What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

JVC KD-95 cassette tape deck

The best of JVC's new lineup of high-performance cassette decks, the KD-95 features nearly all the JVC exclusives introduced on preceding pages. Its electronics and mechanism are truly sophisticated and provide the widest dynamic range, lowest distortion and least noise yet achieved in a stereo cassette configuration. Its outstanding specifications are ample evidence of a JVC engineering triumph.

Mechanical Accuracy

The JVC KD-95 employs two motors - a precision frequency-generator (FG) servomotor for capstan drive and a DC motor for reel drive, all operations are undertaken electronically by the JVC developed TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) IC which activates three electromagnetic plungers; a light touch of any control button allows you to move from one mode to another without having to go through Stop. Also, the deck's large flywheel - 80 mm in diameter - is coupled to the capstan to help reduce wow and flutter. And finally, a professional touch has been added to the KD-95; its head assembly has screws which allow the user to adjust the head azimuth, height and tilt.

Sophisticated Electronics

We used the best of JVC electronics technology in designing our top-of-the-line KD-95. first, its recording amp is formed of the 2-stage direct-coupled NPN configuration featuring high linearity. Second, its equalized circuit is of the DC feedback type for excellent transient characteristics and unmuddiet lows. Third, convenient Recording Equalizer and 400 Hz Signal Oscillator circuits are included.

Recording Conveniences

Inn JVC's "Real Time" pause mechanism, the heads are in contact with the tape even in the pause mode. The Timer Standby facility inside the KD-95 permits repeated, interrupted record and play - a feature rarely found on cassette decks. Also offered are two recording circuits, one for Mic/DIN input and the other for Line input, which allow you to mix microphone sounds with other sources. Plus a pair of rack-mounting brackets, which is a standard accessory in every KD-95.

Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck

The ultimate innovation in cassette technology - precise, fully automatic playback head azimuth adjustment. Optimum reproduction quality in both forward and reverse playback modes.

In a slightly different genere than the luxurious 1000ZXL, the Dragon is undoubtedly the finest cassette deck available. It represents the culmination of Nakamichi's vast technical resources and experience, retaining the basic uncompromising Nakamichi standards of performance through use of such innovations as an Asymmetrical, Dual-Capstan Double-Direct-Drive Transport, a Discrete Three-Head configuration, very high quality record/playback amplifier circuitry and, of particular interest to perfectionists, our unique NAAC (Nakamichi Auto Azimuth Correction) for the ultimate in playback performance from both sides on any tape.

Proper azimuth alignment is one of the most important factors in achieving the best possible cassette reproduction quality. For this reason, several Nakamichi cassette decks offer either automatic or manual adjustment of record head azimuth. Ideally, however, playback head azimuth should be adjustable so that even tapes recorded on other decks will be reproduced with the recorded frequency response and sound quality fully intact. Commercially available music tape, tapes borrowed from a friend, tapes in which the shell has warped slightly (a common occurrence) - all actually require some degree of playback head azimuth alignment to provide the best possible reproduction quality. Further, inaccuracies in cassette shell symmetry result in completely different azimuth alignment requirements in forward and reverse on auto-revers decks, often causing a significant variation in sound quality. All these points and problems LED Nakamichi to the development of the world's first fully automatic playback head azimuth alignment system NAAC, and its incorporation into this fine deck.

The Dragon's unique double direct drive system employs two Nakamichi quartz PLL servo Super Linear Torque DD motors (one for each capstan) so that wow and flutter are essentially eliminated while maintaining perfect transport stability in both forward and reverse directions. Auto reverse operation has been made available only in the playback mode so that the superb performance of the Discrete Three-head System is not compromised. Of course, full provision is made for left and right channel bias and record/playback level adjustment. All the Dragon's performance features also mean that the built-in Dolby C-type noise reduction system operates under ideal conditions for the best performance. Likewise, heads, mechanism and amplifiers are all the best available, as are features such as the microcomputer-controlled, real-time mechanism control system proven in other Nakamichi decks. Convenience features include Auto Rec Pause, where the deck automatically enters the pause mode during recording if a blank interval of 30 seconds or longer is detected in the source, switchable MPX and subsonic filters, easy cueing, and a dual-speed auto fader function, for customized recording with professional fade-in/fade-out results.

Straight, Short Arm for Openness and Transparency in Sound

Accurately capturing the audio from the source is the imperative first step in delivering authentic, true, Hi-Fi sound. The flagship GT-5000 adopts a short, straight arm designed to deliver superior rigidity as well as balance of weight and mechanics which results in improved traceability. A rigid mechanism with simple construction means there is no need for an inside force canceler weight.

