What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Fairchild SM-1 Cartridge

Fairchild progres is typified in the new SM-1 Rotating Magnet Compatible Stereo/Monophonic cartridge.

The efforts of Fairchild's engineering staff, skilled as no other group in professional transducers, is culminated in a sleek, functionally designed cartridge.

The Fairchild SM-1 will complement any home music system. It is sufficietly rugged to stand the abuse of the most ancient record changer, yet it will enhance the performance of the finest professional arms and turntables.

Its high outputpermits quiet operation of the most economical of kit amplifiers, while the wide response will test the finest stereo amplifier-preamplifier units on the market.

Comparision of the specifications will convince you that, for stereo cartridges, all you need say is Fairchild.

SPECIFICATIONS

type: Custom-ground rotating ball magnet,with easily replaceable stylus.

output: 11.5 millivolts at 5 cm / sec. and 1 kc, 16.2 millivolts at 7 cm / sec. and 1 kc

hum level: Hum is 65 dB below signal level when mounted on turntable. These figures are well below competitive units under identical conditions.

construction: Internal copper case for electrostatic screening, completely enclosed inmu-metal outer case which affords complete magnetic shielding.

tracking: 30 cm/sec. sinusoidally, at approximately 3 grams.

dimensions: Designet to fit all standard record changer and transcription arms with either ½" or ⁷/₁₆" mounting centers

recommended tracking pressure: 3-4 grams

impedance: 2000 ohms DC resistance and 0.5 h inductance. Nominal impedance at 1kc,3700ohms

optimum load: 47,000 ohms,39K to 100K acceptable

separation: Better than 25 dB at 1000 cycles, better than 20 dB over most of the audio range. Exceptional separation in the most critical 6 kc to 15 kc range.

response: Better that ±2 dB fro 20 cycles to 15,000 cycles.Nohigh end roll off - full fidlity.

damping: Individualvertical and lateral damping, preset at factory for optimum damping and tracking conditions.

compliance: Vertical 4 x 10 ⁻⁶ cm/dyne and lateral 6 x 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne for minimum record and stylus wear.

cable length: lead length to 20 feet permissable, assuming preamplifier terminated in47,000 ohms, and standard cable with capacity of approximately 23 mmf per foot.
