplifier's power at low frequencies, because back EMF is reduced. Now input rather than inherent resonance can control the cone. Now extended bass response and accurate transient performance can co-exist beautifully. Now you can enjoy the superb reproduction of the Dual-Drive Woofer in a compact speaker, the Quantum 4.

Is this any way to treat a revolutionary woofer?

In our top-of-the-industry Quantum Line Source, the Infinity-Watkins is the Oscar Peterson of woofers; it can loaf, and still out-perform the rest of the world. We've made it responsible for response only from its phenomenal floor of 18 Hz to an easy 200 Hz.

As used in the Quantum 4, the revolutionary woofer handles a frequency range from 30 through 600 Hz. We give the cone a special treatment that greatly increases the ratio of its stiffness to its mass. This damping treatment eliminates a variety of distortions, circumferential modes and resonances that otherwise could blur the bass and muddy the midbass. And low frequencies from the Quantum 4 are exciting in their combination of clarity with power.

Infinity wrote the book on the electrostatic tweeter. It was a story of triumph over adversity. Now we/ve gone the electrostatic on better.

Electrostatics, with their low-mass diaphragms driven uniformly overall, delivered sweet undistorted reproduction of high frequencies. But they were subject to voltage break-down and tended to "beam" sound narrowly.

Our dream of creating a trouble-free magnetic counterpart of the electrostatic became a beautiful reality after we hit on the use of the magnetically powerful rare-earth material called Samarium Cobalt.

A new technological advance Q-woofer

Infinity's new bass driver varies the mass of its moving element with frequency. At low frequencies the specially treated woofer cone is coupled to its butyl surround for extended response. As frequencies rise, the light cone mass is progressively uncoupled to improve transient response and raise efficiency in the upper bass range.

The voice-coil former, or bobbin, is of phosphor bronze. Like the aluminum traditionally used, it helps dissipate heat, but unlike aluminum it does not create reverse eddy currents that slow down rise-time. The result is noticeably better transient response. And the voice-coil is unusually long, allowing long excursions while maintaining linearity.

You don't listen to a pair of Qb speakers. You listen to the live performance through them

When you comparison-test the Qb against any other speakers near its price, do this: Raise the Qb off the floor, as its optional pedestal does - but don't hem it in between bookshelves. As with all good speakers, the Qb should be placed a couple of feet  away from the wall. Use familiar records. Switch between speakers frequently. The Landmark EMIT

EMIT - Infinity's exclusive new electromagnetic induction tweeter is a significant advance in the technology of high frequency transducers. You'll find EMIT in our Quantum Line Source. You'll also find it in Qa.

The magnetic analogue of an electrostatics - as well as to cone and dome drivers. EMIT radiates sound from an ultra-thin and light plastic film diaphragm. Because it is driven over all of its effective radiating area, it is always controlled by the input signal. And because it is lightweight, it can be controlled accurately and precisely, providing a smooth, extended frequency response and excellent transients.

Performance of cone and dome drivers, on the other hand, is inherently limited by their technology.

Driven locally by a voice coil, accurate control of the radiating area is limited by the cone/diaphragm stiffness, as well as by its weight. Cones and domes therefore are limited in their transient response and in their ability to effectively couple to the air. These limitations are most evident at high frequencies.

EMIT, with a low-mass diaphragm driven over its entire area by powerful magnets of rare-earth Samarium Cobalt, achieves superior levels of transient response and accuracy.

Musically, this translates into a clarity and transparency, a filigree-detailing of mid and high frequencies that is unsurpassed by any other driver in the world.

EMIT is sound years ahead of other drivers in other ways as well. Its phenomenal power capacity derives from several EMIT ingredients; its impedance, which is almost pure resistance, allowing the amplifier to drive it more easily; a unique "voice-coil" which is etched directly onto the surface of the diaphragm, allowing efficient heat dispersion - all of these result in a speaker that can reproduce exceptionally high sound levels.

Our Q-woofer

You'll find advanced Infinity technology in our Q-woofer as well. A specially-formulated QX™ material damps out spurious resonances that cause coloration in other cone drivers. Our low-mass, high-excursion Q-woofer delivers tight, extended and startlingly accurate bass as well as extraordinary midrange - the kind of midrange associated with 3 and 4-way systems.

A heavy butyl surround couples its mass progressively to that of our light weight Q-woofer cone ay low frequencies. This result in superior transient performance in the upper part of the woofer's range without sacrifice of low frequency response.

A unique voice-coil former, or bobbin, in the woofer is of phosphor bronze. Like the aluminum traditionally used in voice-coil formers, this metal aids in heat dissipation; but it avoids the reverse-eddy currents that slow down rise-time.

Therefore the rise-time of our Q-woofer is extremely fast, bass transient response is phenomenally accurate.

About Power and Positioning

The Qa was designed to be suitable for low-powered amplifiers. Yet if you have a $10,000 system you'll find that Qa can handle your highly-powered amp - to and beyond any comfortable living-room listening level. Put a pair of Qa's in your study as second speakers (then don't be surprised when you start spending more time in your study.)