Customised Belt-drive for Stabilising Platter

The customised belt-drive mechanism of the GT-5000 minimises the influence of the motor cogging and excludes feedback control for an open and smooth sound. The original GT concept utilised the notion of internal mass to counter feedback control. This is built upon with the GT-5000 which negates feedback control through the belt-drive.

Magneplanar MG-II loudspeakers

We'd like to have a word with you. It's about Magneplanar loudspeakers. The word is "revolutionary". Revolutionary design concept; revolutionary sound reproduction, revolutionary beauty. In fact the Magneplanar system is patented because of the unique principles on which it operates. The Speaker are designed to be seen and not heard. So if you're listening to music, all you hear is music, not annoying vibrations from speaker cabinets and cavities. The first time you see Magneplanars you'll know something new is going on. They look like beautiful decorator screens. Or handsome room dividers. We know you've heard the word "revolutionary" before. But you've never heard anything like Magneplanars before.

What is Magneplanar?

The Magneplanar loudspeakers is a totally new type of loudspeaker. It is neither a cone type speaker, nor is it an electrostatic. The actual speaker itself is only about 1/8th inch thick. Its construction consist of a large area (planar) permanent magnetic field with a very thin film diaphragm stretched over it. The audio current is carried by conductors which are attached to the diaphragm in a zig-zag fashion.

As the audio current passes through the conductors, the interaction between the magnetic field around the conductors and the permanent planar magnetic field under them causes the entire diaphragm to pulsate. This creates sound waves in the air which is the sound your hear.

A few of the important characteristics of Magneplanars

Purely resistive impedance for ideal amplifier loading

Puts out same sound front and back (bi-polar radiator)

No cavity or cabinet wall resonance to colour sound.

Superior transient response throughout entire audio range due to low mass of diaphragm

Distortion level far below other loudspeakers because of complete control of diaphragm

Can be placed to look more like part of furnishings than a loudspeaker

56" long, 1-1/2" wide tweeter section provides horizontal sound dispersion previously unattainable

Fantastic power handling capability

Large radiating area provides width and height and depth of sound only equalled by live performances

The bi-polar radiation of Magneplanas provides a means of optimizing stereophonic and quadraphonic sound imaging.

Vandersteen Model 3 loudspeaker

The Aligned Dynamic Design

The Model Three uses the proven Vandersteen Aligned Dynamic Design to optimize the dispersion and transient accuracy of the drivers while maintaining the input signal's time and phase integrity. The drivers, their positioning and their associated minimum baffles were developed with the aid of FFT computer analysis to minimise diffraction, cone break-up, multi-driver interference and out-of-band phase irregularities. The construction, alignment and positioning of the driven allow a point-source wave front and maximize the phase coherence of the loudspeaker at the listening position.

The Aligned Dynamic Design is used for the Model Three due to its many potential advantages:

Precise, more dimensional imaging and a wider listening area

A greater flexibility of placement options within the listening room and better "real word" transient response due to the lack of out-of-phase rear-wave cancellations.

A high level of genuine transparency and detail typical of planar speakers without the dege-clamping distortion that exist in all rectangular electrostatic and planar panels

Increased efficiency and improved dynamic range.

The components used in the Model Three combine durability and strength with innovative design and construction. The metal-alloy dome-tweeter is a dual-chamber design to improve range and linearity. It is critically damped to extend the high frequencies past audibility without the excessive ringing associated with open or underdamped metal dome tweeters. The alloy used for the dome was chosen for its superior strength and resistance to break-up compared to common dome materials.

With the application of years of experience in FFT computer analysis and research into the negative effects of diffraction, a unique, proprietary midrange driver has been developed that outperforms previous designs in several significant parameters. In conventional cone midrange, the acoustic energy from the back of the cone immediately strikes the front of the driver's magnet assembly and is reflected back through the cone and into the listening room.

This distorted secondary signal created by the internal diffraction smears the sound of the driver and inhibits true transparency. The frontal area of the magnet assembly on the Model Three midrange has been minimized through the use of advanced materials and construction techniques to reduce internal diffraction and the resultant distortion to inaudible levels. With the elimination of this distortion, the sound of the Model Three is cohesive and smooth with a level of inner resolution unequalled by other dynamic loudspeakers.

The active acoustic coupler and woofer use costly cast-metal baskets rather than more common stamped baskets. The cast-metal baskets inherent rigidity and superior vibration control increase cone movement accuracy and reduce sympathetic resonances for cleaner and more natural sound. Filled polycones are used on the woofer and midrange to insure higher internal stiffened and greater neutrality than woven plastic or treated paper cones. The stiff, low weight polycones resist flexing under all drive conditions for lower distortion and increased detail.

