What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Sherwood S-3000 tuner

FM Tuner

The 5-3000 has been styled and designed primarily as an operating mate for the Sherwood Model 5-1000 amplifier, however it has operating flexibility which will work effectively with practically any good high-fidelity amplifier system.

The Model 5-3000 tuner can be used either in its self-contained metal cabinet (for open-shelf or table-top mounting) or the cabinet can be removed and the tuner built into your custom cabinetry. Refer to section under "Custom-Panel Installation" for further details.

Acoustic Research AR-14 loudspeakers

The AR-14 closely approaches the musical accuracy of the most expensive AR speakers at a significant saving in cost. It combines the superior bass performance of the AR-12 with the energy response of the AR-16.

The AR-14 employs a 10-inch acoustic suspension woofer installed in a cabinet of the dimensions normally used for our 12-inch units. The result is bass performance with extended range and very low distortion that is more than adequate for all music except perhaps the most demanding organ or electronic music recordings.

An appropriate balance between flat energy response and flat anechoic response enables the AR-14 to reproduce music with a high degree of accuracy under most listening conditions. In fact the AR-14 is uniform in its radiation over nearly as wide a range and solid angle as are AR's most expensive speakers.

This uniformity of response has been achieved by means of a crossover network designed with the aid of AR's large reverberant chamber located at our British laboratories.

This new chamber, together with the polyhedral chamber at our factory near Boston, permits a new level of reliability in the measurement of a speaker system's total energy output. In the case of the AR-14 these measurements have enabled AR engineers to directly evaluate the effects of the crossover network on the energy output of the system and to refine its design with considerable precision.

 


The cabinet molding of the AR-14 has purposely been kept small in order to eliminate audible interference effects that are  normally caused by sound waves being reflected from cabinet projections. The AR-14 shares the appearance design of the AR-11, AR-10Ï€ and AR-12 speaker systems.

 

A two-position switch mounted on the rear of the cabinet provides a means of altering the contour of treble energy above 4000 Hz. The Normal switch position should provide the most accurate results in most listening rooms. The "Decrease" setting is useful in compensating for the occasionally harsh effects of more reverberant, or "live" , rooms.

Acoustic Research AR-12 loudspeakers

The performance standard for the AR-12 is the same as for our AR-11 speaker system; reproduction of the music program source with the maximum degree of accuracy. While the AR-11 is as accurate a loudspeaker as our engineering skill enables us to make, with the AR-12 cost is an additional consideration. The main differences between the AR-11 and the AR-12 are that the bass response of the AR-11 extends approximately 1/2 octave lower, and the AR-12 is lower in cost.

The AR-12 employs a 10-inch acoustic suspension woofer installed in a cabinet of the dimensions normally used for our 12-inch units. The result is superior bass performance, with extended range and very low distortion, that is more than adequate for all  music except perhaps the most demanding organ or electronic music recordings.

A new midrange driver has been developed especially for the AR-12 with a rear cavity specifically tailored to provide the correct stiffness, restoring force, and controlled damping required for optimum response at lower midrange frequencies. It combines a 1-inch voice coil, for high power-handling ability, with a relatively small 2-1/4-inch cone for excellent dispersion over the driver's entire operating range. A greater volume of sound is therefore available with no sacrifice in musical accuracy.

The combining of a relatively large voice coil with a small cone does not require, not is ot desirable to use, a conventional "spider" for centering the voice coil. An entirely new method of centering has been devised for the AR-12 midrange, using magnetic fluid to "float" the voice coil in the gap between magnet and pole-piece.

The use of magnetic fluid suspension, in turn, provides two additional benefits. Improved linearity of motion results in lower distortion than a design using a conventional spider. And the magnetic fluid also acts as an efficient path for conducting heat from the voice coil to the speaker's magnet assembly and metal frame, where the heat is readily absorbed. This yields an additional increase in power-handling ability. The diagram on the ither side of this sheet gives more information on this point.

The magnetic fluid suspension has also been incorporated into the 3/4 inch hemnispherical dome highrange driver of the Ar-12 for increased power-handling ability.