A word about placement. Don't hem in the Qa between bookshelves, but  do raise it off the floor. Our optional pedestals do the job easily and optimally - about twelve inches worth. And when you place these speakers a couple of feet away from the well, remarkable things happen;

A sense of spaciousness will "appear" around the musicians; all frequencies will "open up" with a very real sense of depth; no voices or instruments will be thrust unnaturally forward from the speakers or made unnaturally larger than reality - but those musicians farther away during the original performance will be perceived as farther from the listener.

Everybody knew for years it was impossible to get acceptable efficiency, good transient response, enough power, and extended bass range out of any enclosure of reasonable size. So every speaker system in the world represented a serious compromise of one or more of those desirable characteristics. A New Generation Of High Accuracy Technology

The Kappa woofer has a highly innovative cone that is injection molded from a mixture of graphite fiber and polypropylene. The advantages of these two materials - graphite for its stiffness and polypropylene for its inertness - compliment each other. During the high pressure injection molding process, graphite fibres are forced into the polypropylene in a radial pattern. This composite structure exhibits extreme stiffness and pistonic operation up to nearly 1 kHz, low mass, fast acceleration and very high self damping. The result is taut, precise bass reproduction at all volume levels, with sufficient bandwidth to permit very smooth transitions to midrange drivers. We use the same composite cone (and the rigid cast frame of the heavier 12" Kappa woofer) in our no-compromise Infinity Reference Standard, Series V and we believe that it is the most accurate cone made - at any price.

Our revolutionary Polygraph k superwoofer handles the critical mid-bass and lower midrange frequencies. The spectrum of 80 Hz to 800 Hz where half of all musical energy appears and where most speakers are at their weakest. This new 5" dome-shaped driver operates throughout this range and delivers a seamless, coherent performance. Allowing voices and instrumental textures to emerge with an airiness and clarity that is musically convincing.

Diaphragm construction on the Polygraph k is more akin to that of a grand prix car than a loudspeaker. It is a composite structure, made from unusually thin polypropylene supported by an extremely stiff lattice of graphite fiber. These two materials provide an unprecedented combination of stiffness, low mass and damping. The Polygraph's transient response and resistance to breakup rivals that of the most expensive planar drivers. Its power handling and dynamic range surpass them.

The equally important upper midrange frequencies are covered by another new dome design. Our 3" Polydome k uses an edgewound voice coil for high electrical efficiency and a new formulation of soft polypropylene for a combination of excellent self damping and speed. Our research paid off in a driver of exceptionally low coloration. This dome mates beautifully with the potent Polygraph k and, because of its size, can go low enough to meet the 10" and 12" kappa woofers in our more affordable 3-way systems.

The higher frequencies still belong to our famous EMIT electromagnetic induction planar tweeters. Now, however, there are two of them, and both feature evolutionary improvements first used in our IRS, Series V.

 

Compared to its predecessor, the Kappa EMIT has a kapton diaphragm of approximately half the mass, a lighter, thinner aluminum trace (analogous to the voice coil on conventional cones and domes) and new ultra-linear, ultrahigh gauss rare neodymium magnets. High frequency response has been extended to 44 kHz, and though you won't hear fundamentals up there, you'll find that kind of bandwidth makes a difference in reproducing transients and instrumental attacks. In our more expensive 8 k and 9 k loudspeakers two of these EMIT k's are used - one in front and one in the rear - for true dipolar dispersion and superior imaging.

 

Reference Standard 7 Kappa

The 7-Kappa is a stylish 12" three-way floor standing loudspeaker system. It's cast frame woofer utilizes our graphite fiber reinforced polypropylene cone coupled directly to the superb Plydome k, a 3" soft polypropylene dome. And improved EMIT k tweeter uses the same light diaphragm and neodymium magnets as our other Kappa speakers. These drivers are housed in a handsome cabinet which, with its rounded front and rear vertical edges, looks right at home with the finest furnishings. This combination of larger woofer and greater cabinet volume provides deeper, more powerful bass than the 6 k, along with greater power handling and dynamic range. The enclosures modest footprint contributes to ease of placement - even in confined living quarters.

Other monitor speakers certainly have efficiency and power-handling capability. But we believe none also has the reference Studio Monitor's sweetnes in the upper register, oppen detail in the midrange, and definition in the mid and low bass.

Not the optional matching pedestal, may also be  used with the Reference Standard 1,5 ; Reference Studio Monitor ,RSb, RSA or Rseto raise the speaker to the proper height and angle for optimum sound dispersion.

Infinity RS II

 Infinity Reference Standard II - A less expensive version of the worlds most accurate speaker.

Since its inception, Infinity has been setting new standards of accuracy in music reproduction. Its speakers are designed to, as closely as possible, translate acoustic theory into practical reality.

There are two theoretically ideal ways of propagating sound in a room environment; the line source and the point source.

