What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Linn Index loudspeakers

The Linn Index is a two way loudspeaker system, utilizing an eight inch bass driver and a one inch soft dome tweeter in an accoustic suspension enclosure. Even though it is a "budget" priced loudspeaker, the Index is intended for use by the serious hi-fi enthusiast. It offers what we believe is the best value-for-money available in an inexpensive speaker, in terms of parts quality, construction, and perormance.

Almost all lower priced loudspeaker cabinets are constructed of 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch particle board, often of a lower density than that used in larger loudspeakers. The Linn Index uses full 3/4 inch, high dnsity particle board, which results in a much more rigid enclosure. Likewise, speaker connectors are usually mounted on a pressboard insert, set into a cutout on the back of the cabinet, which greatly compromises cabinet rigidity. The index connectors are flush mounted directly into the cabinet, eliminating this problem. The connectors themselves are individually machined 4 mm banana sockets, custom manufactured by Linn Products, instead of the typical press-on connectors or binding posts. These connectors provide a vastly superior electrical connection. Along these lines, the speaker is wired internally with 20 amp, 50 strand cable, which is the same cable used in Linn's more expensive loudspeakers, including the DMS and PMS.

Each Index is individually tested on Linn product;s Hewlett Packard computerized test system.
