What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Akai GX-280D-SS tape deck

4-Head 3-Motor Automatic Reverse Surround Stereo Tape Deck

Akai's GX Head 4-Channel Surround Stereo system eliminates the inability to pick up and reproduce true concert hall sound. Every pitch of sound and reverberation effect is reproduced with all of the exciting "sense of presence" experienced when attending a live concert. Akai's surround stereo supplements conventional stereo's two front speakers with two additional rear speakers to front the "2-2 system". The listener is surrounded by two sets of speakers (left & right front and left & right rear). This arrangement does not mean, however, that simply adding two speakers to a 2-channel stereo system is all that is necessary for 4-channel stereo playback. Four separate recordings are made using four individual channels (four tracks in one direction) of the magnetic recording tape. This 4-channel stereo tape feeds into four pre and main amplifiers to activate a 4-speaker system. Thus, at playback time, sounds from separate channels are emitted from each speaker providing the listener with a feeling that he is listening to concert hall sound from the best seat in the auditorium. Model GX-280D-SS is a compatible 4-channel/2-channel stereo model. For 2-channel stereo operation, only the front channels are utilized. For exciting 4-channel surround stereo, a 4-channel stereo external amplifier or two 2-channel stereo amplifiers can be used to activate a 4-speaker system.

GX (Glass & Crystal Ferrite) Head

Akai has equipped this model with its new and amazing Glass & Crystal Ferrite Recording and Playback heads to bring you unequalled open reel high fidelity sound. With the Glass & Crystal Ferrite head, superbly wider frequencies with clear highs can be recorded in all their true fidelity with low noise tape. In other words, with the GX head, a high dynamic range and excellent Signal-to-Noise Ratio are achieved. The secret of this quality head is made of single crystal ferrite and is mounted and set in glass. The superior high range characteristics are contributable to thw structure of the head gap which focused the magnetic field into a sharp oblong radius. This focused field recording system minimizes high frequency loss, eliminating undue equalization and achieving a wider dynamic range.

Sansui SS-10 headphones

High-Fidelity Stereo Headphone Set

The virtues of being alone have long been underrated. Or ware until Sansui decided to do something really meaningful about it. Now enter the SS-10 stereo headphone set, affectionately dedicated to those purists to whom stereo is indeed a very personal experience, ideally savored in princely solitude, far from the maddening crowd. Equipped with newly developed mechanical two-way speakers, this truly high-fidelity set reproduces a wide range of frequencies from very, very low to ultra-high with uniform smoothness. Few other stereo headphones on the market today are so discreet and so solicitous of your undisturbed listening pleasure. The SS-10 "direct line" set offers a host of attractive features, including separate volume controls for each channel, identical left and right channel characteristics, and hand-sewn so comfortable that it's a very wise investment from that standpoint alone. But Sansui is also very understanding about the pleasures of stereo sharing, and providently thought to make the "direct line" convertible to a "party line". So that on those occasions when there's something special you'd like someone special to hear with you, the SS-10 has a two-meter long Y-shaped extension cord equipped with two jacks for connecting two sets of headphones. But whether used in solitude, or adapted for sharing, the SS-10 stands alone as today's best buy in stereo headphones.

Mechanical 2-Way Speakers

The unique, newly developed mechanical 2-way speakers of the SS-10 utilize large 8 cm, special cone papers for the low and middle range notes, and quality polyester diaphragms that also cover the high ranges. These enable the SS-10 to reproduce sound with an absolute minimum of intermodulation and harmonic distortion and a maximum of transparency and resolution.

Wide Frequency Range

Thanks to the mechanical 2-way speakers, the SS-10 reproduces a wide 20 to 20,000 Hz range of sound, from well-damped, powerful rich heavy bass comparable to that reproduces by large speakers, to delicate, transparent treble, all with exceptional smoothness.

Identical Channel Characteristics

The SS-10 is designed to minimize the difference in tonal quality and output sound pressure level between the left and right channels, enabling you to enjoy well-balanced stereo sound. Further, unlike speaker systems, a stereo headphone set completely separates the left and right channel sounds, so that the stereo separation is exceptional.

Separate Volume Controls

Equipped with a volume control on each ear pad, the SS-10 saves you the trouble of standing up and walking over to the amplifier each time you wish to adjust the sound volume. It;s especially convenient when you are sitting far away from the amplifier using the extension cord supplied.

Since the left and right channels can be separately adjusted , adjustment of stereo balance is also easily accomplished.

y-Shaped Extension Cord with Two Jacks

The SS-10 comes complete with a 2 meter long extension cord to let you relax away from the amplifier or tape deck. This cord is provided with two jacks for connecting two stereo headphones sets, so two persons can listen together.

Spiral Cord

The connection cord of the SS-10 is of the same curled spiral type as that used with telephones. Though as long as 3 meters, it never gets in your way.

