What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Mission 767 loudspeakers

It has been a long standing dream of many loudspeaker manufactures to design a system large enough to produce the full bandwidth of a music program. Such a system, however, needed to maintain the accuracy, transparency, and imaging precision of a physically smaller transducers. Most attempts to date have been relatively unsuccessful due to the complex parameters involved in the loudspeaker/room interface, and the seemingly contradictory requirements of bandwidth against sheer perceived accuracy of the loudspeaker in its environment.

Mission's engineers were intrigued by this dilemma. Research and development work cantered on drive unit and cabinet technology in order to resolve the conflicting requirements of low distortion and coloration, optimum dispersion characteristics, and high power handling.

 

Mission and Cyrus loudspeakers possess an unusually wide frequency bandwidth capability for their physical sizes. To bring the realism of live music into the home environment, the bandwidth must extend down to 20 Hz. This requirement has become even more relevant with the advent of digital recordings

In addition to the fundamental requirement of being able to physically move more air, Mission's research showed certain phase characteristics should be maintained to reduce the amount of phase distortion and perceived group delay in the listening room environment.

 

The ensure correct low frequency reproduction, it was necessary to use dedicated transducers for frequencies below 80 Hz. As well as obvious limitations in using passive cross-over networks at very low frequencies, no phase or group delay alignment is within engineering parameters in an affordable consumer home system. To eliminate these problems, Mission's engineers have implemented an active Low Frequency Alignment Unit (LFAU).

 


Two 6,5 inch mid-range units utilized in conjunction with the Super Elliptical Impedance Transformed high frequency unit produce the full bandwidth of 80 Hz to 20 kHz. The simple, high quality crossover network allows bi-wiring or bi-amping configurations. The lower two octaves of the frequency range are covered by two 8,25 inch drive units powered by a Cyrus based stereo amplifier and an active filter designed to integrate the low frequency and the mid-range units. This active network was designed to drive the LF units down to their free-air resonance frequency of 18 Hz, while compensating for the inter-driver phase shifts and group time delays. This system realizes a totally phase coherent, minimal group delay low frequency energy propagated in "time" with the full spectrum of the music program.

 

Controls are provided for further adjustment of this system to the particular room environment. These adjustments fine-tune the amplitude and roll-off points of the low frequency signal without upsetting the phase characteristic of the system.

 

The 767 is constructed throughout in 25 mm  MDF. It is visco-elastically damped on all surfaces and braced at strategically sensitive points to produce a cabinet free of any coloration or measurable resonances. Modal analysis technique was utilized to develop a cabinet design with a fast energy dissipation, non-resonant enclosure.

 

The transducers used in the 767 are Mission's state-of-the-art. Drive units utilized in the top of the line Mission and Cyrus loudspeakers. The drive units are placed symmetrically in a vertical array to produce a dispersion characteristic designed to minimize floor and ceiling reflections (these two reflection sources are partly responsible for corruption of stereo imaging), while giving a frequency coherent wide lateral dispersion. This configuration was used successfully in the Argonauts for many years, and more recently in the Cyrus 782 loudspeaker. These drive units were developed through many years of research in materials and electromagnetic technologies, as well as ongoing refinements in construction and close tolerance engineering.

Tuner controls operations

Because the ST-R50 and AX-S50 utilize an electronic synthesizer tuning system, remote control can be employed to select or change stations by manual Up/Down tuning or by pressing the selector button corresponding to the preset station on the tuner.

Preamplifier control operations

Besides raising and lowering of amplifier volume, the remote transmitter can be used to switch modes from Tuner to Tape, Aux to Phono, etc. Another remote function sure to come in handy at times is the -20 dB muting facility.

Other controls

Cassette deck transport modes and turntable start/cut operation can also be performed. As a useful feature to prevent misoperation of the remote unit ahile the system is making a recording for example, the transmitter unit can be independently switched off.

Aiwa AP-D50 turntable

Direct-Drive Turntable

A completely new concept in hi-fi component design; the world's first automatic front-loading turntable. Whether you're aiming for convenience or performance, the ingenuity of the AP-D50 is hard to beat.

 

Operation

First set the speed and record size. Then after placing the disc on the loading tray, press the Play/Cut button and the disc is loaded into playing position by the motorized mechanism. Another touch of the Play button and the arm is transported over the record and play begins. As a safety device returns the arm to the armrest before permitting the loading tray to come out, the Eject button may be pressed either during play or after play has completed.