The dual-spider active acoustic coupler accurately complements the woofer to reduce box loss, thermodynamic loss and active/passive transfer nonlinearities. This novel Electro-Mechanically Optimized Woofer System provides powerful, detailed and extended bass response as the Model Three operates much more closely to the ideal than any conventional ported or passive design.

The crossover in the Model Three is comprised of transient-perfect, first-order networks designed to preserve the phase integrity of the music. It is compensated to allow the drivers to operate in absolute phase with each other for more precise and stable imaging than conventional multi-way speakers using out-of-phase drivers. The crossover's computer grade components, including low impedance air-core inductors and high-quality film capacitors in the signal path, are hand soldered on a double-sided, plated-through PC board tested to insure less than 0,1 dB deviation from a reference circuit. Custom 6N wire with polypropylene dielectric is used for internal wiring to maximize signal transfer.

The crossover is engineered for bi0wiring with a stereo amplifier or two monoblock amplifiers or passive vertical bi-amplification with two identical stereo amplifiers or four identical monoblock amplifiers. Inputs are heavy-duty screw terminals.

The baffles holding the drivers of the Model Three are as small as possible to eliminate virtually all of the early reflections that affect dynamic speakers with conventional flat or low diffraction baffles. Reducing both early reflections and edge diffraction improves the imaging and enhances the openness and transparency of the speaker.

The enclosure of the Model Three is constructed of MDF, a wood product far more dense and acoustically inhert than conventional particle-board. Broad-spectrum, low -Q resonances are controlled so as to cancel rather than become additive.

Hirsch-Houck Laboratories further noted. "The dynamic range, distortion, flutter and frequency response performance are so far beyond the limitations of conventional program material that its virtues can hardly be appreciated".

The Sony TC756-2 features a closed loop dual capstan tape drive system that reduces wow and flutter to a minimum of 0,03% , logic controlled transport functions that permit the feather-touch control buttons to be operated in any sequence, at any time without spilling or damaging tape: an AC servo control capstan motor and an eight-pole induction motor for each of the two reels; a record equalization selector switch for maximum record and playback characteristics with either normal or special tapes; microphone attenuators that eliminate distortion caused by overdriving the microphone pre-amplifier stage when using sensitive condenser mics; tape/source monitoring switches that allow instantaneous comparison of program source to the actual recording; a mechanical memory capability that allows the machine to turn itself on and off automatically for unattended recording; and a full, two-year guarantee.

In addition, the TC756-2 offers 15 and 7-1/2 ips tape speeds; Ferrite & Ferrite 2-track/2-channel stereo three-head configuration; and symphase recording that allows you to record FM matrix or SQ** 4-channel sources for playback through a decoder-equipped 4-channel amplifier with virtually non-existent phase differences between channels.

The Sony TC756-2 is representative of the prestigious Sony 700 Series - the five best three-motor 10-1/2" reel home tape decks that Sony has ever engineered.

Sansui SR-535 turntable

Automatic Direct-Drive Turntable

Sansui wants everyone to enjoy hi-fi music with the minimum possible noise, distortion and inconvenience. That's why the Sansui SR-535 automatic direct-drive turntable puts the emphasis on pure hi-fi performance and true handling ease. Accuracy of platter rotation, and a strong, anti-howl construction characteristics in the musical department. The direct-drive motor is a high-torque type and the special tonearm has a unique support to ensure delicate performance. Record reproduction is always clean and pure.

One simple control, the Auto/Manual Play Lever, does all the work. Put a record on the platter, set the record-size selector and pull the lever once; the tonearm is lifted, moved and gently lowered to the lead-in groove, when the record ends, the arm is returned to its rest and power shuts off automatically. The same lever permits manual play when desired. More convenience is offered in the Repeat facility permitting you to select one to five replays, or infinite replay.

Automatic Operation

One control knob does it all. The jumbo-sized Auto/Manual Play Lever has three positions of Manual On, Off, Auto Start/Stop. For a single automatic play, you simply place a record on the platter and gently pull the Auto/Manual lever into the Auto Start/Stop position. The tonearm lifts automatically as the platter begins to spin, the stylus is placed over the lead-in groove of the record, and the tonearm descends to begin play. If you desire to interrupt play at any time, simply pull the lever again, or you may wait till the record ends. In either case, the arm is automatically lifted  and returned to its rest, and power is switched off, all without your assistance.

