What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Technics RS-M236X deck

Many stereo cassette decks are equipped with a noise reduction system. But not many are equipped with three. The Technics RS-M236X features: dbx, Dolby C and Dolby B noise reduction circuitry, offering triple insurance of deck/tape compatibility.

dbx, Dolby C, and Dolby B
The RS-M236X's three noise reduction systems are arranged in a neat push-button format for maximum convenience, dbx is the most effective of the trhee, eliminating background tape hiss, and also giving the tape the ability to reproduce up to a 110 dB difference  in volume levels (the dynamic range of a live performance) dbx reduces noise by at least 30 dB, below audible levels, and it increases headroom by about 10 dB, so the tape can reproduce loud music signals without distorting them. The RS-M236X is also equipped with a dbx disc decoder, so you can experience the same live-performance realism from the growing number of dbx-encoded LPs as you do from dbx-encoded tapes.
Dolby B, the noise reduction system used in many cassette decks and prerecorded tapes, and Dolby C, an improved version of Dolby B, both reduce tape noise, especially in the high frequency range where tape hiss is most noticeable.

Microprocessor feather-Touch Controls with Cue and Review.
Microprocessor operation gives the feather-touch control panel an impressive array of conveniences. You can switch from fast forward or rewind directly to play, without having to touch the "stop" key. And the deck also includes cue&review functions, so you can locate specific parts of songs by monitoring the sound during rewind and fast forward. The controls are also color-coded for extra convenience.

Wide-Range 2-Color FL Meters
This advanced electronic metering system uses a flourescent display to show both instantaneous signal input level and the highest peak reached in each 2-second period. The meter's range extends from -40 dB to +18 dB to cover dbx 's wide dynamic range.

Automatic Tape Selector
Forgetting to set a deck's tape selector can cause distortion, noise, and unnatural tonal balance - in short, a ruined recording. But tape type selection is automatic in the RS-M236X, which detects the ID recesses on the back of the cassette and sets the correct bias and equalization for normal, CrO₂ and metal tapes. The automatic tape selector's setting is indicated by colored LEDs.

Slider Controls for Input Level and Balance
The RS-M236X's dual slider system provides optimum precision in setting recording levels. For most recording, the master input level slider suffices, adjusting both the left and right channels together. For such demanding situations as live recording, the balance slider adjusts left/right channel balance.

Other Features:
2-motor drive
Metal-compatible MX head
Automatic mic/line input selector
Timer record/playback capability
Oil-damped cassette well door, removable for easy maintenance.