The Infinity Reference Standard, introduced in 1980 as a nocompromise state-of-the-art. Speaker system, approximates line source propagation, in which the sound source must be infinitely long vertically.

The vertical dimensions of the Infinity RS is nearly equal to the vetical dimension of most rooms, approximating ideal line source conditions in a closed environment. Horizontally, the driver is so narrow at all frequencies in the audio band that its audio dispersion is essentially complete.

Now we are pleased to announce the Reference Standard II, a practical simulation of point source theory.

A true point source would be an infinitely small, pulsating sphere, with all frequencies radiating equally in all directions.

In the Reference Standard II, point source technology is simulated by decreasing the size of the radiating area as the frequency increases.  Thus, the source is always small compared to the wave length of the sound being radiated.

The Referency Standard II inherits some of its design configuration and technologies directly from the Infinity Reference Standard. However, its price, unlike the the $20,000 IRS, is affordable to most serious audiophiles.

Its diffraction wing design and dipole drivers in the high and mid-frequencies create an arresting depth, breadth and clarity of musical image.  Its dual 10" woofers in a new Infinity/Watkins woofer/subwoofer configuration are in their own enclosures, and incorporate rool-offs at different crossover points. This yeilds deep strong bass, as well as exceptional tautness and clarity in the midbass.

 Diffraction wings and what they do.

The elegant curve of the reference Standard II enclosure wings is precisely calculated to minimize the distortion caused by diffraction.

In an ordinary speaker sound waves propegated by the drivers bounce off the front of the enclosure. These diffracted waves interfere with the principal wave, causing cancellation "dead spots" in the listening room, and out-of-phase distortion.

As a result, the music is blurred and sounds muffled; the stereo image is cinfused, inconsistent, or absent altogether, depending upon one's listening position in the room.

As with the $20,000 Infinity Reference Standard, the Reference Standard II diffrection wings are mathetically curved so that the diffraction effect is minimized. The small portion of the sound waves which is diffracted  is propagated to the sides and back. Cancellation "dead spots" and out-of-phase phenomena are effectively eliminated from the listening area.

This creates an illusion of the three dimensional imaging so accurate the listener can "place" every instrument in the orchestra; front to rear, as well as left to right.

For example, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" side 1, reveals a panorama of sound with breathtaking impact.  As the distant helicopter approaches and lands, it seems to travel through the top to the bottom of the speaker; you almost feel the wind from the chopper blades as it taxis past. The children's voices, their English accents clearly discernable as they sing. Are heard, not on a single plane, but in layer after layer of sound, clearly defined in space.

 The Two Woofers

Two ten-inch woofers in the RS II are identical - yet they are used independently. Although they both operate in the very lowest bass ranges, one rolls off at 60 Hz, the other at 125 Hz.

This is a new embodiment of the Infinity/Watkins principle; instead of two voice coils on one woofer, there are two woofers operating together at certain frequencies, yet rolling off independently.

The two woofers - each in its own enclosure - are mounted in a special master enclosure of oak vener, suspended within the diffraction wing and stepped forward to assure precise phase relationship with the other drivers.

The Three Midrange Drivers.

The three five-inch midrange drivers are dipoled by leaving their backs open, allowing the back wave to complete the point source radiation pattern.

Employing a unique arrangement, the midranges crossover at two different frequencies. The upper most and the lowest operate up to 1500 Hz, while the central midrange works up to 3 kHz.

From a technical point of view, this produces distinct advantages.

Better midrange coupling is achieved in the critical lower midrange area. And, by spreading out the crossover frequencies, response is made uniform and the directivity index is made to correspond to point source radiation within the range of utilization of each separate driver.

 Polypropylene cones; the advantages are obvious.

Although much has been written sbout the many advantages of polypropylene over paper cones, and cones of exotic materials, its advantages are clearly evident upon first hearing.

This extremely light, yet very stiff material with no intrinsic sound of its own, responds uniformly and instantly to the input signal, producing music that is astonishingly clear and accurate.

It is impervious to heat, moisture and the wear and tear that shortens the life of traditional cone materials.

Polypropylene cones are used in the woofer and midrange drivers of the Reference Standars II, as they are throughout the Infinity RS series speakers.

Our design objective for the reference Standard II was to utilize audio technology developed for the massive Infinity Reference Standard to create a much smaller, much less expensive speaker system -  a system more technologycally advanced, more aesthetically appealing in its price range than any other speaker available.

 The Two EMIT tweeters.

The EMIT electromagnetic induction tweeters found in the RS II are considered the state-of-the-art. Tweeter by critics the world over.

EMIT, with its powerful samarium-cobalt magnets and an almost zeromas etched planar diaphragm, is unique in its ability to combine exceptional powerhandling capability with extreme delicacy - through a superauditory 32 kHz.

The Reference Standard II has two EMIT tweeters configured in a dipole pattern; one firing forward and the other facing the rear.

It should be noted that EMIT tweeters are used, in varying configurations, in every Infinity Reference Standard  and RS series speaker.
