What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

SAE Mark XVII equalizer

Solid State Stereo Octave Equalizer

Control - for many years the need to tailor program material to meet individual tastes has been apparent. Highly sophisticated multi-control systems have been available to meet these needs in the recording studio, on the rock stage and at the concert hall (places where you would find the 2700B). However, the need to control sound in the home has never fully been realized, due to limitations in present consumer designs. There were numerous requests for a modestly priced, quality equalizer to improve old or worn records, and to compensate for speaker performance and room conditions without degradation of sound. The Mark XVII is the answer to these requests, incorporating many of the same unique performance and convenience features as our professional half-octave equalizer,, the 2700B. For example, we use the same long throw oil-damped graphic potentiometers as the 2700B. We feel this offers better accuracy for spectral control and smoother operation. We also incorporate our famous L-C-R network which result in the best balance of performance, low noise, and reliability. The toroid inductors are precision wound at our factory and then hand picked for each model to offer the ultimate in performance.

Finally, the latest in output design is incorporated to ensure that the Mark XVII would affect the sound in no other way than that for which it was intended - the control of frequency response. The Mark XVII can deliver over 11V into a 10 k Ω  or greater load, assuring undistorted performance with any program material. SAE's unequalled talents show through in measurements too-both T.H.D. and Intermodulation Distortion are less than 0,03% and the noise is 90 dB below rated output. We feel that such a level of performance in an equalizer of this size and flexibilty is a true innovation in the audio industry.

 

Features

Octave Control

Twenty precision L-C-R band-pass filters offer octave control for each channel. Precision-wound toroid inductors, low-loss capacitors, and precision-tracking potentiometers result in low noise, low phase shift, and low distortion.

Dual Range

The individual frequency controls operate over a range of +8 dB for program equalization or +16 dB for more drastic modification to room or speaker response. These two ranges are front panel selectable.

Individual EQ Defeat

Front panel selection is available for the individual defeat of the equalization on either channel. This offers A-B comparison between speakers and between equalized and non-equalized program material. You may also simply defeat the equalizer for some program sources.

Output Drive

The high output voltage circuitry delivers over 11 Volts RMS into a 10 k Ω  or greater load. This allows the Mark XVII to be terminated into any unique load configuration without an incrase in distortion or current limiting.

Stereo Half Octave Equalizer

The SEA Mark XXVIIB is a highly sophisticated frequency modification system that compensates for room acoustic, balances speaker response, selectively filters noise, equalizes sound for recording, induces stereo on mono program sources and aids in solving most reproduction problems.

Twenty low-noise, low-distortion band pass filters per channel  are provided where each filters center frequency is separated by one-half octave. The filter range effectiveness is selectable at either ±8 dB max or ±16 dB max. Grain or attenuation on the individual filters are independently controlled by calibrated professional slide potentiometers.

Further flexibility is offered in normalizing room acoustics with the inclusion of a "pink Noise" generator. This generator offers the flexibility of calibrating your system for minimum frequency distortion, as well as checking for proper speaker phasing and energy balance. Utilizing our professionally proven precision wound toroid inductors in the classic L-C-R configuration, the mark XXVIIB provides uncompromising performance with low noise (greater than -100 dB) and low harmonic and Intermodulation Distortion Distortion (0,02 T.H.D. and 0,02 Intermodulation Distortion). The full complementary output circuit offers adequate drive for any equipment the Mark XXVIIB will interface with in home or professional applications.

Soundcraftsmen AE2420-R analyzer/equalizer


Soundcraftsmen's  AE2420-R  Analyzer/Equalizer is claimed to be a "revolutionary breakthrough" in enabling accurate analusis of a room's "imperfections", as ell as compensating for system imperfections. A new concept is used to apply differential/comparator circuitry  to equalization analysis. By sampling the complex waveshapes of a pink noise input signal on the one hand, and the speaker output signal on the other hand, the circuitry of the device converts the complex wave shapes to DC levels; these are then compared through the differential/comparator circuit to provide readout of the exact differential between these two complex waves shapes with an accuracy of 1/1oth dB. Even if the pink noise input amplitude is variable across the spectrum, there is no effect on the analyzer's dB readings because the analyzer is actually looking at both the selected frequency spectrum signals simultaneously, without regard to amplitude. Any good quality low- or high-impedance microphone may be used, regardless of the mike's response curve. The calibrated curve supplied by the microphone manufacturer can be programmed into the obtained flat response curve through use of the "computer charts" the maker of this device provides.

