What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Special arm-base mounting is used for easy replacement (one touch system) of tonearm of your choice. (No tonearm is supplied with this turntable)

Smart and ultra slim appearance yet resistant to howling and floor vibration

Turntable platter designed as to give not only necessary inertia but possible heaviest weight in consideration of motor bearing and resonance/tension of each part of the turntable

Insulator, compliance and control required for prevention of vibration is obtained by combination of spring, rubber and silicon grease.

Acrylite case, 4 mm thick dust cover.

Feather-touch On/Off micro switch

Generally speaking, manufacturers design a product and place great stress on cost performance and additional effort is paid as to where the compromise is made. In the case of audiophiles, importance is attached to what they seek or want to do rather than its cost.

This turntable Luxman now proudly announce is designed purely from the concept of audiophiles - slim and compact appearance, rugged construction resistant to howling and external vibration, arm base where one's favorite tone-arm could be fixed by a single touch and performance stability. Look at the internal construction and you will surely notice the above philosophy throughout.

Motor Suspension

The most unique feature of this turntable is the motor suspending structure. The robust chassis of aluminum die-casting integrates the tonearm base. For the upper panel, anodized aluminum of 3mm thick is used, which is, through rubber, fixed to the wood frame thus providing damping effect. Net weight is 13 kg (PD-121) and 11 kg (PD-131), which contributes effectively to prevent howling feedback or floor vibration.

Bayonet Mount Tonearm Base

A tonearm is not provided with the PD-121 (and PD-131). But the elaborate bayonet mount type tonearm base , similar in principle to that used in cameras, is adopted to ensure quick interchangeability of various famous tonearms with easy "one touch" operation

Unique Stroboscope

A unique idea is adopted for the stroboscope to ensure an easy and pleasant check of the turntable rotation. In order to make the stroboscope pattern very clear a black light tube is fired by very short duration pulses and a special "dayglo" paint has been used for the strobo markings. Further the line frequency indication can be identified by colour yellow for 50 Hz and yellow/green for 60 Hz.

Chassis, wooden frame and panel

Aluminum die-cast chassis with sufficient strength and weight, 3 mm thick anodized aluminium panel are firmly assembled together with rubber and elegant wooden frame with bumper effect which keeps this turntable immune from vibration

Insulator of Triple Structure

A special and unique insulator has been developed to ensure best possible anti-vibration. Each spring is damped by rubber, and the whole damper mechanism is suspended in silicon-grease. This is really and effective insulator and necessary compliance and damping effect are beautifully integrated.

Luxman PD-277 turntable

Fully Automatic Direct-Drive Turntable

Brushless, Slotless DC Servo Motor

The servo-controlled direct drive brushless DC motor with its gapless pole design is totally free from cogging or pulsing that plagues many other direct-drive turntables, ensuring superb Wow and Flutter characteristics. The high-inertia platter distributes its large mass evenly around the contour.

Straight Tonearm

The straight, statically-balanced tonearm has several important features. For exampling, the vertical pivots extend through the arm rather than simply suspending it from the outside. This minimizes lateral play, and assures that the stylus remains always perpendicular to the disc. Also, the arm's nested double-tube construction and internal damping deal most effectively with resonance.

The headshell is integrated to the tonearm. This system is much better than changing headshells, since it minimizes mass at the critical point of the tonearm, removing possible poor contact of the cartridge terminals.

Mirror Reflex Stroboscope

The unique stroboscope system of mirror-reflection type is featured, which makes it easy to adjust an accurate rotation speed.

Feather-Touch Operation

An electronic sensing system offers feather-touch operation of the auto-start and cut-off functions, giving no mechanical loads.

Platter Mat

The platter mat is so designed as to realize firm retention of the disc. To minimize unnecessary space between the disc and mat, the plane is procured between the two by making the platter contour match that of the disc.

This mat damps not only the disc but the platter itself thanks to its high-density rubber material, and it is exactly inlaid to the platter. Its specially treated surface ensures superb contact to the disc.

Dust Cover

An acrylic resin is used for the dust cover, which provides very smooth surface and excelent result against acoustic feedback. Simi-free-stop hinges make the entire dust detachable.

Other features

The power-on/off and speed selector, manual-auto-repeat selector, and auto-start and cut-off buttons are most logically placed in consideration of human engineering. Also, all the necessary functions are provided such as oil-damped cueing system, inside-force cancellor, etc.

JVC L-A31 turntable

Auto-Return Direct -Drive Turntable

Features

Cog-free coreless DC servo motor

FG direct-drive system

Low-mass straight tonearm

Up-front controls

Auto return convenience and pitch control

Sharing many features with JVC's more advanced turntables is the L-A31. like every other JVC turntable, it has the JVC-exclusive cog-free coreless DC servo motor to smooth rotation and deliver high torque, and our FG direct-drive system to maintain speed accuracy. Rotational speed is constantly adjusted against any variations, whatever the cause. Our low-mass straight tonearm is consistent with current thoughts on the subject; low-mass improves tracking, allowing the use of even quality high-compliance cartridges. Its straight design further reduces mass and increases rigidity. Resonance is optimally just above warp frequencies while remaining below audible frequencies and our ultra-light non-resonating headshell is included. Operation is simple, convenient and smooth. Controls are up-front, outside the closed dust cover - even arm cueing. Cueing and end-of-play auto return are two amenities added to protect records and stylus. Record handling is reduced to a minimum. Other features are the built-in strobe and a pitch control for "tuning" your records. We're sure that feature for feature and spec for spec, there isn't a finer turntable available.