Hand-Sewn Ear Pads

Made of specially-treated soft plastic, the SS-10's ear pads cover the ears very softly and do not exert uncomfortable pressure on the wearer. These comfortable pads seal out external sound and will not tire the wearer even after hours of continuous listening

Easy-to Use, Functional Design

The length of the head band can be freely adjusted to suit the size of the head or ear positions of each individual.

Sansui SS-100 headphones

Omni-Dynamic Stereo Headphones

Sansui gives stereo music listeners the rich bass of dynamic acoustic transducers as well as the wide frequency range and brilliant musical reproduction qualities of the electrostatic types in these all-new, smartly designed SS-100 stereo headphones.

"Omni" means that the diaphragms inside the comfortably fitting earpieces each distribute a uniform driving force over its entire flat surface, avoiding split vibrations. The low mass of each diaphragm also means less total harmonic distortion and less phase distortion - the same advantages you have with electrostatic drivers. But since the SS-100 design is essentially dynamic , no electrostatic adaptor or special amplifier is required, and you enjoy a natural yet powerful bass reproduction as well.

With the Sansui Omni-Dynamic SS-100, frequency response is flat over the entire musical spectrum from superlows to ultrahighs. Harmonic distortion is minimal, impedance is flat with no trace of peaks or dips, and your amplifier or receiver is shown off at its best without overstraining.

Omni-Dynamic Principle

These handsome, Sansui-exclusive headphones employ an omni-dynamic transducer (diaphragm) in each earpiece. The units are made of polyester film, stretched to a uniform tautness and contained between two anisotropic magnet plates (Fig.1.) On the diaphragm film is etched a voice coil pattern (Fig. 2) And each of the magnet plates has a field (Fig. 3) which, when activated by the plus and minus pulsations of the musical input signal, moves the diaphragm to end from based on Fleming's left-hand rule as applies to current flow in coils.

Driver Construction

Omni-Dynamic Driver

As they are very thin and low in mass, the diaphragms offer excellent transient characteristics over a wider frequency range than can those shaped as cones or domes. This means you have a flat response from the superlows to ultrahighs with any musical input signal. Omni-dynamic drive means, too, that all sections of the diaphragm surfaces move in linear piston motion, without split vibrations, thus reducing harmonic distortion and extending dynamic range.

Powerful Magnets

The anisotropic magnet plates in the SS-100 each have high magnetic density to afford the headphones the very high sensitivity (efficiency) of 94 dB/mW.

Optimum Amplifier Load

Since the impedance of these headphones is literally constant at all frequencies, your amplifier or receiver is asked only to deliver an optimum load, meaning that you are assured of the best sound quality from your unit

No-Adaptor Design

To drive the SS-100 simply plug in the provided jack at the headphone outlet on your amplifier or receiver. No AC power booster or other adaptor is required.

Fatigue-Free Design

Comfortable Wearing

Eight neoprene supports separate the earpiece from the headband assembly, increasing wearing comfort. The earpads are soft and slim-silhouetted for further comfort, and the recess inside each is shaped to optimize air compliance for better musical reproduction, even into the very high frequency range.

Clear Channel Identification

You'll never confuse front and back or left and right two clearly-marked arrows point to the front of the headset, and only the left earpiece has a cable cord, both for channel identification and wearing comfort.

Slim Design Throughout

Since these Sansui-exclusive Omni-Dynamic drivers themselves are flat, thin and compact, the earpieces have been designed to present a slim silhouette. other design elements take up this low profile motif to result in a modern and quite comfortable stereo headphone set you'll enjoy for long years of hard use.

JVC DD-9 cassette deck

Direct-Drive Cassette Deck. The Performance Approaching Open-Reel Quality

The JVC DD-9 is truly a deck worthy to be termed "professional", if there ever was one. Thanks to our own JVC-manufactured quartz-lock Pulse Servo motor, we've succeeded in practically eliminating wow/flutter; it's only 0,055% (DIN 45 500), the lowest figure ever achieved in a consumer cassette deck. This and other features help you get the highest level of performance - open-reel quality recording performance - from the compact cassette format.

Direct-Drive plus quartz-lock Pulse Servo motor equals (0,055% wow/flutter)

By linking our capstan directly to the motor shaft, we've eliminated all the linkages - belts, cams, pulleys, etc. - found in lesser decks that can create unwanted speed variations known as Wow and Flutter. The low-rpm motor, designed and manufactured by JVC, is used for capstan drive, it has completely eliminated tiny rotational fits and starts known as "cogging" that can audibly tarnish musical reproduction. A quartz-referred servo circuit has been added so that absolute speed accuracy is impeccable.

Computerized B.E.S.T. tuning system - the matchmaker

You can obtain flat response from 40 to 12,500 Hz with a tolerance of only ±1 dB, using just about any tape, all at the touch of a button. The built-in computer matches deck parameters - bias, equalization, and sensitivity - for each specific tape. Distortion and dynamic range are both optimized.

