What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Akai CR-80 SS cartridge tape recorder

8-Track, 4/2-Channel Cartridge Recording /Playback

Model CR-80 SS is equipped with a built-in 4-channel power amplifier and 4 Speaker Jacks for Instant 4-channel or 2-channel operation. This compact unit makes 4-channel stereo recording a "cinch" even where space is a factor. The same Akai robust mechanism for top rate performance and endurance. One Micron Gap Rec/Playback Head for amazing frequency response to 16,000 Hz

1-Micron Gap Head

Just what is a one-micron gap head? It's a head with a width of only one astounding micron. Until now two or four micron gap heads have been the standards for comparing tape recorders. However, Akai has pushed ahead and narrowed the head gap; thus narrowing the difference between tape recording results and actual sound.

The Akai perfected one-micron gap head has these distinctive advantages over heads with wider gaps:

A - Excellent Frequency Response even at low tape speed

B - Clear, high pitched sound can be regenerated as a frequency tone and recorded smoothly with a minimum of distortion.

Motor

The motor of model CR-80 SS is a condenser starting two-speed induction motor. The winding characteristics of this 2-8 pole motor provides tape-speed stability and minimizes distortion

Cross-Field Head

On conventional recorders the signal and biass are applied to the same recording head. Therefore the frequencies recorded, especially the high frequency component of the recorded signal tend to be attenuated or erased by the effect of this bias field. On the exclusive Akai Cross-Filed head which was developed by Akai for practical use the signal and bias heads are mounted in opposition with their centres slightly off. As the recorded signal is entirely unaffacted by the prevailing effect of the bias fielf, the tape can be recorded over the entire frequency spectrum with maximum fidelity.

One Micron Gap head

Model X-1800SD utilizes the cross-field head to obtain an amazing level of recording characteristics in reel-to-reel recording. In cartridge recording, the high-quality one micron gap head designed by Akai also gives excellent recording characteristics. This recording characteristic, 50 to 17,000 Hz ±3 dB at a tape speed of 3-3/4 ips, produces excellent results for cartridge tape recordings.

8-track stereo recording/playback (cartridge)

Model X-1800SD employs the 8 track stereo system on the cartridge. The tape has a total of eight tracks, two of which are used at a time for stereo recording or playback. These are four choices of channels for stereo recording and playback. When the tape ends, the next channel is automatically positioned for recording or playback. Recording or playback time for one channel is fifteen minutes, and continous one hour on four channels by using 300 foot cartridge tape. The desired channel may be easily selected by manually pushing the Cartridge program Selector Button.

Cartridge recording tape (ACT-200, ACT-300)

Akai's 1800 series tape recorders, Model 1800L and X-1800SD are the latest models that are capable of recording with a cartridge tape. For use in this type of recording, we have cartridge recording tapes, ACT-200 with 200 foot long tape, and ACT-300 with 300 foot long tape. This cartridge tapes are highly recommended for best results.

Sound on sound; echo; tape monitoring are provided. The counter has 4 digits, and the unique new TB 1022 low noise, high output tape eliminates the need for 10,5" reels. The TG 1000 holds 3300 ft of tape om its 8-3/4" reels. The tape drive with the electronic tension control is so gentle and foolproof that even triple play tape may be used. The built in cable driver and the wide dynamic range input circuitry permit flexibility at the interfaces to amplifiers and microphones. The level meters are peak reading for fast response. The robust construction is very compact and fully modular. All circuitry is silicon solid state.

Akai GX-635D reel-to-reel

Making It An Even Better System: A new GX head
A system that uses a head for each function as that of the GX-635D does would not be nearly as advantageous if the head were not of superb quality as well. With Akai's improved GX head, there's no worry on this point.
Made from low-noise crystal ferrite and superb-hard glass, the GX head is incredibly durable. And its new design has totally eliminated the contour effect, thus flattening frequency response at low ranges for much clearer bass sounds. The system as a whole maintains the ideal head gap for each function, improving head sensitivity and eliminating sound drop-out. What all these things add up to are  a better dynamic range and longer, trouble-free service life than possible with other heads. Not only do you get better performance, you receive economic savings as well.

Even the Transport System's new
A lot of study has gone into making this deck worthy of its top-line rank. Accordingly, one of the parts that has been radically changed is the tape transport system.
As you can see, its shape is different from that of other systems. That's because it has been made to conform to the optimum travel path of the tape. Thus the heads touch the tape at just the right spot, assuring the best recording and playback results. This improvement has been accomplished by the addition of two guide rollers, one on each side. And these rollers have been coated with rubber so that vibrations that would normally reach the head block are absorbed. The rubber also pre vents tape slip during transport. Which brings us to another plus of this system stable and steady tape travel. The parts that assure this-new, improved motor, GX heads and tension arms - are introduced hereafter.
One-way, Oil-damped tension Arms
The QX-635D employs one-way, oil-damped tension arms that assure normal transport speed is reached immediately after start. By the use of springs, they allow no tag that could damage your otherwise professional-style recordings. And, they feature a lock mechanism that makes it all the easier for you to thread the tape.

Three-motor, Direct Capstan Drive System
The best thing about this system is what you don't get rubber belts, idlers and other such parts that, in conventional systems, tended to produce vibration and wear. This, along with the fact that a separate motor is  used for each reel as well as for the capstan, ensures that the tape is transported smoothly at a fixed speed during both recording and playback. Longer service with a lower wow and flutter characteristic 9an incredible 0,03% WRMS) is the result.

The new C.P.G. AC Servo Capstan Motor
The capstan performsone of the most important functions in a tape deck, transpotrion of the tape. To guarantee this function is performed perfectly smoothly and steadlly. Akai has developed a new motor for the capstan drive. In the servo circuit of this motor, a Sample-and Hold circuit, is employed. The effect of this is to improve the response characteristics of the servo so that regular speed is always maintained and vibrations emanating from the motor are reduced.

Infra-red remote Control System
Unlike conventional remote control systems, the RC-70 poses no problems of distance or bothersome cords. Because it uses infra-red rays, it allows you to control the deck from across the room and is thus great for dubbing and air checking.
Dust Cover
To protect your tape and heads from harmful dust, this smoked dust cover accessory is available. Even with it attached total operation of the deck is possible.