 

High performance direct-drive motor

For accurate rotation speed completely free from cogging or other undesirable effects, the AP-D50 employs a 4-phase 8 -pole linear torque motor with a frequency generator type speed detector. This compares the motor rotation speed to a standard rotation frequency and makes needed connections virtually instantaneously. A heavy 1,3 kg aluminum diecast platter contributes to the very low 0,028% (WRMS) wow and flutter, and rumble, another result of improved motor design, is a superb 75 dB (DIN-B).

 

Low resonance concrete resin sheet material

Even if a turntable chassis material has a high degree of resistance to acoustical feedback, its effectiveness can be drastically lowered by overlooking the section of the platter which actually contacts the record itself, the rubber mat. At the AP-D50's turntable sheet is a part of the auto-loading mechanism, Aiwa engineers were able to take advantage of the need for rigidity to develop a new material. This "concrete resin", a formulation of CaCO₃ and glass fiber in a polyester base, is able to offer superior resistance to low frequency resonance, enabling the AP-D50 to absorb larger doses of acoustical feedback with no detrimental effects on tone quality.

 

Adjustable Pitch Control

When singing or playing along with a musical instrument, some variation in playback speed may be desired to raise or lower the record's pitch. The pitch control knobs on the AP-D50 enables the unit's speed to be varied by as much as ±3%. The 4 rows or stroboscopic speed indicators at the platter edge are useful in setting speed to precisely 33 or 45 rpm.

 


Full manual operation

It's difficult to conceive of a turntable which can be operated manually without raising the dust cover, but the AP-D50 can do just that. An arm carrier lever located on the front panel permits manual, positioning or the arm when raise off the record surface. Naturally, hydraulic arm cueing is controllable from the front panel in both manual and auto modes of play.

 

Photoelectric auto return mechanism

Most turntables employ a mechanical device which activates auto return operation by detecting a buildup of stress on the arm; this stress unfortunately has the side effect of increasing distortion. The AP-D50 employs a sophisticated non-contact photoelectric system coupled to the arm's own motor, thus assuring uncompromised high performance.

 

Sensitive J-shaped arm with removable headshell

Designed for accurate tracking in the record groove with minimal tracking error and distortion, the low mass aluminum pipe arm takes a universal headshell for easy cartridge conversion. A high compliance MM cartridge with diamond stylus is included as standard equipment.

 

Repeat operation

With this button pressed in, record play will be repeated continuously until halted manually. An LED indicator has been provided to show that the repeat switch is set to on.

 

Exclusive rec-sync feature

Aiwa SD-L50 cassette deck

A front-loading model with all the features of full-sized units, the SD-L50 nonetheless is an incredibly compact 25 cm wide by 10,7 cm high, making it one of the most compact cassette decks currently available.

Circuitry and head design have been reinforced to give superb sound quality from the new high performance metal tapes.  IC logic controls with a stroke of just 0,3 mm contribute to the positive feeling of operation, while the dual motor drive transport holds wow and flutter to below 0,04% (WRMS). The deck can also be set to perform automatic rewind/repeat play of one side of a tape up to 8 times or until halted manually. For accurate record level settings, 2 rows of 12 LEDs display peaks in 3 colors from -20 to -2 dB (green), 0 to +4 dB (yellow) and +6 to +10 dB (red)

Aiwa ST-R50 tuner


 Quartz Synthesizer Tuner

You won't find a tuning knob on the ST-R50, because there's no more tuning capacitor to be rotated. All tuning is performed automatically and electronically by means of an voltage-sensitive varactor diode that employs a PLL quartz synthesizer for extra accuracy. Up to 10 MW, FM and LW stations may be programmed at random into the memory circuit and recalled instantly at the touch of a button. Manual tuning is also possible by holding in the up or down control until the desired station frequency is displayed. For optimum sound quality, a quadrature detector circuit with 6-element ceramic filters having flat group delay characteristics achieves a high sensitivity.

A newly developed IC in the limiter and detector reliability. A PLL IC in the MPX demodulation stage provides stable FM stereo switching unaffected by temperature, humidity or aging. The ST-R50 can also be combined with a couple of Aiwa optionals that make it perhaps the most convenient all-around versatile tuner available. When connected to the optional MT-50 timer unit, two On/Off cycles can be programmed at any time desired, and if the power remains on, preset stations may be changed automatically up to 6 times in a 24 hour period. The RC-R300 wireless remote transmitter/receiver unit (also optional) is capable of performing manual Up/Down tuning or selection of preset stations from up to six meters (20 feet ) away.

