NEC CD-803 cd player

NEC CD-803 Compact Disc Digital Audio Player
The CD-803 is no ordinary CD player, or it is based on NEC's many years of experience in all major areas of electronics and communications engineering - digital, optical, semiconductor laser, electronics, communications and precision machinery. No other CD player manufacturer has the technological background of NEC, the reason why the CD-803 provides unusually good sound quality and reproduction accuracy. Serious audiophiles and audio critics are now discovering what we already know; the CD-803 is the best executed CD player on the market.

What is a Compact Disc Digital Audio System.
Compact Disc Digital Audio is a system whereby an original analog signal is converted into a digital signal - a series of 0's and 1's in the binary code. This information, stored in the form of microscopic pits on a flat disc, is retrived by an optical (laser) beam, and finally converted back into analog form by a digital-to-analog (D/A) converter. The piece of audio equipment that retrives digital information from a CD and converts it into an analog audio signal is a CD player. The CD system offers tremendous advantages over the conventional analog system. For instance, dynamic range and s/n ratio both exceed 90 dB, and channel separation is better than 70 dB across an audio band extending from 5 Hz to 20 kHz. No wonder audiophiles and serious music lovers throughout the world have been awestruck by this new source of ultimate fidelity music.

Ease of operation
The CD-803 enhances ease of operation every bit as much as it improves sound quality. Advanced computer control means that it takes only minutes to learn every operating feature. Simply insert a disc into the front-panel door and touch the Open/Close button. As the door quietly closes, the disc rotates for a few seconds to enter encoded program data into the memory, and then stops. Now, by just touching the feather-touch operating buttons, you are ready to enter the realm of digital sound.

Memory play of up to 99 selections.
Up to 99 selections (tracks) on a disc can be programmed for play in any order. Moreover, by pushing the Repeat button, you can replay programmed selections as many times as you want. The average time it takes to locate  a selection, or access track time, is only three seconds. For your convenience, when you've completed initial programming, you can confirm each programmed selection (its track number and order) on the display by just touching the Memo List button.

Digital-domain technology
A Compact Disc contains a sophisticated error correction signal. By extrapolation, it is possible to reconstruct the original digital pulses accurately in instances where some are unreadable. However, severe dropouts, caused by external noise or damage to the disc, may prove too much for the error correction system. This led NEC to develop a three-stage servo for the disc motor which accurately detects and corrects for dropouts. Faithful reproduction is assured.

Digital-analog interface technology
Digital signals are composites of both left and right channel information in alternating sequence. A switching circuit divides the composite signal  into its left channel and right channel components. For this purpose, NEC developed an electronic switch which allows high-speed switching at a rate 10 times faster than commonly used C-MOS devices or analog switches. This significantly lowers high-frequency distortion. With the NEC electronic switching system, the signal runs in parallel with the Circuit rather than in series (as is the case with other switches(, so signal integrity is maintained.

Analog-domain technology
Once digital signals are converted into analog by the D/A converter, the sampling frequency (44,1 kHz) and its harmonic components must be eliminated completely by a low-pass filter. Commonly used active and passive filters suffer phase-related distortion called group delay, which led NEC to develop the ND (Non-Delay) filter. It reduces group delay at 20 kHz to 1/25 the value of other filter designs and significantly reduces unwanted spurious-frequency response.

McLaren 602 preamplifier

McLaren 602 Control Preamplifier
The McLaren 02 component series represents a unique synthesis of art, science and technology - the realisation of a design philosophy dedicated simply to the accurate reproduction of music.
Form, function and performance specifications all express and testify to this basic ideal. But most important is the innate ability of the range to recreate a true musical experience.

The McLaren 602 is a high gain, high resolution "straight line" preamplifier, fully compatible with a wide range of signal sources from low output moving coil cartridges to high output CD players.
Phono gain can be switched for either moving or fixed coil cartridges. Provision is made for optimum cartridge loading. An input buffer precedes the two-stage passive/active RIAA equalisation where particular care and attention has been given to achieving both amplitude and phase accuracy, not only in absolute terms, but to ensure precise matching between channels.
Power supply design also makes a major contribution to performance. Individual stages of each channel have their own locally regulated supplies fed from a central regulated supply incorporating a heavy duty shielded toroidal transformer.
As a result the 602 possesses superlative dynamic and imaging qualities - clearly focused detail revealing the most subtle instrumental and vocal timbres, with a true perception of image depth and height.
The high undistorted output voltage capability of the line stage with an unusually low output impedance, ensures that the 602 will fully drive any power amplifier even via extreme lengths of shielded cable.
Construction is to the highest engineering standards. The case is entirely non-ferrous - faceplate and side blocks are cut and machined from proprietory extruded sections, top and bottom covers coated with an attractive and durable textured finish.
Front fixing screws, nameplate and all input and output sockets on the rear panel are 24-karat gold plated. Control knobs are turned from solid aluminium, satin anodised to harmonise with the front panel.
Internal construction features gain selected semiconductors and highest quality passive components.

Features:
Phono gain adjustable for MC or MM
User-selectable phono loading
Two-stage RIAA equalisation - passive high frequency followed by active low frequency equalisation
Output muting relay to avoid on/off switching transients.

Spectro Acoustics 101B preamplifier

Spectro Acoustics Model 101B
Preamplifier/Equalizer
The quality of a stereo component system lies in the audiophil's choice of equipment. The major influence affecting that quality is the interaction and influence of each component on other components and the culmination of those influences on the human ear. This is where the choice is made in selecting "quality" and whether to accept a particular sound as "right"
All things considered, the perfect listening environment is still the concert hall and reproduction of music must remain subjective. However, we want control over what we hear and have the facility to change what it is that reaches our ears. In musical reproduction this function is relegated to the concepts of tonal compensation, balance and volume. The equipment corollary is the modern preamplifier; a device which offers control over the amount of sound reaching our ears and which particular source we will listen to, (whether it be a tape recording, a phonograph record or a radio broadcast). In most cases, there is the ability to change the tonal content at specifically designated frequencies.
Spectro Acoustics, in attempting to obtain maximum performance value, offers the Model 101B preamplifier/equalizer for audiophiles who want the most in flexibility and performance at a reasonable price.

The Spectro Acoustic Model 101B  in order to optimize reliability and serviceability, is designed and constructed to utilize plug-together glass-epoxy circuit boards and 100% monolithic IC circuitry for consistent performance. All controls and connections are human engineered to give simple straight forward operation. The graphic panel of the 101B is a display of exactly what's going on inside of the unit. Control is at the user's finger tips to seek the level and range of sound that achieves personal satisfaction.
The equalizer circuit for the Model 101B is a totally new type based on Spectro Acoustics gyrator synthesis techniques similar to those used in the Model 210 Graphic Equalizer. The design is a hybrid coil/gyrator type which totally eliminates distortion and hum for equalizer circuitry. The filter parameters are optimized for maximum flexibility from a five band design and as an added benefit the highest and lowest frequency bands are "shelving" type to control the response well beyond are "shelving" type to control the response well beyond the extremes of audibility. The usefulness of the equalizer circuitry is further enhanced through its complete availability to line or tape outputs, or total bypass for equalization in/out comparisons.

In phono stage, the Model 101B utilizes an isolated feedback servo op-amp phono stage with ultra-accurate adherence to the RIAA curve. This circuit provides for accurate cartridge response, increased definition of high frequencies and greater dynamic range. Internally accessible cartridge loading components can be adjusted by any qualified and authorized technician to perfectly match the cartridge load for any cartridge.