 Preamplifier Section

Equalizer Stage

One problem that is not taken care of by many preamplifiers is transient response because their measurements depend on the input being a sine wave. Unfortunately, this simple wave is not the same as the comlex signal produced by live music. The real dynamism of live music comes from its many abrupt and impulsive sounds. It is this dynamic sound that can cause distortion due to poor transient response in all circuits if nothing is done to prevent it in the design of the equipment. In the equalizer stage in particular this problem of transient response must be handles because this is the input stage for the music signal. If the signal is distorted in this first stage it gets worse and worse until the distortion destroys all listening pleasure.

Precise equalization is one of the very important features of a preamplifier. To avoid any distortion that might come from saturation in this equalizer stage model 725 has a big phono overload capacity of 200 mV at 1 kHz and 930 mV at 10 kHz. The phono overload capacity gets larger with the rise in frequency so that it is the same as that of the RIAA  equalization curve. RIAA deflection is ±0,5 dB from 30 to 15,000 Hz. The signal to noise ratio is better than 70 dB.

 

Tone Control

The Tone Control is put in model 725 so that each individual can adjust the tone to fit his own taste in music. The Tone Control has click stops and each stop represents 2 dB up or down. High grade components have been selected for the Tone Control so there is always exact response, low distortion and high stability.

 

Transient Killer

Model 725 has been equipped with the Transient Killer to prevent the usual disturbing noise that you hear when an ordinary amplifier is switched on or off. The Transient Killer in this model guarantees that there will be no irritating sounds to disturb your music enjoyment every time you turn the set on.

 


Power Amplifier Section

Model 725 is the fruit of Onkyo's tireless efforts to reduce distortion of any kind in the amplifier section of its equipment. Distortion is reduced in model 725 because of the quasi complementary SEPP, direct coupled and differential amplifier circuitry. The computer was used to analysis the very complex music signal and this analysis extended outside the audible range. This extensive measurement was necessary because Onkyo found that the very low frequencies have a distinct influence on the music even though they cannot be heard by the human ear. Ordinary amplifiers do not take these very low frequencies into consideration and consequently cause a lot of Intermodulation Distortion.

The statistic for this amplifier are very excellent. It is capable of delivering a continuous power output of 22 watts per channel at 8 ohms. The Total Harmonic Distortion of model 725 is rated at less than 0,05% at 10 watts, 1 kHz.

 whether used at full power or very low output the same low distortion rate is maintained. Stability is enhanced by the use of a differential amplifier, instability in an amplifier will put DC voltage on the loudspeaker terminals which will causes excessive distortion.

Fluctuations in the power supply voltage and temperature can also cause distortion but these fluctuations are solved by the differential amplifier. The OCL circuitry is an added reason why this model has less distortion, a flatter response over the whole frequency range and especially good damping in the lower frequency range.

 


Top Panel Connectors and Large Heat Sink

Model 725 has all its connectors centralized on the top panel so that connecting and disconnecting is simplified. This is especially true if the amplifier is placed against a wall. Instead of having connectors in the rear panel this model uses the rear panel as a large Heat Sink which helps to protect the power transistors as well as the rest of the amplifier. This is important because of the change in the capacity of the transistor. However, because of the large Heat Sink in model 725 it always stays cool no matter how long it is used at full power.

 

Multi step-up terminals

The design of model 725 is unique in that its preamplifier and main amplifier can be used separately. This design opens up new possibilities for the music lover because model 725 can easily be the base of a multi-amplifier stereo system if either model 624 or 613 is added. These two model are dividing amplifiers and they do the job of separating and amplifying the signals before they are passed on to the tweeter, mid-range speaker, and woofer. If only one extra unit is added your system is up-graded to a bi-amplifier system. If two units are used your system will become a tri-amplifier system. The top panel of model 725 makes connecting and disconnecting very easy because all the terminals are located on the top of the  unit and not in the back as is the case with most units.