When manual play is desired, simply set the control lever to the Manual On position. When the platter begins to rotate, move the stylus to over the part of the record you want to hear. An oil-damped Cueing Lever is provided to help you avoid damaging your valuable records. As in Auto Play, the Manual position on the lever allows the automatic return mechanism to return the tonearm to its rest.

Additional convenience Auto Repeat control on the SR-535.

In the Off position if sets the turntable in auto-return mode. Or, you can select from "1" to "5" repeat plays, or "infinite" which allows the automatic mechanism to continuously repeat its simple job until you change the repeat control settings.

Accurate Drive System

Sansui engineers have done if again. The platter of the Sr-535 never shows any appreciable slow-down under reasonable loads. This means that your 33-⅓ and 45 rpm records are always played at the correct speeds for best musical performance. This accuracy is assured by an advanced, high-torque, 20-pole/30-slot brushless DC type servo motor for direct drive. Speed drift is effectively eliminated by the Sansui-exclusive rotor position sensor mechanism, coupled with the motor's bias-controlled saturable core (Sansui Pat. Pend). Thanks to the dependable power supply, the drive voltage is kept constant for accuracy under any conditions.

Mechanically, as well as electrically, the SR-535 has impressive precision. All components and parts are designed, machined and assembled under very careful super-vision to live up to Sansui's strict quality control standards. The bearing sleeve is mirror finished for complete roundness, for instance. The motor shaft/center spindle is formed of the finest polished carbon-chrome steel and rides in a thrust bearing of tough friction-resisting synthetic polyamide. We've used a special lubricant, one developed by the aerospace industry, to ensure low friction in the motor over long years of operation.

Smoother rotation is also ensured by the heavy (1,4 kg ) aluminum die-cast platter. This, plus Sansui's attention to every minor point in design and construction, gives the Sr-535 impressive specifications low 0,038% wo/flutter and better than 67 dB rumble.

Fine speed adjustment with strobe

On the edge of the oversized (31,8 cm or just over 12-inch) platter there are four rows of stroboscopic patterns, two each for both speeds to permit fine adjustment when your electrical power is either 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The strobe light illuminates the platter edge so that you can visually check its rotation speed for accuracy. Once the correct speed is reached, the speeds will continue to spin accurately, or you can use two fine speed controls to vary platter by as much as ±3,5% from the standard speeds. By the way, these controls are recessed to avoid accidental speed change.

Stabilized Tonearm

Exceptionally high tonearm stability is one of the reasons the Sansui Sr-535 performs with such high musicality. Despite the attractive price of this fully automatic turntable, the tonearm has the same stability and resistance to resonance found in much more expensive models. Spurious vertical travel and harmful torsion or twisting are avoided by a special support with two vertical pivots. The mass of the arm is concentrated at these points to clearly define the unit's fulcrum for better mechanical advantages, particularly in the bass frequencies which are delivered from your record free of "mud".

Low-resonance design

Resonance is further suppressed by the special acoustic absorbent, we use inside the highly rigid tonearm tubing. Then, we've decoupled the balance weight from the arm shaft vis a newly designed rubber damper. All types of vibration whether  transmitted through the air or through the physical structure, are shut out before reach the stylus.

Other tonearm features:

Zinc-alloy die-cast arm base; a massive heavy structure to improve bass response by firmly securing the arm to the cabinet.

Direct readout tracking force dial; precision-calibrated markings every 0,25grams one rotation covers 0-to-3 gram range

Gold-plated connection pins; free from all forms of rust to ensure maximum transfer of the tiny electrical signals from cartridge to your amplifier

Arm lifter lever; oil damped for smooth operation

Anti-skate knob; adjustable even as the record is played, another bonus in this attractively priced turntable.

Cabinet

Sansui designers take special pride in the clean, modernistic looks of the SR-535 turntable. The silver metallic finish sets off the precision lines of the cabinet and is just "flat" enough to resist glare from room lights without appearing too dull. The clean lines are more than good looking, advanced computer technology and time-tested carpentry techniques alike were used in designing the Sr-535 to resist acoustic feedback or "howling". The automatic mechanism is mounted on a separate chassis inside the cabinet for instance while the low-profile of the base and its complex suspension system further ensure good sound.

Complex-suspension

To defeat all types of vibration before they can harm your music, the SR-535 is suspended in a complex system of rubber and spring devices. Air-borne vibration, such as sound-waves from your speakers, and structure-borne vibrations, such as originating from your operation of amplifier or receiver controls, from footsteps, etc. Are effectively damped so that your music retains its tight bass, clean mids and crisp highs.
