What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Castle Kendal loudspeakers

The Kendal is Castle Acoustic latest loudspeakers. The most compact floor-standing design in the range, the Kendal, is at an advantage in smaller rooms. Because of its size a sealed box enclosure offers more appropriate loading for the mid/bass driver and permits the speaker to be used close to a wall.

The Kendal features a 130 mm coned version of the fabulous 170 mm woven carbon fibre drive unit developed for the Castle Avon. This drive unit - built into a precision die-cast chassis with a high temperature voice coil former and oversize magnet assembly - produces a highly detailed midrange with superbly controlled transient attack.

The Castle Acoustic 25 mm polyamide composite dome tweeter is an ideal match for this "fast" mid/bass driver.

Castle Keep speaker

The Castle Keep answers the demand for a high quality, centre channel speaker designed for the modern, multi-channel home cinema system. Centre channel speakers are commonly designed down to a price. This can mean poor cosmetic design and often wore acoustic performance. The Keep is a notable exception.

Employing the same quality 130 mm cast chassis bass drivers developed for the award-winning Castle Harlech, the Keep is finished in the true Castle tradition with quality wood veneers. Treble - vital to the transparency and dynamics demanded of a centre channel speaker handling dialogue - is handled by the castle 25 mm short horn loaded polyamide tweeter. Bass reflex loading guarantees sensitivity equal to the dynamics of modern digital soundtrack while the use of the Castle tweeter gives a wide and even treble dispersion.

Bass drivers are fully shielded to avoid interference with TV monitors.

The Keep is, of course, AC-3 (Dolby Digital) compatible. With the Castle keep, home cinema need not be a sound quality compromise.

Pioneer TX-5500II tuner

Truly High Fidelity Performance in Amand FM Stereo in An Advanced IC-Equipped Tuner in Attractive Price Range

Pioneer stays ahead in rich musical performance and interference-free reception when it comes to AM/FM stereo tuners in every price category. The TX-5500II is no exception, despite its attractively low price. The latest Pioneer advances in circuitry as perfected by our research and development teams are employed, often in microcircuit IC forms, to increase sensitivity and selectivity, reduce the Signal-to-Noise and Distortion irregularities, and improve overall tonal quality. An example is the PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) IC used in the FM stereo multiplex demodulator section. Another is the FET and 3-gang variable capacitor construction of the FM front end for more sensitivity. Still another is the use of the ceramic filter-plus-IC from of the FM IF section to provide pinpoint selectivity. All this pays off in better tonal quality, less distortion and more precise station selection in a functional, versatile tuner at a popular price. It's the TX-5500II from Pioneer, a good way to stay ahead in hi-fi.

FM Front End is stable but highly sensitive

You won't find better performance for the price. Pioneer boosts FM sensitivity to 10,7 dBf (1,9 µV) IHF. In the TX-5500II by using a low-noise FET and a 3-gang variable capacitor in the stable FM front end. Interference is rejected and the Signal-to-Noise Ratio is improved

Exclusive IF circuit uses ceramic filters and IC

Stability and limiter characteristics are improved while at the same time selectivity and capture ratio are boosted. This results from Pioneer's use of an exclusive high-performance IC and only those ceramic filters which can deliver the best phase linearity in the IF circuit.

Stereo separation is more stable with PLL

Outside influences such as changes in temperature and moisture can never affect the stereo FM multiplex demodulator because we use a Phase-Locked-Loop (PLL) circuit in IC form. The circuit has distinguished Automatic Gain Control (AGC) characteristics and stable detector output, factors which pay off in better stereo FM performance in strong signal areas.

Super-simple tuning system for more accuracy

The clean looks of the Pioneer TX-500II are functional, too. The FM-linear dial scale, a smooth-turning, flywheel balanced tuning mechanism and a combination signal-strength (FM/AM) and center-of-channel (FM only) meter make precision tuning simple.

A valuable investment in versatility

FM muting is automatically provided when you switch to FM Auto. The FM Mono positions lets you select more distant stations. And in the AM position, a high-integration AM circuit goes on line to bring you low-noise AM performance.

Sony TA-AX44 amplifier

Remote Control Amplifier

Sony products are inspired predictions of the future of technology. We are renowned throughout the world as the major innovator in home electronics. With our TA-AX44 amplifier, we're proud to introduce the audio technology of tomorrow.

These two products (TA-AX44 and ST-JX44) are the electronics of revolutionary audio system for the 80's, and beyond. Forget all your preconceived notion. If you're looking for an integrated amplifier, you should re-consider. If you're already picked out an amplifier and tuner, think again. Even if you're planning to buy a receiver, don't make any purchase yet - our new amplifier and tuner together fall roughly into the same price range as many equivalently-powered receivers. No matter what you had in mind, you owe it to yourself to examine the Sony TA-AX44  first.

