The front-loading Tone Controls-K5 is Sony's middleweight champion - with heavyweight features and performance that set it apart from other cassette decks in its class. Features and performance that give you maximum value. And the quality that only our specialized recording-equipment background can provide. Many year's experience in tape-deck manufacturing and magnetic tape production - applied to deliver maximum cassette-deck performance, convenience and dependability.
Design and Performance
The K5's tape transport system has been designed for excellence in every critical performance area, including Frequency Response, Signal-to-Noise Ratio and Wow and Flutter.
A DC servo-controlled motor, with integral FG (frequency generator) and electronic servo-circuit, is employed for capstan-drive. This advanced design assures the utmost speed accuracy, automatically compensating for any interference which would cause speed irregularities, and smooth, stable tape travel results. the audible result is reflected in a Wow and Flutter level only 0,05% (WRMS). In our special DC servo-controlled motor, a tiny frequency generator, mounted at the bottom of the motor shaft, produces an AC signal whose frequency is proportional to the motor's instantaneous speed. This signal is run through a limiter, or 'WAVE FORM SHAPER", then a "frequency-to-voltage converter" which produces a DC output proportional to the signal fed to it. This output is compared with a highly stable DC reference voltage in a "voltage comparator". And the "difference voltage" from the comparator stage is fed to a DC amplifier which then drives the motor at exactly the correct speed. Unlike conventional servo-controlled motors, the Sony FG servo system maintains constant speed under widely varying temperature conditions. And to assure low noise, the motor is triply shielded with vibration-proof rubber, aluminum and steel. In addition, the motor is free from interference generated by external noise.
