What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Pioneer CT-7R cassette deck

Auto-Reverse Playback/Recording Cassette Deck

The CT-7R records and plays back both sides of a tape, automatically. Now you can record up to 90 minutes of music (with C-90 cassette) without interruption and play it back over and over as long as you like. This may be a rare feature but what's even rarer is that the CT-7R is direct-drive.

As in the more expensive models, the transport in the CT-7R uses three-direct-drive-motor, each a Pioneer brushless Hall type. This contributes to the low wow and flutter of this deck, 0,04% (WRMS) or less.

The recording/playback head is constructed of Pioneer-developed Ribbon Sendust that is three to four times thinner than those used in conventional sendust heads. This explains the extended high frequency response of this deck - to 20,000 Hz. Transient response is superior and bass response is solid. The :Small-Window" Erase Head assures total erasure of previous recordings.

And like the more expensive models, the CT-7R is endowed with a full complement of Computer-Aided Conveniences. It's easy to find the end of recorded program material on a tape, cue in on any desired selection, return to the very beginning of the start of the next selection, hear the same selection over and over again, and skip the blank, programless section at the end of the tape and start play right at the beginning of the first selection of the flip side - without even touching the operating controls.

A 4-bit microcompuer, programmed to order, controls every operation for sure and quick tape transport motion. The three-direct-drive-motor tape transport means operational ease such as fast direct change of modes and flying-start recording.

In addition to standard Dolby-B noise reduction, the CT-7R has Dolby Labs newest circuit, Dolby-C. the Dolby-C provides an additional 10 dB of noise reduction (at 5 kHz) over standard Dolby-B's. that's a total of 20 dB of noise reduction. It also has increased MOL (Maximum Output Level) to assure an extended high end.

The Auto Tape Selector detects coded recesses along the edge of each cassette casing and automatically sets the deck to the proper bias and equalization settings. An 8-LED bar-graph display )one per channel) is accurate and responsive. Other features are; One-Touch Recording, Recording Mute, Timer-assisted record/playback, wired remote control and two-way Memory Stop.

Pioneer CT-6R cassette deck

A full-featured cassette deck

You'll find in the CT-6R all the essential technology of the finest Pioneer decks. Features like the Ribbon Sendust Head, 3-motor direct drive design, C.A.C. (Computer-Aided Convenience), ans so forth. It's priced, however, within the reach of any audiophile.

Just as in our finest decks, you'll find a Pioneer-exclusive head design - the Ribbon Sendust Head - for recording and playback in this model. This laminated head uses a dozen ultra-fine sendust "ribbons" to reduce eddy currents and therefore reduce core loss. This results in extended high-frequency response, all the way to the limits of audiobility. Transient response and treble clarity are improved for better still reproduction quality. During playback this same head is used for either direction of tape travel, assuring matched response regardless of direction. During recording the "Small-Window" Erase Head is also at work wiping old recordings completely clean.

Another design feature found in our more expensive models is the three-direct-drive-motor system. One motor drives the capstan and the other two drive the reels. These brushless Hall motors are largely responsible for the low wow and flutter of this deck - a mere 0,04% (WRMS). This transport design also improves head-to-tape contact for fewer dropouts and variations in recording or playback levels

Hiss and MOL-limited saturation distortion have become problems of the past. New Dolby-C noise reduction has reduced noise by 20 dB at 5 kHz, while improving high-frequency response by expanding the MOL (Maximum Output Level). Now, the usable dynamic range - up to 90 dB - is sufficiently wide to match even digital or direct-cut recordings.

The C.A.C. (Computer-Aided Convenience) features that the CT-6R offers include index Scan, Music Search and Blank Skip and Reverse. And the three-direct-drive-motor tape transport offers quick and direct change of modes and flying-start recording.

Program peaks are shown by a responsive 8-LED bar-graph display (one per channel) Other advanced deck features include the Auto Tape Selector, one-Touch Recording, Recording Mute, a wired remote control and more.

Sony TA-F5A amplifier

Integrated Stereo Amplifier

The Sony TA-F5A integrated amplifier is designed for listeners who appreciate excellent sound. And an unusual degree of operating convenience.

Preamplifier/Control Section

The F5A incorporates a newly-designed phono EQ amplifier for low-noise, wide-dynamic-range reproduction. The direct coupled amp, together with an FET/DC negative-feedback circuit, maintains high operating stability. In addition, special capacitors, made of polypropylene film, are employed in the NF-network to ensure ultra-low distortion with voltage increase. Overall results include RIAA equalization accuracy within ±0,2 dB.

An equivalent level of accuracy is provided by the F5A's sophisticated features. Which include a four-gang stepped-attenuator volume control - with 41 detent steps - for accurate level adjustment, with no tracking error between channels. Negative-feedback, stepped-attenuator bass and treble controls are provided for precise frequency contouring; with mid-point "defeat" positions that allow absolutely flat response. There's also a high filter plus a sub-sonic filter that cuts low-frequency components below 15 Hz.

Connections for tuner, turntable, auxiliary source and two tape decks allow truly versatile system functioning. And tape monitor/dubbing facilities let you listen to all program sources during the dubbing process.

Power Amplifier Section

The direct-coupled DC power amplifier section utilizes a new monolithic IC for its dual-FET input stage. This is followed by a Class B driver stage and single-ended push-pull final stage. In itself, this amplifier design yields wide-band response, low distortion, high phase linearity and excellent transient response. But performance is improved even further through the Sony PPS system.

Pulse Power Supply - PPS

The advanced new PPS system reduces voltage fluctuations to 7% or less, vs the 15% of conventional amplifiers. And this means minimal stereo channel interaction through the power-supply circuit. Instead of going directly through a transformer and then on to rectifiers, with PPS, the incoming AC 120 V, 60 Hz line current is first rectified. The rectified current then drives a DC-to-DC converter, which operates at 20 kHz, instead of he usually 60 Hz. The 20 kHz frequency means the PPS transformer can be small efficient, since the high frequency requires fewer transformer windings. This in turn, means less DC resistance within the windings. With less resistance, there's less voltage drop with increasing power demands. Which results in better power performance - especially with low-frequency transients. And since the PPS never handles 60 Hz line frequency, hum is virtually eliminated.

For accurate power monitoring, the F5A features two large meters, which indicate output levels in watts per channel - from 0,01 to 100 watts. Other advanced amplifier features include large, cast aluminum heat sinks for cool operation, plus comprehensive amplifier/speaker protection circuits.