Three-head design specially configured for B.E.S.T.

As you tune the deck to the tape, you can actually attest to the system's effectiveness, for the DD-9 has separate record and play heads (JVC X-cut SA combination Rec/Play heads), allowing you to monitor the tape while you're recording. You can also witness the unusually extended highs, for each head is given an optimized gap.

Dolby C-type noise reduction: Inaudible hiss and distortion free "hot" passages

The newest circuitry from Dolby Laboratories is incorporated in the DD-9 - Dolby C-type noise reduction. At high frequencies, noise (hiss) is reduced by an additional 10 dB (to a full 20 dB of noise reduction)

Two-colour digital fluorescent level meters with peak-hold function.

They are electronically accurate and have a peak-hold function so that instantaneous transients may be analysed for proper level setting during recording.

Quad 405-2 power amplifier

More than 60,000 Quad 405 current dumping amplifiers are in use around the world providing the "closest approach to the original sound" in the homes of serious music listeners, in recording and broadcasting studios and for sound reinforcement where quality is of prime importance.

The Quad 405-2 exploits improvements in component technology to provide more VA into a wider variety of loads than the original Quad 405 without compromising performance and reliability.

The Quad 405-2 will produce perceptibly higher sound pressure levels from the majority of loudspeakers than the original Quad 405, which will be of significant benefit with the increased dynamic range of modern programme sources.

The 405-2 uses "current dumping", a Quad invention based on feedforward error correction which eliminates many of the problems traditionally associated with transistor amplifiers.

"feedforward error correction" was first proposed by Harold Black in 1928, in which a derived error signal is added to the output signal of an amplifier in exactly the right amount to cancel the distortion produced by the amplifier. While it is relatively easy to add error current to signal current without interaction, as in Black's invention, it is very much more difficult to do so in voltage terms. Loudspeakers require a stiff source and so "feedforward" has found no successful application in audio amplifiers.

What Quad has done - not quite as easy as it sounds - is to produce a current controlled amplifier, apply a special type of feedforward current error correction and then apply overall voltage feedback to convert the whole to a voltage amplifier. There is in effect, both a low powered very high quality amplifier and a high powered heavy duty amplifier, the current dumpers. The low power amplifier controls the loudspeakers at all times, calling upon the high power section to provide most of the muscle. The small amplifier which carries the error signal is so arranged that provided the large power transistors get within the target area of the required output current, it will fill in the remainder accurately and completely.

The quality is solely dependent upon the performance of the low powered high quality amplifier together with four passive components. When correctly designed, all distortion in the output stage is reduced to zero.

With this technique it is possible to produce an amplifier of very high performance without using carefully matched relatively fragile output devices. There are no crossover biasing problems, no alignment or adjustment is required to obtain optimum performance and nothing can go out of alignment during life. In the event of component failure, replacement can be effected and performance restored without realignment.

Specifications

Power Output:  the amplifier is intended for use with loudspeakers of 4 - 16  nominal impedance.

Power and distortion for various frequencies

Continuous sine wave into 8 , resistive load

100 Hz any level up to 100 watts : less than0,01% Dtot

1,100 Hz any level up to 100 watts : less than0,01% Dtot

10,100 Hz any level up to 100 watts : less than0,05% Dtot

Output Internal Impedance and Offset:  3,3 µH is series with 0,03 . Offset 7 mV max

Frequency Response:

Ref. 1 kHz

Low frequency -1 dB at 20 Hz. Filter attenuation as curve.

High frequency -0,5 dB 20 kHz -3 dB 50 kHz

Signal Input Level:  0,5 V rms ±0,5 dB for 100 watts into 8 . Amplifier loads th input by 20 k  in parallel with 220 pF

Signal Input Slew rate Limit:  0,1V/µS.

Provided the rate of change of input voltages does not exceed this figure which is about ten times the maximum slew rate on a gramophone record and the amplifier is not driven into clipping, then the total of all distortions appearing in the audio range (20 - 20,000 Hz) due to transient or repetitive waveforms with frequency components inside or outside the audio range will be at least 80 dB below full rated power. If the major portion of the input energy is wanted signal then -80 dB (0,01%) represents the maximum possible distortion on programme.

Signal Input Overload:  Instantaneous recovery up to =20 dB overload

Crosstalk (Input loaded by 1 k ):

80 dB at 100 Hz

70 dB at 1 kHz

60 dB at 10 kHz

Protection

The Quad 405-2 is suitable for use under the most arduous music conditions and is electrically protected by current limiters; 8,5 ampers peak current into any load reducing to 3,1 amperes steady state into a short circuit. Shorting both outputs simultaneously for an extended period will result in overheating and eventual breakdown