JVC L-A21 turntable

Auto-Return Belt-Drive Turntable

Features:

Quiet and accurate belt-drive

Precision synchronous motor

Low-mass straight tonearm

Up-front controls

Auto return convenience

The design objectives for our lowest cost turntable were for the most performance and features at a price easily accessible to anyone. Check the features and specifications of the L-A21 and you'll agree that we met all our design objectives. Our reliable belt-drive system eliminates vibration and noise and promotes smooth platter rotation. And our motor is an advanced synchronous type - impervious to changes in line voltage. Our tonearm, like those found on our more expensive models, is of a low-mass design for high tracking and low distortion while its straight tube design reduces spurious movement of the arm due to dynamic torsion. Our special headshell is non-resonant yet extremely rigid. We've also included a cueing device and the auto return mechanism. Like all its operating controls, the cue button is outside the closed dust cover so there's little chance of nudging the tonearm and damaging record or stylus . All in all, a great bargain at any price.

IMF TLS80 II loudspeakers

Based upon the world acclaimed Reference Standard Professional Loudspeakers, the Monitor TLS80 fulfills the need of the dedicated audiophile for a speaker of comparable quality, but tailored for home use.

Full transmission line loading incorporates new damping materials. Acoustic foam, as used in anechoic chambers, is "sculptured" to produce a wedge effect where the maximum surface area is exposed to damp the line, yet presenting the minimum of restriction. A separate midrange line is similarly terminated whilst standing waves are progressively absorbed by long hair wool. Both a tweeter and a super-tweeter are employed to ensure power handling conducive with wide dispersion and extended response beyond the limits of human hearing. Only a transmission line can provide the dynamic impact experienced in the concert hall. Bass is reproduced within the listening room rather than in a box. If there were a better method of loading, we would have employed it.

The whole system is integrated by a complex crossover, developed as the result of research in depth into the problems of phase correction, impulse response and amplifier matching. A three position "Tilt" control enables the energy response to be modified from nominally flat to "Rise" or "Fall", compensating for the location, the characteristics of ancillary equipment, or even personal preference.

Like the Reference Standard, the speakers are designed to be used on the stands provided. These ensure that the loudspeakers are supported off the floor, reducing room colouration components. Importantly they slightly tilt the speakers back, maintaining a substantially flat response both axially and hemispherically.

There is very little that need be said about the Monitor, which is both neutral yet exciting. Supplied in matched "mirror image" pairs the stereo presentation is stable, portraying great detail with the uncanny ability to reproduce the acoustic environment of the original performance. We suggest that you audition these speakers with the finest ancillary equipment. In the tradition of our monitoring approach to loudspeaker design the TLS 80 is capable of providing greater satisfaction over a wider range of programme material.

Castle Isis loudspeakers

In this digital, computer age loudspeakers are often seen as poor relations of the electronics in a hi-fi or home cinema system. As electro-acoustic devices they are often, incorrectly thought of, as "old" technology - one design indistinguishable from another. You couldn't be more wrong.

The Castle Isis sets new performance standards for a speaker of its compact dimensions thanks to the use of castle designed and developed advanced technology drive units. Smooth high frequency detail is delivered by our 25 mm polyamide dome tweeter. Its shallow horn loading ensures good treble dispersion on and off-axis for a wide listening area.

The 130 mm mid/bass driver is built into a strudy die-cast chassis with a lightweight injection moulded plastic cone. A high temperature Kapton voice coil former is used to allow the driver to produce high levels of clean, undistorted sound. A simple crossover, employing audiophile quality components, integrates these exceptional drivers without sacrificing transparency or "slam"

The Castle Isis cabinet is pleasingly proportionated with a front-facing reflex port that suits it equally to bookshelf or stand use.

Akai 1730D-SS reel-to-reel

4-channel / 2-channel Stereo Tape Deck

An entirely new world of sound has been created by Akai's electronics engineers who have developed a new and sophisticated line of 4-channel surround stereo equipment. Included in this line are the exciting 1730D-SS 4-channel/2-channel Stereo Tape Deck and 1730-SS 4-Channel/2-Channel Stereo Tape recorder.

With either system, you're completely surrounded in sound with four speakers, left and right in front, and left and right in the rear. This system gives you a real "sense of presence", the feeling of being exactly in the middle of a live performance. Both models are designed to be used for not only 4-channel stereo but also 2-channel stereo as well.

The 1730D-SS is perfectly matched with Akai's exclusive AA-6100 amplifier. this amplifier has 80 W music power for dynamic 4-channel stereo sound and accommodates both 4-channel and 2-channel stereo operation.

Akai's dependable 2-lever system complements the high grade parts and robust construction of this rugged 4-channel/2-channel stereo model

It is regular practice to employ mechanical control in one-motor tape decks.  Akai has long since employed this 2-lever system in our one-motor decks. When compared to an ordinary 1-lever system, because the Play/Rec and F.Fwd/Rew Levers are independent, the movable range of the levers are shorter, and operation is lighter. Also, because the F. Fwd/Rew Lever is separate, mis-operation is minimized. Further, because of the mechanical structure of this control system, other parts are not unfavourably influenced and mechanism endurance is extended. Rectangular shaped Control Panel with proportionately balanced controls.