JVC Super Servo Frequency Generator, Photokinetic End-of-Play Mechanism

 

We've used the JVC Quartz Turntable technology to great advantage in the QL-A7, then have added a unique arm operation mechanism to increase operating convenience. This model has our Photokinetic End-of-Play, device so that when the stylus reaches the lead-out groove on the record, the arm is lifted free without a moment's hesitation, and then the platter is stopped. One advantage is that the JVC design does not link the arm with the platter in any mechanical way thus the high performance standards of each are never threatened.

 

JVC Quartz for the Musical Truth

Accurate platter rotation is maintained in the QL-A7 with the JVC Quartz servomotor that's virtually impervious to influence from the environment. Changes in temperature or humidity, voltage fluctuations and even circuit warm-up changes never bother it. Thermal drift is less than 0,00005%/C and stability against voltage rises/drops as wide as 10V is complete.

Since the QL-A7 has JVC's DC servo-motor, precision Quartz oscillator, no-error JVC Super Servo Frequency Generator and a proven direct0drive mechanism designed and produced by our own engineers and craftsmen, its superb original performance is retained over the years.

 


Heavy Platter and JVC's DC Servomotor

The best Quartz servosystem in the world deserves only the most precise of motors. Since we were the ones to original Quartz servo control for turntables, it was only right that we should make a precision DC servomotor to go along with it in the JVC QL-A7. it features powerful torque of more than 1 kg.cm and is assisted for smooth rotation characteristics by its built-in JVC Super Servo FG. A JVC exclusive "super-finish" technique ensures mechanical precision and long-term durability and includes, in part, the amazing 0,6 µ roundness in the vital motor shaft. The platter of the QL-A7 weighs a heavy 2,2 kg (4,8 lb) with its thick rubber mat and has a large 350 kg-cm moment of inertia. These figures translate, of course, into superb musical performance by reducing flutter and keeping the speed constant even in the face of suddenly increased loads. Particular care has been taken to ensure that motor-caused resonance never occurs to spoil your music.

 

JVC's Photokinetic End-of-Play mechanism

Yes, the QL-A7 is a full-fledged manual turntable. But it also includes a feature that automatically lifts the tonearm and stops the platter the moment the stylus enters the innermost lead-out groove of your record. Our unique Photokinetic End-of-Play device works independently of the platter system, it is formed of a photosensor and a sophisticated mechanism including a plunger for no-contact, error-free operation. Benefits you'll enjoy include reduced tonearm mass for improved arm sensitivity, compared with a conventional tonearm auto mechanism. For convenience there are a Cue Lever and a record Size Selector Knob up front.

 

Touch Sensors for Speed Change

Stopping the platter or changing speeds from 33-⅓ to 45 rpm is a breeze. Simply touch the appropriate Touch Sensor button - the lightest of touches will do - and you get immediate results. The built in mechanical brake with an electromagnetic plunger stops the platter in less than 1,6 seconds with no wobbles, and speed-up changes are so fast you can hardly see them happen.

 

One-Row Strobe

Only one row? No more are needed since the neon strobe lamp is synchronized with the built-in Quartz oscillator. Unlike strobes which are synchronized with power-line AC frequency, this system avoids any chance of fluctuation. You select the speed and the one row of strobe dots is all you need to visually confirm its accuracy.

 


New Gimbal Support

The tonearm support system on the QL-A7 is our New Gimbal Support offering improved sensitivity, much lower mechanical error and higher rigidity than conventional types. Rare on automatic turntables, it includes an Arm Height Adjustor with an adjustment range of from 42,5 to 50 mm so that you may use any cartridge whatever its height, and Oil-Damped Cueing.

 

Solid Construction to End How.

Since the motor and tonearm of the QL-A7 are firmly mounted in the solid, "howl-free" cabinet neither the sonic bombardment coming from your speakers non the vibrations of footsteps on the floor can reach the stylus to cause musical degradation. One further JVC touch is the suspension system which effectively soaks up all vibrations - vertical and horizontal alike  -thanks to a rubber foot design to effectively prevent muddy or boomy bass reproduction. The insulators are height adjustable to help you keep your JVC Quartz QL-A7 strictly on the level.

Fully Automatic Mechanism