First you'll notice the modern, futuristic appearance. The AX44 really doesn't resemble an amp at all, in the traditional sense; there are no knobs, no toggle switches, no power meter. In fact, neither product has knobs of any kind, and both are streamlined and compact. High Fidelity magazine, calling Sony's amp approach "both lean and radical", believes that our new amplifier design indicates "which way you should look if you want a glimpse of the future". This is true of the performance as well as the striking design of both of these products.

Sansui SP-X9700 speakers

High-Resolution 4-Way, 7-Speaker System

Really Rich Bass - the 17-inch woofer has non resonant frame and a cone that could move mountains

If you could ut enough power into the Sansui SP-X9700  you probably could move mountains, or at least create a couple of man-sized quakes. As it is, the very high power capacity of the system is more than enough to handle most of today's mammoth power amps and receivers - 280 watts.

Woofer design and construction in such a large system naturally need to be fully up to state-of-the-art. Standards , if you want to avoid spurious vibration, excessive heat and the various kinds of distortion they lead to. Sansui forms the cone of a special pulp formulation, gives it a carefully calculated curvature, adds corrugations to break up damaging surface waves, and thus preserves all the dynamic punch of your music's "bottom end" with ease.

The bobbin in the woofer voice coil is of luminum for quick heat dissipation the coil itself is coated with a heat-resistant film. Together they provide high linearity up to a tested level of 200 degrees Celsius

For the magnetic circuit we've set a high flux density of 11,300 gauss and thus achieved mor-than-adequate drive and damping. Of special note is the concave recess at the top of the center pole, helping to keep the top plate magnetically saturated for the reduction of harmful 3rd harmonic distortion. Musicality is richer at all input levels.

Finely, frame dynamic were analysed in several prototype models until we eliminated destructive resonance. The entire woofer assembly is structurally sound - and no amount of high-amplitude input up to the rated capacity can cause "woofer buzz".

Close-up Midrange: Special Sansui techniques preserve the intimacy of vocals, fidelity of fundamentals.

High efficiency is just one of the design criteria met and surpassed by the 8-inch midrange speaker unit in the Sansui SP-X9700. to preserve the natural "close-up" feeling of vocals, and to retain a high degree of fidelity with the fundamentals of musical instruments, we chose a cone pulp mixture of highly elastic, thermally stable fibres.

The new method of pressing the cone has ensured a high Signal-to-Noise Ratio and a flat Frequency Response over the Frequency Range assigned to this unit. Sound transparency and crisp, intimate "presence" are the benefits,

For increased power handling, the same techniques used in the voice coil and magnetic circuit of the woofer are again employed here harmonic distortion is discouraged even when the maximum input of 280 watts is introduced over long period of time.

Cracklin Clean Highs: Well-defined high-frequency reproduction is sent into every corner of your room.

Dual horn tweeters cover the frequency range between where the midrange leaves off and the supertweeters take over. This is the high range where musical definition is determined for cymbals, reeds, strings and the upper harmonics of most other instruments, electric and electronic instruments included.

The two horn tweeter are identical, and are connected in parallel to increase efficiency and power handling capacity. Each has a powerful magnetic circuit and a phenol-resin diaphragm, a precision-machined zinc die-cast acoustic equalizer is positioned as closely as technically possible to the diaphragm to maintain phase integrity and extend the high-frequency limit. The drivers are then coupled to non-resonant zinc die-cast horns formed with sectoral fins to improve dispersion and transient response.

Triple Superteeters: What you can't hear Can hurt.

The three precision supertweeters in the Sansui SP-X9700 cover the extreme high-frequency range clear into the supersonics up to 23,000 Hz with accuracy and fidelity. You may argue that you can't hear the super-highs, but our tests have shown that when they are reproduced with integrity, the frequencies you Can hear come out cleaner, crisper and more musical.

Again special pulp is used in the cone diaphragms, which are then installed with mylar center caps for phase linearity. The two of supertweeters is mounted on a unique tri-sided projection on the front baffle so that the super-highs are bearned into every corner of your listening room.

Level Control: Special low-distortion network improves musicality.

Three positions are provided on the front-panel Level Control: Natural;  Soft-1, and Soft-2. its esy to match the speaker system's response to yur acoustic environment, using the Soft positions when you feel that highs are too "brilliant". The control works from a newly-designed crossover network featuring low electrical loss, high power handling and low distortion.

Real-Wood Grille: Sansui's traditional Kumiko design adds distinction

High-density "acoustic" particleboard forms the massive bass reflex enclosure of the SP-X9700 for resonance free reproduction. Standing waves are damped by two types of sound absorbent inside. The exterior cabinet is finished with simulated walunt grain and the removable real-wood grille, with a beautiful hand-carved traditional "Kumiko" pattern grille.