JVC SEA-80 equalizer

A new 10-band equalizer from JVC Corp can "tune your room" for audio reproduction of the highest quality. The equalizer utilizes a pink noise generator that simulates the response of the human ear; energy distribution is constant as the signal doubles between 100 Hz and 200 Hz ; for example. The SEA-80 is claimed to actually analyze a room's acoustic so that you can make exact compensations on each of the ten channels. A Fluorescent Spectrum Analyzer Display divides input into ten bands (corresponding to the center frequencies of the equalization controls) and displays the dB level of each on ten, bright fluorescent bars. An eleventh bar charts over-all volume. This visual graph of a room's acoustics ensures real equalization, says JVC. Each display bar is designed to rise rapidly and fall slowly to enhance the visual representation of what your ears actually hear. The display covers the frequency range from 32 Hz to 16,000 Hz over the range from "0" to 26 dB. The SEA-80's mode switch allows a graphic reading of either the left- or right channel signals alone, as well as both together. A memory feature allows holding an input indication for closer inspection. The unit is said to aid in control of high frequency signals when recording on cassette tapes.

Level Control with One Octave Cutoff, independent left and Right channels
The level control is cut off by one octave in 10 elements of 32 Hz, 64 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz, and the left channel and right channel can be operated independently. The variable range of each element is ±10 dB

IC operation Amplifier
Unlike any other graphic equalizer, SG-9500 uses an Integrated Circuit instead of ordinary cils and capacitors. The IC contains 20 transistors and 2 diodes (x10 elements) and each IC operates as an active bandpass filter by negative feedback technology. This helps minimize distortion and contributes to expansion of dynamic range.

Multiple Reproduction and recording Techniques
By  combining the Tape Monitor Switch and Equalizer Switch , six different recording and reproducing methods can be accomplished without connecting or disconnecting the cords of the SG-9500. with the Equalizer SW switched off, the Equalizer  circuit is baypassed. Refeence to the wiring diagram reproduced on the unit's rear panel, adds to the convenient reproduction and recording possibilities of the SG-9500.

Pure FET-Equipped Electronic type Muting
A pure electronic type control muting circuit is employed in the SG-9500 with an FET in the output stage in series. This eliminates pop noises when power is switched on and off.

 A perfectionist's instrument, featuring unparalleled flexibility of inputs, outputs, mixing, and professional linear actuated controls, the Graphic Controller offers the flatest frequency response, lowest distortion, lowest noise level and greatest operating convenience of any preamplifier. Additional controls, tape monitor switch and convenience inputs and outputs are located behind special hinged front panel.
 Special Features:
Professional linear-actuated controls allow precise adjustment and give instant visual recognition of exact settings. Illuminated push-buttons permit instantaneous switching from any function to any other function. Seledom-used controls are concealed behind a hinged lower panel, out of sight when not needed, yet directly accessible from the front.

Half Octave Control
Professional slide potentiometers provide for individual adjustment of 20 frequencies per channel on a half octave basis. In combination with a switchable ±8 dB or ±16 dB gain range, these half octave controls allow for extreme levels of flexibility-up to 32 dB of adjustment per frequency. This control design offers peaked response when used in extreme position, thus overcoming individual resonance problems without compromising other frequency regions. This high level of frequency control allows for proper equalization of program material as well as correction of poor room acoustic and speaker deficiencies, especially at crossover points.
 Pink Noise Generator
A built-in pink noise generator assures an accurate reference for proper equalization of wide band speaker response, speaker phasing, channel power balancing and frequency equalization.

The SAE 2700B professional Equalizer output amplifiers incorporate a full complementary output stage, overcoming limitations of the more commonly used single ended output amplifiers. The 2700B also delivers 11 volts RMS into 600 ohms load assuring adeguate drive voltage under any condition.