Aiwa SA-C50 pre amp

Stereo Preamplifier

Designed as a capable complement to SA-P50, this preamplifier can boast of adding minimal sound coloration and noise to the original signals.

Low harmonic distortion  - only 0,008% - for Tuner, Aux and Tape In is maintained for Phono as well. Use of a new low noise, low distortion IC and ultra low noise transistors in a differential amplifier configuration has made possible the superb 88 dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio with MM cartridges. RIAA deviation has been held to a close ±0,2 dB (20 - 20,000 Hz) byuse of specially selected polypropylene capacitors and high precision metal film resistor elements.

Moving coil cartridges can be directly connected to the unit without the need for an expensive transformer or head amplifier. Selector button on front panel may be switched to MM or MC, thus permitting quick changeover from one type of cartridge to the other. As connections for two tape deck units (Tape 1, 2) are also provided, in-system dubbing may be performed without changing cable connections. Another important feature is the use of a muting relay circuit which effectively silences On/Off switching during mode selection operation and protects the speakers.

DC Stereo Power Amplifier

A high-efficiency power amplifier capable of unmistakably "full-sized" performance, the SA-P50 puts out a muscular 50 Watts per channel into 8 ohms, form 20 to 20,000 Hz, both channels driven, with no more than 0,03% Total Harmonic Distortion .

Coupling capacitors, a cause of phase distortion in the amplifier's negative feedback loop, have been eliminated. An FET in the first output stage and dual transistors in the second stage combine to form a 2-stage differential configuration having low distortion and superb temperature stability characteristics. Super linear transistors (SLPT) with an ultra high-speed frequency cut-off and ring emitter transistors in the final stage make up a pure complementary SEPP OCL circuit with exciting, low distortion reproduction at any output level. For stable power regulation essential for reproduction of dynamic musical passages, power supply is composed of a high-efficiency toroidal power transformer and two large capacity 15,00 µF electrolytic capacitors. A newly developed IC and relay function to suppress "pop" noises during On/Off switching; the self-resetting protection circuit also protects the power transistors from shorts in the output and speakers are isolated if potentially damaging DC is detected at speaker output terminals.

The Epicure Eleven, a step closer to reality 

The Epicure Eleven, the ultimate bookshelf speaker, incorporates superior linearity excellent dispersion and nearly perfect system phasing. The Eleven delivers flat, undistorted linear frequency response from 38 to 20,000 Hz.

To achieve concert hall clarity ina compact speaker, the Eleven combines, in a ported system. Epicure's celebrated 1-inch air-spring tweeter and a specially fabricated controlled-excursion 6-inch low mass woofer. The tweeter provides unparalleled power response in the mid and upper ranges. In fact above 1800 Hz, nothing in the industry is capable of finer performance.

The key to the Eleven's overall superior sound is the unique relationship - a mathematical one, computer-calculated - between its 6-inch woofer and its bass port. It's not difficult to produce superb mid-range power response and dispersion with a driver this size. But to achieve those qualities in a compact speaker, and at the same time reproduce the earthshoking tones of the lowest bass frequencies, has never before been accomplished.

The sophisticated engineering design of the Eleven works in this way. From its crossover frequency at 1800 Hz to as low as 100 Hz, the Eleven's 6-inch woofer produces dynamic sound and dispersion by itself. Below 100 Hz and continuing through to as low as 38 Hz, the bass port - in essence an audio-active tube of air critically aligned within the speaker - serves to augment the power response of the woofer. The Epicure Eleven Tweeter

Here is a 1-inch, air-spring tweeter unlike any other in the industry.

There's a balanced, low-mass voice coil assembly. Not centered semi-perfectly, but centered perfectly. And not fixed with the usual silicone, but rather with a vastly superior substance, a space-age fluid that no one else in the business uses. The result is lower distortion in the midrange, particularly noticeable in the voices. And the tweeter produces nearly hemispherical dispersion across most of the audible range.

The Epicure Eleven has a specially fabricated controlled-excursion 6-inch low-mass woofer. Its low-vacuum deposit cone is light and stiff.
